Return of Fall Demo Derby

Estill County Fairgrounds
    The Fall Demolition Derby returns to the Estill County Fairgrounds on South Irvine Road, this coming Saturday night at 7 p.m. with action for both larger cars and small cars.
    Entry fee is $50.00 for each. Prize money for large cars is $1,500 for 1st place, $500 for 2nd place and $200 for 3rd. Small car prize money is $1000 for 1st place, $400 for 2nd place and $200 for 3rd.
    Gates open at 4 p.m. and tech time begins at 5 p.m. The show starts at 7:00 p.m.

KY-52 East Closed East of KY-213

Use KY-1571 As Alternative Route
    JACKSON, KY – In order to replace a drainage pipe, the Kentucky Department of Highways plans to close KY 52 East, in Estill County on Thursday, October 9, 2014. The road will be closed at milepoint 15.0, which is 0.6 miles east of the KY 213 intersection on Tipton Ridge. The project will begin around 8:30 a.m. and will continue until approximately 3 p.m. During this time, the road will be closed to all through traffic.
    No marked detour will be posted, but drivers can use KY 1571 as an alternate route. Motorists should plan their trips accordingly.
    In case of inclement weather, the closure will be postponed until another suitable day.

Millers Creek Bridge To Be Closed

Use KY-52 East (Tipton Ridge) As Alternative Route
    JACKSON, KY – In order to make repairs to a bridge, the Kentucky Department of Highways plans to close KY 1571 in Estill County on Thursday, October 16. The road will be closed at milepoint 0.4, at the one-lane bridge crossing Cow Creek just east of Ravenna. The project will begin around 8:30 a.m. and will continue until approximately 3 p.m. During this time, the road will be closed to all through traffic. This will impact travel between Lee and Owsley counties and Irvine and Richmond.
    No marked detour will be posted, but drivers can use KY 52 East (Tipton Ridge) as an alternate route. Motorists should plan their trips accordingly.
    In case of inclement weather, the closure will be postponed until another suitable day.

Darelene Parsell

    Darelene Parsell, age 58, of Clay City, Kentucky, passed away Saturday, October 4, 2014, at the Markey Cancer Center in Lexington.
    She was a housewife and a member of the Jason Riddle Church of God.
    Ms. Parsell is survived by one son, Mark Hatton of Clay City; two daughters: Crystal Hatton of Clay City and Lora Hollon of Monticello; two brothers: A. L. Hatton and Arthur Hatton (Ruby), both of Tyler, Michigan; one sister, Ora Ann Hatton of Clay City; and six grandchildren.
    She was preceded in death by her parents, Alison and Doris Hatton.
    No services are planned at this time. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Ray Roberts, 68

    Ray Roberts, age 68, of Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Saturday, October 4, 2014 at his home.
    He was the son of Roland and Emily Johnson Roberts, born in Owsley County on July 31, 1946. He was a roofer and was of the Holiness Faith. He enjoyed trading and fishing and was known for his ability to work on vehicles and his work as a builder.
    On October 26, 1964, Mr. Roberts united in marriage to Kathleen Hall Roberts, who passed away on November 8, 2011 after 47 years of marriage.
    Survivors include three sons: Robert Lee Roberts (Linda) of Berea, Michael Ray Roberts and Marty Roberts (Lisa) both of Kingston; three daughters: Sharon Raye Robertson (Chuck), Ruth Centers (fiancé: Chigger), both of Richmond; and Kathy Lynn Jefferson (fiancé: Danny) of Mt. Vernon; two brothers: Clarence Roberts (Liz) and Glenn Roberts; his sister, Rosie Luedtke; nine grandchildren: Christopher Lee Roberts, Erikka Moore (Dean), Charles Robertson (Brittany), James Codey Centers, Brittney Rader (Michael), Felicia Roberts, Kelsey Jefferson, Logan Roberts and Samantha Roberts; and six great grandchildren: Carlie Kathleen Moore, Aubri Rader, Cameron Moore, Hayden Rader, Peyton Robertson and Austin Bolton.
    In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Roberts was also preceded in death by two brothers: Robert Lee Roberts and Mose Roberts; his sister, Helen Marie Cole; and his grandson, Gillus Cole Allen “Papaw’s Lil Man.”
    The funeral service was conducted at 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 7th at the Combs, Parsons & Collins Funeral Home, 328 West Main Street, Richmond, with Bro. Howard Dean officiating. Burial followed in the Flatwoods Cemetery. Visitation was after 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, at the funeral home.
    Pallbearers were Danny Allen, Lester Roberts, Doug Roberts, and his three sons.
    Honorary pallbearers were James Scott Centers, Dean Moore, Charles Robertson, Chigger Oliver and James Codey Ray Centers.

