Large Crowd Attends Jackson Energy's 76th Annual Meeting
Winners of $2,000 College Scholarships Announced
Clear skies and perfect temperatures brought out a large crowd for Jackson Energy's 76th annual meeting.
Held on July 3, the event had a decidedly patriotic theme and co-op members drove under a large flag held by two Jackson Energy bucket trucks as they entered the annual meeting grounds.
Several thousand Jackson Energy members and visitors gathered in the field on KY HWY 290 to visit vendor tents, community exhibits, the cruise-in car show and enjoy entertainment and fireworks.
The Ladies for Liberty performed two shows, including one of music in the style of the popular 1940s group The Andrews Sisters. In keeping with the patriotic theme, a red, white and blue banner featuring a lineman and patriotic bunting decorated the main stage under the big tent.
Jackson Energy President & CEO Carol Wright addressed the crowd at the business meeting and urged co-op members to voice their concerns about recently announced EPA regulations. Wright warned members the regulations will raise electric rates and said now is the time to speak out about keeping rates affordable.
Three Jackson Energy board members were re-elected during the business meeting. They were Fred Callahan, Owsley County; Ted Cundiff, Lee County; and Keith Binder, South Laurel County.
Wright and Board Chairman Phil Thompson also recognized scholarship winners and students who participated in this year's Washington Youth Tour program.
Keavy’s Chris Smith was presented the 2014 Lineman Scholarship. Smith won a $3,500 scholarship to attend the Lineman's Training Program at Somerset Community College.
Winners of the $2,000 college scholarship were - Rachel Gaines, Jackson County; Tanner Hacker, Clay County; Adam Holmes, Owsley County; Justin Austin, Lee County; Michael Witt, Estill County; Evan Singleton, Rockcastle County; Sawyer Holcomb, North Laurel; and Zachary Schoolcraft, South Laurel.
Washington Youth Tour students who were recognized at the meeting were Matthew Herald, Laurel County; Jaclyn Johnson, Jackson County; Karlie Reed, Laurel County; and Andie Walters, Laurel County.
Herald was also honored for being selected as Kentucky's delegate to the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association's Youth Leadership Council. He will represent Kentucky at the 2015 NRECA Annual Meeting and attend leadership training in Washington, D.C.
