Helen Garrett Rhodes, 83

    Helen Garrett Rhodes, age 83, the widow of W. Earl Rhodes, of Richmond, Kentucky, died Sunday, August 9, 2015.
    She was born in Estill County on September 28, 1931 to Hobert Garrett and Pearl Floyd Garrett. She was a retired employee of Philips Lighting Co., formerly Westinghouse, and also served as hostess for Cedar Village Restaurant in Irvine. Mrs. Rhodes was a member of First Baptist Church in Richmond but for many years was a member of Cedar Grove Methodist Church in Irvine.
    She is survived by her daughter, Vicki Whitaker (Dean); two sons, Harold Gene Stevens (Jennifer), and Kenneth Lee Stevens (Joy); two stepdaughters: Cathy Whitaker (Mark), and Peggy Parks; three grandchildren, Todd Tipton (Amy), Amanda Jolly (Austin), and Brittany Stevens; a great granddaughter, Hope Tipton; a sister-in-law, Mary Garrett; a nephew, Bill (Sharon) Garrett; and many other extended family members.
    In addition to her husband, W. Earl Rhodes, she was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew L. Parks; her parents, Hobert Garrett and Pearl Floyd Garrett; her brother, Douglas L. Garrett; infant twin brothers, Harold Dean Garrett and Carroll Gene Garrett; a granddaughter, Cassandra Gray; and a grandson, Steven Garrett Tipton.
    Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 12th at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Greg McClellan with burial to follow in West Irvine Cemetery. Friends may call between 5 and 8 p.m., Tuesday, August 11th at the funeral home.
    Pallbearers will be Robert Calder, Bill Garrett, Ralph Howe, Charles Park, Todd Tipton and Dean Whitaker.

Lucille Sparks Brandenburg, 74

    Lucille Sparks Brandenburg, 74, wife of Matt Colby Brandenburg, passed away Friday, August 7, 2015 at her home surrounded by her loving family.
    She was a native of Estill County, born August 23, 1940, a daughter of the late Jesse Everett and Maggie Elizabeth Rawlins Sparks. She enjoyed cooking and canning. Mrs. Brandenburg was formerly employed at the Curlee Clothing Company of Winchester for fifteen years and was also was a caregiver to the elderly for fifteen years.. She was a member of the Ravenna Church of God.
    Mrs. Brandenburg was preceded in death by her brother, Herman Sparks; and her sister, Mildred Dawson.
    Survivors other than her husband of over 50 years, Matt Colby Brandenburg, include her son, Michael Dewayne Brandenburg; her sisters: Helen Fallen (Kelly) and Edith Mae Rainey (Harold); her brothers: Ernest Lee Sparks (Cheryi), Jessie Jr. Sparks (Crystal), Clyde Sparks (Patty), Charlie Sparks, and Hubert Sparks (Louise); two grandchildren: Hannah and Jacob Brandenburg; and several nieces and nephews.
    Services will be held at Lewis Funeral Home on Monday, August 10th at 11:00 a.m. with Bro. Hargus Gordon officiating. Burial will follow in the Stephens Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home anytime after 6:00 p.m., Sunday, August 9th and 9:00 a.m. until service time on Monday.

Kenneth Eugene Caldwell, Sr., 68

    Kenneth Eugene Caldwell, Sr., age 68, of South Winn Avenue in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Monday, August 3, 2015, at the Marcum & Wallace Memorial Hospital after a sudden illness.
    He was born October 2, 1946 in Lee County and was the son of the late Omar and Ruby Rogers Caldwell. He was a retired Trane Company employee and a member of the Beech Grove Baptist Church. He had lived in Estill County most of his life.
    Mr. Caldwell is survived by his wife, Frances Mae Rose Caldwell; one daughter, Tonya Nicole Isaacs Beard (Chad), Estill County; two sons: Kenneth Caldwell, Jr., Estill County; and Dwight David Durbin (Jennifer), Madison County; one stepdaughter, Kathy Isaacs, Madison County; two sisters: Nancy Tipton, Estill County; and Virginia Caldwell, Lee County; one brother, Gary Caldwell, Fayette County; and three grandchildren: Carter Durbin, Mason Durbin and Addison Beard.
    He was preceded in death by one stepdaughter, Sharon Durbin; and three brothers: Darrell, Bobby and Jerry Caldwell.
    Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, August 6th at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Marion Brewer and Bro. Jason Brooks. Burial was at the Sunset Memorial Gardens. Friends called between 6 and 9 p.m., Wednesday, August 5th at the funeral home.
    Pallbearers were Devon Caldwell, Eric Caldwell, Wayne Tapp, Paul Samples, Bo Rogers and Larry Hobbs.

