Herbert Lee Childers, 88

    Herbert Lee Childers, age 88, World War II Navy veteran of Stanton, Kentucky passed away on Saturday, November 14, 2015 at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington.
    Born in Wolfe County, he was the son of the late William Hoy and Ollie Trent Childers, and he was a retired bull dozer operator. He was a member of Stanton Christian Church and a founding member of the Clay City Lions Club.
    In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wives, Nina Purrell Childers and Betty Newkirk Childers; and by his brother, James Monroe Childers.
    Mr. Childers is survived by his daughter, Lana Childers Clark of Port Orange, Florida; two grandsons: Michael Malone of Ames, Iowa; and Shawn Clark of Orlando, Florida; four sisters: Marlene Meadows of Stanton, Lois Davis of Clay City, Avanell Hatton (Pierce) of North Middletown, and Patricia Ann Bellamy (Larry) of Irvine; and by his nephew, Rick Entwistle of Houston, Texas.
    Funeral services officiated by Pastor Chris Moon with eulogy by Gary Meadows will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, November 18th at Hearne Funeral Home, 125 West College Avenue, Stanton. Visitation began at 6:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 17th at the funeral home. Burial with military honors will be in Stanton Cemetery, Main Street, Stanton.
    Active pallbearers are Gary Meadows, Warren Meadows, Larry Bellamy, Ronnie Hall, Anthony Patrick and Rick Entwistle.
    Honorary pallbearers are Roger Stacy, Dwain and Nellie Anderson, Anita Hall, J. B. Crain and members of Stanton Christian Church.
    The family expresses their sincere appreciation and gratitude to the doctors, nurses and staff of University of Kentucky Medical Center for the excellent care they provided for Herbert.

Donald Wayne Friend

    Donald Wayne Friend, age 67, husband of Carol Friend, passed away Friday, November 13, 2015 at his home.
    He was born April 12, 1948 in Estill County to the late Sidney and Cecelia Whisman Friend. He was a United States Army veteran.
    Survivors include his wife, Carol Friend; six brothers: Eugene Friend, Ronnie Friend, Paul David Friend, Tim Friend, Gary Friend, and Dwight "Ike" Friend; two sisters: Josephine Gross and Wavelene Sparks; a granddaughter, Megan Bellamy (Cody); special grandchildren, Hope Helton, Katherine Townsend, Chelsea Dunn, Kyler Dunn, McKayla Updike, Ryan Perish, and Rachel Abrams; and special great grandchildren, Nevaeh and Brenton.
    He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Donna Friend; and five brothers: Bobby Friend, Bill Friend, Sidney Friend Jr., Allen Friend, and Eddie Friend.
    Funeral services were held Monday, November 16th at 1:00 p.m. at Davis & Davis Funeral Home, Stanton by Rev. Wilford Helton. Visitation was held on Sunday, November 15th after 5:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial was in the Friend Cemetery with military honors.

Delmas Leon Tipton, 82

    Delmas Leon Tipton, age 82, of Wiseman Crossing in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Friday, November 13, 2015 at the Marcum and Wallace Memorial Hospital following a long illness.
    He was born January 19, 1933, in Estill County, a son of the late Warren and Alene Hamilton Tipton. He retired from Bundy Tubing and was a farmer. He was a member of the White Oak Church of God and had lived in Estill County all of his life. He was a Kentucky Colonel.
    Mr. Tipton was preceded in death by his wife, Georgia Mae Wiseman Tipton.
    He is survived by a son, Steven Tipton, Estill County; four sisters: Loretta Crowe, Estill County; Thelma Frymear, Midway; Connie Melear, Harrodsburg; and Sue Hazelwood, Owensboro; two brothers: Burnell Tipton, North Carolina; and Ronnie Tipton, Estill County; two grandchildren: Joseph Tipton and Jeffery Tipton; and one great grandchild, Sylas Tipton.
    In addition to his wife, he is also preceded in death by three siblings: Ruth Moreland, James Tipton, and Gary Tipton.
    Funeral services were conducted at 1:00 p.m., Monday, November 16th at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Glyndon Woosley with burial following at the Wiseman Cemetery. Friends called between 6 and 9 p.m. on Sunday night, November 15th at the funeral home.
    Pallbearers were Steve Tipton, Joe Tipton, Jeff Tipton, Kenny Tuttle, Raymond Conrad, Jim Ballou and Kenneth Puckett.

