Kennedy Flynn moves to 2nd Place In State

Kennedy Flynn, senior guard for the Estill County Lady Engineers, has moved from 4th to 2nd place in statewide scoring with 26.6 points per game average, just ahead of MacI Morris of Bell County (25.7) and Kaylee Cotton of McCreary Central (25.2).
The hard working Estill guard still trails hot-shooting Whitney Creech of Jenkins who averages 41.5 points per game to lead the statewide scoring.
Flynn scored 36 points in a hard-fought trouncing of the Hazard Lady Bulldogs, 62-44, last Saturday at Hazard.
Kennedy improved her average to 27.22 this past week with 33, 32, and 28 against Menifee, Lee and Pendleton counties. Estill scored 59 points in all three games, losing by one to Menifee, winning by 10 over Lee, and losing by 20 on Saturday to Pendleton.

KSP Charges Crab Orchard Man with Kidnapping
(Crab Orchard, KY.) – The Kentucky State Police, Richmond Post, was notified of a possible kidnapping that happened in Lincoln County at approximately 8:00 a.m., Thursday, February 5th.
The initial investigation alleges that James Cash went to a female's residence on KY 643 in Lincoln County and forced his way into her residence. The female claims that she was then assaulted and forced into his vehicle. During the incident, it is alleged that Cash produced a firearm and threatened to kill her. The female was able to exit the vehicle at the Dollar General in Crab Orchard, at which time the police were called. Cash was located and taken into custody by KSP Personnel at his residence on Old Richmond Road, in Crab Orchard.
As a result of the investigation, James E. Cash, 34 years old of Crab Orchard, was arrested at approximately 9:47 a.m. and has been charged with Kidnapping of an Adult and Burglary 1st Degree. He is lodged at the Lincoln County Jail.
The ongoing investigation is being conducted by Tpr. Chris Damron.

Regina Osborne Davis, 56
Regina Osborne Davis, age 56, of Coal Wash Road in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Sunday, February 8, 2015, at Baptist Health in Richmond after a long illness.
She was born January 3, 1959 in Lee County and was the daughter of Oma Sawyer Osborne and the late Ceyphus Osborne. She was a nurse with Marcum & Wallace Memorial Hospital and a member of the Ravenna Nazarene Church. She had lived in Estill County most of her life.
Survivors, in addition to her mother, include her husband: Larry E. Davis; one daughter, Nicole Davis, Estill County; one son, Braden E. Davis (Laura), Estill County; two sisters: Elizabeth Price and Janet Osborne, both of Madison County; three brothers: Raleigh Osborne, Owsley County; Farris Osborne, Madison County; and Michael Osborne, Garrett County; and several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, February 11th at the Ravenna Nazarene Church by Rev. Rob Steinbrook. Burial will be at the Sunset Memorial Gardens. Friends may call between 6 and 9 p.m., Tuesday, February 12th at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home and after 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, at the church.
Pallbearers will be Brent Roper, Dylan Roper, Chris Lunsford, Randy Osborne, John Northern, Cody Osborne and Jake Osborne.

George Lee Flannery, 54
George Lee Flannery, age 54, of Geneva Avenue in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Saturday, February 7, 2015, at the UK Medical Center in Lexington after a short illness.
He was born July 12, 1960, in Estill County, the son of the late George W. and Mary Fox Flannery. He had lived in Estill County all of his life.
Mr. Flannery is survived by five sisters: Judy Flannery, Zada Dennis (Kenneth), both of Irvine; Wanda Miller (Steve), Wyoming; Darlene Watson (Mike) and Donna Fike (Eric), both of Irvine.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Beatrice Chaney; and two brothers, Owen Flannery and Prinice Flannery.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 10th at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Beverly Arvin with burial to follow in the Campbell Cemetery. Friends may call between 6 and 9 p.m., Monday, February 9th at the funeral home.

