KSP Investigates Fatal Collision in Estill County
The Kentucky State Police, Richmond Post, is investigating a single vehicle fatal collision that happened just after 6:00 p.m., Saturday night, May 9, 2015, on Millers Creek Road in Estill County.
The initial investigation has revealed that a 1998 Dodge truck, operated by Chester Harrison, 54 years old of Irvine, was traveling west on Millers Creek toward Irvine. The vehicle, traveled off the left side of the roadway and overturned. Harrison was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Estill County Coroner.
The investigation indicates that Harrison was not wearing a seatbelt and alcohol may be a factor in the collision.
The ongoing investigation is being conducted by Trooper Jason Carpenter. He was assisted at the scene by KSP Personnel, Estill County Sheriff’s Office, Estill County EMS, Estill County Fire & Rescue, and the Estill County Coroner.

Josephine Richardson Ramsey, 79
Josephine Richardson Ramsey, age 79, of North Minor Lane in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Saturday, May 9, 2015, at the Compassionate Care Center in Richmond, following a short illness.
She was born May 25, 1935 in Jackson County and was the daughter of the late Hershel and Ola B. Cox Richardson. She was a homemaker and a member of the True Vine Ministry. She had lived in Estill County most of her life.
Mrs. Ramsey is survived by her husband, Cecil Ramsey; two daughters: Eva Gross (Randal), Estill County; and Bonnie Ellington (Terry) Madison County; two sisters: Eva Abney, Estill County; and Eunice Woolery, Mississippi; one brother, Glen Richardson, Estill County; six grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by four brothers: Charles, Norman, Melvin and Ray Richardson.
Funeral services were conducted at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 12th at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Terry Barnes. Burial was at the South Irvine Cemetery. Friends called between 6 and 9 p.m., Monday, May 11th at the funeral home.
Pallbearers were Robert Gross, Cecil Greenwood, Joseph Greenwood, Thomas Wilkerson, Cloyd Richardson, Chris McDaniel, Clifton Estes and Wayne Richardson.

Nicholas Ray Witt, age 36, of Manna Drive in Richmond, Kentucky, passed away Saturday, May 9, 2015, at the Baptist Health, Lexington.
He was born June 5, 1978 in Madison County and was the son of Roger Ray and Jackie Lynn Barnes Witt. He was an employee of Bluegrass Plating.
Survivors include his parents, Roger Ray and Jackie Lynn Barnes Witt; one daughter, Nikki Morgan Witt; one son, Brody Ray Witt; one brother, Brian Michael Witt; one nephew, Lincoln Oliver Witt; and his girlfriend, Stephanie Thompson, all of Madison County.

Laura Cox Clough, age 91, passed away Friday, May 8, 2015 at her home.
She was born February 10, 1924, in Estill County to the late Hobert Cox and Mae Boian Cox. She attended Forrest Grove Christian Church, retired from Sylvania, and was a loving homemaker.
Survivors include one niece, Linda Cooper (Marvin); two nephews: Bill Worrell (Diane) and Doug Thomas (JoAnn); four grandchildren: Michelle Rasmussen, Melissa Spera, Crystal Wohlfahrt, and Michael Carr Clough; and numerous nephews, nieces, and great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons: Larry Joe Clough and Michael "Mickey" Carr Clough; one niece, Brenda Schanding; and one nephew, Terry Thomas.
Funeral services were conducted by Bill Worrell at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 12 at Scobee Funeral Home, 219 West Main Street in Winchester. Burial was in the Winchester Cemetery. Visitation was from 1:00 p.m. until service time, Tuesday, at the fruneral home.