John Raymond Shelton, 76

    John Raymond Shelton, age 76, of Misty Hollow Road, in Irvine passed away Monday, November 9, 2015 at his home following a long illness.
    He was born May 21, 1939, in Van Buren, Missouri, a son of the late Archibald and Helen Givens Shelton. Mr. Shelton was a track worker with the Southern Railroad and had lived in Estill County for the past 15 years. He was a veteran with the United States Army.
    Mr. Shelton is survived by his wife, Jane Elnora Condon Shelton; two daughters: Kimberly Wyman and Glenora Shelton, both of Michigan; one son, Robert Lee Shelton, Tennessee; two sisters: Patsy Schnider and Gloria Jean Mason, both of Michigan; one brother, Robert Shelton, Utah; several grandchildren and several great grandchildren; and a very special granddaughter, Jade Lynn Wyman.
    He was preceded in death by three sons: Ord William Shelton, Edward Albert Shelton, and Richard Dale Shelton; and two brothers: Tommy Shelton and Howard Shelton.
    Memorial services will be held at a later date at Camp Nelson National Cemetery.

James D. Peterson, 56

    James D. Peterson, age 56, of Bull Valley, Illinois passed away Saturday, November 7, 2015, at Journey Care Hospice, Woodstock, Illinois.
    He was born February 26, 1959 in LaGrange, Illinois, the son of the late Donald and Nellie (Coomer) Peterson. He had lived in Berwyn, Illinois and Lemont, Illinois before settling in Bull Valley ten years ago. Jim proudly served in the United States Navy Seabees and had many interests and hobbies including collecting antiques and guns, shooting, being a range master, cooking and baking (bread), hiking and climbing (including Mt. Everest), motorcycles especially Harley Davidson, John Wayne and other western movies, playing softball and guitar, and he loved dogs, especially Boxers. During his time in college, Jim was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity and he was an avid Green Bay Packers football and University of Kentucky basketball fan as well as a certified SCUBA diver. Jim completed his Master’s degree in Computer Sciences specializing in Systems and Network Security.
    Survivors include his children, Meaghan Peterson of Chicago; and Sean Peterson of Lakewood, Illinois; his brother, Jeff Peterson (Jennifer Boyer) of Ingleside, Illinois; a niece, Nicole, and nephew, Michael.
    A memorial service with military honors was conducted Saturday, November 14th at 1:00 p.m. at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home. Friends called after 12 Noon until service time, Saturday, at the funeral home.

Anna Ruth Richardson, 84

    Anna Ruth Richardson, age 84, of Spout Springs Road in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Sunday, November 8, 2015, at her home following a sudden illness.
    She was born September 15, 1931 in Estill County and was the daughter of the late Lewis and Janie McIntosh Fowler. She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of God. She was active in Relay for Life and had lived in Estill County all of her life.
    Mrs. Richardson was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Joe Richardson.
    She is survived by three daughters: Faye Mullins, Judy Woosley, and Sherri Cole (Clinton), all of Estill County; one son, Ray Richardson (Shelia), Estill County; 18 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren.
    She was preceded in death by one brother, Lewis Cecil Fowler; and one grandson, Jeffery Bailey.
    Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, November 11th at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Sam Miller. Burial will be at the Gray Cemetery. Friends called between 6 and 9 p.m., Tuesday, November 10th at the funeral home.

Patricia Ann Ross

    Patricia Ann Ross, age 68, of Lexington, Kentucky, passed away Friday, November 5, 2015.
    Born March 13, 1947 in Jessamine County, Kentucky, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Eliza Jane Flinchum Mattox.
    Ms. Ross is survived by three daughters: Betty Sue Perkins of Lexington, Nancy (Johnny) Caskey of Millersburg, and Judy Stone of Stanford; five sons: Michael Stone of Frankfort, Matthew Stone, Robert Stone, George Stone (Lisa), and Chester Ross (Lucinda), all of Lexington; six brothers and sisters: Donnie Lamb, Nicholasville; Kathy Lamb, Irvine; Rose Daugherty, Danville; John Dan Flinchum, Woodrow Flinchum, and James W. Flinchum (Connie), all of Irvine; 18 grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren.
    Funeral services were held at 12:30 p.m., Monday, November 9th at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, Harrodsburg Road, Lexington by Minister Ronnie Hupp. Burial followed in Blue Grass Memorial Gardens. Visitation was from 10:30 - 12:30 p.m., Monday, prior to the service.

