2016 Kentucky State Champions -- The Estill County Marching Engineers
The Estill County Engineers Marching Band -- 2106 Kentucky State Champions
Back to Back! The Estill County Engineers Marching Band has done it again.
Estill won its second straight state championship of the Kentucky Music Educators Association State Marching Band Championships over the weekend in Louisville.
And, in the same fashion as last year, Estill come from behind after trailing in the semi-finals to Garrard County.
The Marching Engineers defeated three other semi-finalists including Garrard County in the finals at Papa Johns Stadium.
Estill finished with an 82.3, well ahead of Garrard County and Washington County who each finished with a 78.4. Hart County finished 4th overall with a 73.75. The four teams picked for finals competition at Papa Johns came from among 16 bands that participated in semi-finals competition at Christian Academy of Louisville (CAL).
Last year, the Estill County Marching Engineers Band finished second to Garrard County in semi-finals and this year the Golden Lions were the top semi-finalist again at CAL with 90.65. Estill came in second in semi-finals with 89.55.
But the Marching Engineers came “marching back” to take their second straight state championship. Garrard finished second both years.
Estill finished first in four categories (Musical Performance 2, Musical Effect, Visual Performance 1 and Visual Effect ) and second in the other two categories (Musical Performance 1 and Visual Performance 2).
The Marching Engineers had finished second in 2014 behind Garrard County. The Engineers previously had finished in 5th place in 2013.
