Millers Creek Bridge To Be Closed
Use KY-52 East (Tipton Ridge) As Alternative Route
JACKSON, KY – In order to make repairs to a bridge, the Kentucky Department of Highways plans to close KY 1571 in Estill County on Thursday, October 16. The road will be closed at milepoint 0.4, at the one-lane bridge crossing Cow Creek just east of Ravenna. The project will begin around 8:30 a.m. and will continue until approximately 3 p.m. During this time, the road will be closed to all through traffic. This will impact travel between Lee and Owsley counties and Irvine and Richmond.
No marked detour will be posted, but drivers can use KY 52 East (Tipton Ridge) as an alternate route. Motorists should plan their trips accordingly.
In case of inclement weather, the closure will be postponed until another suitable day.

Wilbur Wright Crowe, 80, of the Bybee Community of Madison County, Kentucky, passed away Sunday, October 12, 2014 at the Compassionate Care Center in Richmond.
Mr. Crowe, the son of John and Bertha Babb Crowe, was born on December 17,1933 in Fleming County, Kentucky. After many years of faithful service, he retired from IBM. He enjoyed auctioneering and was known for his love of trading knives and guns. He was a member of the Waco Masonic Lodge # 338 F. & A.M. He was also a member of the Westside Christian Church where he’d served as Deacon, Elder and Sunday School Superintendent.
On June 27, 1958, Mr. Crowe united in marriage to Mary Ruth Estes Crowe who survives.
Other survivors include: his son, Carter Crowe(Cheree), and his daughter, Gina Stacy (Doug), all of Richmond; his brother, Ernest Crowe of Winchester; two sisters: Phoebe Noland of Richmond and Marilyn Miracle of Lexington; three grandchildren, Aundrea Hoffman (David), Matt Stacy (Bitha), and Landry Crowe; five great grandchildren: Dakota Hoffman, Jordan Hoffman, Parker Stacy, Keegan Stacy and Hunter Stacy; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Crowe was also preceded in death by three brothers: Harry Crowe, Herman Crowe and Eugene Crowe; and three sisters: Alice Crowe, Elsa Edwards and Lorraine Allen.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, October 16, 2014 at the Westside Christian Church, 1432 Fairlane Dr., Richmond, with Bro. Matt Vaught and Bro. Mike Simpson officiating. Burial will follow in the Madison County Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 4:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m., Wednesday, October 15th at Combs, Parsons & Collins Funeral Home with Masonic Rites conducted at 8:30 p.m.
Pallbearers will be Mike Stull, Jack Neeley, John Broaddus, Joe Wilson, John Allen Reed and David Noland.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Lodge members of the Waco Masonic Lodge.

Gary Wade Abney, age 56, widower of Paula Garrett Abney, passed away Saturday, October 11, 2014 at Saint Joseph Hospital.
He was born December 7, 1957 in Troy, Michigan to the late Floyd and Elsie Patrick Abney, but lived much of his early life at Little Hardwicks Creek in Estill County.
Survivors include a son, James Abney, Mount Sterling; a daughter, Michelle Thorpe, Stanton; three brothers: Wayne Abney, Stanton; Ray Abney, Frenchburg; and Tony Abney, Stanton; one sister, Janet Townsend, Clay City; and three grandchildren: Courtney & Jacey Thorpe and Jerica Abney.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and three sisters: Charlene Bailey, Barbara Robertson, and Laura Rogers.
Services were held at 4:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 14th at Davis & Davis Funeral Home, 777 West College Avenue, Stanton by Rev. Chad Keathley. Visitation was after 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, at the funeral home. Burial was in West Bend Cemetery with David Kissick, James Garrett, Alex Holbrook, Tony Abney, Al Kiernan, and Steven Randall serving as pallbearers.

Clara Crowe, age 83, of Dug Hill Road in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Friday, October 10, 2014, at the Irvine Nursing & Rehabilitation Center following a long illness.
She was born January 2, 1931 in Estill County and was the daughter of the late George and Nellie Anderson Johnson. She was a homemaker and a member of the Beech Grove Baptist Church. She had lived in Estill County most of her life.
Mrs. Crowe was preceded in death by her husband, Willy Joe “Preacher” Crowe.
She is survived by her son, Ralph Crowe (Sandy), Estill County; one sister, Edna Rucker, Estill County; one brother, Hubert Johnson, Estill County; five grandchildren: Jason & Bradley Hyden; and Shawna, Kelly & Teresa Crowe; four great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Crowe was preceded in death by her daughter, Patricia Harrison.
Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 p.m., Monday, October 13th by Bro. Beverly Arvin at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was at the Joe Miller Cemetery. Friends called between 6 and 9 p.m., Sunday, October 12th at the funeral home.