Det. Daniel Neil Ellis

    Det. Daniel Neil Ellis, age 33, husband of Katie Elizabeth Gruenwald Ellis of Richmond, Kentucky, passed away Friday, November 6, 2015 at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington.
    Daniel was born April 22, 1982 in Taylor County to Kelly and Nancy West Ellis. He graduated from Eastern Kentucky University and was with Law Enforcement for the Richmond Police Department. He was a member of the Madison County F.O.P. Lodge #47, a member of the Kentucky Narcotics Association, the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity and a member of the East End Church of Christ in Lexington.
    Other than his wife Katie and his parents, Daniel is survived by his son, Luke Michael Ellis; two brothers: Jeremy West (Amanda) and Eric Ellis (Heather); one sister, Kelli Marie Ellis Bush (Jason); his paternal grandmother, Clara Ellis Schoenberger; mother and father-in-law, Nancy and Greg Gruenwald; a sister-in-law, Amy Gruenwald Holt (Dylan) and several nieces and nephews.
    Funeral services for Daniel were held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, November 11th at the E.K.U. Alumni Coliseum, with Minister Phillip Shumake officiating. Visitation will be from 2:00 – 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 10th at the E.K.U. Alumni Coliseum.
    Pallbearers were Jeremy West, Eric Ellis, Jason Bush, Justin Moore, Tim Whitlock, Seth Cook, Jordon House and Chip Gray.
    Honorary pallbearers were the Neurosurgical ICU Nurses at the University of Kentucky Hospital and the medical staff at the University of Kentucky and all First Responders everywhere.

Tyler Preston Hughes

    Tyler Preston Hughes, age 18, of Florence, Kentucky, passed away Tuesday, November 3, 2015.
    He was born February 17, 1997 in Kenton County, Kentucky, and was a student at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, a graduate of Dixie Heights High School in Edgewood, and belonged to Kappa Sigma Fraternity at EKU.
    Tyler was preceded in death by his father, Albert Hughes; and his grandmother, Margaret “Poochie” McPeak.
    He is survived by his mother, Tammy Hughes; his aunts: Harriett McPeak and Joy Benedict (Les); and his cousins Brady McMillan and Logan & Benjamin Benedict.
    A memorial service was held at 5:00 p.m., Saturday, November 7th at Stith Funeral Home in Florence, Kentucky. Visitation began at 3:00 p.m. A reception was held after the service at the Clubhouse at Saddlebrook Reserves Condominiums in Florence.

Dewayne Fields, 73

    Dewayne Fields, age 73, of La Grange, Kentucky, passed away November 2, 2015, at the VA Medical Center in Louisville following a short illness.
    He was born October 15, 1942, in Estill County, a son of the late Luther and Opal Eve Fields. He was a truck driver with RNB Carriers and Prego Transportation. He had lived in Estill County for about 25 years and attended the Church of Christ. He was a United States Army Veteran.
    Mr. Fields was preceded in death by his wife, Katherine McKinney Fields.
    He is survived by one son, Jacob Fields, La Grange; one sister, Freida McDowell, Irvine; and one brother, James Fields, Irvine.
    In addition to his wife, he is also preceded in death by two siblings, Faye Rose and Lloyd Fields.
    Private services will be held by Bro. Danny Neal at a later date.

William Carl “Bill” Morefield, 74

    William Carl “Bill” Morefield, age 74, passed away Tuesday, November 3, 2015, at his home following a short illness.
    He was born in Estill County on July 19, 1941, the son of the late William Rodney and Gladys Watson Morefield. He served in the United States Marine Corps. He was the owner/operator of Morefield Mobile Home Movers and a member of the Irvine First Church of God.
    Mr. Morefield is survived by his wife, Glynndenna Muncie Morefield; a son, William Kyle Morefield (Ashley), United States Navy, Dallas Texas; three grandchildren: William Watts, Charlotte Olivia and Anna Paige Morefield; two brothers: Wallace Morefield (Beverly), Waco; and Victor Morefield (Robyn), Richmond; and three sisters: Carol Muncie (Wendell), Stanton; Barbara Cole (Chester Jr.), Irvine; and Brenda Moreland, Berea.
    He was preceded in death by a sister, Yvonne Johnson
    Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, November 6th at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Stanley Hutchinson with burial following in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Friends called between 6 and 9 p.m., Thursday, November 5th at the funeral home.

