John E. Gross, 81
John E. Gross, age 81, of Beavercreek, Ohio; brother of Delmus G. "Bunt" Gross of Irvine, passed away Sunday, May 18, 2014, at Hospice of Dayton.
He was born December 9, 1932, in Lee County, Kentucky, the son of Charles Maxwell and Emma D. Rogers Gross. He was a member of Alpha Baptist Church, and was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during the Korean War. He was a member of Xenia Masonic Lodge, #49, Xenia Chapter #36, R.A.M., the Wright Council #96, R & SM, Nathaniel Greene Commandery #81, Knights Templar, and Aldora Chapter #262, O.E.S. He was a former volunteer with the Xenia Township Fire Department. He retired in 1994 from Duriron in Dayton after 44 years of employment.
Mr. Gross is survived by his wife, Roxie (Marcum) Gross, whom he married, April 8, 1955; his children, Emma Ross (Mike), Beavercreek Township; and Tom (Blanche) Gross, Xenia, Ohio; four grandchildren, Dr. John Ross (Erin), Danville, Pennsylvania; Hanna Minges (Mike), Springboro, Ohio; Jeanne O’Callaghan (Dan), and Max Gross, all of Xenia, Ohio; five great grandchildren, Brenna, Ava, Lila, Tessa, and Danny; a sister and brother-in-law, Agnes & Larry Cretcher, Cherryvale, Kansas; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Virgil Bob & Lee Gross, Farmersville, Ohio; and Delmus "Bunt" & Emily Gross, Irvine; by numerous nieces and nephews, and by many close friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and by a brother, Delbert Gross.
John will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. The family would especially like to thank the staff of VITAS Hospice, Hospice of Dayton, and Grandview Hospital, for their care during this difficult time.
Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, May 23, at Neeld Funeral Home, 1276 N. Detroit Street, Xenia, Ohio. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m., Thursday, at the funeral home with Masonic services at 8 p.m. Burial will be in Valley View Memorial Gardens.

Ernest Eugene (Gene) White, 90, devoted husband of 68 years to Bobby Jean Brandenburg White, died on Sunday, May 18, 2014 at his home.
He was born in Lothair, Perry County, Kentucky on September 7, 1923, the son of Harlan H. and Bertha Mae York White. He was a veteran of World War II, serving his country in the 600th Squadron of the 398th Heavy Bombardment Group in the 8th Air Force of the United States Army Air Corp and was the recipient of six Bronze Stars for meritorious service in the European Theatre of Operation. He was retired from the Bluegrass Army Depot where his was Captain of Security. He was a member of Cedar Grove United Methodist Church, American Legion Post 79, and the Irvine Masonic Lodge.
Mr. White was preceded in death by his brother, Alfred (Marie) White; and his sister, Delores Faye Harris (Tommy).
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Jane Wilson (Gordon), Irvine; and a son, Anthony White (Paula), Berea; six grandchildren, Angela Flynn (Gerald), Julie Richardson (Kevin), Rebecca Fowler, all of Irvine; Jason (Hillary) White, Stafford, Virginia; Joseph White (Laurie), Fairmont, West Virginia; and Nora Lewin (Toby), Felicity, Ohio; 12 great grandchildren; four great, great grandchildren; one sister, Lorraine Bush, Lothair; and one brother, Harlan White Jr. (Elaine), Lexington; a special family friend, Susan Hawkins, Irvine; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Visitation will be Saturday, May 24th from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Cedar Grove United Methodist Church with a memorial service conducted at the church beginning at 1:00 p.m. with Anthony White, Joseph White, and Greg McClellan officiating.

