Laura Belle Coffey, 90

    Laura Belle Coffey, age 90, a resident of Irvine Nursing and Rehab, passed away Friday, April 22, 2016, after a short illness.
    She was born May 24, 1925, in Estill County, a daughter of the late Harlan and Julie Gordon Estes. She was a homemaker and had lived in Estill County all of her life. Mrs. Coffey was a mother and a wife and she attended the Wagersville Pentecostal Holiness Church. She will be sadly missed by family and friends.
    Mrs. Coffey was preceded in death by her husband, James Coffey.
    She is survived by two daughters: Carolyn Rogers (Randall), Irvine; and Betty Willis (Thomas), Madison County; seven sons: Bruce Coffey, Irvine; Dennis Coffey (Sue), Madison County; Wayne Coffey (Carolyn), Mt. Sterling; Leon Coffey, Irvine; Harold Coffey, Wade Coffey (Gail), both of Madison County; and Ernie Coffey (Debbie), Garrard County; a daughter-in-law, Waddette Coffey, Irvine; several grandchildren and great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
    She was preceded in death by one son, Ronnie Coffey; four sisters: Anna May Sams, Delmus Ramsey, Cleona Babb and Alma Murphy; and one grandson, Steven Anthony Coffey.
    Funeral services were held Monday, April 25th at 1:00 p.m., at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Jerry Rose with burial following in the Walton Cemetery. Friends called between 6 and 9 p.m., Sunday, April 24th at the funeral home.
    Pallbearers were Donnie Gordon, Scotty Coffey, Jason Coffey, Edgar Willis, Jordan Coffey and Josh Coffey.

Agnes Ray Isaacs Dixon, 76

    Agnes Ray Isaacs Dixon, age 76, of Trotting Ridge Road in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Friday, Friday, April 22, 2016, at the University of Kentucky Hospital in Lexington, following a short illness.
    She was born December 27, 1939, in Estill County, the daughter of the late Chester Ray and Lillian McKinney Isaacs. She retired from BB&T Bank where she was a loan officer and had lived in Estill County all of her life. She was a member of the Rice Station Christian Church.
    Mrs. Dixon was preceded in death by her husband, James Marvin Dixon.
    She is survived by a daughter, Angie Howell (Steve), Irvine; one brother: Jesse L. Isaacs, Irvine; and two grandchildren: Tyler Howell and Casey Howell.
    Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, April 26th at 11:00 a.m., at the Rice Station Christian Church by Bro. Kirt Scott with burial following in the West Irvine Cemetery. Friends called between 6 and 9 p.m., Monday, April 25th at the funeral home.

Michael Devary, 66

Michael Devary

    Michael Devary, age 66, of Winchester, Kentucky, passed away Friday, April 22, 2016 at the St. Joseph East Hospital in Lexington. He was a retired dog warden in Clark County and a member of the Central Kentucky Coon Hunters Association and the Montgomery County Coon Club.
    He is survived by a son, Bradly Ballard of Winchester; two grandchildren, and one brother, Marcus Devary (Rhonda) of Ravenna.
    Mr. Devary was born February 19, 1950 in Clark County, and he was preceded in death by his parents, William and Dorothy Osborne Devary; and a brother, David Devary.
    Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, April 25th at the Grayson Funeral Home Chapel, 201 7th Avenue, Clay City, with Bro. Chris Williams officiating. Friends visited Monday from 11:00 a.m. until time of the services. Burial was in the Devary Family Cemetery in Trapp.

Harold Ray Hamilton, 90

Harold Ray Hamilton

    Harold Ray Hamilton, 90, husband of Etta Clay Moberly Hamilton, passed away Tuesday, April 19, 2016, at the Marcum Wallace Hospital.
    He was a native of Tampa, Florida, born August 14, 1925; then moving to Irvine when he was four years old. He was the son of the late Jennings Bryan Hamilton and Grace Winn Hamilton. Before retirement he was the owner of Winn's Cleaners. He was a faithful member of the Irvine United Methodist Church of over 85 years. He served as Sunday School Superintendent there for many years. He was the last surviving member of the board that oversaw the purchase of the Aldersgate Camp. He was also an avid fisherman.
    Mr. Hamilton was preceded in death by a brother, Eugene Hamilton.
    Survivors, other than his wife of 68 years, Etta Clay, include his daughters: Susan Hamilton Best (Wayne) of Charleston, South Carolina; and Cynthia Hamilton; his sister, Judy Hamilton Dunn (Bob) of Broussard, Louisiana; his granddaughter, Grace Falconer Gaglione (Mike); and his great grandchildren, Sophia and Isabella Bacchi.
    Services were held Thursday, April 21st at 12:00 Noon at the Irvine United Methodist Church with Bro. Don Hatton officiating. Burial followed in the Richmond Cemetery. Friends called anytime after 10:00 a.m., Thursday, April 21st, until service time, at the church.
    Pallbearers were Anthony Wiseman, Tim Wiseman, Jeff Wiseman, Bill Shelby Wilson, Gordon Edward Wilson, and E.B. Stacy.
    Honorary pallbearers were men of the Irvine Methodist Church; Tom Bonny, Mark Witt, John Witt, Mike Woolery, Gene Scott King, Joey King, Jim Hill, Mark Trimble, Jay Mansfield, Tom Hart, and Robert Tudor.

