Kennedy Flynn Scores 3,000th Point Against Harrison County

    The game between Estill and Harrison County was stopped on Monday night to recognize Kennedy Flynn for having scored 3,000 points in her high school career. Kennedy is second in the state in scoring with over 27 points per game including 27 on Monday night, which gave her a total of 3,011 so far. Kennedy scored 1,222 in middle school, playing only in grades 6, 7 and 8. She is the daughter of Gina and Greg Flynn.

    Kennedy Flynn, senior guard for the Estill County Lady Engineers, has dropped to 3rd place in statewide scoring with 27.1 points per game average after being passed by Brianna Burbridge of Frankfort who is averaging 27.8 points after 22 games.
    Hot-shooting Whitney Creech of Jenkins now averages 42.3 points per game to continue to lead the statewide scoring.
    Flynn scored 36 points in a hard-fought trouncing of the Hazard Lady Bulldogs, 62-44, the previous Saturday at Hazard.
    Kennedy improved her average to 27.22 last week with 33, 32, and 28 against Menifee, Lee and Pendleton counties. Estill scored 59 points in all three games, losing by one to Menifee, winning by 10 over Lee, and losing by 20 on Saturday to Pendleton. She scored 27 on Monday in an overtime loss to Harrison County.

Winter Weather Safety Tips

     After the harsh start to this week the future forecast doesn’t look any better. Extremely cold temperatures will enter the area with temperatures below zero and wind chills as cold as 25 below zero. Temps this cold are very dangerous to people, pets and livestock; take time to prepare now. Make sure pipes are well insulated to prevent freezing. Also take the time and prepare a Disaster Supply Kit, you never know when you might need it.
    Everyone is potentially at risk during winter storms. Most fatalities are indirectly related to the storm. People die from traffic accidents on icy roads, heart attacks while shoveling snow, and hypothermia from prolonged exposure to cold.
    Be prepared for winter weather! Listen to NOAA weather radio or commercial radio/television to stay informed about winter storm watches, warnings and advisories.

At home and work, plan ahead for winter storms by having these in hand:

    ●  Flashlight and extra batteries
    ●  Battery-powered NOAA weather Radio
    ●  Extra food and water - high energy food such as dried fruit, nuts and granola bars, and food requiring no cooking or refrigeration
    ●  Can opener
    ●  Extra medicine and baby supplies
    ●  First aid kit
    ●  Heating fuel
    ●  Emergency heat source
    ●  Fire extinguisher
    ●  Smoke alarm
    ●  Make sure pets have plenty of food, water, and shelter

If you are already indoors during hazardous winter weather:

    ●  Stay inside!
    ●  When using alternate heat from a fireplace, wood stove, space heater, etc., use fire safeguards and properly ventilate
    ●  Close off unneeded rooms
    ●  Stuff towels or rags in cracks under doors
    ●  Cover windows at night
    ●  Eat and drink - food provides the body with energy for producing its own heat
    ●  Wear layers of loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing

The best advice for traveling during forecasted winter conditions is; “simply stay at home”. Only travel if necessary. However, if you must:

Before starting out in a vehicle:

    ●  Plan your travel
    ●  Check the weather
    ●  Have road condition phone numbers handy
    ●  Carry a Winter Storm Survival Kit
    ●  Keep the gas tank near full to avoid ice in the tank and fuel lines
    ●  Avoid traveling alone
    ●  Let someone know your timetable and route

If you are stranded in your vehicle during hazardous winter weather:

    ●  Stay with your vehicle
    ●  Take turns sleeping
    ●  Run the motor every hour for 10 minutes to keep warm
    ●  Keep windows open a little to prevent carbon monoxide buildup
    ●  Make sure the exhaust pipe is not blocked
    ●  Tie a bright cloth to the antenna
    ●  Exercise periodically by vigorously moving your arms, legs, toes and fingers
    ●  Turn on the dome light while the engine is running to aid rescuers at night
    ●  After the snow stops falling, raise the car hood to indicate you need help

A good automobile Winter Safety Kit includes: cell phone and charger, blankets, flashlight and extra batteries, first-aid kit, knife, high-calorie non-perishable food, bottled water, extra clothing to keep dry, large empty can to use as emergency toilet, tissues and paper towels, small can and waterproof matches to melt snow for drinking water, sack of sand or cat litter for traction, shovel, windshield scraper and brush, tool kit, tow rope, battery booster cables, water container, compass and road maps. Dress for the storm if you must be outdoors during severe winter weather:

    ●  Wear loose, lightweight, warm clothes in layers
    ●  Remove layers to avoid perspiration and subsequent chill
    ●  Outer garments should be tightly woven, water repellent, and hooded.
    ●  Wear a hat --half your body heat loss can be from the head.
    ●  Cover your mouth to protect your lungs from extreme cold.
    ●  Mittens, snug at the wrist, are better than gloves.
    ●  Try to stay dry

