Elmer Townsend Jr., 86

    Elmer Townsend Jr., age 86, of Jackson Ferry Road in Winchester, Kentucky, passed away at his residence, Sunday, June 29, 2014.
    He was born in Clark County, the son of Elmer and Elizabeth Abney Townsend.
    Mr. Townsend was the widower of Mary Gross Townsend and was a retired farmer.
    He is survived by seven sons: Randall, Larry, Richard, David, Jerry, Ronald and Ernest Townsend; three daughters: Freda Anderson, Teresa Shoemaker and Debra Berryman; two brothers: Ralph and Gerald Townsend; two sisters: Nancy Burton and Ruby Moore; and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
    He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Elizabeth Townsend; his wife, Mary Townsend; and two daughters: Geraldine Hall and Anna Sue Patrick.
    Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, July 3rd at the Grayson Funeral Home Chapel, 201 7th Avenue in Clay City with Rev. Jerry Hatton officiating. Friends may visit 6-8 p.m., Wednesday, July 2nd at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Cobb Hill Cemetery.

Jewell Morton Scrivner Wagers, 94

    Jewell Morton Scrivner Wagers, age 94, widow of Ernest Quinn Wagers, passed away Saturday, June 28, 2014, at the Irvine, Kentucky, Health and Rehab Center after a long illness.
    She was a native of Estill County, born February 3, 1920, a daughter of the late John Morton Scrivner and Minnie Rice Scrivner. Mrs. Wagers was a member of the South Irvine Christian Church where she served as church clerk for 63 years. She was a former employee of Crouch’s Town & Country and Rite-Way.
    Mrs. Wagers was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Quinn Wagers; her son, Larry Wagers; her brother, Carlton Scrivner; her sister, Eudell Scrivner; and her friend, Lillian Alcorn.
    Survivors include her daughter, Phyllis Wagers; her daughter-in-law, Joan Fowler Wagers; her grandson, Steven Wagers ( Amber) Wagers; great-grandchildren Sarah and Shelby Wagers; and her friend Dora Winkle.
    Services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, July 5th, at Lewis Funeral Home with Bro. Michael Chism and Bro. Glendon Mays officiating. Burial will follow in the Brinegar Cemetery. Friends may call anytime after 6:00 p.m., Friday, July 4th.
    Pallbearers will be Steven Wagers, Frank Pittman, Dr. Garnett Brown, and Danny Fowler.
    Honorary pallbearers will be Winfred Winkle, Jerry Rice, Don Fletcher, Lloyd Roberts, Donald Richardson, Raymond Alcorn, Donald Hall, and Paul “Red” Roberts.

Clark Alcorn

    Clark Alcorn, age 97, of Corydon, Indiana, died Friday, June 27, 2014, at Floyd Memorial Hospital in New Albany, Indiana.
    He was born May 23, 1917, in Wagersville, Kentucky, to the late Bev and Lillie Barker Alcorn. He was retired from the Naval Ordnance Station near Richmond, Kentucky; and Wenning’s Packing Company in Central Barren, Indiana; was a farmer, was a member of Potato Run United Methodist Church near Corydon and was a United States Army veteran of World War II.
    He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dessie Jane Neal Alcorn; his son, Roger Lee Alcorn; his sisters: Sarah Chaney and Maranda Alcorn; and his brothers: Matt, Henry, Earl, and Sherman Alcorn.
    Survivors include his sons: Earl Zyndell Alcorn (Pamela) and Timothy W. Alcorn (Tammy) both of Corydon; his daughters: Fredia E. Naegele (Fred) and Betty L. Fessel, both of Corydon; his brothers: Wilse Alcorn of Carlyle, Ohio and Mitchell Alcorn (Karen) of Corydon; his sister, Gracie Sandlin (Floyd) of Hamilton, Ohio; 11 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and three great, great grandchildren.
    Funeral services were at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 1, 2014, at Beanblossom-Cesar Funeral Home in Corydon. Rev. Larry Hensley officiated. Burial was in Jordan Cemetery near Corydon.
    Visitation was from 11:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m., Monday, June 30th and after 9:00 a.m., Tuesday, at the funeral home.
    Pallbearers were Roger, Randy, and Ray Fessel, Todd and Jason Naegele, and Ethan Alcorn.
    The family requests that expressions of sympathy be made to Potato Run United Methodist Church.