Brenda Kay Worrell Schanding, age 68, of Paris, Kentucky, passed away Friday, May 8, 2015, at Clark Regional Medical Center in Winchester.
She is survived by her husband of 48 years, James T. Schanding.
Mrs. Schanding was born on August 24, 1946, to the late Allen and Nona Worrell of Irvine. Brenda, a member of Crossroads Christian Church, was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and sister. She was retired from the Bluegrass Army Depot.
She is also survived by two sons: James Gregory Schanding (Lora) of Paris and Brent Schanding (Angela) of Winchester; five grandchildren: Benjamin, Abigail, Levi, Tirzah, and Naomi; one brother: Bill Worrell (Dianne) of Knightstown, Indiana; one sister: Linda Cooper (Marvin) of Irvine; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services were conducted at 2:00 p.m., Monday, May 11th by Rev. Forrest Hahn at Scobee Funeral Home, 219 West Lexington Avenue in Winchester. Burial was in the Winchester Cemetery. Visitation was held from 12:00 Noon until service time at 2:00 p.m., Monday, at the funeral home

Wanda Faye Isaacs Willis, age 69, of Winchester Road in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Thursday, May 7, 2015, at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington, following a long illness.
She was born March 15, 1946 in Estill County and was the daughter of the late Elbert and Letha Mae Rose Isaacs. She was a homemaker and a member of the Baptist faith. She was born and raised at Red Lick and resided in her later years in Estill County, mostly at Wisemantown.
Ms. Willis was the ex-widow of the late Dewey Deffort Willis and long-time partner and love of the late Daniel “George” Jones.
She is survived by her son: Marvin Shawn Willis, Waco; two sisters: Alma Willis and Beatrice Eileen King, both of Estill County; five grandchildren: Christy Michelle Willis, Ashley Nicole Willis, Miranda Willis, Michael Shawn Willis and Brian Keith Best; four great grandchildren, and one special honorary beloved friend, Anna Lois Embs
Ms. Willis was preceded in death by two children, Regina Marilee Willis and Kevin Timothy Willis; one sister, Wilma Lee Isaacs; and three brothers: Eugene, Omie and Charles Graydon Isaacs.

Stanley Tracy Jenkins, age 73, of Red Lick Road in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Wednesday, May 6, 2015, at the Compassionate Care Center in Richmond, following a short illness.
He was born March 26, 1942 in Estill County and was the son of the late Stanley and Ruth Bingham Jenkins. He was a retired employee of the Estill County School System and was a member of the O.D. Henderson Masonic Lodge. He had lived in Estill County all of his life.
Mr. Jenkins was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Piccola “Colie” Jenkins.
He is survived by one son: David Jenkins (Paula), Irvine; two step-children: Monica Faye Jump, Lexington; and Roy Wayne Ashcraft (Janetta), Waco; two sisters: Viola Babb and Elizabeth Willis, both of Irvine; one brother, Robert Jenkins, Nicholasville; and three grandchildren: Brian Ashcraft, Zack Newman and Trevor Jenkins.
Mr. Jenkins was preceded in death by one sister, Pearl Johnson; and three brothers: Raymond, James and Douglas Jenkins.

Levi Shane Palmer, infant son of Robert Palmer Jr. and Miranda Palmer, was stillborn on Wednesday, April 29, 2015, at 4:15 a.m. at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington, Kentucky. He was 1 pound, 7 ounces, and 12 ½ inches long.
Though he never spent any time with us here on Earth, our lives have been forever changed by him.
He is survived by his parents, Rob and Miranda Palmer; a sister, Jordan Palmer; a brother Aiden Keeney; his grandfather, Bob Palmer; and grandparents Mike & Sue McQueen and Angie and Gerald Flynn.
Shane is preceded in death by grandmother, Sharon Palmer.

Jeffrey Lynn White, 66, Senior Minister at The Welcome Table Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Arlington, Texas; passed away Wednesday May 6, 2015 after a short illness. Before moving to Fort Worth, he served churches in Kentucky, Georgia, Tennessee and North Carolina, and was a longtime member and former Chairman of the Board of the Network of Biblical Storytellers.
Born December 13, 1948, he graduated from Transylvania University and earned a Doctor of Ministry degree from Lexington Theological Seminary.
Although he was always dedicated to his ministry, his highest priority and greatest source of fulfillment was his family: his wife of 38 years, Sylvia; his children, Jeff White (Shawna) of Memphis Tennessee; Paula White of New York City, and Tessa White of Fort Worth; his brother, David White (Sarah) of Hermitage Tennessee; his sister, Carol Silvey (Carl) of Nicholasville; and many beloved extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bob L. and Jane A. White.
A memorial service was held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, May 9th at Northwest Christian Church, 1001 N. Davis Arlington, TX 76012, following visitation with the family at 10:00 a.m.

