Rosa Withers Spencer, 81

    Rosa Withers Spencer, 81, of Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Sunday, April 10, 2016, at the Compassionate Care Center in Richmond, after a short illness.
    She was a native of Estill County, born February 15, 1935, a daughter of the late Rollie and Lillian Harrison Withers. She was a retired employee of the Marcum Wallace Hospital, and a member of the Irvine First Church of God.
    Mrs. Spencer was preceded in death by her husbands, Lionel Allen and C.J. Spencer.
    Survivors include her son, Lionel Garrett Allen; her stepdaugher Linva Lou Powell (Willie); her grandchildren: Samantha, Travis, and Breanna Allen; her stepgrandchildren: Bret, Jane, Jamie, and Jarad Vaughn; her sister, Jean Wilcox (Bill); her great grandchild Shayla Allen; her step-great granddaughter, Zora Bond; her nieces: Debi Baugh, Christina Bledsoe, and Cathy Skinner; and her nephew, Billy Wilcox II.
    Services will be held Wednesday, April 13th at 11:00 a.m., at Lewis Funeral Home with burial following in the West Irvine Cemetery. Friends may call anytime after 6:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 12th at the funeral home.
    Pallbearers will be Travis Allen, Randy Harrison, Glen Hamilton, Kenny Abshear, Bill Wilcox, and Steve Harrison.

Alvah Dennis Overbay, 53

    Alvah Dennis Overbay, age 53, of Mt. Vernon, Kentucky, passed away Friday, April 8, 2016, at the Compassionate Care Center in Richmond, following a long illness.
    He was born December 24, 1962, in Estill County, a son of Bobbie J. Donahue Saylor and the late Roy W. Overbay. Mr. Overbay was a former manager with Bluegrass Plating and had lived in Nicholasville most of his life. He attended the Church of God.
    In addition to his mother, he is also survived by his stepfather, Charles Saylor; three sons: Bobby Overbay, Nicholasville; Marvin Greg McFadden, Georgetown; and Cole Overbay, Michigan; one brother, Larry Overbay, Nicholasville; and two grandchildren: Conner Overbay and Landon Xavier McFadden.
    He was preceded in death by a brother, Roy G. Overbay.
    Funeral services were conducted Monday, April 11th at 1 p.m., at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Donald Estepp II and Bro. Bobby Hale with burial following in the Walton Cemetery. Friends called after 10 a.m., Monday, until service time, at the funeral home.

Jonathan David Winkler, 37

    Jonathan David Winkler, age 37, of Stone Fox Lane, passed away Tuesday, April 5, 2016, at his home after a sudden illness.
    He was born February 18, 1979, in Madison County, a son of Connie Raye Bach Stone and the late Monte Winkler. He was a self-employed construction worker and had lived in Estill County all of his life.
    In addition to his mother, he is also survived by his stepfather, James Stone; his wife, Wendi Ladawn Miller Winkler; a son, Jacob Ryan Winkler, Ravenna; a sister, Alicia Campbell (Daniel), Alabama; three brothers, Jimmy Stone, Ohio; Jessie Stone (Shonna), Irvine; and Christopher Winkler (Lindsay), Alabama; and six nieces and nephews.
    Funeral services were conducted Saturday at 1 p.m., at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Bill Wesley with burial following in the Turpin Cemetery. Friends called after 11 a.m., Saturday, until service time, at the funeral home.
    Pallbearers were Jason Bach, Donnie Jones, Dellie Shuler, Craig Stamper, Thomas Fox, and Mike Hager.

Delpha Jean Hall Todd, 80

Delpha Jean Todd

    Delpha Jean Hall Todd, age 80, was born October 28, 1935 and passed away on April 5, 2016. Born and raised in Estill County, Kentucky, she then lived in West Chester, Ohio, close to 50 years.
    She was the loving wife of Clinton Todd for over 60 years, a mother to Pamela Maurath and Kenneth Todd; a loving grandmother of Jason Maurath and Jennifer Stimmell; and the loving great grandmother of Mackenzie Maurath and Samantha Stimmell; mother-in-law to Don Maurath and Laura Todd; and oldest sister to Nancy Bailey, Anne McCoy, Faye Freeman, Linda Blythe, Brenda Baker, Jimmy Hall, and Gloria Gabbard.
    Mrs. Todd was preceded in death by her mother; Edith Hall; her father, Leslie Hall; one brother, Roger Hall; and a sister, Peggy Bailey.
    She worked at Durkee for over 40 years and was a member of Hopkinsville Church of Christ.
    The visitation was held at Hodapp Funeral home, 8815 Cincinnati Columbus Rd. West Chester, Ohio, on Saturday, April 9th from 9 a.m.-11 a.m. with a service following at 11 a.m.

