Rev. Paul Arvin

    Rev. Paul Arvin, 81, Sugar Hollow Road in Irvine, Kentucky, husband of Anna Lois Smith Arvin, passed away Saturday, April 5, 2014 at Marcum & Wallace Hospital.
    He was born October 3, 1932, a son of the late Nathaniel T. and Bertha Mae Richardson Arvin. He was a lifelong resident of Estill County and had been the pastor at South Irvine Pentecostal Church of God for over 52 years.
    Mr. Arvin was preceded in death by his daughter, Charlene Arvin; his granddaughter, Alisha Arvin; and several brothers and sisters.
    Survivors include his sons: Gary W. Arvin (Becky) and Paul “Bird” Arvin (Monica); his daughters: Phyllis Rawlins (late husband Eck), Lois Harrison (Randall), Wanda Elliott (Steve), Elaine Duncan, and Brenda Aldridge (Bill); his brother, Beverly Arvin; his sister, Alice Lynch; 13 grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
    Services were held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 9th at the South Irvine Pentecostal Church of God with Bros. Todd Hignite, Jack Carpenter, Jerry Rose, Junior Mays, Beverly Arvin and Kenneth Bishop officiating. Burial followed in the South Irvine Cemetery. Friends called anytime after 6:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 8th at the church.
    Pallbearers were Brandon Aldridge, Chad Aldridge, Caleb Aldridge, Caden Arvin, Steve Elliott, Colby Arvin, Hayden Rawlins, Eddie Crawley, and Chris Bowling.

Virginia Woods Fike, age 75

    Virginia Woods Fike, age 75, of Georgetown, Kentucky, passed away Wednesday, April 2, 2014, at the Georgetown Hospital after a long illness.
    She was born September 6, 1938, in Estill County, the daughter of the late Willis and Pearlie Bea Henderson Woods. She was a retired accountant and had lived in Georgetown for the last 15 years. She was a member of the American Legion’s Ladies Auxiliary.
    Mrs. Fike is survived by her husband, Beverly Odell Fike; one daughter, Jennifer Maria Sanders (Scott), Louisville; one son, Jeffrey Michael Fike (Carin), Cincinnati; two sisters: Loretta Reynolds, Radcliff; and Mattie Cook, Georgetown; one brother, Billy Ray Woods, Irvine; and one grandchild, Kaitlyn Virginia Sanders.
    Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 a.m., Monday, April 7th at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in the Woods Cemetery. Friends called from 6-9 p.m., Sunday, April 6th at the funeral home.
    In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Robert E. Glasson Jr.

    Robert E. Glasson Jr., age 64, of Irvine, Kentucky, formerly of North Vernon, Indiana; died Wednesday, April 2, 2014, at Marcum & Wallace Hospital in Irvine.
    Born January 7, 1950 in Columbus, Robert was the son of Robert E. and JoAnn Southern Glasson. Early in his career Robert had worked at Cummins Inc. for ten years. He then became an owner/operator of his own trucking business which he did for over thirty years. He was a member of Westport Baptist Church. He enjoyed going to auctions, working on old trucks, visiting with friends, and his little dog, Heidi.
    He is survived by his mother, JoAnn Glasson of North Vernon; two sons: Robert E. Glasson III and Tracy J. Glasson (Connie), both of Irvine; three brothers: Kevin Glasson of Freedom, Michael (Heather) Glasson of Clarksville, Tennessee; and Bruce (Crystal) Glasson of North Vernon; two sisters: Linda Beck of Ft. Myers, Florida; and Janice (Russ) Parks of Greensburg; grandchildren, Katie Skelton; Tyler, Robert, and Dakota Glasson, and three great grandchildren.
    He was preceded in death by his father; and two brothers: Garold A. and Timothy B. Glasson.
    A funeral service was conducted at 11:00 a.m., Monday, April 7th at Sawyer – Pickett Funeral & Cremation Service with Rev. Bob Weeks officiating. Interment was at Reddington Cemetery. Visitation was from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m., Sunday, April 6th at the funeral home.
    Pallbearers were Todd Collins, Brian Glasson, Michael C. Glasson, Bruce Glasson Jr., Cory Parks, and Adam Parks.