Dorothy Lee Crowe Powell, age 96, of Elm Street in Ravenna, Kentucky, passed away Saturday, May 17, 2014, at the Irvine Nursing and Rehabilitation Center following a long illness.
She was born February 4, 1918 in Powell County and was the daughter of the late Owen and Lelia Crowe Armitage. She was a retired seamstress with Loma Manufacturing and was a member of the Estill County Homemakers. She was a member of the White Oak Church of God and the church’s Ladies Home Mission.
Mrs. Powell was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Raymond Powell.
She is survived by three daughters: Mae Tibbs (Arliss), Brenda Smyth (Bill), both of Ohio; and Carolyn Powell (Greg), Estill County; two sons: Breck Powell (Libby) and Tommy Powell (Pearl), both of Estill County; 17 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren, and 13 great, great grandchildren.
Mrs. Powell was preceded in death by two brothers: Russell and Harold Armitage.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 20th at the White Oak Church of God by Bro. Glyndon Woosley. Burial will be at the White Oak Cemetery. She was born July 22, 1971 to the late Say Patrick and Dorothy Kilburn Patrick.
Survivors include her mother, Dorothy Patrick; one son, Hunter Abner; two brothers: Sammy Patrick and Michael Patrick; one sister, Judy Bellamy; and a special Friend, Marty Abner.
Ms. Patrick was preceded in death by her father and by a son, Dustin Pelfrey.

J.B. Rogers, age 83, widower of Freda Rogers, passed away Thursday, May 15, 2014, at the Irvine, Kentucky, Nursing and Rehab Center.
He was a native of Jackson County, born September 19, 1930, a son of the late Levi and Angeline Cain Rogers. He was a retired farmer, and a member of the Pine Hill Baptist Church.
Mr. Rogers was preceded in death by his brothers: Lester, Chester, Troy, and Delbert Rogers; and his sisters: Mayme Pearson, Myrtle Adkins, and Nancy Rogers.
Survivors include his daughter Sharon Morris (Fudd); his granddaughter, Mary Beth Morris; his brothers: Everett and Junior Rogers; and his sister, Louise Anglin.

Zelmadene Rogers, age 84, of South Main Avenue in Highland Heights, Kentucky, passed away Thursday, May 15, 2014, at her son’s home after a short illness.
She was born April 5, 1930 in Estill County and was the daughter of the late Hubert and Edna Estes Johnson. She had formerly worked as a beautician and was an employee of the Disabled American Veterans. She had lived in Campbell County most of her life.
Mrs. Rogers was preceded in death by her husband, William Buford “Calvin” Rogers.
She is survived by two daughters: Brenda Joyce Hanson (Gerhard), Dent, Minnesota; and Doris Lynn Satterley, Cincinnati, Ohio; one son, William Michael Rogers (Deborah), Crittenden; four sisters: Leora Smith, Campbell County; Sue Abney, Faye Stewart, both of Estill County; and Nancy Teegarden, Butler County; three brothers: Virgil “Buddy” Johnson, Bellevue; James Johnson and Dallas Johnson, both of Estill County; seven grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and six great, great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Woody Satterley; two sisters: Beulah Mae Mayse and Phyllis Jean Shouse; and one brother, Floyd Merril Johnson.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 20th at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be at the Cobb Hill Cemetery. Friends may call after 11 a.m., Tuesday, at the funeral home.

Margaret Marie Ball Pitcher, age 81, of Waco, Kentucky, passed away Wednesday, May 14, 2014 at the Compassionate Care Center in Richmond.
She was born in Estill County on November 6, 1932 to the late Elba A. and Florence Miller Ball. Mrs. Pitcher retired from Eastern Kentucky University as a Librarian Clerk. She deeply loved her family and enjoyed reading. She was a member of the Flatwoods Christian Church.
On April 14, 1951, she united in marriage to Edward Pitcher, Jr. who preceded her in death in January 29, 1979.
Survivors include her son, Michael E. Pitcher (Elizabeth) of Versailles; two daughters: Connie Dennis (Kenneth) and Sharon S. Mason (Gary), all of Waco; two brothers: Elba A. Ball Jr. (Pat) and Ray M. Ball (Louise); two sisters: Wanda Parker and Carolyn Hall (John); five grandchildren: Patrick Dennis, Kevin Dennis, Jeremy Mason, Ben Pitcher and Natalie Pitcher; two great granddaughters: Kristyn Dennis and Kandace Dennis; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Pitcher was also preceded in death by: two sisters: Arveta Renfro and Geneva Hopper.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 17th at the Combs, Parsons & Collins Funeral Home, 328 W. Main Street, Richmond, with Bro. Tim Jones officiating. Burial will follow in the Flatwoods Cemetery.