If you are caught outdoors during hazardous winter weather:

    ●  DO NOT PANIC
    ●  Find shelter
    ●  Try to stay dry
    ●  Cover all exposed body parts
    ●  Build shelter: a lean-to, windbreak or snow cave for protection from the wind
    ●  Build a fire for heat and to attract attention
    ●  Place rocks around fire to absorb and reflect heat
    ●  Melt snow for drinking water -- eating snow will lower your body temperature
    ●  Avoid overexertion - especially when shoveling or freeing stuck vehicles

Barbara Sue Hawkins, 66

    Barbara Sue Hawkins, age 66, wife of Steve Hawkins, passed away Thursday, February 19, 2015 at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington after a long illness.
    Mrs. Hawkins was a native of Estill County, born October 6, 1948, a daughter of the late Taylor and Callie Baber Powell. She was a retired van driver for BMT and Kentucky River Foothills.
    She was a member of the White Oak Church of God, a member of the Estill County Dulcimer Club, the American Legion Post 76 Women’s Auxiliary, the Estill County Golf Club, and the Silver Sneakers Get Fit Health Club.
    She was preceded in death by her brothers: Bill Powell, and Breck Powell; and her sister, Ruth Powell. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.
    Survivors, other than Steve, her husband of 27 years; include her children: James Edmondson (and girlfriend Maliea Arvin); her daughter, Angelia Sherlin (William); her brother, Eugene “Jip” Powell; her sister, Louise Henry (Richard); her grandchildren: Kristyn Bush, Devan Bush, Ashlee Edmonson, Morgan Sherlin, Haley Sherlin, and Taylan Arvin; her great-grandchild, Gracie Roth; several nieces and nephews; and her canine companion, Benji.
    Services were held Wednesday, February 25, 2015, at 1:00 p.m. at the White Oak Church of God, with Bro. Glendon Woosley officiating. Friends called from 11 a.m .until service time at the church.
    Burial followed in the Sonny Powell Cemetery. Friends also called anytime after 6:00 p.m., February 24 at Lewis Funeral home.

Kenneth Wayne Bingham, 65

    Kenneth Wayne Bingham, age 65, passed away Wednesday morning, February 18, 2015.
    Kenneth was born June 4, 1949 in Wagersville, Kentucky, to the late Ellis and Marie Miller Bingham. He enjoyed working in his garden, caring for his dogs and going on fishing trips with his family. Listening to country music was one of his favorite pastimes.
    He is survived by four brothers: Harold Bingham (Brenda), Everett Bingham (Eula), Cecil Bingham (Carolyn), and Ronnie Bingham; and four sisters: Ruth Lawson (Herb), Lois Meyer (Steve), Grace Carol Stotts, and Martha Walter.
    Mr. Bingham was preceded in death by two of his sisters: Willy Joe King and Sue Schulte.
    Funeral services were at 1:00 p.m., Monday, February 23rd at the Combs Parsons, & Collins Funeral Home with Bro. Jerry Browning officiating. Burial followed in Madison County Memorial Gardens. Visitation was held Monday, February 23rd, beginning at 12:00 Noon, until time of service.

Rebecca Earnestine Tipton Chaney, 71

    Rebecca Earnestine Tipton Chaney, age 71, of Wallace Court in Irvine, passed away February 18, 2015, at Central Baptist Hospital following a short illness.
    She was born February 24, 1943 in Estill County and was the daughter of the late Theodore R. Tipton and Helen Rogers Tipton. She was a retired seamstress with Carhartts and Powell Manufacturing. She was a member of the Irvine United Methodist Church.
    Mrs. Chaney was preceded in death by two sisters, Earlene Tipton and Margaret Tipton Vincent.
    Survivors include her daughter, Rhonda Chaney Scott and her children, Joshua, Jacob and Emily, all of Winchester; her son, Raymond Chaney of Irvine; her daughter, Robin Chaney Farmer and children, Samantha, Matthew and Christopher, all of Stanton; her sister, Faye Tipton of Irvine; her brother, James Tipton of Winchester; and her brother, Wendell Tipton and wife Connie of McKee. She is also survived by several wonderful nieces, nephews and their children.
    Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, February 22nd at Lewis Funeral Home in Irvine, with Reverend Jerry Rose officiating. Burial followed at Oakdale Cemetery in Irvine. Friends called Saturday, February 21, 2015 between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Larry Kenneth Feagins, 69

    Larry Kenneth Feagins, age 69, of Richmond Green Drive in Richmond passed away Tuesday, February 17, 2015, at his home following a long illness.
    He was born March 12, 1945 in Kingsport, Tennessee and was the son of Mary Frances Ragle Feagins and the late John Wallace Feagins. He was a retired Southern States employee and was a member of the Drip Rock Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon.
    Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife, Lillie Francis Cox Feagins; two daughters: Pamela Isaacs (Steve), Irvine; and Tina Marshall (Mark), Tennessee; one sister, Trudy Leake (Warner), Tennessee; one brother, Thomas Feagins, Tennessee; three grandchildren: Alisha Lester (Tony), Michalia Marshall, and Steven Isaacs; two great grandchildren: Kenneth and Kaleb Lester; and a host of loving nieces and loving nephews and several loving sisters- and brothers-in-law.
    He was preceded in death by one brother, Charles Feagins.