Teresa Lynn Burton, 50

    Teresa Lynn Burton, age 50, of Spout Springs Road in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Friday, October 3, 2014, at the Irvine Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, following a long illness.
    She was born August 13, 1964 in Estill County and was the daughter of the late Henry Clay and Juanita Mae Handy Burton. She was a homemaker and had lived in Estill County all of her life.
    She is survived by her husband, David Richardson; one daughter, Tina Manson (Robert), Winchester; two sons, Christopher Ray Burton (Amanda) and Joseph Daniel Burton, both of Irvine; one sister, Nina Jean Watkins, Irvine; one brother, Omar Wayne Burton, Irvine; and three grandchildren.
    Teresa was preceded in death by one sister, Jessica Faye Barnett and one brother, Thomas Clay Burton.
    Funeral services were conducted at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 7th at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Beverly Arvin. Burial was at the Beatty Place Cemetery in Lee County. Friends called between 6 and 9 p.m., Monday, October 6th at the funeral home.

    Mayme S. Kindred Hisel, age 95, a resident of the Irvine, Kentucky, Nursing and Rehabilitation Center passed away Friday, October 3, 2014, at the Center, following a long illness.
    She was born April 17, 1919 in Estill County and was the daughter of the late Melvin and Nannie French Kindred. She was a homemaker and a member of the Beaver Pond Christian Church. She had lived in Estill County all of her life.
    Mrs. Hisel was preceded in death by her husband, Ambrose Hisel.
    She is survived by three daughters: Lois Crowe, Marjorie Shepherd and Edith Crane, all of Irvine; three grandchildren: Jason Crowe & fiancé, Katie; Jarrod Winkle (Julie) and Terry Winkle & fiancé, Janna; two great grandchildren: Brittany Dannelly and Heaven Lee Winkle; one stepgrandchild, Eli Jones; and several nieces and nephews.
    She was preceded in death by an infant daughter; three sons-in-law: Bobby Crowe, Amos Rice and Lloyd Shepherd; and one brother, Everett Kindred.
    Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, October 5 at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Glendon Mayes. Burial was at the Kindred Cemetery. Friends called after 10:30 a.m., Sunday at the funeral home.

Chrystal Abney Hurst

    Chrystal Abney Hurst, age 100, widow of James A. Shoemaker and Sam Hurst, passed away Thursday, October 2, 2014.
    She was born May 19, 1914 in Estill County to the late George and Mollie Abney.
    Survivors include two sons: Edwin Shoemaker (Freida), Richmond; and Velmer Shoemaker, Beaver Creek, Ohio; three grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and nine great, great grandchildren.
    She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, James Addison Shoemaker and Sam Hurst; a daughter and son-in-law, Anna Dale and Stanley Bennett; a daughter in law, Dixie Shoemaker; and a sister, Opal Patrick.
    Services were at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, October 4th at Davis & Davis Funeral Home, 777 College Avenue, Stanton, by Bro. Henry Johnson. Visitation was after 11:00 a.m., Saturday, at the funeral home. Burial was in the Stanton Cemetery.

Delbert Embs Jr.

    Delbert Embs, Jr., age 72, of Winchester, Kentucky, passed peacefully from this life, Wednesday evening, October 1, 2014, after a long battle with cancer.
    He is survived by his wife, Kathy Embs; his daughter, Paige Embs; and his son, Logan Embs; all of Winchester.
    Born June 8, 1942 in Bourbon County, he was preceded in death by his father and mother, Delbert Embs Sr. and Lenna (Allen) Embs; a sister, Marjorie Pennock; a brother, Larry Embs; and a special nephew, Jeff Winkle.
    He is also survived by two sisters, Betty Winkle of Irvine and Pat Tudor (Robert) of Lexington; three brothers: Doyle Embs (Diane), Lexington; Gary Embs (Linda), Riley, Ohio; and Don Embs, Irvine; and an aunt, Grace Berryman, Winchester. He leaves behind a host of cousins, nieces, and nephews.
    Mr. Embs was retired from Osram-Sylvania in Winchester. He loved music and developed many special friendships with those who sang and played music with him. He played in the Generation Center and in area nursing homes.
    Services were conducted at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, October 4th at Scobee Funeral Home, 219 West Lexington Avenue, Winchester; by Pastor Chris Williams and Pastor Lee Cruse. Burial was in Log Lick Cemetery.
    Pallbearers were Logan Embs, Jim Tudor, Mark Wiggam, Steve Hall, Rob Jones, John Breitenbach and Barry Baskin.
    Visitation was Friday, October 3rd, from 5:00-8:00 p.m., at the funeral home.

Dr. William Edward Wise

    Dr. William Edward Wise, age 96, of Ravenna, Kentucky, passed away Wednesday, October 1, 2014 after a short illness.
    He was born February 3, 1918, the son of the late Wilbur and Matilda Ann Martin Wise.
    He was a graduate of Eastern Teachers College and Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine. He was a retired Associate Professor of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Kentucky and also a retired Colonel in the United States Army Reserve. He was a charter member of the Estill County Historical and Genealogical Society, a 60-year Mason and past master, Irvine Lodge 137 F&AM, served for 30 years with the Estill County 4-H Council, and was a member of the River Drive Christian Church.
    Dr. Wise is survived by one son; William Edward Wise II and his wife Dixie; three granddaughters: Laura Beth Wise, Victoria Madison Wise, and Olivia Jo Wise; one great grandson, Robert Xavier White.
    Dr. Wise was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Walters Wise; two brothers: F. Marshall Wise and Maxie Hubert Wise; one sister, Lillian Russell Wise; one grandson, William Edward Wise III.
    Graveside services were held Sunday, October 5th at 2:00 p.m., at the Turpin Cemetery with Bro. Paul Groves officiating.