Skyler Shelton

    Skyler Shelton, age 17 of Clarksville, Indiana; and formerly of Irvine, Kentucky; lost his battle with his disease on Wednesday, April 2, 2014. He was a fighter until the end and was supported by his loving family and friends who were with him until Jesus walked him home. Diagnosed at age 3 1/2 with Idiopathic Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis and later with Renal disease which was Mesangial Proliferative Glomerulosclerosis, Skyler beat the odds and lived a life without regrets.
    He was born on August 17, 1996 in Richmond to Stephen Shelton and Quenna (Bowman) Gentry. He lived in Irvine, Kentucky, attending West Irvine and Estill Springs Elementary Schools and Estill County Middle School. In 2009, he moved with his mom to Clarksville, Indiana. Skyler had many loves in his life, but the greatest was racing. He raced the FWD #20 Orange and Blue car at the Sportsdrome Speedway in Jeffersonville and had won three races there. There he had many fans and friends who followed his racing as well as competed against him. He raced with a tough competitiveness, just as Dale Earnhardt, his NASCAR driver. Skyler also was a huge U.K. fan and rooted them all of the way to the final four. Now he can watch them win the National Championship from the best seat in the house. He also was a loyal supporter of the Cincinnati Bengals.
    Skyler will be remembered for his selfless love for others and his infectious love of life. He was someone who didn’t allow the pains and setbacks of illness to slow him down. He held a positive attitude throughout and left our presence to a new life free of disease. He lived by his motto, “Sky’s the Limit”.
    His survivors include his mom Quenna; his dad Stephen; Grandparents, Velma Jean Morris and Fred Hafley; Uncles, Billy (Jammie) Bowman, Jr, John Bowman and Theodore (Mary) Shelton; Aunts, Delia (Jeff) Henry, Lara Hafley and Sheryl Lurding; Sisters, Christy (Owen) Alvey, Evangeline Faith Banks, Elizabeth Banks (John) Dixon, Cheyenne Gentry, Destiny Gentry, Hope Gentry, Bridgette Gentry and Kaidence Heavyn Lee; Brother Landon Pierce Gentry; Nieces Breanna Alvey, Raylen Palmer Neal and his namesake, Kyra Danielle Sky Dixon; Nephews, Ryan Walter Cowguill and Benson Keith Kelly; Skyler was also survived by several other aunts, uncles, cousins and an extended Sportsdrome racing family. A special shout out with heartfelt gratitude and love to the following that stayed in the home and provided for all needs necessary: Lisa Lanham & Family, Paul Taylor, Trudy Orberson, Pat & Christy Polston, Lisa Cranmer-Seay, Aaron Seay, Ryan Seay, Chris Broy, Anthony Turner, Stephanie & Chris McCoy, Deborah Gentry, Sabrina Mattingly, Danielle Thacker, Sean Madden, Dawn & Briar Quiggins and Joann Leet as well as many other extended family & friends.
    Visitation was held on Monday, April 7th, 2-8 p.m., and on Tuesday, April 8th, 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Southeast Christian Church in Jeffersonville, Indiana. The service was held at 1:00 p.m on Tuesday at Southeast Christian and following the service, Skyler took one last lap around the Sportsdrome Speedway. Skyler then made his way back home to Irvine, Kentucky for a visitation at the Irvine 1st Church of God on Wednesday, April 9th, from 2:00 p.m until 8:00 p.m. A service will be held there at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, April 10th at the church with burial to follow at the Puckett Cemetery in Irvine.

Helen Delores Million Arvin, 72

    Helen Delores Million Arvin, age 72, of Berea, Kentucky, passed away Monday, March 31, at the St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington after a long illness.
    She was born August 27, 1941, in Woodford County, the daughter of the late William Gardner and Dora Lee West Million. She was a retired assembly line worker with the Plexus factory and had lived in Berea for the last 25 years. She was a member of the New Bethel Baptist Church.
    Mrs. Arvin was preceded in death by her husband, George Bain Arvin.
    She is survived by three daughters: Cindy Lou King, Berea; Cathy Knox, Stanton; and Cheryl Arvin, Berea; four sons: Terry Layne Arvin, Berea; George Bain Arvin II, Winchester; William Nathaniel Arvin, Stanton; and Ernest Lee Arvin, California; one brother, Ernest Million, Danville; 16 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
    She was preceded in death by one sister, Nellie Wimmer; and one brother, Billy Million.
    Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 a.m., Friday, April 4th at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Billy Stamper with burial following in the Hunt Cemetery. Friends called from 6-9 p.m., Thursday, April 3rd at the funeral home.

    Jennis Travis “JT” Harris, age 81, of Mount Vernon, Kentucky, passed away Monday, March 31, 2014, at his home, following a long illness.
    He was born January 7, 1933, in Greenville, North Carolina, the son of the late James Elie and Charlotte Mongino Harris. He made his home in Mt. Vernon for the past 14 1/2 years. He was a retired truck driver with FedEx and was a member of the Mt. Vernon Church of God. He served in the United States Army for two years.
    Mr. Harris is survived by his wife, Margie Faye Donahue Harris; two daughters: Pattie Howard and Betty Haswell, both of North Carolina; one son, Travis Harris, North Carolina; one stepdaughter, Carolyn McKnight, Paint Lick; one stepson, Charles Franklin Walton, Mt. Vernon; one sister, Margaret Wilkes, North Carolina; and 11 grandchildren.
    He was preceded in death by the mother of his children, Betty Jean Wray Harris; seven brothers and four sisters.
    Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 p.m., Friday, April 4th at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Bobby Owens and Bro. Bobby Hale with burial following in the Sunset Memorial Gardens. Friends called from 6-9 p.m., Thursday, April 3rd at the funeral home.

