KSP makes arrest in Lee County murder

Melvin G. Slone, 55, is charged
    The Kentucky State Police make an arrest in the case that took the life of Martha Belle Hollar on April 11, 2014 in her Lee County residence. Preliminary investigation has indicated that Hollar was fatally shot prior to her residence catching on fire.
    Melvin G. Slone, 55 years old of Beattyville, was arrested today at 7:03 pm EDT, following the investigation. Slone has been charged with Murder and is lodged at the Three Fork’s Regional Jail. Murder in the State of Kentucky is a capital offense, punishable by 20 years or more in prison if convicted.
    The ongoing investigation is being conducted by KSP Detective Jesse Armstrong.

Blood drive scheduled in Irvine

    Area residents are invited to be life-savers an upcoming Kentucky Blood Center blood drive scheduled in Irvine at West Irvine Elementary School, 155 River View Road, on Thursday, April 24th, 2-7 p.m. in the school's gym.

    Blood donors must have a photo I.D., be 17-years-old (16 with parental consent), weigh at least 110 pounds, be in general good health and meet additional requirements. Sixteen-year-old donors must have a signed parental permission slip, which can be found at kybloodcenter.org.

    KBC, the largest FDA regulated blood bank in Kentucky, is a non-profit organization dedicated to ensuring a safe, adequate blood supply for patients at nearly 70 Kentucky hospitals and clinics in more than 60 counties. KBC relies on volunteers to donate 400 pints of blood per day to meet area patients’ needs. Over the last year KBC distributed nearly 130,000 blood components.

KY 52 in Estill County to be closed Friday, May 2

    In order to replace a drainage pipe, the Kentucky Department of Highways plans to close KY 52 in Estill County on Friday, May 2. The road will be closed at milepoint 9.8, which is near Estill Wood Products just outside Ravenna. The project will begin around 8:30 a.m. and will continue until approximately 3 p.m. During this time, the road will be closed to all through traffic.
    No marked detour will be posted, but drivers can use KY 1571 as an alternate route. Motorists should plan their trips accordingly.
    In case of inclement weather, the closure will be postponed until another suitable day.

Barbara Lee Rogers Montgomery, 61

    Barbara Lee Rogers Montgomery, age 61, of Rogers Lane in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Monday, April 28, 2014, at her home.
    She was born October 11, 1952 in Estill County and was the daughter of Delilah Johnson Rogers and the late George Kenneth Rogers. She was a waitress and had lived in Estill County most of her life. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Montgomery.
    Survivors in addition to her mother include three sons: Greg Stamper (Shiela), Irvine; Kenneth Stamper (Amanda), Waco; and Scott Stamper (Angela), Irvine; three sisters: Debbie Johnson, Dorothy Rogers, both of Madison County; and Faye Rogers, Massachusetts; five brothers: Kenny Rogers, Estill County; Omer Rogers, Lee County; and Jimmy Rogers, Estill County; Donnie Rogers, Madison County; and Joey Rogers, Menifee County; and eight grandchildren: Gregory, Morgan, Justin, Austin, Kara, Shayla, Jacob and Savannah.
    Mrs. Montgomery was preceded in death by one sister, Edna “Cookie” Rogers; and one brother, Charles Douglas Rogers.     Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., today, Wednesday, April 30th at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Elwood Patrick. Burial will be at the Cobb Hill Cemetery. Friends called between 7 and 9 p.m., Tuesday, April 29th at the funeral home.

Elmer Grant Richardson, 82

    Elmer Grant Richardson, age 82, of G. Richardson Road in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Sunday, April 27, 2014, in his sleep.
    He was born March 13, 1932 in Estill County and was the son of the late Grant and Gladys Marcum Richardson. He was a retired logger and attended the Holiness Church. He had lived in Estill County all of his life.
    Mr. Richardson is survived by two daughters: Sharon Taylor (Terry) and Tonya Floyd (Gayle), both of Estill County; three grandchildren: Travenna Flynn (Stewart), Dewayne Rose (Heather) and Lakrisha Floyd; and three great grandchildren: Lucas Flynn, Mahailee Rose and Allyson Combs.
    He was preceded in death by his brother, Harry Earl Richardson.
    Funeral services will be conducted at 5:00 p.m., Thursday, May 1st at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Billy Stamper. Burial will be at the Congleton Cemetery. Friends may call after 2 p.m.,Thursday, at the funeral Home.

Helen Effie Hall, 87

    Helen Effie Hall, age 87, of New Fox Road in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Thursday, April 24, 2014, at the Compassionate Care Center in Richmond, after a short illness.
    She was born January 7, 1927, in Oxford, Ohio, the daughter of the late Zack and Ruby Richardson Warner. She was a retired employee of the Bluegrass Army Depot and a member of the Bethel Christian Church. She had lived in Estill County most of her life.
    Mrs. Hall was preceded in death by her husband, Preston Freeman.
    She is survived by two daughters: Carol Price (Ray) and Cathy Shearer (Ralph), both of Richmond; one son, Larry Freeman (Sherry) Irvine; one brother, Robert Warner, Irvine; six grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
    She was preceded in death by two brothers, Harold and Charles Warner; and her husbands, Clayton Jones and Morris Hall.
    Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 a.m., Monday, April 28th by Bro. Bill Curtis at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was at the Rose-Freeman Cemetery. Friends called between 6 and 9 p.m., Sunday, April 27th at the funeral home.

