Mary Edith Shuler, 83

    Mary Edith Shuler, age 83, a resident of the Irvine Nursing & Rehabilitation Center passed away Sunday, February 12, 2017, at the Compassionate Care Center in Richmond, following a long illness.
    She was born May 14, 1933 in Powell County and was the daughter of the late Algin and Alice Wright Wasson. She was a homemaker and a member of the Mt. Carmel Christian Church.
    Mrs. Shuler was preceded in death by her husband, Elery Shuler.
    She is survived by two daughters: Betty Shuler, Irvine; and Wanda Lynch (David), Ravenna; one son, Lloyd Shuler (Sandra), Irvine; three brothers: Junior Wasson, Berea; John Wasson, Waco; and Oscar Wasson, Richmond; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
    She was preceded in death by four sisters: Josephine Wasson, Mae Adams, Beulah Wasson and Aleen Wasson; and two brothers: Clay and Bert Wasson.
    Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, February 15, 1 p.m., at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Mark Pearson and Bro. Terry Barnes. Burial will be at the Crowe Cemetery. Friends may call between 6 and 9 p.m., Tuesday, February 14th at the funeral home.
    Pallbearers will be Lloyd Shuler, Oscar Wasson, Junior Wasson, John Lynch, Daniel Shuler and Daniel Burton.
    Honorary pallbearer will be Gary Wasson.

Bernice “Niecey” Smith, 65

    Bernice “Niecey” Smith, age 65, of Highway 89 in McKee, Kentucky, passed away Friday, February 10, 2017, at her home following a short illness.
    She was born November 17, 1951, in Jackson County, a daughter of Mary D. Smith and the late Farris D. Smith. She was a member of the Drip Rock Baptist Church and had lived in Jackson County all of her life. She enjoyed reading her bible.
    Ms. Smith is survived by three sisters: Mildred Richardson, Estill County; Bonnie Wilson and Jewel Isaacs, both of Jackson County; two brothers: Anthony Smith and Glenn Smith, both of Jackson County; and a host of nieces and nephews.
    She was preceded in death by five siblings: Porshia A. Smith, Deanna Smith, Bruce Smith, Cecil Smith, and Cleaborn Smith.
    Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, February 12, 1 p.m., at the Drip Rock Baptist Church by Bro. Keith Carr and Bro. Darrell Isaacs with burial to follow in the Sparkman Cemetery. Friends may call between 6 and 9 p.m., Monday, February 13th at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home and after 12 Noon, Tuesday, at the church.

James "Paul" Barker, 87

    James "Paul" Barker, age 87, widower of Ula Horn Barker, passed away Tuesday, February 7, 2017 at the VA Medical Center in Lexington.
    A native of Estill County, born July 14, 1929, he was the son of the late Jim and Millie Farthing Barker. He was an United States Army veteran and former member of the American Legion, and he enjoyed hunting, fishing and the outdoors.
    Mr. Barker was preceded in death by his brother, Silas Barker.
    Survivors include his sons, James Barker (Barbara) and Jerry Barker; daughters, Wanda Cochran (Bill), Anna Catherine Smith (Joey) and Millie Hollingsworth; 11 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
    Services will be held on Friday, February 10th at 1:00 p.m. at the Lewis-Abner Home for Funerals with Bro. Scott Rogers officiating. Burial will follow in the Campbell Cemetery. Friends may call anytime after 11:00 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home.
    Serving as pallbearers will be Jimmy Barker, Ronnie Barker, Ray Combs, Joey Smith, Bill Cochran, and Josh Barker.

Ronnie Dale Estes, 43

    Ronnie Dale Estes, 43, of Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Tuesday, February 7, 2017, at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington.
    A native of Estill County, born August 16, 1973, he was the son of the late Charles Estes and Bonnie "Darlene" Freeman Estes.
    Mr. Estes was preceded in death by his aunts, Carly Baker and Patty Freeman; and an uncle, Junior Estes.
    He enjoyed his life. He enjoyed sports, hunting, fishing, and having cookouts.
    Mr. Estes is survived by his mother, Bonnie "Darlene" Estes; uncles, Bobby Freeman, Paul Freeman, and Bud Freeman (Rhonda); aunts, Lula Sewell, Corena Steinmetz, Carrie Jo Sewell, Anna Walters, Emma Dennis, and Jean Estes; and many cousins.
    Services will be held on Monday, February 13th at 2:00 p.m. at the Bethel Christian Church in Fox with Bro. Linville Dunaway officiating. Burial will follow in the Rose & Freeman Cemetery. Friends may call anytime after 11:00 a.m. on Monday at the church.

Lucille Jamison Canter, 81

    Lucille Jamison Canter, age 81, of Elm Street in Ravenna, Kentucky, passed away Monday, February 6, 2017, at the Springview Hospital following a long illness. She was born January 29, 1936 in Elwood, Indiana and was the daughter of the late Jesse and Mary McKinney Jamison. She was a former Standard Products employee and a member of the First Baptist Church. She had lived in Estill County most of her life.
    She is survived by her husband, Lenvil G. Canter; one son, Rick Canter (Jean), Ft. Wayne, Indiana; one sister, Lavenda Jo Canter, Irvine; one brother, Gayle Jamison, Ohio; two grandchildren: Paul Veltum and Glen Veltum; and five great grandchildren: Mikaela Veltum, Corbin Veltum, Luke Veltum, Sarah Whitley and Rachel Whitley.
    Mrs. Canter was preceded in death by one daughter, Teresa Canter; and several brothers and sisters.
    Funeral services were conducted Monday, February 13, 11 a.m., at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Sherl Thomas. Burial was at the Cobb Hill Cemetery. Friends called after 10 a.m., Monday, at the funeral home.