Hugh E. “Shine” Samples, age 93, of Irvine, Kentucky, born June 15, 1921 in Lee County, Kentucky, son of the late George & Daisy Samples, passed away Tuesday, February 3, 2015.
Mr. Samples served 8 years in the United States Army and was a veteran of World War II and Korea. He was a retired government employee working 22 years at Bluegrass Army Depot and was also a retired merchant. He was a member of Friendship Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Clara Lovins Samples, four sisters, one brother, five nephews, one great nephew, and one great niece.
Mr. Samples is survived by three children: Eugene Samples (Darlene), Jerry Samples (Lena), and Janice Cox (Bruce); three grandchildren: Nancy Michelle Jones, Clara Jean Wiseman and Jerri Dale Samples; six great grandchildren; one very, very special friend, Lotha Allen; two sisters: Juanita Wilson and Evelyn Rawlins; two brothers: Johnny Samples and Howard Samples; and several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 a.m., Friday, February 6th at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Scott Rogers. Burial was at the Sunset Memorial Gardens. Friends called between 6 and 9 p.m., Thursday, February 5th at the funeral Home.

Kathy Lyn (Neff) Watson, age 57, of Phoenix, Arizona, died Friday, January 16, 2015.
Kathy was born in Dayton, Ohio and resided in Miamisburg, Ohio, before moving to Arizona. She raised three daughters, loved animals, was an avid reader, and took delight in simple joys. Her friendly, quirky nature will be greatly missed by her friends and loved ones.
She joins her husband Robert of 39 years, who preceded her in death exactly twelve weeks earlier; and her mother, Phyllis Ramona (Jenkins) Neff.
Survivors include father, Daniel Neff of Miamisburg, Ohio; a brother, Daniel Neff Jr. (Connie) of Miamisburg; and three daughters Mellisa Sawyer (Robert) of Phoenix, Allisha (Julio) Garcia of Glendale, and Lisa Watson of Phoenix. She is also survived by ten grandchildren: Isabella, Jasmine, Bryanna, Trinity, Lila, Alexia, Robert, Marc, Kayla, and Faith; a brother-in-law Ed Watson (Sherri), of Whittman, Arizona; three nieces, four nephews, and a host of extended relatives and great friends.
A celebration of life will be held at Thompson Funeral Chapel in Goodyear, Arizona on Friday, February 6th at 7:00 p.m. with viewing one hour prior. We love you, Mom. Good stories never end.

Margaret Powell Wells, age 89, of Lexington, Kentucky, widow of Harold W. Wells, died Thursday, January 22, 2015. She was born November 12, 1924 in Estill County, the daughter of the late Ancil Matt and Pelina Barnes Powell. She attended Berea College and was a teacher in a one room school house in Estill County during World War II. She was baptized in the Christian faith and loved going to church.
Mrs. Wells is survived by her devoted daughter, Pam Hurt (Don), Lexington; two nephews and their families, Michael Moreland, Orlando, Florida; and Robert Moreland, Cincinnati, Ohio; and a sister, Juanita Moreland (Harold), Cincinnati, Ohio.
Visitation was held from 4 until 7 p.m, Saturday, January 24th at Milward – Southland in Lexington. Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, January 25th at the Lewis Funeral Home in Irvine, with visitation beginning at 12:00 Noon. Burial followed in the Oakdale Cemetery in Ravenna, KY.

Elbert “Burnam” Cox, 97
Elbert “Burnam” Cox, 97, of the Knob Lick community in Estill County, Kentucky, passed away Thursday, January 29, 2015 at his homeplace where he was born.
Mr. Cox was born on October 15, 1917 in Estill County to the late Rollie and Mollie Harris Cox. He served his country as a Combat Medic in the United States Army, and was a life-long farmer. He was a member of the Panola Baptist Church.
Mr. Cox was the widower of Darlene Chrisman Cox who passed away in 1953.
Survivors include: his son, Larry R. Cox (Peggy); two granddaughters: Tina Lynch (James) and Amanda Gibson (Jason); and six great-grandchildren: Ashley Lynch, Makena Cox, Micah Lynch, Taylor Gibson, Logan Gibson and Izzy Gibson.
Mr. Cox was also preceded in death by his three brothers, Dewey, Ralph and Clyde Cox.
Funeral services were conducted at 1:30 p.m., Monday, February 2nd at the Combs, Parsons & Collins Funeral Home, 328 West Main Street, Richmond, with Rev. James Chrisman officiating. Burial will follow in the Richmond Cemetery with full military honors. Visitation was from 3-8 p.m., Sunday, February 1st at the funeral home.
Pallbearers were James Lynch, Jason Gibson, Patrick Tudor, Bruce Chrisman, Russell Rose, Leslie Rose, Dwight Evans and Rodney Rose.