Leslie Ray McCoy Sr., age 41, of Watson Ridge Road in Ravenna, Kentucky, passed away Friday, October 10, 2014, at his home.
He was born July 19, 1973 in Fayetteville, North Carolina, and was the son of Lillian Ann Hall McCoy and the late Phillip Eugene McCoy. He was a former production supervisor with Hunter Manufacturing and had lived in Estill County most of his life.
He is survived by his mother, Lillian Ann Hall McCoy, Ravenna; his wife, Patricia Lynn Reece McCoy; three daughters: Courtney Rhiannon Burns. Jessiya Taylor Doan, both of Irvine; and Jaden Rae McCoy, Owingsville; one son, Leslie Ray McCoy Jr., at home; four sisters: Kimberly Kay Rogers (Danny), Angela Gaye Johnson (Daniel), bot of Irvine; Donna Jean Jones (James), Sharpsburg; and Dodie Marie Cole (Eldon), Irvine; one brother, Phillip Keith McCoy, Irvine; and several nieces and nephews.

John Wayne Spivey, age 61, passed away Friday, October 10, 2014, at his home after a long illness.
Mr. Spivey was a native of Estill County, a son of the late Luther Spivey and Bessie Reeder.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Luther Hall Jr.; a sister, Bessie Ann Hall.
Survivors include his daughter, April Walker (Phillip); his brother, Albert Hall; his sister, Molly Hamm; three grandsons: Jeremy, Trenton, and Peyton Walker; his special friend, Amy Jenkins; and several nieces and nephews. He also held a special place in his heart for Veldis, Edna, and Randy Spivey.
Services were held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 14th at Lewis Funeral Home with Bro. Mike Miller officiating. Burial followed in the Alcorn Cemetery.

Jennifer Dawn Burns, age 45, of Irvine, Kentucky, passed away on Thursday, October 9, 2014 at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington.
Jennifer was born on July 17, 1969 in Richmond. She was a CMA at Madison Family Clinic and was a member of Knob Lick Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Sybil Thompson Snowden.

Stanley Eugene Robbins, age 81, of Cobb Hill Road in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Thursday, October 9, 2014, at the Marcum & Wallace Memorial Hospital after a long illness.
He was born September 25, 1933 in Fentress County, Tennessee and was the son of the late Asby Stanley and Artha Reagan Robbins. He was a retired vice-president with Red River Hardwoods and had lived in Estill County for the past 25 years. He was a Kentucky Colonel and a member of the Flatwoods Baptist Church Mr. Robbins is survived by his wife of 61 years, Zelma Dean Hall Robbins; one son, Ronald Gary Robbins (Billie), Alma, Arkansas; one sister: Ida Mathney, Dayton, Ohio; one brother, John Robbins (Brenda), Jamestown, Tennessee; one grandchild, Angela Robbins, Elger, Pennsylvania; two great grandchildren and three great, great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, Danny Eugene Robbins; one sister, Novella Cook; and one brother, George Robbins.

Virgil Kevin Johnson, age 50, of Barry Avenue in Bellevue, Kentucky, passed away Wednesday, October 8, 2014, at his home following a long illness.
He was born November 3, 1963 and was the son of Virgil D. Johnson and the late Maxine Stidham Johnson. He was a carpenter and a member of the Bellevue Baptist Church. He was a United States Marine veteran. He had lived in Campbell County most of his life.
Mr. Johnson is survived by his father: Virgil D. Johnson; two daughters: Sarah Jane and Katie, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; one sister, Melissa Perkins, Lakeside Park, Kentucky; one brother, Gerald Lee Johnson, Florence; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Stephen Ray Johnson.

A former construction laborer, he was born April 10, 1974 in Winchester, Kentucky, the son of Chiquitha Mullins Crawford and the late Huston Damon Crawford.
Surviving relatives are his mother, Chiquitha Crawford of Clay City; a daughter, Tori Crawford of Irvine; a sister, Melissa Crawford of Tracy, California; and a niece, Sydney Pippin.