Kenneth Shuler, 77

    Kenneth Shuler, 77, of Taylorsville, Kentucky, died Sunday, the 15th day of February, 2015, at the University of Louisville Hospital in Louisville.
    A native of Estill County, he was the son of the late Elery and Lueann Tipton Shuler. He was a member of the Plum Creek Baptist Church of Waterford, where he assisted David Hahn with the Northern Lights Program and nursing home ministry. A retired employee of the Kentucky Association of Electric Cooperatives, he ultimately retired as a supervisor after forty-two years of service.
    His survivors include his sons: Kenneth DeWayne Shuler and his wife, Rosa, of Mount Sterling; William Keith Shuler and his wife, Karen, of Louisville: Anthony Purcell Shuler and his wife, Rachelle, of Taylorsville: and Christopher Brian Shuler and his wife, Christine, of Louisville; his brother: James P. Shuler of Ravenna; sister, Celia Robb of Canton, Ohio; his nine grandchildren: Ethan Shuler, Shannon O’Daniel, Cassie O’Daniel, Brittany Rice, Elizabeth Shuler, Amber Phillips, Caylee Shuler, Lisa Sweeney, and Tiffany Phillips; and his twelve great-grandchildren, Abigail Beauerle, William Beauerle, Claire Beauerle, James Rice, Caden O’Daniel, Landon O’Daniel, Nevaeh Phillips, Jordan Janssen, McKenzie Janssen, Hailey Janssen, Desiree Sweeney, and Trenton Sweeney.

    Bessie Crowe Wilson, age 95, widow of Robert M. Wilson, died Sunday, February 15, 2015 at her residence.
    Born Oct. 6, 1919 in Estill County, Kentucky, she was the daughter of the late William M. Crowe and Nellie Carroll Crowe. Mrs. Wilson was retired from General Electric and was a member of Broadway Baptist Church.
    Survivors include a sister-in-law, Francis Crowe; and several nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews.
    She was preceded in death by five brothers and five sisters.

Janice Karen Muncie Ballard, 72

    Janice Karen Muncie Ballard, age 72, of North Stacy Lane in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Sunday, February 15, 2015 at the Compassionate Care Center in Richmond, following a short illness.
    She was born October 29, 1942, in Estill County, the daughter of the late Victor P. and Della May Isaacs Muncie. She was retired from Carhartt and had lived in Estill County all of her life. She was a Charter Member of the Ravenna Church of the Nazarene and a member of the Estill County Homemakers Association.
    Mrs. Ballard is survived by her husband, Arthur Gene Ballard; two sons: Arthur David Ballard (Shonna) and Randall A. Ballard, both of Estill County; one sister, Crystal Tingle (Theo), Florida; a sister in law, Harriet Muncie, Richmond; and three grandchildren: Whitney, Machaela, and Mariah Ballard.
    She was preceded in death by a brother, Victor Wayne Muncie.

Lorene Frazier, 86

    Lorene Frazier, age 86, widow of Richard "Ed" Frazier, passed away Friday, February 13, 2015 at her home after an illness.
    She was a native of Grayson County, Kentucky, born September 13, 1928, a daughter of the late Hobert and Dora Franks Embry. Mrs. Frazier was a retired employee of Carhartt, and a homemaker for seven children. She enjoyed quilting, and sewing.
    Mrs. Frazier was preceded in death by her husband, Ed Frazier; three sisters and a brother.
    Survivors include her daughters: Mary Jo Dennis (Shelby) of Madison County, Wanda Frazier, Donna Parsons (Jerry), Karen Shouse (Bobby), Kae Ellen Tipton (Raymond), all of Irvine; her sons: Richard D. Frazier (Shirley), and Ronald Frazier (Peggy), both of Irvine; her sister, Nadine Daughtery of Louisville; her brother, Kenny Embry (Faye) of Irvine; 12 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; and one great, great grandchild.