    Kimberly Dawn Martin, age 42, of Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Saturday, April 16, 2016 at Marcum and Wallace Memorial Hospital.
    She was born August 26, 1973 in Danville, Kentucky, and was the daughter of Lelia Jane Roberts and the late Loyd Earl Martin.
    She is survived by a sister, Reida J. Martin, and a brother, Jerry Lynn Martin.
    A private burial was in Hustonville Cemetery.

Joey Leigh Crowe, 40

    Joey Leigh Townsend Crowe, age 40, of Winchester, Kentucky, passed away Friday, April 15, 2016 at her residence. She was born May 26, 1975 in Estill County and was a homemaker.
    She is survived by one son, Tyler Crowe of Stanton; one brother, Roger Townsend of Georgia; and a sister, Kaye Lowe of Clay City.
    Ms. Crowe was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Bonnie Shimfessel Townsend.
    No services are planned at this time. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Bertha Mae Stewart Mayse, 88

Bertha Mae Mayse

    Bertha Mae Stewart Mayse, age 88, a resident of the Irvine Nursing and Rehab Center, passed away Sunday, April 17, 2016, at the Marcum and Wallace Memorial Hospital, following a short illness.
    She was born March 7, 1928, in Estill County, a daughter of the late Sherman and Pearl Durbin Stewart. She served as the head cook in the Lee County School System for 25 years before retiring. She attended the West Bend Church of God and had lived in Estill County since 1997.
    Mrs. Mayse was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Mayse.
    She is survived by a brother, Charles Stewart, Irvine; three nieces: Lynn Abney (David), Paula McIntosh (Gary) and Adrian Friend (Harold); and a nephew, Nathan Stewart (Shawna).
    Mrs. Mayse was preceded in death by a brother, Otis Stewart; and a niece, Carol Sue Rison.
    She will be greatly missed by many great nieces and nephews and a long list of many friends.
    Funeral services were conducted at 12:00 Noon, Wednesday, April 20th at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. James Combs with burial to follow in the Louge Cemetery in Lee County. Friends called between 6 and 9 p.m., Tuesday, April 19th at the funeral home.
    Pallbearers were Harold Friend, Gary McIntosh, Nathan Stewart, Tyler McIntosh, Jason Brakefield, Justin McIntosh and Josh Stewart David Abney.

Edna Frances Pendergrass, 90

    Edna Frances Pendergrass, age 90, passed away Saturday, April 16, 2016, at the Irvine Nursing and Rehab center.
    She was a native of Estill County, born October 13, 1925, a daughter of the late Brown and Lenna Roberts Pendergrass. She was a member of the Sandhill Christian Church, and a former member of the Mt. Sinai Church.
    Ms. Pendergrass was preceded in death by her brothers: Donald, George, Dudley, Dorsey, and Emil Earl Pendergrass; and her sisters: Winnie Whitaker, Mattie Muncie, and Elizabeth Lane.
    Survivors include several nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.
    Services were held Wednesday, April 20th at 1:00 p.m. at Lewis Funeral Home with Bro. Ron Lutes and Bro. David Bingham officiating. Burial followed in the West Irvine Cemetery. Friends called anytime after 10:00 a.m., until service time, on Wednesday, at the funeral home.