Clifton Eugene Watkins

    Clifton Eugene Watkins, age 81, of Irvine, Kentucky, was born October 4, 1932, and departed to his heavenly home, Friday, June 27, 2014. He went home to be with Jesus. He was a member of New Vision Full Gospel Church and he served in the United States Army for three years.
    He is survived by his wife, Barbara Seale Watkins; two daughters: Virginia Waites (Ray) of Lexington, Kentucky; and LeAnn Watkins of Adrian, Michigan; two stepdaughters, Debra Hendry (Myron) of Orlando, Florida and Angie Metcalf (Ken) of Winchester; one stepson, Timothy Powell of Irvine; five grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, three great grandchildren; four sisters: Gloria Caudill (Tom), Mary Johnson (Paul), Linda Poe, and Nada Taylor; one brother, Harold Watkins; and a host of nieces and nephews, friends and loved ones.
    He was preceded in death by his parents, Matt and Laura Watkins; one sister, Mollie Watkins; three brothers: Matt Watkins Jr., Herbert Watkins, and Virgil Watkins; and one special brother-in-law, Geo Seale.
    Funeral services were held at 11:00, Tuesday, July 1st at Newnam Funeral Home, 108 Center Street in Beattyville with Bro. Elmer Ray Mays and Pastor Kenneth Metcalfe officiating. Burial was in the McIntosh Cemetery in Beattyville. Friends called on Monday, June 30th, 6-9 p.m., at the funeral home.

Larry Barnett

    Larry Barnett, age 61, of South Highlands Street in Winchester, Kentucky, passed away Saturday, June 21, 2014 at his residence.
    He was an employee of Adams Heating and Cooling and a member of The Black Creek Holiness Church.
    Mr. Barnett is survived by one son, Terry Wayne Barnett of Mt. Sterling; three brothers: Jerry Barnett (Sadie) of Mt. Sterling, Carl Barnett (Shawneda) of Winchester, and James Barnett ( Robertta) of West Liberty; and four sisters: Marlene Jones of Winchester, Marie Crain of Flemingsburg, Judy Barnett of Winchester, and Diane Stamper (Jimmy) of Irvine.
    He was preceded in death by his parents, Wayne and Ivia Barnett, and two brothers, Billy and Eugene Barnett.
    Funeral Services were held at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 24th at the Grayson Funeral Home Chapel, 201 7th Avenue, Clay City. Friends visited from 11:00 a.m. until time of the service on Tuesday. Burial was in the Rose Cemetery.

Donald Ray Witt

    Donald Ray Witt, age 72, husband of Shirley Moore Witt, passed away on Wednesday, June 18, 2014 at Baptist Health in Lexington, Kentucky.
    He was born on April 18, 1942, in Estill County, to Louise Wagers Witt and the late Ray Witt. He was retired from Trane and a member of the 101 Club. He was a Vietnam Army Veteran and a member of The American Legion Post 8, where he was a former commander. He was a member of Porter Memorial Baptist Church, a VFW Trustee, a Kentucky Colonel and member of the Singing Saints Choir.
    In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by three children: Donald Wayne Witt of Louisville, Rebecca Susan (Jay) Richardson of Louisville and Christopher Don Witt of Berea; eight grandchildren: Lauren, Cody, Trenton, Hope, Zander, Jaxsen, Sarina and Kailyn Witt; one sister, Nancy Sewell of Colorado; one niece and one nephew.
    Services were conducted at 2:30 p.m., Monday, June 23rd at Scobee Funeral Home, 219 West Lexington Avenue, Winchester, by Pastor Bill Henard and Pastor Bob Justice. Burial wase in Winchester Cemetery. Pallbearers were members of the 101 Club. Visitation was from 1:30 p.m. until time of service, Monday, at the funeral home.

Danis Combs

    Danis Combs, age 90, of Hazard, Kentucky, formerly of Irvine, died Wednesday, June 18, 2014, at his home in Hazard.
    He was born in Breathitt County, Kentucky, on July 4, 1923 to Lee Combs and Margaret Combs.
    Mr. Combs is survived by his children: Beulah Mae Napier (T.J.), Burley Combs (Betty), Charlie Combs (Ruth),Ola Faye Neace (Calvin), Linda Smith (JR), Hurley Combs (Polly), Lula Watts, Brenda Stacy (Jerry) and Danny Combs; a sister, Mallie Ritchie; and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren
    He was preceded in death by his wife, Flora Ritchie Combs; a daughter, Virgie Combs; and two grandchildren; Cody and Brian.
    Estill and Powell County area friends called for visitation Thursday, July 19th at the Knowlton Church of God on KY-218 in Stanton after 6 p.m. with services conducted at 7 p.m. with Bro. Kenny Wasson and Bro. Terry Barnes officiating. Visitation was also held at Hindman Funeral Services on Friday, June 20th with funeral services at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, June 21st. Burial followed at Combs-Ritchie Cemetery, Ary, Kentucky.