David Freyman, 60

    David Freyman, age 60, of Means, Kentucky, died Saturday evening, August 1, 2015, at his residence. He loved gardening and was a longtime member of Estill County’s Garden Thyme Herb Club.
    Mr. Freyman was born January 6, 1955 in Allentown, Pennsylvania to the late Dale & Rose Stier Freyman.
    David was a general contractor in construction, of the Christian Biblical Church of God faith, and he moved to Means four years ago from Port St. Lucie, Florida. He was a knowledge seeker and had a passion for computers and technology and also enjoyed being a part of the prepper movement. David will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
    Survivors include; his wife, Sandra Mauk Freyman of Means; three sons, Patrick Freyman (Afsaneh) of Sun Valley, California, Clinton Freyman (Donna) of Port St. Lucie, Florida and Benjamin Freyman of Means; one brother, Jimmy Freyman of Wellington, Kentucky; three sisters, Roseanne Whitney (Donald) of Melbourne, Florida, Cindy Freyman and Ruth Noll (Mark) both of North Carolina.
    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Dennis Freyman and two sisters, Donna and Diane Freyman.
    The family had a private memorial service.
    Arrangements were made by Coffman Funeral Service of Mount Sterling.

Helen Ballard Barnes, 73

    Helen Ballard Barnes, age 73, of Rice Street Apartments in Irvine, Kentucky, widow of Clyde Barnes, died around Wednesday, July 22, 2015, at the University of Kentucky Hospital in Lexington.
    She was a native of Estill County, born May 15, 1942, a daughter of the late Jim and Rosa Henry Ballard. She had lived in Estill County most of her life.
    Mrs. Barnes is survived by two sons: Eldon Barnes and Bobby Sam Barnes (Beth), both of Irvine; two grandchildren: Kaitlyn Barnes and Bobby Sam Barnes; and three sisters: Emma Lee Neal, Evie B. West and Martha Bush.
    She was preceded in death by one sister, Edith M. West; and three brothers: Arthur Ballard, T.J. Ballard, and O.W. Ballard.
    A graveside memorial service was held Saturday, August 1st at the Gray Cemetery in Ravenna.

    Christine Woolery Abner, 82, widow of Charles F. “C.F.” Abner, passed away Friday, July 31, 2015, in Hazard, Kentucky.
    She was a native of Estill County, a daughter of the late Louis and Martha Carol Woolery. Mrs. Abner was a homemaker.
    She was preceded in death by her brothers, James and Bobby Gene Woolery; and her sister, Margaret Snowden.
    Survivors include two sisters: Louise Wiseman(Raymond), and Mary Jenkins; and several nieces and nephews.
    Services were held 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 4th at Lewis Funeral Home with Bro. Glendon Woosley officiating. Burial followed in the Abner Cemetery. Friends called anytime after 11:00 a.m until service time on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Luther B. Dunaway, 84

    Luther B. Dunaway, age 84, departed his earthly home Friday, May 15, 2015. He was residing at Brook Vale Assisted Living in Ocala, Florida.
    He was born in Irvine, Kentucky, June 30, 1930, a son of the late Willie Dunaway and Mollie Powell Dunaway.
    Luther is survived by five siblings: Margaret Cornett Kerrison, Louise D. Holbrook (Ray), Shirley D. Durbin (Scotty), Larry Dunaway (Jean), and Darrell Dunaway.
    He was preceded in death by a sister, Chestina D. Noland (Paul Noland) and two brothers, George Dunaway (Alice) and Elmer Dunaway (Donna).
    Luther is also survived by his close friend Don Jenkins.
    Private services were conducted July 25, 2015 in Ocala, Florida.
    Arrangements were under the direction of Baldwin Brothers Funeral Home in Ocala, Florida.

