Patriots' 6th & 8th Grade Make Semi-Finals Of Tourney
The Estill County Middle School Patriots 8th grade closed out their season in the semifinals of the conference tourney with a heartbreaking loss to Clark Moores on Thursday night, February 13, 2014, by a score of 50-37.
Clark Moores jumped out to a quick lead in the beginning of the game; the Patriots went on a run before the half and went into the locker room only trailing by three points.
The third quarter spelled trouble for the Patriots, they were outscored 9-2 and went into the 4th quarter down 10 points and were not able to mount a 4th quarter comeback.
The Patriots had defeated Clark Moores in both regular season meetings.
The 8th grade Patriots were led in scoring by Caleb Bonny with 19 and Joe Benton added 18.
The 8th grade opened the tourney with a blow out win over Caudill by a score of 53-31.
The Patriots were led in scoring in the Caudill win by Caleb Bonny with 25 points, Joe Benton 15, Logan Beckler 4, Dylan Evans, Andrew Doty, Kevin Richardson and Logan Napier each added 2, and Will Burkhart 1.
The ECMS 8th grade closed out the season with an impressive record of 25-7, and finished runner up to Foley for the regular season’s top position, finishing conference play with a record of 13-3.
The 8th grade Patriots were undefeated against 56th District and 14th Region competition and were the 56th District champions for the third straight year. The 8th grade Patriots also posted three 20 win seasons in their three seasons at ECMS.
“The accomplishments of this group were phenomenal, and when you spend as much time around them as this coaching staff has, you understand why they have enjoyed this level of success. They are an unbelievable group of young men on the court, in the classroom and in life, “ remarked Coach Jim Bonny.
The Patriots 7th grade lost in the first round to Madison Middle by a score of 58-34.
They were led in scoring by Logan Napier with 14 points, Micah Adams 9, Conner Chaney 4, Justin Rison 3, and Trevor Evans and Trent Walker with 2 each.
The 7th grade ended the season with a record of 11-18 and were runner ups in the 56th district tournament.
The 6th grade opened tournament play with a big win over Caudill by a score of 53-24.
They were led in scoring by Joe Benton with 18 points; Micah Adams, Ethan Webb and Chase Rawlins added 6 each, Conner Hall and Cody Hatton both added 4, and Chase Muncie, Coben Clem and Micah Swim 2, Cobbe Click 1.
The 6th graders were defeated in the semis as they traveled to Rockcastle County, by a score of 57-43.
Joe Benton led in scoring with 18, Cody Hatton 8, Chase Muncie 5, Micah Adams 4, Matthew Woolery 3, Conner Hall, and Chase Rawlins 2, and Cobbe Click 1.
The 6th grade team ended the season with a record of 25-6, with a 3rd place conference regular season mark of 13-3.
The Patriots 6th won the 56th District championship and were undefeated against 56th District competition for the season.

Teresa Gail Estes, 57
Teresa Gail Estes, age 57, of White Oak Road in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Friday, February 28, 2014, at the Compassionate Care Center in Richmond, following a long illness.
She was born July 25, 1956 in Estill County and was the daughter of Leslie Elwood and Emma Fielder Tipton. She was a former customer service employee at the Richmond Mall and was a member of the Mt. Carmel Christian Church. She had lived in Estill County all of her life.
Mrs. Estes was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Fredrick “Fred” Estes.
Survivors, in addition to her father and mother, include one daughter, Christy French (Travis), Richmond; one sister, Kathy Ann Tipton, Richmond; one brother, Donald Ray Tipton (Sandy), Irvine; and seven grandchildren: Johnathan, Cara, Morgan, Tavin, Rachel, Dakota and Laura Mae.
She was preceded in death by one son, John Leslie Estes.
Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, March 4th at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Mark Pearson. Burial was at the West Irvine Cemetery. Friends called between 6 and 9 p.m., Monday, March 2nd at the funeral home.
Pallbearers were Todd Walters, Leo Mays, Tory Jones, Jonathan Walters, Anthony Arthur, Rusty Riddell and Robbie Hunter.
Elmer Goosey, Jr., age 68, of Worrells Road in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Thursday, February 27, 2014, at the Baptist Health Hospital in Lexington after a long illness.
He was born September 16, 1945 in Madison County and was the son of the late Elmer Sr. and Pearl Conner Goosey. He was a roofer and had lived in Estill County most of his life.
Mr. Goosey is survived by three daughters: Shelia Thomas, Estill County; Lisa Rose Johnson, Jessamine County; and Pamela Brooks, Estill County; one son, Aaron Goosey, Estill County; three sisters: Barbara Richardson, Estill County; Brenda Logsdon, Madison County; and Geraldine Chaney, Estill County; three brothers: Raymond Goosey, Randall Goosey, and Billy Goosey, all of Estill County; five grandchildren: Jessica Rose, Ryan Thomas, Lauren Hall, Connor Brooks and Haley Goosey; his loving companion: Cheryl; and he was loved by several step-children and step-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Shirley Estes; and one grandchild, Magen Thomas.
Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, March 2nd at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Beverly Arvin. Burial was at the Goosey Cemetery. Friends called between 6 and 9 p.m., Saturday, March 1st at the funeral home.
Pallbearers were Jarrad Brown, Anthony Wallace, Steve Chaney, Billy Paul Chaney and Brian Estes.
Opal Mae Chrisman, age 87, of Irvine, Kentucky, the widow of Edward Chrisman, passed away Monday, February 24, 2014, at Pine Meadows Health Care in Lexington.
She was born April 7, 1926, in Estill County, to Sherman and Mary Thomas French, both of whom preceded her in death. She was a member of Red Lick Holiness Church, and she enjoyed flowers, gardening, and bird watching; but, above all else, she loved her grandchildren.
