Marching Engineers Finish First In Class
Estill Engineers Marching Band
|
Estill Finishes 3rd Overall
The Estill County Marching Engineers traveled to Montgomery County this past weekend to compete in their second regular season competition.
After a disappointing start last week, the band was anxious to see if their week of hard work and rehearsal would pay off . . . and it did. The band finished 1st place in their class, outscoring the other four bands in 2A in preliminary competition.
They advanced to finals to competition where they placed 3rd overall out of 11 bands, behind only Madison Central and last year’s 3A champs, Bourbon Co. Their score improved nearly 10 points from last week.
“This is more like it,” remarked band director Jason Bowles. “I have never had a group improve this much over the course of a week. The entire attitude has changed for the better, and now the band is right where they need to be for this early in the season.
“I think the realization has finally hit that we can be even better than last year’s group. It’s going to be another fun season and we are hoping for, and working toward, amazing results at the end.”
Next week, the band will travel to Mason County where they will meet up with another large class of 2A bands.

Milling and paving projects to result in delays, parking restrictions in Estill County
Milling and Paving May Cause Delays
JACKSON, KY – Milling and paving on three highways in Estill County will result in traffic delays and some parking restrictions beginning Thursday, Sept. 11.
Resurfacing is scheduled for the following routes:
• KY 52 (River Drive in Irvine and Main Street in Ravenna) between Court Street
and KY 1571,
• KY 2461 (Broadway in Irvine) between KY 89 and KY 52 in Ravenna, and
• KY 1571 (Millers Creek Road, also known as River Road) between KY 52
at both ends.
Prior to paving, milling of the existing pavement will take place. Milling of the curb-and-gutter section of KY 52 will begin Thursday, Sept. 11, and will continue through Friday if necessary. Paving will begin on Saturday. Drivers should expect delays while this work is ongoing.
Milling on Broadway will begin on Monday morning, Sept. 15, with paving scheduled for the following day. Parking on Broadway will be restricted on these days, and all vehicles will need to be moved off the street while the work is ongoing. The Irvine Division of Police will be notifying residents along Broadway of the parking restrictions.
Bridge ends on KY 1571 will be milled on Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 16-17, with paving to follow thereafter. This will impact travel between Beattyville and Irvine and drivers should expect delays while the work is underway.
All schedules are tentative and subject to change due to the weather or other unforeseen events. Drivers should slow down as they approach these construction zones, watch for stopped traffic and obey the directions of flaggers. Motorists are asked to be aware of workers, traffic control devices and construction equipment when traveling in these and other areas where projects are ongoing.