Col. John Rex Embry, age 66, passed away Tuesday, May 5, 2015. John was born Thursday, November 18, 1948, and was a graduate of the University of Kentucky, UK School of Dentistry, and the University of Florida. He operated a private dental practice in Irvine for seven years. He served in the military for over 30 years. His military career included serving in the U.S. Navy, Indian Health Service, Army National Guard in Kentucky and Florida and he retired from the U.S. Air Force.
John was a devoted husband, father, brother and loyal friend. He loved challenges and was very adventurous. He hunted in Montana, flew planes in Louisiana, became a certified diver in Florida, skied in Germany, golfed in Japan, and boated in Mississippi. He loved music and played the guitar and was in the process of learning to play the banjo and mandolin. He valued and cherished friendships acquired throughout his life from childhood in Newport, KY to his retirement in Ocean Springs, MS (especially OSYC) ending in Lexington, KY.
John is survived by his loving wife, Dianne Winkler Embry, Lexington, sons: John Seth Embry, New York; and Benjamin Cole Embry, Florida; sisters: Carol Marksberry (Henry), and Yvonne Mittendorf; nephew, Michael Marksberry (Tara), nieces, Lesa Lipson (David), and Kim Hensley (David); sisters-in-law: Wanda Joy Martin (John), and Cynthia Clark; mother and father-in-law, Kenneth and Helena Winkler; and he is further survived by several great nieces and great nephews.
John was preceded in death by his mother, Lois Embry; father, Woodrow Embry; and brother-in-law, Bill Mittendorf.
Visitation was held on Friday, May 8th from 6-9 p.m. at Milward-Man O’ War, 1509 Trent Blvd in Lexington. The funeral service was held Saturday, May 9th at 1 p.m., also at Milward-Man O’ War with Dr. Terry Freeman officiating. Burial was on Monday, May 11th at 2:30 p.m. at Camp Nelson National Cemetery, Nicholasville.

Danny F. Powell, age 68, of Dark Hollow Road in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Tuesday, May 5, 2015, at the Irvine Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
He was born November 21, 1946 in Estill County and was the son of the late Bluford and Birdie Tipton Powell. He was an auto mechanic and had lived in Estill County most of his life.
Mr. Powell is survived by four daughters: Debbie Wright (Darrell), Carrolton; Jackie Woosley, Irvine; Vicki Horn (Jeff), Ravenna; and Cathy Dawes (Bryan), Irvine; one son, Dino Powell, Irvine; eight grandchildren and one great grandchild.
He was preceded in death by four sisters and one brother.

Mary Jo Combs, age 61, wife of Joby Combs, passed away Monday, May 4, 2015, at her home, after a long illness.
Mrs. Combs was a native of Hamilton Ohio, born October 1, 1953, a daughter of the late Boyd and Edith Geneva Young Plowman. She was a Paraeducator for the Estill County Board of Education. She was member and former president of the American Legion Post #79 Ladies Auxiliary.
Survivors, other than her husband of 14 years, Joby Combs, include her children: Derrick Ryan Napier and Deidre Reeves; her brothers: Ray Snowden, Tracy Snowden, Leonard Snowden and Jackie Plowman; her sisters: Sandy McIntosh and Lisa Plowman; and her grandchildren: Dylan Abney and Elijah Napier.