Jennie Witt Farwell, age 90, died at her Burlington, Kentucky, residence on Monday September 27, 2014. She was born August 6, 1924.
A past resident of both Walton and Williamstown, Kentucky, she was an LPN by education and was employed by Booth Memorial Hospital for six years.
As a devoted and loving mother, she is survived by her daughter, Linda Salsbury of Burlington; and two sons, Larry Lee Farwell of Irvine and Thomas Wayne Farwell of Somerset. Jennie was grandmother to seven grandchildren: Emily Salsbury, Amy Fields, Daniel Salsbury, Aimee Brissey, Jennifer Farwell, Lauren Lodholz, and Michael Farwell; and great grandmother of nine.
By Jennie’s final request, services were held in Irvine, Kentucky, officiated by Pastor David Green.

Darelene Parsell, age 58, of Clay City, Kentucky, passed away Saturday, October 4, 2014, at the Markey Cancer Center in Lexington.
She was a housewife and a member of the Jason Riddle Church of God.
Ms. Parsell is survived by one son, Mark Hatton of Clay City; two daughters: Crystal Hatton of Clay City and Lora Hollon of Monticello; two brothers: A. L. Hatton and Arthur Hatton (Ruby), both of Tyler, Michigan; one sister, Ora Ann Hatton of Clay City; and six grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Alison and Doris Hatton.
No services are planned at this time. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Ray Roberts, age 68, of Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Saturday, October 4, 2014 at his home.
He was the son of Roland and Emily Johnson Roberts, born in Owsley County on July 31, 1946. He was a roofer and was of the Holiness Faith. He enjoyed trading and fishing and was known for his ability to work on vehicles and his work as a builder.
On October 26, 1964, Mr. Roberts united in marriage to Kathleen Hall Roberts, who passed away on November 8, 2011 after 47 years of marriage.
Survivors include three sons: Robert Lee Roberts (Linda) of Berea, Michael Ray Roberts and Marty Roberts (Lisa) both of Kingston; three daughters: Sharon Raye Robertson (Chuck), Ruth Centers (fiancé: Chigger), both of Richmond; and Kathy Lynn Jefferson (fiancé: Danny) of Mt. Vernon; two brothers: Clarence Roberts (Liz) and Glenn Roberts; his sister, Rosie Luedtke; nine grandchildren: Christopher Lee Roberts, Erikka Moore (Dean), Charles Robertson (Brittany), James Codey Centers, Brittney Rader (Michael), Felicia Roberts, Kelsey Jefferson, Logan Roberts and Samantha Roberts; and six great grandchildren: Carlie Kathleen Moore, Aubri Rader, Cameron Moore, Hayden Rader, Peyton Robertson and Austin Bolton.

She is survived by her husband, David Richardson; one daughter, Tina Manson (Robert), Winchester; two sons, Christopher Ray Burton (Amanda) and Joseph Daniel Burton, both of Irvine; one sister, Nina Jean Watkins, Irvine; one brother, Omar Wayne Burton, Irvine; three grandchildren and one honorary grandchild.
Teresa was preceded in death by one sister, Jessica Faye Barnett and one brother, Thomas Clay Burton.

Mrs. Hisel was preceded in death by her husband, Ambrose Hisel.
She is survived by three daughters: Lois Crowe, Marjorie Shepherd and Edith Crane, all of Irvine; three grandchildren: Jason Crowe & fiancé, Katie; Jarrod Winkle (Julie) and Terry Winkle & fiancé, Janna; two great grandchildren: Brittany Dannelly and Heaven Lee Winkle; one stepgrandchild, Eli Jones; and several nieces and nephews.

Chrystal Abney Hurst, age 100, widow of James A. Shoemaker and Sam Hurst, passed away Thursday, October 2, 2014.
She was born May 19, 1914 in Estill County to the late George and Mollie Abney.
Survivors include two sons: Edwin Shoemaker (Freida), Richmond; and Velmer Shoemaker, Beaver Creek, Ohio; three grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and nine great, great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, James Addison Shoemaker and Sam Hurst; a daughter and son-in-law, Anna Dale and Stanley Bennett; a daughter in law, Dixie Shoemaker; and a sister, Opal Patrick.