Ernest “Ernie” Beckler, 80

    Ernest “Ernie” Beckler, age 80, of Garrett Avenue in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Sunday, August 2, 2015 at his home following a long illness.
    He was born October 6, 1934 in Estill County, the son of the late Achilles and Ella Tipton Bechler. He was a truck driver for many years and also served Estill County for 17 years as a Constable in District #1. Mr. Beckler was a United States Air Force veteran and was an avid golfer until he became ill. He was a member of the American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans. He was a member of the St. Elizabeth Catholic Church.
    Mr. Beckler is survived by his wife, Marian Winter Beckler; a son, John Paul Beckler (Mandy), Irvine; three grandchildren: Cody, Kristen, and Logan Beckler; a sister-in-law, Joanna Beckler, Greensboro, North Carolina; and many nieces and nephews.
    He was preceded in death by six sisters: Beatrice, Mabel, Edith, Lillian, Addie, and Gladys; and four brothers: Elmer, Earl, Achilles “Beck”, and Carl Beckler.
    Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, August 5th at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church by Father Al Fritsch with burial following in the South Irvine Cemetery. Friends called between 6 and 9 p.m., Tuesday, August 4th at the funeral home.

Joyce Marie Yeary Cole, 79

    Joyce Marie Yeary Cole, age 79, O'Possum Run Road in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Sunday, August 2, 2015 at her home following a sudden illness.
    She was born November 15, 1935 in Hamilton, Ohio, the daughter of the late Ira L. and Mellie Marie Monday Yeary. Mrs. Cole was a homemaker and had lived in Estill County for the last three years. She was a member of the Holiness Church.
    Mrs. Cole was preceded in death by her husband, John Tilford Cole.
    She is survived by three sons: John David Cole (Deborah), Lee County; Donald Cole, Independence; and Dennis Matthew Cole (Teresa), Estill County; three sisters: Helen Moses, Ohio; Clara Ballard, Somerset; and Juanita Maloon, Ohio; three brothers: Frank Yeary, Tennessee; Donald Yeary and William Yeary, both of Ohio; and six grandchildren.
    In addition to her husband, she is also preceded in death by three siblings: Doris Moses, James Yeary, and Eugene Yeary.

Roy Noland Jr.

    Roy Noland Jr., born in Irvine, Kentucky on June 3, 1937, went to his heavenly home Friday, July 31, 2015.
    Roy, affectionately known to many as “Birdlegs,” served with honor and distinction in the Kentucky National Guard and worked on the L & N Railroad. He never lost his love of pretty women, fast cars and horses and trading at the flea markets.
    He was preceded in death by one daughter, Debra Michelle Noland; his parents Roy & Dorothy; one brother, Frank Noland; and a sister, Jean Noland Bennett.
    Mr. Noland is survived by a brother, Fred Noland; a sister, Mary Grace Pinkston (John); four children: Kevin Noland (Michelle), Heather Risen (Chris), Roy Dwayne Noland (Bo) and Sandy Coleman (Gary), eight grandchildren, one great grandchild; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
    Services were held at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home. Visitation was after 11 a.m., Tuesday, at the funeral home.

Joseph Benjamin “J.B.” Henry, 80

    Joseph Benjamin “J.B.” Henry, age 80, of Newport, Kentucky, passed away Thursday, July 30, 2015 at St. Elizabeth Hospice Center in Edgewood, following a short illness.
    He was born November 1, 1934, in Estill County, the son of the late Joseph Lee and Mabel Rawlins Henry. He was a construction worker with Universal Construction in Cincinnati and attended the Church of God. He was raised in Estill County but spent most of his life in Newport.
    Mr. Henry is survived by his wife: Arine Wiseman Henry; two daughters: Teresa Sue Smith (Hays), Fort Thomas; and Anna Marie Grotjan (Thomas), Alexandria; five sisters: Rebecca Pennington (Dallas), Danville; Mary Mattox (Clarence), Irvine; Gloria Anna Williams, Rita Faye Tipton, both of Richmond; and Glenda June Arvin (Ray), Beattyville; three grandchildren, eight great grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Donna Gayle Henry.
    He was preceded in death by his son, Jerry Henry; a sister, Viola Sue Tipton; and four brothers; Billy Ray, Carl, Ronald Lee, and Gilbert Henry.
    Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, August 2nd at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Jerry Horn with burial following in the McDowell Cemetery. Friends called after 12 Noon, Sunday, until service time at the funeral home.