Obert G. "Boodle" Curtis of Winchester, Kentucky, departed this life on Sunday, May 3, 2015 at Sayre Christian Village's Alzheimer's Unit.
Obert was born June 12, 1931 at Clay City, the son of the late Raymond and Pearl Barnett Curtis (both deceased). He was brother to Jessie Curtis Minnish, Phyllis Curtis Rose (deceased), Jackie Allen Curtis (deceased) and Ambrose R. Curtis (deceased). He leaves a brother-in-law, Foster Rose; and two sister-in-laws, Barbara Curtis and Wanda Curtis.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Betty L. Curtis. He was father to four children, Dr. Sherry L. Curtis, Connie C. Templeton (Bruce), Georgia C. Ling (Phil) and David Glynn Curtis; grandfather to Curtis E. Templeton (Kristi), Nikita Jo Curtis, Philip H. Ling III (Lauren) and Nicholas Glynn Curtis; and great grandfather to Haley Beth and Lexi Mae Templeton and Dessa Pearl and Wesley B. Foster.
Obert served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was privileged to serve as an elder at both Stanton Christian Church and Christview Christian Church. Obert served on the boards of Sayre Christian Village and Teen Mission USA. He was a former member of the Powell County Lions Club, the Powell County Farm Bureau, the Powell County Flying Club and the Winchester Gideons. Obert was also a former mayor of Stanton. He along with his father and brothers owned and operated B & C Wholesale in Ravenna for nearly 40 years.
Visitation was held at Hearne Funeral Home in Stanton, from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 5. Funeral services were held at Christview Christian Church in Winchester at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 6, with visitation an hour before the funeral. Interment with military honors was in Clarmont Memorial Gardens with Bill Castle, Doug Christopher, LeRoy Williams, Jim Roarx, Ron Shaffer and Mike Castle serving as active pallbearers.
Honorary pallbearers were Christview Christian Church Deacons, Powell County High School Class of '48 and Powell County Farm Bureau Board of Directors.

Geraldine McKinney Wolfinbarger, age 82, widow of Roscoe Wolfinbarger, died Sunday, May 3, 2015 at her residence.
She was a homemaker, and a retired realtor. She was a native of Lee County, Kentucky, born February 24, 1933, a daughter of the late Buel and Nannie Lynch McKinney.
Mrs. Wolfinbarger was preceded in death by her brothers Dewey McKinney, B.P McKinney and Jesse Hopper; and her sister, Lillie Hopper.
Survivors include her son Darrell Wolfinbarger (Joy); her granddaughter, Selena Neal (Anthony); her granddaughters: Stevi and Halee Neal; her brothers: James, Raymond, Ronnie, Buel Jr., and John McKinney; and several nieces and nephews.

She was born June 15, 1923, in Estill County, the daughter of the late Chester and Lizzie Mansfield Marcum. She was a homemaker and had lived in Madison County most of her life. She was a member of the Lyndon Street Baptist Church.
Mrs. Reece was preceded in death by her husband, John W. Reece.
She is survived by five daughters: Elizabeth Davis; Gladys Hoover (William), Louise Hyatt, Thelma Hoover (James) and Susie Tuggle; three sons: William Reece (Madelene), Tracie Reece (Mary), and Paul Reece (Clair); one sister, Dessie Burton; 30 grandchildren, 52 great grandchildren, 27 great, great grandchildren, and one great, great, great grandchild.
In addition to her husband, she is preceded in death by one son, Loda James Reece; two sisters and three brothers.

She was born May 3, 1915 in Estill County to the late Ernest and Callie Francis Marcum Johnson.

She was a native of Clark County, born July 11, 1959, a daughter of the late Jim and Mary Lee Kash Haden. Ms. Haden was a hairdresser and a member of the 1st Baptist Church of Crescent City, Florida. She enjoyed movies, reading, the outdoors, swimming, and the beach.
Survivors include her children: Taylor Townsend and Tara Farley; her sister: K. Ann Barnes (Jimmy); her grandchildren: Rachel Farley, Jesse Farley, and Addie Adkins; her nephew, Haden Barnes; and several cousins.

Martin Russell McCoy, age 80, husband of Bertha Faye McCoy, passed away Tuesday, April 28, 2015, at his home.
He was born September 19, 1934 to the late Troy Cebert and Maryetta Halsey McCoy. He was a Marine Corps veteran, serving from 1953-1962. Martin was a retired construction worker.
Survivors include his wife, Bertha Faye Spencer McCoy, Stanton; sons, Martin Russell McCoy Jr. (Sheila), West Bend, and Darrell McCoy (Tina), Stanton; one daughter, Belinda Barnett (Danny), Irvine; grandchildren, Zachary Barnett (Melinda), Irvine; Sgt. Martin Ray McCoy, Sylvana McCoy, both of Lexington; and Rebecca Lopez (Cody), Clay City; one great grandson, Zane Lopez, Clay City; step-grandchildren, Courtney Roberts (Scott) and Kyle Hall; step great grandchildren, Lillie and Levi Roberts; and one brother, Homer McCoy.

