Marching Engineers Are State Runner-Up
First Trip Ever To State
|
Finish 2nd at EKU's Roy Kidd Stadium
The Estill County High School Marching Engineers competed in semifinals competition this weekend in Danville. This is the 10th straight year the band has advanced to state level competition.
Fighting through miserable weather conditions, the band delivered a great performance in spite of the bitter cold and wind. Out of this “sweet sixteen”, only the top four would advance to state finals at EKU. Anyone who has ever been associated with the band in anyway, has always had the dream of making it to state finals. Last year it was just out of the band’s reach as they finished 5th in the state. When the announcement was made, Estill’s name was read in the top four! The dream of becoming a state finalist had just become real.
The band was then off to EKU to perform under the lights in front of a packed stadium as one of the top four class 2A bands in the state. After the hands down best performance of the year, the band was named state finalist runners up and had the 2nd highest overall score.
Out of the 26 total 2A bands across the entire state of Kentucky, the Estill County Marching Engineers finished 2nd! This is yet another milestone for the Estill County band program. Making state finals and having the highest finish ever statewide, is the most notable achievement to date.
“This is by far the most memorable, and most proud moment of my career,” said director Jason Bowles. “These kids are simply amazing! The hard work and dedication that they have put into this has finally paid off. This is the dream of every band student, band parent, and band director....and it finally happened. I personally want to congratulate these students and their parents on such an honorable accomplishment. It means the world to me to see the pride on each of their faces. This recognition is so much deserved. This group has paved the way for an outstanding future and has made a place for Estill County’s name among the elite at the top. It’s a great day to be a Marching Engineer! I will never forget this.”
A RECEPTION to honor this awesome group of students was held on Thursday, November 6th at 7:00 PM in the high school auditorium. Everyone in the community is welcome and encouraged to attend. Please come out to help congratulate and honor this band and their accomplishments!!

There is a movie premiering in November that features St. Louis, called "Four Color Eulogy". It was filmed there as well and will be premiering at the St. Louis Film festival and will then be shown in various film festivals and conventions and hit DVD and digital in the spring. It will feature the music of two Estill County bands, Tony Carroll's band "Manitoba Rock n Rolla" as well as "Ash Wednesday". It also features the music of "All the Little Pieces" out of Lexington. These three bands are the only thing "non-St. Louis" about it. Here are some useful links.

Jess D. Wilson, 96
Jess D. Wilson
|
Jess D. Wilson of Possum Trot, Clay County, Kentucky, a former writer for Jackson Energy's "Rural Kentucky," died Saturday, November 1, 2014.
He was born August 8, 1918, in Clay County, Kentucky, the first of six children of Pleas and Rebecca Pigg Wilson. He attended Foundation School at Berea College, graduated from Tyner High School in 1938, and continued his education at Eastern State Teachers' College (now EKU) in Richmond. During World War II, he worked for the United States Air Force as a master aircraft sheet-metal mechanic.
He started his career at Jackson County Rural Electric Coop by cutting right-of-way, then moved up to wiring inspector, operations engineer and later into public relations. For 32 years, he was responsible for writing the monthly newsletter. His readers were most interested in stories about themselves and their ancestors. "It Happened Here" became something that folks reading The Rural Kentuckian in Estill, Lee, Owsley, Laurel, Rockcastle, Jackson, and Clay counties expected to see. Soon people from other places began to write him about their kinfolks. His books based on these columns received nationwide distribution and two are still in print. A few of his many organizational affiliations include The Council for the Southern Mountains, Kiwanis, Berea College, and the Clay County Genealogical and Historical Society, where his papers now reside. As a spokesman for the Appalachian area, he testified before the US Senate during the 1960's War on Poverty. In 1983, he and his wife, Ruth, retired to a Clay County farm, Possum Trot, which became, with the help and labor of many friends, a loved camp and retreat representing the best of local history and culture.
He leaves his wife of 73 years, Ruth Hygema Wilson; three daughters: E. Gail Chandler, T. Sammie Wakefield, and Rebecca Joy Wilson; two son-in-laws, Curtis Chandler and Richard Wakefield; three granddaughters: Tana Allen, Tara Chandler and Esther Wakefield; two great grandsons; his brother, Raymond Wilson; and a wealth of friends, nieces and nephews; and not to be forgotten, those children of his spirit who know who they are.
The funeral service was held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, November 6, 2014 at Lakes Funeral Home with Bro. Sam Grigsby and Bro. Roger Williams officiating.
Donations may be given to the Clay County Historical and Genealogical Society, Box 394, Manchester, KY.
