Harry LaViers Jr.

Harry LaViers Jr., age 86 of Lexington, Kentucky; surrounded by his family, passed from this life peacefully on June 23, 2016 after a 12 year battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.
Born August 26, 1929 in Paintsville, Kentucky to Harry LaViers II and Maxie Auxier LaViers, he was the inseparable husband of Sue (Purple) LaViers for 63 years.

Entering the United States Army, as a SGT, he worked connecting many independent residential telephone lines to multiple high powered radar-directed computer controlled anti-aircraft guns to create networks of protective circles in the airspace around Washington D.C. and other USA east coast cities.
In 1954 Harry completed his tour of duty and he and Sue returned to Paintsville where he began working with his father at South East Coal Company
In 1958, Harry expanded South East Coal Company, building several new mines in Letcher County, and built a coal cleaning plant in Irvine, Kentucky that created jobs in Eastern Kentucky. On completion in 1961 it was the largest coal preparation plant in the United States. In 1980 this preparation plant became the first fully computer controlled coal cleaning plant in the world, using custom software and IBM computers; winning recognition from the US Department of Energy.

Harry believed that knowledge was a shared gift to mankind, and stressed this at home and at work. If you asked Harry a question on any technical matter, you always got far more information than you expected. At South East Coal Company, Harry created a unique college scholarship program for the employees’ children. Eventually more than 180 students graduated from college by 1990 having been financed by these scholarships.