Dennie Glenn Young, age 47, husband of Teresa Marcum Young, passed away Wednesday, May 14, 2014, at his home.
He was a native of Estill County, a son of Earl Young and Joyce Marcum Young. Mr. Young was a former police officer in the Ravenna Police Department and a former Fire Chief with the Irvine Fire Department. He was a gun collector and also loved tinkering with radios.
Survivors, other than his wife, Teresa, include his daughters: Stacy Young and Kayla Patrick (Bill); his parents, Earl Young (Ann), and Joyce Marcum Young; his siblings: Eddie Young (Deloris), Charlene Begley, Earl Young Jr, Wilma Rose (Terry), Stephanie Berryman (Jeff), and Kevin Young (Lila); his grandchildren: Taylor Patrick and William Ralph "Trey" Patrick, III; and special friends Shawn Moore, Chris Cox, and Ken White.

Leon Covey, age 61, husband of Teresa Mae Tipton Covey, passed away Sunday, May 11, 2014, at his home, after a long illness.
He was a native of Middletown, Ohio; born May 15, 1952, a son of Florence Gray Covey and the late Almassa Covey. He was a retired carpenter and a member of the Turning Point Apostolic Church. He was a United States Army veteran.
Mr. Covey was preceded in death by a brother Paul W. “Pete” Covey.
Survivors other than his wife Teresa include his sons: James Leon Covey, Chris Covey (Darla), John Covey, Matthew Covey (Emeli), and Almassa Covey; his daughter, Leona Covey; his grandchildren: Alexander Covey, Riley Covey, Oliver Covey, and Ariana Covey; his brothers: Al Covey (Wilma), Coleman Covey, and Gary Covey (Stella); his sisters: Diana Frymyer, Sherry Covey, Pam Brandenburg (Jerry), Leatha Burger (James), Carolyn Covey, and Magdalene Embs; and several nieces and nephews.

KSP Capt., ret., James Madison “Jimmy” Cox Jr., age 85, a resident of the Irvine, Kentucky, Health and Rehabilitation Center died on Saturday, May 10, 2014 at the Clark Regional Medical Center in Winchester.
Jim was born in Ravenna, Kentucky, to James Madison and Pearl Barger Cox. Two brothers, J.L. Cox of Louisville and Jewett Cox of Irvine, predeceased Mr. Cox. He was married to Juanita Winn of Irvine (they divorced in 1982). One son, Keith Madison Cox; and one grandson, Madison Alexander Cox; also predeceased Jim.
He is survived by one son, Charles Winn Cox (Beth); and one daughter, Jamee Barton (Larry). He has six surviving grandchildren, Charlie Cox, Chad Cox, Daniel Wells, Lexie Cox, Andrew and Heath Barton.
Jim was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving in the Korean War, and received the National Defense Service Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal, the UN Service Medal, and the Korean Service Ribbon (1 Star). He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Richmond, the American Legion, and the First Church of Nazarene in Irvine.
Mr. Cox retired from the Kentucky State Police as a Captain and worked for many years at Eastern Kentucky University in the Bureau of Training for law enforcement officials.
A memorial service will be held at Oldham, Roberts, and Powell Funeral Home, 1110 Barnes Mill Road in Richmond, on Wednesday, May 14th at 6:00 p.m., followed by a Masonic service at 7:00 p.m.

