33rd Annual Kentucky Book Fair

Frankfort Convention Center
Nearly 200 authors will participate in the 33rd annual Kentucky Book Fair on Nov. 15 at the Frankfort Convention Center, signing and talking about books as diverse as basketball, bourbon, and the Beatles.
The book fair, Kentucky’s premier literary event, is one of the oldest of its kind in the nation. Since its inception in 1981, proceeds from the fair have resulted in more than $375,000 in grants awarded to school and public libraries to expand collections, replace old books or fund literacy-related causes.
“The Frankfort Convention Center is the place to be for all things literary on Nov. 15,” said Carl West, president of the KBF. “There will be under one roof many of the top authors in the nation. Book lovers and authors know there's nothing like it, and that's why it's the place to be.”
The book fair, which includes symposiums and readings, is free and open to the public. The hours are from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.
Chester Zoeller, of Louisville, will sign “Kentucky Bourbon Barons: Legendary Distillers from the Golden Age of Whiskey Making,” which is about the men who made Kentucky the “Bourbon Capital of the World.”
Alan Sullivan and Joe Cox will sign “Voice of the Wildcats: Claude Sullivan and the Rise of Modern Sportscasting,” a biography about the University of Kentucky and Cincinnati Reds broadcaster. Some of the other basketball titles include Gary P. West’s “Better Than Gold: Olympian Kenny Davis and the Most Controversial Basketball Game in History,” Doug Brunk’s “Wildcat Memories: Inside Stories from Kentucky Basketball Greats,” Jeff Bridgeman’s “Kentucky High School Basketball Encyclopedia,” and former Harlem Globetrotter Kevin “Special K” Daley’s “I Never Stopped Smiling,” and his companion workbook, “Never Stop Your Goals.”
Louise Harrison is the author of “My Brother’s Band a.k.a. The Beatles!” She writes about her brother, the late George Harrison, their childhood in Liverpool, England, and the Beatlemania that swept the world in the 1960s.
Other headliners include internationally known food and culture writer Mark Kurlansky, who will sign “International Night,” “Frozen in Time” and “Ready for a Brand New Beat”; Gwyn Hyman Rubio with “Love & Ordinary Creatures,” Teeny Lemothe with “Teeny’s Tour of Pie,” Duffy Brown with “Pearls and Poison,” and Ann B. Ross with “Miss Julia’s Marvelous Makeover.”
Some familiar Kentucky authors are Wendell Berry (“Distant Neighbors: The Selected Letters of Wendell Berry and Gary Snyder”), Bobbie Ann Mason (“The Girl in the Blue Beret”), Elizabeth Bevarly (“My Fair Billionaire”), Steve Demaree (“Murder at the Book Fair”), George Ella Lyon (“Voices from the March on Washington” and “What Forest Knows”), Bill Noel “Final Cut”), Tom Wallace (“The Fires of Heaven”), and Jan Watson “The Buttermilk Sky”).
If you’re into paranormal and the supernatural, among the titles offered will be Madeleine’s Roux’s “Sanctum” and “Asylum,” Thomas Freese’s “Eerie Encounters in Everyday Life: Angels, Aliens, Ghosts and Haunts,” Ben Jeffries’s “Lost in the Darkness: Life Inside the World’s Most Haunted Prisons, Hospitals, and Asylums,” Lisa Piper’s “Secrets of the Asylum,” Lynwood Montell’s “Haunted Houses and Family Ghosts of Kentucky” and James Markert’s “A White Wind Blew.” The authors will also appear at a special presentation, “Haunted Places in Fact and Fiction,” at the Old State Capitol, at 1 p.m.
Among the books about the Civil War are James Prichard’s “Embattled Capital: Frankfort Kentucky in the Civil War”; Maryjean Wall’s “Madam Belle: Sex, Money, and Influence in a Southern Brothel”; Berry Craig’s “Kentucky Confederates”; Betty Boles Ellison’s “The True Mary Todd Lincoln”; and Stuart W. Sanders’s “Maney’s Confederate Brigade at the Battle of Perryville.”
Other titles for the sports-minded reader are Nathaniel Northington’s “Still Running,” Ryan Clark’s “Fightin’ Words: Kentucky vs. Louisville,” and Dale Due’s “You are a Louisville Cardinal” and “You are a Kentucky Wildcat.”
The fair will also feature Kentucky poet laureate Frank X Walker (“Turn Me Loose: The Unghosting of Medgar Evers”) as well as past poet laureates Richard Taylor (“Rain Shadow”) and Joe Survant (“The Land We Dreamed”).
For the fourth consecutive year, there will be a Children’s Day on Friday, from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m., also at the Frankfort Convention Center. More than 40 children’s, middle grade and young adult authors will have presentations and readings the students.
“Purchasing a book at the Kentucky Book Fair is like putting a book in a child’s hands,” said KBF manager Connie Crowe. “The gift of reading is one that we all should cherish.”
The book fair is sponsored by The State Journal, Frankfort’s daily newspaper, and co-sponsored by the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives, the University Press of Kentucky, and Joseph-Beth Booksellers of Lexington. It also receives corporate, institutional, foundation and aid from a variety of citizens and businesses.

Jess D. Wilson, 96

Jess D. Wilson

Jess D. Wilson of Possum Trot, Clay County, Kentucky, a former writer for Jackson Energy's "Rural Kentucky," died Saturday, November 1, 2014.
He was born August 8, 1918, in Clay County, Kentucky, the first of six children of Pleas and Rebecca Pigg Wilson. He attended Foundation School at Berea College, graduated from Tyner High School in 1938, and continued his education at Eastern State Teachers' College (now EKU) in Richmond. During World War II, he worked for the United States Air Force as a master aircraft sheet-metal mechanic.
He started his career at Jackson County Rural Electric Coop by cutting right-of-way, then moved up to wiring inspector, operations engineer and later into public relations. For 32 years, he was responsible for writing the monthly newsletter. His readers were most interested in stories about themselves and their ancestors. "It Happened Here" became something that folks reading The Rural Kentuckian in Estill, Lee, Owsley, Laurel, Rockcastle, Jackson, and Clay counties expected to see. Soon people from other places began to write him about their kinfolks. His books based on these columns received nationwide distribution and two are still in print. A few of his many organizational affiliations include The Council for the Southern Mountains, Kiwanis, Berea College, and the Clay County Genealogical and Historical Society, where his papers now reside. As a spokesman for the Appalachian area, he testified before the US Senate during the 1960's War on Poverty. In 1983, he and his wife, Ruth, retired to a Clay County farm, Possum Trot, which became, with the help and labor of many friends, a loved camp and retreat representing the best of local history and culture.
He leaves his wife of 73 years, Ruth Hygema Wilson; three daughters: E. Gail Chandler, T. Sammie Wakefield, and Rebecca Joy Wilson; two son-in-laws, Curtis Chandler and Richard Wakefield; three granddaughters: Tana Allen, Tara Chandler and Esther Wakefield; two great grandsons; his brother, Raymond Wilson; and a wealth of friends, nieces and nephews; and not to be forgotten, those children of his spirit who know who they are.
The funeral service was held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, November 6, 2014 at Lakes Funeral Home with Bro. Sam Grigsby and Bro. Roger Williams officiating.
Donations may be given to the Clay County Historical and Genealogical Society, Box 394, Manchester, KY.