Ronnie Kelley, 37

    Ronnie Lynn Kelley, age 37, of Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Sunday, November 1, 2015.
    Mr. Kelley was a native of Estill County and a construction worker. He was born September 14, 1978, a son of Frances Angel Hall and the late Earl Kelley.
    He was preceded in death by her brother, Ricky Kelley.
    Survivors include his step-sons: Travis and Stephen Moon; his step-daughter, Misty Lewis; his brothers: Jerry and Earl Ray Kelley; and his sisters: Loretta Kelley and Pam Embry.
    Graveside services were held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, November 6th at the South Irvine Cemetery, officiated by Bro. Butch Arvin.

Harley Glenroy “Bud” Erwin Jr.

    Harley Glenroy “Bud” Erwin Jr., age 59, of Hilliard, Ohio, passed away Sunday, November 1, 2015.
    Bud grew up in Irvine, Kentucky and graduated with the Class of 1975 at Estill County High School. While he excelled in every sport, basketball was his ultimate passion. He received a scholarship to play basketball at Oklahoma's Seminole Junior College. Eventually, he transferred closer to home to Eastern Kentucky University and then Berea College. Afterwards, he served four and a half years as a Corporal in the Kentucky Army National Guard.
    Bud was employed by the United States Postal Service for 16 years as a truck driver and then a mail handler. He spent his free time playing softball, bowling, fishing, hunting, camping, golfing, throwing darts, shooting pool, cooking, and making everyone laugh.
    Everything aside, Bud loved nothing more than his three girls; his wife of 28 years, Gail, and his daughters, Haylee (Dannen D’Arcy) and Hannah. He was preceded in death by his father, Harley and sister, Janet; and survived by his mother, Mary; siblings, Sherrie Wiseman (Mark), Mark, Jonah Estes, and Becky Petty (Charlie); and a large extended family.

    In true Bud spirit, he wanted everyone together to party. Sunday, November 8, 2015 starting at 2 p.m., his friends and family celebrated his life at the VFW Post 4931 located at 2436 Walcutt Rd, Columbus, OH 43228 while wearing UK colors.

Alice Everee Crowe

    Alice Everee Crowe, age 85, of Clay City, Kentucky, passed away on Monday, October 26, 2015 at the Irvine Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
    Born January 29, 1930 in Powell County, she was the daughter of the late Joe and Gracie Patrick Hardy. She was a former factory employee of Curlee Clothing Company and she was a member of Clay City First Church of God.
    In addition to her parents, Mrs. Crowe was also preceded in death by her first husband, Roy Patrick, and by her second husband, Robert Crowe; one son, Alvie Patrick; three brothers: Clell Charles, Otis Charles and Sherill Hardy; and by five sisters: Lola Patrick, Ruth Crowe, Edith Campbell, Glendora Walker and Dolly Gourley.
    She is survived by her son, Ralph Patrick (Sharon); three grandchildren: Bobby Patrick (Jennifer), Jason Patrick and Stacy Linn (Brian), all of Clay City; nine great grandchildren: Kylie Dennis, Karlie Patrick, Maddie Patrick, Kinley Patrick, Taylor Patrick, Abby Patrick, Avery Linn, Jacy Linn, and Coby Linn; and one sister, Beulah Mae Yates of Winchester.
    Funeral services officiated by Dwaine Meadows were held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, October 29th at Hearne Funeral Home, 125 West College Avenue, Stanton. Visitation began at 6:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 28th at the funeral home.
    Interment was in Vaughns Mill Cemetery with Bobby Patrick, Jason Patrick, Brian Linn, Phillip Davis, Billy Joe Bush and Glen Patrick serving as active pallbearers.
    Honorary pallbearers were Dorothy Knox, Jim Frazier, Mike Frazier, Sue McKinney, Buck Bush, Rondal Davis, Brenda Young and employees of the Irvine Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