    Barbara “Colie” Jenkins, age 74, of Red Lick Road in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Tuesday, June 17, 2014, at the Compassionate Care Center in Richmond, following a long illness.
    She was born October 5, 1939 in Estill County and was the daughter of the late Willard and Bessie Canter Ingram. She was a retired cook with the Estill County School System and was a member of the Eastern Star. She had lived in Estill County all of her life.
    Mrs. Jenkins is survived by her husband: Stanley Tracy Jenkins; on daughter: Monica Faye Newman, Berea; one son, Roy Wayne Ashcraft (Janetta), Waco; one stepson, David Jenkins (Paula), Irvine; three grandchildren: Brian Ashcraft, Zack Newman and Trevor Jenkins.
    She was preceded in death by two sisters: Wautassie Graham and Pansy Tuggle.
    Funeral services were conducted at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, June 21st at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Sherl Thomas. Burial was at the South Irvine Cemetery. Friends called between 6 and 9 p.m., Friday, June 20th at the funeral home.
    Pallbearers were Keith Tuggle, Willard Drew Tuggle, Phillip Freeman, Brian Ashcraft, Zack Newman and Trevor Jenkins.
    Honorary pallbearers were Ronnie Clowers, Timmy Joe Clowers and Larry Stewart.

    Mildred Zereda Fore Crowe, age 92, of Pine Street in Ravenna, Kentucky, passed away Tuesday, June 17, 2014, at her home following a long illness.
    She was born November 21, 1921 in Harlan County and was the daughter of the late George Arlo and Bessie Neal Fore. She was a former ASC employee and an Avon salesperson. She was a member of the Ravenna Church of God and had lived in Estill County most of her life.
    Mrs. Crowe is survived by her husband, George Walker Crowe; her son, Charles Crowe (Loretta), Ravenna; two grandchildren: Shonna Ballard (Arthur David) and Monica Arvin (Paul "Bird"), and four great grandchildren: Whitney Ballard, Mariah Ballard, Haley Lisle and Cade Lisle.
    She was preceded in death by three sisters: June Littleton, Dorcas Duncun and Bernice Taylor; and three brothers: Clement, Cleopas and Linus Fore.
    Funeral services were conducted at 1:00 p.m., Friday, June 20th at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Kenneth Steele. Burial was at the Turpin Cemetery. Friends called between 6 and 9 p.m., Thursday, June 19th at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home.

Estill County Agricultural Fair Promises Ten Days of Continuous Excitement

Fireworks Extravaganza On Tuesday, July 1st
    The Estill County Agricultural Fair opens Saturday, June 28, 2014 and promises "Ten Days of Excitement" with ATV drag races, beauty contests, farm shows, talent contests, ATV mud runs, a demolition derby, fireworks and two horse show, before it ends on Saturday, July 12th.
    Along with the traditional shows and rides, this year's fair continues the Coca Cola Talent Contest. Come out on Thursday night and show off your talent.
    The Estill County Fair's annual "Fourth of July Fireworks Extravaganza" takes place on Tuesday, July 1st.
    The traditional fair will be followed the next weekend with a Summer Pleasure and Fun Horse Show on Friday, July 11th followed by a Walking Horse Show on Saturday, July 12th.

Dry Ridge Road South in Estill County to be closed June 27-29

Intersection with KY 89 to be realigned as part of safety improvement project
    As part of a safety improvement project along KY-89 North (Winchester Road) in Estill County, Dry Ridge Road South will be closed the weekend of June 27-29 to allow for the reconstruction of the KY 89-Dry Ridge Road intersection.
    Dry Ridge Road will be closed around 5 p.m. on Friday, June 27 at the southernmost KY-89 intersection, near the Calloway Creek bridge, and will remain closed until Monday morning, June 29.
    Drivers can use the northernmost intersection of KY-89 and Dry Ridge Road near Hargett as a detour route while the southernmost terminus of Dry Ridge Road is closed.
    Motorists using KY 89 in this area should be aware of possible delays while the work is ongoing.

Winchester Road (KY-89N) Open To Two Lanes

Delays of 10-15 minutes expected
    A section of KY 89 North in Estill County that had been reduced to one lane with traffic controlled by temporary signals for nearly a month, was reopened to two-lane traffic on Monday, June 23rd.
    The affected area between milepoints 15.5 and 16.0 (between Dry Ridge Road North and Dry Branch Road) is still an active construction zone; so, drivers should use caution and expect possible temporary delays.