Earnest Edward "Tom" Ratliff, 83

    Earnest Edward "Tom" Ratliff, age 83, of Beumont, California; passed away Thursday, April 24, 2014.
    He was born August 18, 1930 in Powell County, Kentucky, the son of Johnny and Sudie Wasson Ratliff.
    "Tom" is survived by his wife, Margie, and two siblings: Ruby Ratliff and John Ratliff.
    He was preceded in death by three sisters: Alwena Marcum, Dorothy Foster, and Betty Coine; a stepsister, Earnestine Kirk; and two brothers: Dewey Ratliff and Kenneth Ratliff.
    Arrangements were under the direction of Weaver Mortuary, Beaumont, California.

Betty Joyce Patrick Powell, age 64

    Betty Joyce Patrick Powell, age 64, of Cressy Road in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Tuesday, April 22, 2014, at the Marcum & Wallace Memorial Hospital.
    She was born January 2, 1950 in Estill County and was the daughter of the late Tracy and Irene McIntosh Patrick. She was a homemaker, a former Carhartt, Inc. employee and a caregiver. She was a member of the Ivory Hill Baptist Church and the Garden Thyme Herb Club. She had lived in Estill County all of her life.
    Mrs. Powell is survived by four daughters: Debbie Wright (Darrell), Sanders; Jackie Woosley (Michael), Mt. Sterling; Vicki Horn (Jeff), Ravenna; and Cathy Dawes (Bryan), Irvine; one son, Dino Powell, Irvine; two sisters, Delores Patrick Rowland and Nancy Townsend (Ralph), both of Irvine; two brothers: Tracy Randall Patrick (Luellis), and Johnnie Patrick, both of Irvine; 11 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
    She was preceded in death by one brother, Charles Allen Patrick.
    Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 a.m., Friday, April 25th at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Bob Mills and Bro. Buford Powell. Burial was at the Crowe Cemetery. Friends called between 6 and 9 p.m., Thursday, April 24th at the funeral home.

Arthur Cole White, age 72

    Arthur Cole White, age 72, of 3rd Street in Ravenna, Kentucky, passed away Sunday, April 20, 2014, at his home following a long illness.
    He was born November 25, 1941 in Clark County and was the son of the late James and Ann Abner White. He was a former engineer with Sylvania and had lived in Estill County most of his life. He was a veteran with the United States Air Force and a member of the American Legion.
    Mr. White is survived by his wife, Billie Margaret Christy White; one daughter, Debra Cole (Michael), Estill County; two sons: William White (Robin), Estill County; and Michael White (Sherri), San Antonio, Texas; one sister, Mary Ann Cline, Winchester; a sister-in-law, Joyce White, Winchester; six grandchildren: Brandon Cole & wife, London, Micaela Cole, Andrew White, Tyler White, Mahala Caldwell and Joseph Smith; and four great grandchildren: Hollie Cole, Lillian Cole, Karlee Smith and Addison Smith.
    He was preceded in death by two brothers, Danny and Jimmy White.
    Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 23rd at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Scott Rogers. Burial will be at the Oakdale Cemetery. Friends called between 6 and 9 p.m., Tuesday, April 22nd at the funeral home.

Clemon Dee Cole, 78

    Clemon Dee Cole, age 78, of Stanton, Kentucky, died Thursday, April 10, 2014 in Orlando, Rockcastle County, Kentucky.
    He was born in Irvine, Kentucky, on February 3, 1936, the son of the late Virgil and Bessie L. Powell Cole. He was a self-employed auto mechanic.
    Mr. Cole is survived by a son, Clemon David Cole (Lucy) of Orlando; three daughters: Letha Tipton (Oliver) of Winchester, Bessie Tipton (Robert) and Heather Cole, both of Irvine; two brothers: Estill Lee Cole and Jerry Cole, both of Clay City; and six sisters: Lillie Cole, Bobbie Crowe, Clarene Donahue, Violet Spangler, all of Winchester; Nanny Jones and Nancy Reed, both of Clay City. Also surviving are nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Cole; his second wife, Debbie Cole; five brothers; and a sister.
    There was no service nor visitation.

Addie Lee Cummins

    Addie Lee Cummins, age 89, of Richmond, Indiana, died Sunday, April 6, 2014 at Golden Living Center Golden Rule.
    She was born October 2, 1924 in Fox, Estill County, Kentucky to Henry Thomas and Hallie Rose Hawkins and lived in Richmond since 1955. She was a homemaker and formerly worked for Westinghouse in Richmond, Kentucky and was a member of College Hill Methodist Church in Richmond, Kentucky.
    Survivors include her four children: Wayne Hall of Oxford, Ohio; Carol Nelson (Bill), Chris Cummins (Kim), both of Richmond; and Hallie Brookshear (Bob Hunter) of Celina, Ohio; six grandchildren: Dwayne and Randy Hall, Kathy Brown, Anthony and Charlie Arnold, and Danyel Rostad; 16 great grandchildren, four great, great grandchildren; one brother, Russell Hawkins of Oxford, Ohio; two sisters, Bertie Floyd of Irvine, Kentucky; and Sue Caldwell of McKee, Kentucky; nieces and nephews.
    Addie’s family would like to express their gratitude for the care given her by the nurses, staff, and her roommate Angie at Golden Living Center Golden Rule.
    Her husband, David l. Cummins, died November 25, 2003; one grandson, Timothy Arnold; her parents, four brothers: Raymond, Willie, Henry, and Tommy Jr.; and one daughter-in-law, Micky Hall, are also deceased.
    Funeral services were at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, April 12, 2014 at Stegall-Berheide-Orr Funeral Home with Rev. Tim Floyd officiating. Burial was in Earlham Cemetery. Friends called 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Saturday, at the funeral home.