    Gary Davis Freeman, age 41, of Lock 11 Road in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Sunday, March 30, 2014.
    He was born June 27, 1972, in Madison County, the son of Gary Lynn Freeman and Anna Sue Burns Webb. He was a self-employed construction worker and had lived in Estill County all of his life. He attended the Bethel Christian Church.
    Survivors, in addition to his parents, are his grandmother, Edna Burns, Estill County; two daughters: Alesia Freeman and Sarah Freeman, both of Estill County; one sister, Deja Webb, New Castle, Kentucky; and one brother, James Reed, Estill County.
    He was preceded in death by one brother, Donald Lynn Freeman.
    Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, April 3rd at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in the Rose Freeman Cemetery. Friends called from 6-9 p.m., Wednesday, April 2nd at the funeral home.

    Nannie Eugene Combs Terry, age 87, of Berea, Kentucky, died Wednesday, March 26, 2014 at The Terrace Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
    She was a Ravenna, Kentucky native, born October 22, 1926, daughter of the late Fitch and Lou Ellen Haddix Combs, and a homemaker.
    Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, David and Freda Woosley; two grandchildren, David and Danny; two great grandchildren, Ko and Noa; one sister, Dorothy Jacobs; and one sister-in-law, Joyce Barnes Combs; as well as nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Noah Terry; and two brothers, John Combs and James Combs.
    No public service was scheduled. Burial was in Oakdale Cemetery.

    Phoebe Gayle Stewart, age 57, died Wednesday, March 26, 2014, at her residence.
    Born December 14, 1956, in Lexington, Kentucky, she was the daughter of Dorothy Cox King of Lexington and the late Roy King. Ms. Stewart was a self-employed caregiver.
    In addition to her mother, survivors include a son, Jeremy (Erica) Stewart, Irvine; a daughter, Melissa (Larry) Wilson, Georgetown; six grandchildren: Caden and Taylor Stewart; and Hailey, Johnathan, Kennedy, and Kendall Wilson; and one brother, John King.
    Funeral services were held at 12:30 p.m., Saturday, March 29th at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, Harrodsburg Road in Lexington, by Bro. Bill Bales. Burial followed in Blue Grass Memorial Gardens. Visitation was 6-9 p.m., Friday, March 28th at the funeral home.

    Ulyssus Coffey, age 76, of the Irvine, Kentucky, Health and Rehabilitation Center, passed away Saturday, March 29, 2014, at the Compassionate Care Center in Richmond, after a long illness.
    He was born December 30, 1937 in Jackson County, Kentucky, the son of the late Alger and Carrie Cain Coffey. He was a farmer and had lived in Estill County the last few years.
    Mr. Coffee is survived by one brother, Delmer Coffey, Florida; and several nieces and nephews
    He was preceded in death by one sister, Lois Brookman; and two brothers: John Coffey and James Coffey.

    Ina Osborne Metcalf, age 69, of Dug Hill Road in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Friday, March 28, 2014, at the Marcum and Wallace Memorial Hospital after a long illness.
    She was born April 23, 1944, in Estill County, the daughter of the late Robert and Modena Johnson Osborne. She retired from Carhartt as a machine operator after 36 years. She attended the House of Prayer and had lived in Estill County all of her life.
    Mrs. Metcalf was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Metcalf.
    She is survived by four daughters: Kathy Henson (Jerry), Fairfield, Ohio; Linda Hunt, Pat Bicknell (Fairley), both of Richmond; and Faye Roberts (Bill), Irvine; one son, Billy Wayne Metcalf, Irvine; four sisters: Lillie Sturgis (Edd), Richmond, Indiana; Allie Fair, Martha Flynn (Ernest), both of Irvine; and Jo Ann Patrick (Willard), Lexington; one brother, Wade Osborne, Irvine; 11 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren; and two daughters-in-law: Kathy Metcalf and Reva Metcalf.
    Mrs. Metcalf was preceded in death by two sons: Gary and Don Metcalf; a son-in-law and a granddaughter: Mike Hunt and Ashlee Hunt; 12 sisters; four brothers; a brother-in-law, Tracy Noland; and a sister-in-law, Linda Osborne.