Walter C. Ballard, age 69, of Winchester, Kentucky, passed away surrounded by his family on Friday, May 9, 2014.
He was born on September 13, 1944 to the late Lee Ishmael Ballard and Velma Dawson Ballard. He was retired from Rockwell International and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
Walter is survived by his children; Greg Ballard of Winchester, Tina Ballard of Jacksonville, Florida; Justin Ballard of Irvine, Ryan Ballard of Winchester, Brendan Ballard (Stephanie) of Clay City, and Joann Allen (Nate) of Winchester; twelve grandchildren, Brandy McDuffard (Eddy), Brad Ballard, Madison Ballard, Alex Ballard, Jayda Ballard, Isaiah Ballard, Kaylei Ballard, Joshua Ballard, Aden Ballard, Destiny Wells, Landon Allen, and Dalton Allen; four great grandchildren, Caitlynn and Mayson McDuffard and Adrian and Addison Ballard; a sister, Dorothy Chism Ballard of Winchester; a brother, Harold (Linda) Ballard of Winchester; four nieces: Kim Baber (Bill), Shannon Bellamy (Paul), Melissa Konte, and Angela Christopher; a nephew, Anthony Ballard (Sophie); and several great nieces and nephews.

Visitation was from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Monday, May 12th at Scobee Funeral Home, 219 West Lexington Avenue, Winchester. Funeral services were conducted at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 13th at the funeral home by Pastor Billy Keller and Pastor Tom Hall. Burial was in the Winchester Cemetery.

Ora Lee Marcum Blackson-Thomas, age 84, of White Oak Road in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Friday, May 9, 2014, at the Marcum & Wallace Memorial Hospital.
She was born October 24, 1929 in Estill County and was the daughter of the late Roosevelt and Elizabeth Tyree Marcum. She was the former owner of Allen’s Grocery and a member of the Ravenna Church of the Nazarene. She worked as a volunteer at the Marcum & Wallace Memorial Hospital and was a member of the Twin City Players, the Estill County Garden Club and served as Queen Mother of the Red Hat Society.
Mrs. Blackson-Thomas was preceded in death by her husbands, Bobby Bowles, Buster Blackson and Bill Thomas.
She is survived by her son, Tim Bowles (Linda), Irvine; three sisters: Janice Witt, Carrollton; Wanda Crouch, Estill County; and Ladonna Muncie, Madison County; one brother: Marshall Ray Marcum, Estill County; four grandchildren: Sarah Jones, Chad Bowles, Brian Barnes and Courtney Barnes; and four great grandchildren: Alex Jones, Grace Jones, Ben Jones and Kaylee Barnes.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Carol Ann Meyers.
Funeral services were conducted at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 13th at the Ravenna Church of the Nazarene by Rev. Rob Steinbrook and Rev. Bob Mills. Burial was at the Sunset Memorial Gardens. She was born at Cob Hill, on October 2, 1924 to the late James Greenwood and Vicie Beckley Hall. She was a retired waitress at the Corner Drug Store in Winchester.
Survivors include her brother, James P. Hall (Harriette) of Winchester and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Sams was preceded in death by her sister, Beatrice Estes; and two brothers, Clarence Hall and Cecil Hall.

Obie Jarrod Lee Noland, age 26, of Hudson Avenue in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Wednesday, May 7, 2014, at his home.
He was born August 27, 1987 in Lexington and was the son of Phil and Connie Young Noland. He was a former tower worker and attended the White Oak Church of God. He had lived in Estill County all of his life.
Survivors, in addition to his father and mother, include his son, Waylon Gage Noland; his grandparents: Norma Young Martin and Betty Woolery Noland, both of Estill County; one sister, Jessica Lynn Noland, Estill County; his girlfriend, Samantha Riddell; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Obie Noland.
Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, May 10th at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Glyndon Woosley. Burial was at the White Oak Cemetery. Friends called between 6 and 9 p.m., Friday, May 9th at the funeral home.
Pallbearers were Glendle Flynn, Steve Woolery, Kim Woolery, Rick Woolery, Chris Flynn and Sammy Travis.
Honorary pallbearers were Waylon Noland and Lydia Noland.