    Kathleen A. Majetich Dixon, age 70, of Richmond Road in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Wednesday, July 29, 2015, at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington, following a long illness.
    She was born June 25, 1946 in Joliette, Illinois and was the daughter of the late Stephen John and Mary Ann Vranich Majetich. She was a retired Carhartt, Inc. employee where she had worked for 31 years as a seamstress. She attended the Pentecostal Church and had lived in Estill County most of her life.
    Mrs. Dixon is survived by her husband, Darrell Dixon; one daughter, Tina Gentry (Alfred), Irvine; two grandchildren: Shabrina Gentry Rosenbauer (Ben) and Jaycob Gentry; and two great grandchildren: Landon and Kaden Rosenbauer.

Harold B. Culton

    Harold B. Culton, age 81, of Richmond, Kentucky, passed away Tuesday, July 28, 2015 at Kenwood Health & Rehabilitation.
    The son of the late Joby Culton and Maude Collins Culton, he was born in Jackson County on May 31, 1934. He worked as a farmer for many years. Later in life, his pastimes were working puzzles and playing bingo. On July 30, 1955, he united in marriage to Lillian Sparks Culton who preceded him in death on December 18, 2014. They had celebrated 59 years of marriage.
    Survivors include: two sons: Darrell Culton (Teresa) of Irvine and Donald Culton of Richmond; four daughters: JoEtta Dunn (Jerry), Joyce Smith (Kenny), all of Richmond; Betty Oliver (Harold) of Irvine and Kathy Smith (Chris Ponder) of Berea; his brother, Loranza Culton; 11 grandchildren; five step-grandchildren and several great grandchildren and other relatives.
    Mr. Culton was also preceded in death by four brothers: Omer, Limuel, Clarence and Clifford Culton; his sister, Katherine Oliver; and two grandchildren: Cody Culton and Stacy Dunn.
    Funeral Services were conducted at 11:00 a.m,. Friday, July 31st at the Combs, Parsons & Collins Funeral Home, 328 West Main Street, Richmond, with Bro. Frankie Sparks, Bro. Charlie Wilson and Bro. Scott Guiley officiating. Burial followed in the Madison County Memorial Gardens. Visitation was from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m., Thursday, July 30th at the funeral home.

Charlie Allen “Dobbin” Isaacs, Jr., 45

    Charlie Allen “Dobbin” Isaacs, Jr., age 45, of Marcum Road in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Tuesday, July 28, 2015, at his home following a long illness.
    He was born January 18, 1970 in Estill County and was the son of Charlie Allen and Virginia Mae Estes Isaacs. He was a former brick layer and attended the Drip Rock Baptist Church. He had lived in Estill County all of his life.
    Survivors, in addition to his parents, include two sisters: Becky Tipton (Steve) and Brenda Isaacs, both of Estill County; one half-brother, Richard Lee Isaacs, Estill County; one nephew, Stevie Tipton; a great niece, Lacey Tipton; a great nephew, Allen Clay Tipton; and another family member, Pam Bradley.
    He was preceded in death by a sister, Karen Isaacs.
    Graveside services were conducted at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, July 30th at the Marcum Cemetery by Bro. Ricky Isaacs.