Freda Mae Patrick Gaylord, age 76, of Stanton, Kentucky, widow of Russell Gaylord, passed away Thursday, January 29, 2015 at the Clark Regional Medical Center in Winchester, with her family at her side.
She was born December 18, 1938, in Powell County, the daughter of the late General and Flora Tipton Patrick. She was retired from Sylvania and was a member of the West Bend Church of God where she was a Sunday school teacher for years. Freda loved her church and church family and spent her last full day here on earth at church with the ones she loved so dearly.
Mrs. Gaylord is survived by four daughters: Karen Kirk of Stanton, Connie Reed (Hugh) of Clay City, Vickie Miller (Chris) of Atlanta, Texas; and Kathy Catron (Donald) of Stanton; six grandchildren and three great grandchildren; two brothers: Hubert Patrick of Clay City and Raymond Patrick of Stanton; and six sisters: Irene Tapp of Oklahoma, Patty Patrick of Irvine, Emma Lee Estes of Beattyville, Velma Estes of Beattyville, Charlene Warner of Irvine, and Bobbi Mulford of Stanton.
She was preceded in death by her parents, General and Flora Patrick; her husband, Russell Gaylord; two brothers: Allen Patrick and Elmer Joe Patrick; and one sister, Mary Ethel Warner.
Funeral services were held at 12:00 Noon, Saturday, January 31st at the West Bend Church of God with Bro. Ray Wyatt officiating. Friends may visit Friday, January 30th at the church from 5-9 p.m. Burial was in the Rest Haven Cemetery.

Millard Edward Dixon, age 47, of Sugar Hollow Road in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Tuesday, January 27, 2015, at the Marcum & Wallace Memorial Hospital.
He was born June 28, 1967 in Estill County and was the son of Donna Arvin Dixon. He was a logger and had lived in Estill County all of his life.
Mr. Dixon is survived by his mother, Donna Arvin Dixon; one daughter, Alicia Marie Dixon, Estill County; one son, Johnathon Dixon, Estill County; five grandchildren: Calijah Stone, Chase Stone, Christopher Stone, Kyra Danielle Dixon and Benson Kelley; his fiancé, Crystal Rawlins; and one step-son, Jaxson Rawlins.
He was preceded in death by two brothers: Marvin Ray Dixon and Anthony Kyle Dixon.
Funeral services were conducted at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, January 31st at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Kevin Chaney. Burial was at the South Irvine Cemetery. Friends may call from 11:00 a.m. until service time on Saturday at the funeral home.

J.B. Meadors, 86
J.B. Meadors, 86, of Madison Hills, Richmond, Kentucky, a former employee of Meade’s Do-It-Center in Irvine, passed away Tuesday, January 27, 2015, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Lexington, after a sudden illness.
He was a native of Corbin, born November 28, 1928, the son of the late James and Martha Kidd Meadors. Mr. Meadors was the former owner of Waco Carpet, which he founded in 1984. He also worked at General Electric in Louisville, in addition to Meade's. He was a member of a protestant congregation in Madison County. He was a former member of the Richmond Chamber of Commerce, and enjoyed fishing, and the outdoors.
Mr. Meadors was preceded in death by his siblings: Buford, Cy, and Ethel.
Survivors include his son, Michael Meadows (Denise) of Richmond; his daughters: Nancy Zils (James) of Goshen, Kentucky, and Sherie Gower (Art) of Louisville; his brothers: J.M and Lin Meadors; his sisters: Stella Elias, Hazel Rich, and Bobbi Ferguson; his grandchildren: Matthew, Micah, Jennifer, Justus, and Hope; and his great-grandchild, Vespera.
Services were held at 12:00 Noon, Saturday, January 31st at Heritage Funeral Home, 237 North 2nd Street in Richmond. Friends may call Friday, January 30th, 4-9 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial was in the Calvary Cemetery in Louisville on Monday, February 2nd.