William Chester Aldridge Jr., 83

    William Chester Aldridge Jr., age 83, of Raven Avenue in Mt. Sterling, Kentucky, passed away Monday, April 4, 2016, at his home following a long illness.
    He was born November 20, 1932, in Jessamine County, a son of the late William Chester Aldridge Sr. and Thelma Lee Montgomery Ingram. He was a former construction supervisor with Wilson’s Leather Company and was a member of the Christian Assembly of God. He was a veteran of the United States Army where he served in the Korean Conflict.
    Mr. Aldridge is survived by his wife, Jewel Dean Flanery Aldridge; two sons: Thomas Lee Aldridge (Mary), Colorado; and William Charles Aldridge (Brenda), Irvine; one sister, Barbara Abney, Lexington; six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
    He was preceded in death by his stepfather who raised him, James Ingram; a stepdaughter, Leslie Carol Lee; and two siblings: Margaret Sparks and Virgil Lee Aldridge.
    Funeral services were conducted Thursday, April 7th at 1 p.m., at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Scott Barnes with burial following in the South Irvine Cemetery. Friends called from 6 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, April 6th at the funeral home.

Darlene Wolfinbarger Childers, 83

    Darlene Wolfinbarger Childers, age 83, died Monday, April 4, 2016 in St. George, Utah.
    She was a native of Estill County, born January 2, 1933, a daughter of the late Otis and Birdia Rose Wolfinbarger.
    Mrs. Childers was preceded in death by her daughter, Reginna Gayle Childersher brothers Otis, Clayton, and Wayne Wolfinbarger; and her sister Irene Charlton.
    Survivors include her children: Jerry Michael Childers (Sherry), Jack Childers (Bonnie), Diane Rader (Dean), and Sharon Gray; her sisters Juanita Steepe, Wilma Cavins, and Peggy Updike; eight grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
    Graveside services were held Monday, April 11th at the Rose & Freeman Cemetery on New Fox Road, with Bro. Scott Rogers officiating.

    A memorial service was scheduled for Thursday, April 7th at Heritage Funeral Home, 237 North 2nd Street in Richmond, Kentucky, for Sylvia Jean Willison Blanton, age 75, of Richmond, who passed away on Monday, March 14, 2016, at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington.
    Mrs. Blanton was a native of Eddyville, a daughter of the late Woodrow Ray Willison and Louisa Oliver. She was a retired waitress.
    Sylvia was a graduate of Lyon County High School in Eddyville, KY. She loved the color purple and was an avid reader who was rarely found without a book in hand. She was a truly amazing woman who loved her daughters and grandchildren very much. She will be greatly missed by many.
    Survivors include her daughters: Debbie Howard (Tommy), Sherry Perdue, and Kelley Hawkins (Dave)Hawkins; grandchildren: Dafanie Butler (Eric), Samantha Minyard, Cedric Fuqua, Sylvia Fuqua, Chanel Fuqua and Walter Minyard; and her niece, Charlotte Turpin.

Michael Dale Chaney, 66

    Michael Dale Chaney, age 66, of Poplar Street in Ravenna, Kentucky, passed away Saturday, April 2, 2016, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Lexington, after a long illness.
    He was born September 23, 1949 in Estill County and was the son of the late Chester Chaney and Ona Barnes Chaney Barnes. He was a United States Army veteran of the Vietnam Era and a member of the American Legion. He was a retired CSX Railroad employee and had lived in Estill County all of his life.
    Mr. Chaney is survived by his wife, Teresa Lynn Puckett Chaney; one son, Christopher Michael Chaney, Estill County; four sisters: Phyllis Tipton, Lola Rose, both of Florida; Carolyn Marcum, Estill County; and Virginia West, Powell County; and three brothers: Jerry Chaney, Steven Chaney and Paul Chaney, all of Estill County.
    He was preceded in death by one brother, Dwight Chaney.
    Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, April 6th at 1 p.m., at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Terry Barnes. Burial was at the Oakdale Cemetery. Friends called between 6 and 9 p.m., Tuesday, April 5th at the funeral home.