Delbert Embs, Jr., age 72, of Winchester, Kentucky, passed peacefully from this life, Wednesday evening, October 1, 2014, after a long battle with cancer.
He is survived by his wife, Kathy Embs; his daughter, Paige Embs; and his son, Logan Embs; all of Winchester.
Born June 8, 1942 in Bourbon County, he was preceded in death by his father and mother, Delbert Embs Sr. and Lenna (Allen) Embs; a sister, Marjorie Pennock; a brother, Larry Embs; and a special nephew, Jeff Winkle.
He is also survived by two sisters, Betty Winkle of Irvine and Pat Tudor (Robert) of Lexington; three brothers: Doyle Embs (Diane), Lexington; Gary Embs (Linda), Riley, Ohio; and Don Embs, Irvine; and an aunt, Grace Berryman, Winchester. He leaves behind a host of cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Mr. Embs was retired from Osram-Sylvania in Winchester. He loved music and developed many special friendships with those who sang and played music with him. He played in the Generation Center and in area nursing homes.
Services were conducted at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, October 4th at Scobee Funeral Home, 219 West Lexington Avenue, Winchester; by Pastor Chris Williams and Pastor Lee Cruse. Burial was in Log Lick Cemetery.

Dr. William Edward Wise, age 96, of Ravenna, Kentucky, passed away Wednesday, October 1, 2014 after a short illness.
He was born February 3, 1918, the son of the late Wilbur and Matilda Ann Martin Wise.
He was a graduate of Eastern Teachers College and Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine. He was a retired Associate Professor of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Kentucky and also a retired Colonel in the United States Army Reserve. He was a charter member of the Estill County Historical and Genealogical Society, a 60-year Mason and past master, Irvine Lodge 137 F&AM, served for 30 years with the Estill County 4-H Council, and was a member of the River Drive Christian Church.
Dr. Wise is survived by one son; William Edward Wise II and his wife Dixie; three granddaughters: Laura Beth Wise, Victoria Madison Wise, and Olivia Jo Wise; one great grandson, Robert Xavier White.
Dr. Wise was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Walters Wise; two brothers: F. Marshall Wise and Maxie Hubert Wise; one sister, Lillian Russell Wise; one grandson, William Edward Wise III.
Graveside services were held Sunday, October 5th at 2:00 p.m., at the Turpin Cemetery with Bro. Paul Groves officiating.

Paul Timothy “Tim” Spivey, age 41, of Longview, Texas went to be with his Heavenly Father on September 30, 2014.
Tim was born in Lexington, Kentucky on June 9, 1973. He graduated from GRC High School in Winchester, Kentucky and continued his education to receive a Bachelor's of Chemical Engineering from Purdue University. Tim was awarded 31 patents during his accomplished career.
Tim was an avid photographer and enjoyed water sports, movies, co-owning Drover Ranch Longhorn Lean Beef, and travel. He was a dedicated member of Mobberly Baptist Church of Longview, Texas, and had a heart for serving youth, missions, and teaching bible study and Financial Peace University. His great love for the Lord was known by all.
Tim was married to Lindsey Frank Spivey on August 9, 2009, recently celebrating their 5 year anniversary.
Tim is survived by his children, Kendra Spivey, Cody Spivey and Sydney Spivey, and was anxiously awaiting the arrival of his son Sebastian Spivey in March 2015; his wife Lindsey; parents, Paul and Millie Spivey; brother, Curtis Spivey (Sheri); grandparents, RJ and Gertrude Spivey; loving in-laws, aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, cousins and many dear, life-long friends.
He was preceded in death by grandparents Frank Richardson Jr., and Susie Richardson Babb.
Funeral Services were held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 7th at the Combs, Parsons & Collins Funeral Home, 328 West Main Street, Richmond with Rev. Jeff Prosser officiating. Burial followed in the Richmond Cemetery. Visitation was from 6-9 p.m, Monday evening, October 6th at the funeral home.
Pallbearers were Aric Myers, Jeff Moss, Cory Britt, Nicholas Frank, Curtis Spivey and Stephen Spivey.

Michael Lee Aldridge, 51
Michael Lee Aldridge, age 51, of Lexington, Kentucky, brother of Connie Flinchum of Irvine, died Friday, September 12, 2014.
He is survived by his wife, Bessie Aldridge; four sisters: Jewell, Teresa, Deborah Faye, and Connie Sue; three brothers: David, Roy Glenn and Kenneth James; several nieces and nephews; and his two beloved children, Teddy and Sissy.
Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, September 16th at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, 3421 Harrodsburg Road, Lexington, with burial following in Bluegrass Memorial Gardens. Visitation was 5-8 p.m., Monday, September 15th at the funeral home.