Paul Timothy “Tim” Spivey

    Paul Timothy “Tim” Spivey, age 41, of Longview, Texas went to be with his Heavenly Father on September 30, 2014.
    Tim was born in Lexington, Kentucky on June 9, 1973. He graduated from GRC High School in Winchester, Kentucky and continued his education to receive a Bachelor's of Chemical Engineering from Purdue University. Tim was awarded 31 patents during his accomplished career.
    Tim was an avid photographer and enjoyed water sports, movies, co-owning Drover Ranch Longhorn Lean Beef, and travel. He was a dedicated member of Mobberly Baptist Church of Longview, Texas, and had a heart for serving youth, missions, and teaching bible study and Financial Peace University. His great love for the Lord was known by all.
    Tim was married to Lindsey Frank Spivey on August 9, 2009, recently celebrating their 5 year anniversary.
    Tim is survived by his children, Kendra Spivey, Cody Spivey and Sydney Spivey, and was anxiously awaiting the arrival of his son Sebastian Spivey in March 2015; his wife Lindsey; parents, Paul and Millie Spivey; brother, Curtis Spivey (Sheri); grandparents, RJ and Gertrude Spivey; loving in-laws, aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, cousins and many dear, life-long friends.
    He was preceded in death by grandparents Frank Richardson Jr., and Susie Richardson Babb.
    Funeral Services were held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 7th at the Combs, Parsons & Collins Funeral Home, 328 West Main Street, Richmond with Rev. Jeff Prosser officiating. Burial followed in the Richmond Cemetery. Visitation was from 6-9 p.m, Monday evening, October 6th at the funeral home.

    Samuel Glenn Lambert, age 71, a resident of the Irvine, Kentucky, Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, passed away Saturday, September 27, 2014, at the Marcum and Wallace Memorial Hospital after a long illness.
    He was born February 22, 1943, in Estill County, the son of the late Foister and Ella Jo Brinegar. He was a self-employed painter and had lived in Estill County most of his life.
    Mr. Lambert is survived by two daughters: Dreama Dawn Lambert, Winchester; and Tassie Lynn Sias, Alabama; three sons: Samuel Dewayne Lambert, Joseph Glenn Lambert and Phillip Nile Fowler, all of Estill County; four sisters: Ina Lois Jewell Elliott, Nora “Catherine” Brinegar McGee (Delmar), Phyllis Jo Brinegar Horn (Jimmy), and Patricia “Patty” Dean Brinegar Eades (Jerry); and three brothers: Foister “Duke” Junior Brinegar (Mary), Sonny Brinegar, and Jackie Lee “Jack” Brinegar (Janice).

Roger O’Connell Milby

    Roger O’Connell Milby, age 65, of Sycamore Street in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Friday, September 26, 2014, at the University of Kentucky Hospital after a short illness.
    He was born September 13, 1949 in Greensburg, Kentucky, the son of the late Forster and Leomie Judd Milby. He was the former vice president of Consumer Loans at Citizens Guaranty Bank and had lived in Estill County for the last 30 years. He attended the First Church of God.
    Mr. Milby is survived by his wife, Shirley Lynn Rawlins Milby; one son: Matthew Leonard Milby (Tammi), Irvine; three stepdaughters: Shannon Faith Pond, Christy Lee Witt, both of Winchester; and Amanda Ann Patrick, Lexington; two stepsons: Johnnie Lee Patrick II (Jackie), Irvine; and Robert Tracy Patrick (Shawn), Lexington; one sister, Pamela Milby Lobb, Greensburg; and eleven grandchildren: Maddox Ann Milby, Paislee Rae Milby, Emma Faith Taylor, Ryan Allen Patrick, Alex Matthew Patrick, Michael Brandon Cummins, Nathan Luebke, Elizabeth Evans (Hunter), Brennon Luebke, Savannah Brandenburg and Dakota Brandenburg.

    Gladys Lura Covey Sandusky, age 88, passed away Tuesday, September 23, 2014.
    She was born on March 8, 1926, in Irvine, Kentucky, to the late Adam Tyree Covey and Bessie Lee Fletcher. Ms. Sandusky was a Jehovah's Witness.
    She is survived by her daughter, Peggy Sandusky of Springfield; three grandchildren: Michael Sandusky (April) of Lancaster, Melissa Murphy and Preston Eugene Puckett; great grandchildren, Taylor Murphy, Lindsey Woodis (Andrew), Alyssa Sandusky, Mike Sandusky, Tanner Sandusky, and other great grandchildren; two sisters, Jean Hays of Frankfort, and D. McMillian of Florida; and a brother, Morris Covey of Northern Kentucky.
    The family will have a private service at a later date.
    Clark Legacy Center of Frankfort is handling arrangements.