    Beverly Thomas Arvin, age 79, of Sandhill Road in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Friday, April 1, 2016, at the Marcum & Wallace Memorial Hospital after a short illness.
    He was born November 21, 1936 in Estill County and was the son of the late Nathaniel Thomas and Bertha Richardson Arvin. He was a former carpet layer, a retired bus driver with the Estill County School System and a current employee of the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Era. He was the pastor of the Wagersville Community Pentecostal Church of God and had lived in Estill County most of his life.
    Mr. Arvin is survived by his wife, Marinda Gilbert Arvin; two daughters: Carolyn Sue Arvin, Richmond; and Judy Combs, Irvine; one daughter-in-law, Charlotte Martin Arvin, Berea; five grandchildren: David Thomas Arvin, Morgan Elizabeth Singleton, Robert Lee Moss, Mekeshia Jordon and Malea Combs; eight great grandchildren: Bentlee, Myna and Colton Singleton, Winter Moss, Cameron Combs, Jesse and Waylon Jordon and William Combs; and his beloved dog, Tater.
    He was preceded in death by his son, David Leon Arvin, five brothers: Millard, Carl, Harrison, Paul and Butler Arvin; and five sisters: Fannie Faye Tipton, Callie Arvin, Alice Lynch and Ellie Arvin.
    Funeral services were conducted Sunday, April 3rd at 2 p.m., at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Phillip Smith. Burial was at the South Irvine Cemetery. Friends called between 6 and 9 p.m., Saturday, April 2nd at the funeral home.

    Ellen Frances Akers Crowe, age 93, of Delong Road in Lexington, Kentucky, passed away Thursday, March 31, 2016, following a long illness.
    She was born February 24, 1923 in Estill County and was the daughter of the late Ed and Ellen Dewie Taylor Akers. She was a homemaker and enjoyed gardening and music. She attended the Baptist Church and had lived in Fayette County most of her life.
    Mrs. Crowe was preceded in death by her husband, Dewey Crowe.
    She is survived by three daughters: Sonja Estes Reece (Riley), Estill County; Patricia Elswick, Nicholasville; and Tina Myers (Bob), Richmond; one son, Dewey Lynn Crowe (Tammy), Nicholasville; two sisters: Margaret Lamb and Peggy Large, both of Tennessee; nine grandchildren: Dennis Estes, David Estes, Willis Estes, Walter Estes, Jeff Maness, Rick Maness, Clint Hill, Leslie Abshear and Tawny Crowe; and several great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren.
    She was preceded in death by one sister, Virginia Dunaway; and four brothers: James, David, Gordon and Hershel Akers.
    Funeral services were conducted Monday, April 4th at 11 a.m. at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was at the James Crowe Cemetery. Friends called between 6 and 9 p.m., Sunday, April 3rd at the funeral home.

    Danville Coffey, 81, widower of Betty Reece Coffey, passed away Wednesday, March 30, 2016, at his residence.
    He was a native of Jackson County, born December 10, 1934, a son of the late Alger and Carrie Cane Coffey. He was a retired employee of Lexington Cut Stone and was of the Baptist Faith.
    Mr. Coffey was preceded in death by his son, David Eugene Coffey.
    Survivors include daughters: Carrie West, Peggy Arvin (Kevin Combs), Polly Roberts (Happy Isaacs), and Ruby Cane; sons: Bobby Coffey (Melissa), Darrell Coffey (Billie), Junior Coffey, Raymond Coffey, and David Coffey; 22 grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.
    Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, April 2nd at Lewis Funeral Home with Bro. Cecil Burns officiating. Burial followed in the Oakdale Cemetery. Friends called anytime after 6:00 p.m., Friday, April 1st at the funeral home.

    Timothy Dale Tuttle, age 48, of Shiloh Road in Clay City, Kentucky, passed away Wednesday, March 30, 2016, at his home.
    He was born July 18, 1967 in Clark County and was the son of Benjamin F. and Sharon L. Spencer Tuttle. He was a former Quality Manufacturing employee and had lived in Estill County most of his life.
    Survivors in addition to his father and mother include his wife, Melissa Faye Rogers Tuttle; two daughters: Tayla Lily Tuttle and Sarah Hope Tuttle, both at home; and two brothers: Frank Tuttle, Estill County; and Jim Tuttle (Becky), Madison County.