    Glenn Russell “Charlie” Baker, age 60, husband of Cheryl Lynn Watson Baker, of Irvine, Kentucky; passed away on Wednesday, March 26, 2014 at the Hospice Compassionate Care Center in Richmond.
    He was born on December 31, 1953 in Fayette County to Anna Margaret Brown Baker and the late Earl Russell Baker. “Charlie” was a handyman and a general laborer and he attended the Cobhill Church of Christ.
    In addition to his wife, Cheryl L. Watson Baker, and his mother, Anna Margaret Brown Baker, he is survived by one son, Tony Abel of Richmond; one stepson, Chris Coffey (Timberlee) of Irvine; two step daughters: Christina Coffey of Irvine, and Casey Coffey of Lee County; two brothers: Earl Baker (Rhonda) of Berea, and David Baker (Pat) of Lexington; two sisters: Hazel Long (James) of Irvine, and Lorene Rader of Richmond; and ten grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and great nieces and great nephews and cousins.
    Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 29th at the Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home, 1110 Barnes Mill Road, Richmond, with Chris Coffey and Donald Jones officiating.     Mary Lucille Hall Benton, age 84, of Lilly Avenue in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Tuesday, March 25, 2014, at the Baptist Health Hospital in Lexington after a short illness.
    She was born March 29, 1929, in Breathitt County, a daughter of the late Roy and Lucy Thorpe Hall. She was retired from the meat department at Food World and had lived in Estill County all of her life. She was a member of the First Christian Church and the church’s Christian Women’s Fellowship.
    Mrs. Benton was preceded in death by her husband, Milford Benton.
    She is survived by two daughters: Sue Curtis, Richmond; and Barsha Honchell (Larry), Estill County; two sons: James S. Benton and fiancé Julie, Shelbyville; and Mark Benton (Kellie), Richmond; one brother, Vincent Hall (Connie), Franklin, Ohio; one brother-in-law, Tuffy Benton, Estill County; ten grandchildren: Andrea Williams, Jennifer Neal, Ricky Joe Benton, Stephanie Benton, Tyler Benton, Adam Benton, Steve Honchell, Jordyn Honchell, Kayla Benton and Rachael Benton; and 11 great grandchildren.
    Mrs. Benton was preceded in death by one sister, Vivian Hall; two brothers: Wallace Hall and Roy Hall Jr.; and one grandchild, Ashley Elizabeth Honchell.

    Della Akeman Harrison, age 84, widow of Johnny Harrison, passed away Monday, March 24, 2014, in Edgewood, Kentucky.
    She was a native of Hazard, Kentucky, born February 11, 1930, a daughter of the late Sam and Callie Deaton Akeman. She was a homemaker, a member of the Pentecostal faith, and loved sewing, quilting, and fishing.
    Survivors include her sons: Gary, Larry, Ricky (Brate) and Dwayne (Shondra) Harrison; her daughters: Faith Ball (Gary), and Susan Harrison; her brothers: John and Luther Akeman; her sisters: Doris Jean Sebastian and Edith Akeman; grandchildren: Lynn Harrison, Denise Harrison, Johnny Harrison, Tosha Hughes, Gary Harrison, Marsha Harrison, Saundra Campbell, Lonnie Campbell Jr., Felicia Harrison, Sidney Harrison, Sierra Harrison, Vanessa Harrison, and Zackary Harrison; and 26 great grandchildren.

    Mildred P. Richardson, age 84, Corydon, Indiana; died Wednesday, February 26, 2014, at Clark Memorial Hospital in Jeffersonville, Indiana.
    Born October 5, 1929, in Irvine, Kentucky, she was the daughter of the late Leonard and Nannie Metcalf Perry. She was retired from M. Fine and Sons Shirt Factory in New Albany, Indiana; and was a member of Corydon Baptist Church.
    Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Labon Richardson; a son, Mike Roberts; a grandson, Brent Richardson; three brothers: Pryse, Finley and Arthur Perry; and two sisters: Lucy Brinegar and Jewell Stanley.
    Survivors include three sons, Labon Richardson Jr. of Louisville, and Marcus Sr. and Casey Richardson, both of Palmyra, Indiana; a daughter, Jill Brown of Jeffersonville; eight grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren.
    Visitation was held Friday, February 28th, from 3 to 8 p.m., and Saturday, March 1, after 9 a.m., at Beanblossom-Cesar Funeral Home in Corydon. Her funeral was held Saturday, March 1st at 1 p.m. at the funeral home with burial in Jordan Cemetery near Corydon. Officiant was Pastor Tommy Hullette.
    Pallbearers were Kenny and Jon Carpenter, Dustin, Scot and Marcus Richardson Jr., and Michael Roberts.