Donna Kay Barnett, age 44, of Stanton, Kentucky, wife of Matt Barnett, passed away Monday, April 27, 2015 at her residence with her family by her bedside.
She was born May 15, 1970 in Clark County and was a member of the Black Creek Holiness Church and a Dollar Store employee.
Mrs. Barnett is survived by her father, Bev Means; husband, Matt Barnett of Stanton, two sons: Jose Ruiz and Sean Ruiz, both of Stanton; five daughters: Ashley McIntosh of Stanton, Bridgette Barnett, Brianna Dunn, both of Clay City, Kayla Ruiz, and Diana Rivera, both of Stanton; four brothers: Ronnie Means, Eddie Means, both of Richmond; Franklin Means and Josh Means; three sisters: Wanda Payne of Alabama, Shanda Means of Mt. Sterling, and Angel Means.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Margaret L. Powell Richardson; and two sons: Bryan Mathew Barnett and James Mathew Barnett Jr.
Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, April 30th at the Grayson Funeral Home Chapel, 201 7th Avenue in Clay City, with Bro. John Anderson officiating. Friends visited Wednesday, April 29th from 6 – 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial was in the Jackson Chapel Cemetery.

Eola Haggard Clevenger, born Tuesday, October 2, 1923, daughter of the late John and Zilla Lucas, passed away on Monday April 27, 2015 at the Compassionate Care Center in Richmond, Kentucky, at the age of 91 years, 6 months, and 25 days.
She was a member of the McGuire Memorial Presbyterian Church and an active member of the Primrose Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.
Ms. Clevenger is survived by four children: Donald Cockerham (Fay) of Irvine, Tom Cockerham (Janie) of Beattyville, Greg Clevenger (Tina) of Florence, and Tony Clevenger of Beattyville; four grandchildren: Tommy Cockerham (Valarie) of Winchester, Lucas Cockerham (Jacinda) of Richmond, Chase Clevenger (Christina) of Irvine, and Toni Clevenger of Florence; two great grandchildren, Tyler and Carrie, as well as a host of many relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a grandson, Jeff Cockerham; and four sisters: Millicent, Rubye, Lena, and Irene.
Visitation began at 11:00 a.m., Friday, May 1st at Newnam Funeral Home Chapel in Beattyville, followed by the service at 1:00 p.m. Burial was in the Lucas Cemetery, Abner Flat Road.

Peggy Jean Rhodus Sparks, 77
Peggy Jean Rhodus Sparks, age 77, of Racetrack Road in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Sunday, April 26, 2015, at the Clark Regional Medical Center in Winchester, following a long illness.
She was born May 12, 1937 in Hamilton, Ohio and was the daughter of the late Bill and Etta Roark Rhodus. She was a retired secretary with the Estill County Board of Education and a member of the Church of the Living God. She had lived in Estill County most of her life.
Mrs. Sparks is survived by her husband, Charlie Sparks; one daughter, Renaye Marcum (Danny), Estill County; two sons: Gary Lee Sparks and Larry Sparks (Belinda), both of Estill County; one sister, Arlene Hutton, Ohio; three grandchildren: Jeremy Sparks (Tiffany), Jessica Kirby (Brian) and Brandon Lee Sparks (Heather); and two great grandchildren: Ella and Abby Kirby.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Joyce Rhodus.
Funeral services were conducted at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, April 30th at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Tom Hall. Burial was at the Stevens Cemetery. Friends called between 6 and 9 p.m., Wednesday, April 29th, at the funeral home.
Pallbearers were Gary Sparks, Larry Sparks, Jeremy Sparks, Brandon Sparks, Danny Marcum & Brian Kirby.
Honorary pallbearers were Jackie Sparks, Ray Sparks, Donald Dawson, Timothy Puckett, Eric Sparks, Tim Sparks, David Sparks, Michael Brandenburg, Jason Rainey, Kevin Sparks, Ashley Sparks, Billy Havens and Sean Collins.