Kelvin Johnson, 48

    Kelvin Johnson, age 48, of Picnic Hill Road in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Thursday, April 14, 2016, at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington, following a short illness.
    He was born November 22, 1967 in Estill County and was the son of the late Hiram and Pauline Mosley Johnson. He was a construction worker and attended the Irvine Free Methodist Church. He had lived in Estill County all of his life.
    Mr. Johnson is survived by one daughter, Kelly Rene Flynn, Estill County, one son,Christopher Johnson, Estill County; five sisters: Della Johnson, Carrie Mullins, Thelma Johnson, Linda Barrett (Gerald), and Faye Williams, all of Estill County; six brothers: Roy Johnson, Powell County; Randy Johnson (Teresa), Donnie Johnson, Donald Johnson, Jesse Wayne Johnson (Rene), and Ray Johnson, Estill County; one grandchild, Orianna Dragoo; and 34 nieces and nephews.
    He was preceded in death by three brothers: James Lester, Larry Dale and Keith Johnson.
    Funeral services were conducted Monday, April 18th at 1:00 p.m., at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Chris Carlye. Burial followed at the Chestnut Stand Cemetery. Friends called between 6 and 9 p.m., Sunday, April 17th at the funeral home.
    Pallbearers were Sam Webb, Jeff Gross, Jimmy Rogers, Scott Stamper, Ronnie Johnson and Gerald Barrett.
    Honorary pallbearers were Frank Johnson, Greg Stamper, Chris Camden and Seth Bowman.

Garnie “Bud” Walters Jr., 86

    Garnie “Bud” Walters Jr., age 86, of Bond Street in Irvine, Krntucky, passed away Thursday, April 14, 2016, at his home following a long illness.
    He was born December 17, 1929 in Estill County and was the son of the late Garnie Walters, Sr. and Fannie Mae Hunt Walters. He was a United States Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and a member of the American Legion. He was a retired Carhartt, Inc. employee.
    Mr. Walters is survived by his wife, Virginia Peters Walters; one sister, Martha Fowler, Irvine; and one brother, Charles “Dobbin” Walters, Irvine.
    He was preceded in death by two sisters: Pauline Ballard and Ethel Stacy; and one brother, Jerry Walters.
    Funeral services were conducted Saturday, April 16th at 1 p.m. at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Rob Steinbrook. Burial was at the West Irvine Cemetery. Friends called after 11 a.m., Saturday, at the funeral home.
    Pallbearers were Tommy Fox, Chancey Fox, Paul Walters, Baylee Fox, David Ratliff and John Sewell.

KSP Arrests Driver Following Injury Collision in Madison County

    The Kentucky State Police, Richmond Post is investigating an injury collision that happened near Charlie Norris Road on Irvine Road (KY-52) in Madison County, just before 5:20 pm today.
    The initial investigation alleges that Dustin M. Brockman, 28 years old of Russell Springs, was traveling East on KY-52 in a 2002 Chevrolet pickup truck, when he collided with six vehicles that were travelling east, including a 2002 Toyota Camry operated by Brenda Smith, 56 years old of Irvine, and a 1994 Chevrolet S-10 operated by Garland Johnson, 61 years old of Irvine. Brenda Smith and Garland Johnson were transported to the University of Kentucky Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. The roadway remained closed while the collision was investigated, and was reopened just after 8:30 pm.
    As a result of the initial investigation, Dustin Brockman was arrested and charged with 2 Counts of Assault 1st degree, 7 Counts of Wanton Endangerment 1st degree, DUI 1st Offense, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Failure to Produce Insurance Card. He has been lodged at the Madison County Detention Center.
    The ongoing investigation is being conducted by Trooper Austin Brashear and Trooper Phillip Powell. They were assisted at the scene by KSP Personnel, Madison County EMS, Madison County Fire & Rescue, and the Richmond Police Department.

Estill Middle Marching Engineers Finish 1st in Class and 1st Overall in St. Louis

Students with 1st Place Middle School Band and 1st Place Overall trophies

    This past weekend, 65 members of the Estill County Middle School 7th/8th Grade Engineers Marching Band traveled to St. Louis, Missouri, for competition.
    On Friday, they visited the St. Louis Zoo, traveled the “Journey to the Top” of the Gateway Arch, and watched the Reds play the Cardinals at Busch Stadium.
    Saturday, the band performed in competition at a local school, then spent the rest of the day at Six Flags St. Louis.
    The ECMS Marching Engineers received first place in their division and were the first place overall band that day, with a superior rating!
    Sunday, before heading home, they visited the City Museum, with caves, climbing, jumping, 10-story slides, and anything else you could imagine.
    The weather was beautiful and it was a wonderful trip overall. Thanks to all who made this trip possible for our students!

    Do you have a child between the ages of 9-15 (must turn 9 before the first day of camp or be entering 4th grade in the fall). Campers do not have to be enrolled in a 4-H Club to attend summer camp....now that I have your attention, Here's the details