Survivors include her sons: Jim Chrisman (Judy) and Larry Chrisman (Joan), both of Irvine; her daughters: Shirley Berryman (Bob) of Richmond, and Brenda Kay (John) of Versailles; one sister, Delina Roop of Berea; six grandchildren: Greg Chrisman (Lisa), Rodney Chrisman (Heather), Chad Chrisman, Shane Chrisman (Melissa), Robert Berryman, and Bill Berryman (Paige); and two step grandchildren, Colleen Kay and Courtney Quire (Paul); 14 great grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, Edward, and her parents; she was preceded in death by one grandson, Jeffrey Chrisman; one sister, Mable Richardson; and three brothers, James, Paul and Jennings French.
Funeral services for Mrs. Chrisman were held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, February 27th at Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home, 1110 Barnes Mill Road, Richmond, with Bro. Charlie Wilson officiating the service. Her grandchildren served as pallbearers. Burial followed at the West Irvine Cemetery in Irvine. Visitation was from 5 – 9 p.m., Wednesday, February 26th at the funeral home.
Joyce Ann Gross, age 53, of Cottman Lane in Winchester, Kentucky, passed away Saturday, February 22, 2014, at her home following a long illness.
She was born March 26, 1960, in Hazard, Kentucky, the daughter of the late Dennis Back and Maggie Mullins. She was a homemaker and had lived in Winchester most of her life.
Mrs. Gross is survived by her husband, Tommy Daniel Gross; two daughters: Gina Barnett, Winchester; and Crystal Gross, Texas; three sons: Tony Gross, Texas; Howard Gross and Tommy Gross, both of Winchester; four sisters: Shirley Lucas, Donna Gross, both of Whitesburg; Percy Combs, Georgia; and Barbara Ann Collins, Stanton; and one brother, Harold Back, Irvine.
Funeral services were conducted at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 25th at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel with burial following at the Alexander Cemetery. Friends called from 11:00 a.m. until service time, Tuesday, at the funeral home.
Sonia Kaye Doty Abel, age 42, wife of Eugene Abel, passed away Friday, February 21, 2014 at the Compassionate Care Center in Richmond, Kentucky, after a long illness.
She was a native of Estill County, and the office manager of Save-A-Lot grocery. Mrs. Abel was born May 10, 1971, a daughter of Marcella Isaacs Doty and the late James P. Doty. She was a member of the Sandhill Christian Church and loved scrapbooking with her sister.
Mrs. Abel was preceded in death by her brother, James R. Doty.
Survivors other than her husband of 23 years, Eugene, include her daughter, Kaytlyn Abel; her son, John Abel; her brothers: Brian Doty (Jennifer) and Philip Todd Doty; her sisters: Cynthia Barnes (Roger) and Brittany Miller (Christopher); her nieces and nephews: Tiffany Brinegar(Christopher), Roger Allen Barnes, Joshua Barnes, Devan Doty, Andrew Doty, Lane Doty, Adam Doty (Heather), Landon Doty, Zoey Abel and Addie Winker; several aunts, uncles, and cousins; and by her very special friends: Amanda Rose, Jonathan Abel, and all Save-A-Lot employees.
Services were held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, February 24th at Lewis Funeral Home with Matt Vaught officiating. Burial followed in the West Irvine Cemetery. Friends called anytime after 6:00 p.m., Sunday, February 23rd at the funeral home.
Pallbearers were Jonathan Abel, Jeff Richardson, Christopher Miller, Joshua Barnes, Devan Doty and Adam Doty.
Jonathan Russell Jones, aka Rusty Callahan, age 54, of Wagersville Road in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Wednesday, February 19, 2014, at the Compassionate Care Center in Richmond, after a short illness.
He was born July 22, 1959 in Dayton, Ohio. He was a painter and had lived in Estill County most of his life.
Mr. Jones is survived by his wife, Rebecca Jones; his mothers: Wanda L. Williamson, Betsy Vancil and Jo Callahan; one daughter, Katherine Jones, Ravenna; five sisters: Tenia King, Lisa Hock, both of Ohio; Mary Dillingham, Virginia; Donna Tipton and Dianna McKinney, both of Estill County; two brothers: Bo Callahan and Bobby Callahan, both of Estill County; and a special cousin, Gwen Hager.
He was preceded in death by his father, Clifton Carlton Callahan; two sons: Jonathon Russell Jones II and Matthew Tyler Jones; and one sister, Lisa Williamson.
Graveside services were conducted at 1:00 p.m., Friday, February 21st at the Callahan Cemetery by Bro. Jerry Rose and Bro. Terry Barnes.
Pallbearers were Bo Callahan, Bobby Callahan, Dewey McKinney, Matthew Hager, David Hager and Ronnie Tipton.
Warren F. Toler Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Gena Whitehead Tipton, age 52, of Reges Road in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Tuesday, February 18, 2014, at her home following a long illness.
She was born February 10, 1962 in Hyden, Kentucky, and was the daughter of Virginia Lee Morgan Whitehead and the late Clifford Whitehead. She was a homemaker and had lived in Estill County most of her life.
Mrs. Tipton is survived by her husband, Ricky Tipton; her mother, Virginia Lee Morgan Whitehead; one sister, Diane Sizemore, Hyden; three brothers: Roy Lee Whitehead, Winchester; Roger Wade Whitehead, Harlan; and Randy Richard Whitehead, Hyden; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, February 22nd at the Grassy Branch Church in Hyden. Burial will be at the Whitehead Cemetery. Friends called between 6 and 9 p.m., Friday, February 21st at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home in Irvine; and after 11 a.m., Saturday, at the Grassy Branch Church.