    Cecil Brandenburg, age 75, of South Irvine Road, Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Tuesday, March 29, 2016, at the Compassionate Care Center in Richmond, following a short illness.
    He was born March 3, 1941, in Lee County, a son of the late Clarence and Effie McKinney Brandenburg. He was a retired maintenance worker with Bundy Tubing and had lived in Estill County most of his life. He was a member of the South Irvine Church of Christ and a former member of the Estill County Fair Board.
    Mr. Brandenburg is survived by his wife, Wilma Faye Horn Brandenburg, one daughter, Lisa Puckett, Estill County; one son, Danny Brandenburg, Lexington; one sister, Velma Lee Brandenburg, Richmond; two brothers: Charles Brandenburg and Clarence Brandenburg Jr., both of Georgetown; and one grandchild, Megan Michelle Puckett Stepp.
    He was preceded in death by one son, Cecil Dwayne Brandenburg; and two siblings: Betty Jo Patterson and Herman Brandenburg.

    Dodie Marie Cole, age 43, of Spout Springs Road in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Monday, March 28, 2016, at her home.
    She was born April 16, 1972 in Fayetteville, North Carolina and was the daughter of Lillian Ann Hall McCoy and the late Phillip Eugene McCoy. She was a Carhartt, Inc. employee and had lived in Estill County most of her life.
    Mrs. Cole was preceded in death by her husband, Dewey Elden Cole.
    Survivors, in addition to her mother, include one son: Jeremiah Caige Cole, at home; three sisters: Kimberly Kay Rogers, Angela Gaye Johnson, Estill County; and Donna Jean Jones, Bath County; one brother, Phillip Keith McCoy; Estill County; and her in-laws, Dewey & Dean Cole, Estill County.
    She was preceded in death by one son, Malachi Cole; and one brother, Leslie Ray McCoy.

KSP Investigates Escaped Inmate in Estill County

    The Kentucky State Police, Richmond Post 7, is looking for an inmate that escaped from the Estill County Detention Center at approximately 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 5, 2016.
    The initial investigation alleges that Francis N. Stamper, 19 years old of Irvine, escaped from the jail and fled on foot. Several agencies, including the Kentucky State Police, Estill County Sheriff’s Office, Irvine Police Department, and the Estill County Detention Center conducted a search of the area, but were unable to find Stamper.
    She was last seen wearing a green shirt, and black leggings. Stamper is described as being approximately 5'3" tall, weighing 153 pounds, with black hair.
    She was currently lodged for failure to appear on a shoplifting charge.
    Anyone with any information is asked to call KSP Post 7 at 859-623-2404.
    The ongoing investigation is being conducted by Trooper Ken Bradley.

KSP - KSP Conducts a Fire and Death Investigation in Lee County

    (Beattyville, KY) – The Kentucky State Police, Richmond Post was called at approximately 5:06 a.m. EDT, on Tuesday, April 05, 2016, in reference to a multi-family residential structure fire at 255 Country Club Road in Lee County. Investigators learned three people were unaccounted for.
    After an extensive search of the burnt structure three unidentified bodies were recovered. Autopsies are pending with the Kentucky Medical Examiner’s Office. The Kentucky State Police will be performing a DNA test to conclusively determine the identity of the victims.
    The investigation will continue by KSP Investigator Pat Alford. The death investigation is ongoing by Detective Jesse Armstrong.
    Arson is not suspected.

Estill County Public Schools Strategic Plan and Community Partnership Forum

    A community forum on the topics of District Strategic Planning and Community Partnerships will be held on Tuesday, April 12th, 2016, at 6 PM in the Estill County Cooperative Extension Building. The forum is sponsored by the Estill County School District and is designed to strengthen processes and procedures.
    The forum will feature informational speakers who will describe the District Strategic Plan and a panel discussion with professionals from the district offices, building administration and School Board will be available to discuss their duties and responsibilities.
    “My vision for this forum is to engage the entire community to understand the current reality of education and become part of our efforts to ensure a bright future for all of our students,” said Estill County Schools Superintendent Jeff Saylor.