Thomas F. Martin, 90

    Thomas F. Martin, 90 of Little Rock Road in Estill County, Kentucky, passed away Thursday morning, February 12, 2015 at Baptist Health in Richmond.
    Mr. Martin was born on July 4, 1924 in Birmingham, Michigan, the son of the late Robert T. and Helen Shaver Martin. He was a retired salesman and was the widower of Sally Schumacher Martin. He was of the Presbyterian Faith.
    Survivors include three children: Barbara Martin Chrisman (Dick) of Estill County, Susan Martin of Jeffersonville, Indiana, and Robert Martin of Phoenix, Arizona; two sisters: Betty Martin Cudworth and Mary Martin Zur-Burg, four grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
    In addition to his wife and parents; he was preceded in death by a brother, Jackie Martin.
    A memorial service will be held at a later date in Lima, Ohio.

Willard Jackson Skinner, 73

    Willard Jackson Skinner, better known as "Wickie" was born September 5, 1941 in Jackson County, Kentucky, and departed this life Thursday, February 12, 2015 at the Compassionate Care Center in Richmond, being 73 years of age.
    He was the son of the late Jackson & Ida Mae Turner Skinner.
    Willard is survived by his wife, Lucille Skinner of McKee; three sons: William Skinner, Dale Skinner (Jennifer), both of McKee; and Charles Skinner (Gracie) of Irvine; a sister, Carolyn Collins (Gary) of Frankfort; and by three brothers: Wade Skinner (Barbara), Olin Skinner, both of Lexington; and Tommy Skinner of Irvine. He was blessed with two grandchildren, Kadara Skinner and John Luke Skinner.
    In addition to his parents, Willard was also preceded in death by a sister, Freda Rogers.
    The funeral service was held at 1:00 p.m., Sunday, February 15th at Lakes Funeral Home, 1181 Main Street South in McKee, with Bro. Jerry Rose officiating. Burial followed in the Lainhart Cemetery.

Bobby Wayne Hardy, 55

    Bobby Wayne Hardy, age 55, of Scott Court in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Wednesday, February 11, 2015, at the Irvine Nursing and Rehab Center, following a long illness.
    He was born December 9, 1959 in Fayette County, the son of Glendon Hardy and the late Darlene Norton Hardy. He was a self-employed carpenter and had lived in Estill County all of his life.
    In addition to his father, he is also survived by one daughter, Sarah Hardy, Berea; four sisters: Kathy Turner, Madison County; Jennifer Tipton, Estill County; Rebecca Dixon and Robin Turpin, both of Estill County; one brother, Greg Hardy, Estill County; and one grandchild: Bentley Bryant.

Francis Marion "Ez" Ashcraft, 90

    Francis Marion "Ez" Ashcraft, age 90, passed away peacefully, Tuesday February 10, 2015 at home in Saint Charles, Missouri, in the presence of his wife and four daughters.
    He was born May 27, 1924 in Irvine, Kentucky, dear son of Ezart Francis Ashcraft, a prominent local attorney, and Cloria Mae Brandenburg Ashcraft. His seventh great-grandfather, Capt. John Ashcraft, came from England to Virginia in 1635.
    Mr. Ashcraft graduated from Irvine High School in 1941. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on December 6, 1941, and became the first Marine from Estill County. After initial training he was assigned to an artillery unit in the First Marine Division. Private Ashcraft fought for his country in the Battle of Guadalcanal, being in the first offensive and going ashore in the first wave. His unit received their first artillery piece on the beach there and learned to fire it during actual combat. On Guadalcanal he contracted both malaria and dengue fever, common afflictions in that dreadful jungle which claimed many of his fellow Marines. After a lengthy convalescence he returned to duty and was serving in China at war's end.
    As a part of the "Greatest Generation," Mr. Ashcraft returned home to Kentucky and helped build our country. He married the prettiest girl in Estill County, Delores June Huddleston, and together they raised four daughters. He went to work in the late 1940s as a Civil Servant in the United States Army as a munitions specialist. The Army loaned him to the United States Air Force and he served with them for the remainder of his career. That career took he and his family from Kentucky to California, France, Utah and Illinois. He developed and wrote the Air Force doctrine for the storage and transportation of weapons and hazardous material including nuclear weapons.
    Upon retirement in 1979 he and Delores settled in Palm Harbor, Florida and established themselves as active members in their community. In 2003 they moved to Saint Charles, Missouri to be closer to family.
    Mr. Ashcraft is survived by Delores, his beloved wife of sixty six years, and four daughters; Deborah Clarkson of Valencia, California; Teresa Vernon of Maryland Heights, Missouri; Frances Richardson of Memphis, Tennessee; and Karen Hoffmann of Aurora, Illinois. He is also survived by his brother, attorney Earl Franklin Ashcraft, a former judge in Estill County; as well as his sister, Beverly Jean Thompson, a former mayor of Ravenna, KY. He has six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
    He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, VFW.
    Interment was at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.