Cecil Roy Shumate, age 69
Cecil Roy Shumate, age 69, of Frenchburg, Kentucky, formerly of Irvine, passed away Tuesday, May 6, 2014, at the Edgewood Estates Nursing Home following a long illness.
He was born June 19, 1944 in Clark County and was the son of the late Cecil Mark Shumate and Fairry Rose Shumate Warner. He was a retired truck driver and a veteran of the United States Navy. He was a member of the Bethel Christian Church and had lived in Estill County most of his life.
Mr. Shumate is survived by a sister, Alice Faye Houston, Georgetown; one brother, Randall Shumate, Irvine; and one half-brother, Roger Dale Warner, Irvine.
Funeral services were conducted at 12:00 Noon, Friday, May 9th at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. David Watson. Burial was at the Rose-Freeman Cemetery. Friends called after 11:00 a.m., Friday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers were Everett Collins, Wayne Collins, Travis Rose, Glenn Rose, Linville Ray Rose and Randy Shoemaker.

Meridith J. Dunaway, age 74, of West Elkton, Ohio; passed away on Monday, May 5, 2014 at Sycamore Hospital.
She was born on July 29, 1939 in Estill County, Kentucky, to the late Elmer and Lillian (Estes) Todd. Also preceding her in death is her husband, Millard T. “Dude” Dunaway (2008).
Mrs. Dunaway is survived by her children, Sherill Belvo (Jeff Simpson) of Carlisle, Ohio; Darlene Rhodes (Jerry) of West Elkton, Ohio; Billy Dunaway of Cincinnati, and James Morgan (Brenda) of Lexington; grandchildren, Daniel Belvo (Jennifer) , Rebecca Belvo (Kris Johnson), David Belvo (Jolene), Samuel Belvo (Heather), Russell Rhodes (Chelsea), Amber Harris (John), Jamie Hocker (Josh); great-grandchildren, Joseph, Calliegh, Jenson, Tyler, Ellie, Riley, Caiden, Joshlynn, Eric, Jameson, JC, Morgan, Brendan, Mariah; siblings, DL Todd (Phyllis), Melba Bush, both of Irvine; and Darrell Todd (Pam) of Richmond, Kentucky; and many other extended family and friends.
Meridith was a 1957 graduate of Irvine High School and worked as a housekeeper at Christel Manor She was a member of the Miamisburg First Church of the Nazarene. Meridith was a foster parent to over 60 children and enjoyed cooking, canning and gardening.
Family received friends from 12:00 Noon until 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 10th at Gebhart-Schmidt-Parramore Funeral Home, 508 East Linden Avenue, Miamisburg, Ohio; followed by the funeral service at 2 p.m. with Rev. Bob Herdman officiating. Interment followed at Highland Memorial Cemetery, Miamisburg.
If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Miamisburg First Church of the Nazarene, in memory of Meridith, at 1216 Richard Street, Miamisburg, OH 45342.

Harry Thomas Sr., age 93, of Fairfield, Ohio, passed away peacefully at his home Friday, May 2, 2014.
He was born to the late Vernon and Nannie Thomas, February 13, 1921, in a log cabin on the family farm in Estill County, Kentucky. He married Sylvia Trauthwein on December 4, 1943. Harry worked as a certified shop electrician until he retired from Cincinnati Industrial in 1983 to become a full-time farmer. He continued to work the farm he owned in Riley Township until 2005.
Mr. Thomas is survived by three sons: Harry Thomas Jr. (Jerri), Alan Thomas (Patricia), and Randal Thomas (Joyce); four sisters, Marcella Saylor, Elwanda Pearson, Joyce Chambers and Sue “Babe” Johnson (Richard); eight grandchildren, Sonya Hockwalt (Christopher), Shanda Thomas, Harry Thomas III, Ryan Johnston (Erica), Alana Bernhardt (Randy), Michelle Thomas, Christopher Thomas (Denise) and Stephanie Hunt (Kevin); and 16 great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by Sylvia, his wife of 56 years; his sister, Dorothy Massie; and his brothers, Raymond Thomas, Eugene Thomas, Jennings Thomas and Vernon Thomas Jr.
Visitation was 5 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, May 7th at Avance Funeral Home and Crematory in Fairfield. Funeral services were at 10 a.m., Thursday, May 8th at the funeral home with Pastor Josh Willis officiating. Entombment followed in St. Stephens Cemetery.