Earl Franklin Ashcraft, 92

Earl Franklin Ashcraft

    Earl Franklin Ashcraft, 92, Fruitland Park, Florida, died July 27, 2015, at Leesburg Regional Medical Center. He was a former resident of Irvine, Kentucky. He was born Aug. 13, 1922, in Beattyville, the son of Ezart Francis Ashcraft and Cloria Mae Brandenburg Ashcraft.
     He graduated from Irvine Grade School, Irvine High School and then the University Of Kentucky School Of Law. While at Irvine High School, he was elected president of his sophomore class. At the University of Kentucky he was elected and served on the student council for several years. Before his graduation from the University of Kentucky he was elected State Representative of the 77th Legislative District of Kentucky, composed of Estill and Powell counties and served as such during the 1948-1949 regular and special session of the Kentucky legislature. While serving in the legislature, he was honored by his fellow Republican members who elected him as Whip of the Republican Party.  When he was elected State Representative he was the youngest person ever elected to the Kentucky Legislature.
    While a practicing attorney, Mr. Ashcraft was elected Circuit Judge of the 23rd Judicial District of Kentucky, composed of Estill, Lee and Owsley counties. After serving as Circuit Judge he was elected and served as Estill County Attorney. Next he was appointed and served as Estill District Court Trial Commissioner. After that he was elected and served as District Judge of the 23rd Judicial District of Kentucky, composed of Estill, Lee and Owsley counties. Then he retired and bought a place in Florida so that he could pursue the passion of his life, fishing. 
     Mr. Ashcraft was a Mason and a fifty-year member of the Irvine Masonic Lodge No. 137 F&AM.  
     He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Gaye Click Ashcraft; a brother, Francis Marion Ashcraft, who passed away on Feb. 10, 2015, at the age of 90; a half-sister, Candace Ashcraft Tabor; and a brother-in-law, William Cody Thompson.
    Mr. Ashcraft is survived by his daughter, Barbara Ann Ashcraft Harned and son-in-law, Ack Lee Harned, Brandenburg; two granddaughters, Kimberly Dawn Harned, Elizabethtown, and Susan Camille (Kevin) Hobbs, The Woodlands, Texas; three great-grandchildren, Kevin Tyler Hobbs, Kaylee Allison Hobbs and Braden Acklee Hobbs; a sister, Beverly Ashcraft Thompson, Ravenna; a sister-in-law, Deloris Huddleston Ashcraft, St. Charles, Missouri; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Christina Belinda Conway, 55

    Christina Belinda Conway, age 55, wife of John Conway, passed away Saturday, July 25, 2015 at her home in Irvine, Kentucky, after a long illness.
    She was a native of Louisiana, born September 20, 1959, a daughter of Charles B. Murray and the late Pauline Cole Cupples. Mrs. Conway was of the Christian faith, a Bible teacher, an educator, and a non-denominational ordained pastor. She was a United States Air Force wife. Mrs. Conway had a heart to teach children. She was a nutritionist for Health Lifestyle. She was an advocate against child pornography.
    Mrs. Conway was preceded in death by her mother, Pauline Cole Cupples; and her sister, Janice Hickey.
    Survivors, other than her husband John and her father Charles B. Murray, include her daughter, Krystal Danielle Conway (Joseph Richard Colley); her brother, Byron Cupples; her sisters: Ashley Cook and Chastity Clark Vanderford; her grandchildren: Caleb Isaac Conway, Kyla Christina and Trinity Grace Colley; and two special friends: Kathy Napp and Sharon Ahrens.

James Daniel "Danny" Parsons, 63

    James Daniel "Danny" Parsons, age 63, husband of Cathy, passed away Tuesday, July 21, 2015 at the Compassionate Care Center in Richmond, Kentucky, after a long illness.
    He was a native of Estill County, a son of the late Leonard and Ruby Sparks Parsons. Danny had been a plumber his entire life. He loved playing country music for the Peacemakers, VFW, and American Legion.
    Survivors, other than his wife Cathy, include his daughters: Danisha Parsons and Stacy Hall (Bryan); his son, Brian Parsons; his sister, Sandra Cox (Darrel); his grandchildren: Logan Hall, Kaitlyn Hall, Shaelyn Parsons, Andrew Chaney and Ashley Darbyshire; and several nieces and nephews.
    A memorial service was held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 1st at the Easter Valley Baptist Church with Bro. Mike Davis officiating. Friends called after 10:00 a.m. until service time Saturday, at the church.

    Pauline Sams Puckett, age 83, of Chamberlain Branch in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Monday, July 6, 2015 at the Irvine Health and Rehabilitation Center, after a short illness.
    She was born December 10, 1931 in Estill County, the daughter of the late Elva Sams and Artie Harris Sams. Mrs. Puckett was a homemaker and an avid dog lover. She had lived in Estill County all of her life.
    Ms. Puckett is survived by one son, Jimmy Dewayne Puckett of Estill County; one sister, Lillian Frances Barnes of Estill County; and several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
    She is preceded in death by two sisters: Wilma Jean Sams and Brenda Imogene Williams; and three brothers: Jimmy, Johnny and Bobby Joe Sams.