Ezell Rogers, 80

    Ezell Rogers, age 80, of Sandhill Road in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Monday, February 6, 2017, at her home following a sudden illness.
    She was born May 19, 1936 in Estill County and was the daughter of the late Nathan and Pearl Estes Isaacs. She was a former employee of the A.L. Williams Insurance Company and had lived in Estill County most of her life.
    Ms. Rogers is survived by two daughters: Rhonda Mansfield, Estill County; and Shannan Rae Rogers, Dayton, Ohio; one son, Harlan B. Angel Jr., Kettering, Ohio; six sisters: Irene Rucker, Cletta Harris, Berma Newton, Estill County; Malvie Martin, Ohio; Mary Alice Mays, Lee County; and Bernice Page, Fayette County; seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
    She was preceded in death by two daughters: Wanda Angel and Baby Rogers; three sisters: Anonia Daniels, Ethel Chaney and Viola Alcorn; and two brothers: Perry and Elwood Messer.
    Funeral services were conducted Friday, February 10, 1 p.m., at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Delvin Reece. Burial was at the Riverview Cemetery. Friends called after 11 a.m., Friday, at the funeral home.

Marsha Lynn Huddleston-Holmes

    Marsha Lynn Huddleston-Holmes age 67 of Readyville, Tennessee; passed away Saturday February 4, 2017 from an extended illness at St Thomas Rutherford hospital. Marsha was a native of Irvine, Kentucky.
    Survivors include her husband of 46 years, Richard W. Holmes of Readyville, TN; sons: Douglas Holmes (Jennifer) of Beech Grove, TN; and Brett Holmes (Faye) of Auburntown, TN; a daughter, Erika Holmes (Rich Cook) of Murfreesboro, TN; grandchildren: Ashley Sparks (Ryan March), Joshua Holmes, Emily Sparks and Kaitlyn Sparks; mother, Geneva Huddleston; sister, Tina Campbell (Greg), all of Woodbury, TN; nieces: Sarah Bailey (Sean Studd) and Esther Bobo (BJ); great niece and nephew: Brandon Bailey and Jada Bobo; special lifetime friend Dolores Zawadski (Joe) of Cookeville, TN; and several aunts and uncles.
    Marsha was preceded in death by her father, Douglas Huddleston; and brother, Terry Huddleston.
    She was a member of the Daughters of the Revolution and a retired Lab Technician and homemaker. Marsha loved to travel and she so loved the beach. She was always a supporter for animal rescue organizations and leaves behind her beloved dogs Sadie, Zephyr, Lily, and Molly. She was an avid reader and mostly loved to spend time with her family. Marsha was a very special Grandma to her grandchildren. She always had a smile for you no matter the circumstance. She will be greatly missed by her friends, family and fur babies.
    In lieu of flowers, contributions to some of her favorite organizations are requested by the family.

    Sam Flinchum, age 88, passed away Wednesday, February 1, 2017.
    A native of Estill County, he was born August 9, 1928 to the late Dave and Berta Groves Flinchum.
    He is survived by his children, Lydia Couch and Sam Flinchum Jr., both of Lancaster, Kentucky, as well as many extended family members and friends.

Geatta Faye Reffett, 79

    Geatta Faye Reffett, age 79, widow of David Reffett, Yellow Pine Road, Clay City, Kentucky, passed away Wednesday, February 1, 2017 at Select Specialty Hospital in Lexington.
    Born in Clay City, she was the daughter of the late Jesse Hisle and the late Fannie Gladys Hall Hisle. Geatta was a former factory employee of Parker Seale.
    In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Henry Hisle Jr. and Ray Rowland; a brother-in-law, Boyd Childers; three sisters, Minnie Marie Harrell, Effie Francis Henry and Maddie Mae Sieberkrob; along with two grandchildren, Jason Davis and Gary Banks Jr.
    She is survived by her son John Reffett (Beverly Patton) of Clay City; two daughters, Sandy Davis (James) and Christiana Banks, both of Winchester; one brother, Verlon Rowland of Irvine (Shirley); a brother-in-law, David Sieberkrob; three sisters, Nettie Childers of Clay City, Juanita McCuddy (T. J.) of Stanton and Barbara Booth (Wayne) of Clay City; a sister-in-law, Delores Lynn Rowland of Irvine; five grandchildren, Jamie Davis, Jeremy Davis (Chasta), Brittany Banks (Nathan Toth), Janetta Reffett and Christy Leeann Camel; along with two great grandchildren, Drew and Jaxon Davis.
    Funeral services officiated by Bro. Mitchell McIntyre were held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, February 5, at Hearne Funeral Home, Inc., 125 West College Avenue, Stanton. Visitation begins at 5:00 p.m., Saturday, February 4th at the funeral home. Burial was in Kennon Cemetery with Jamie Davis, Jace Byers, Jeremy Davis, Nathan Toth, Teddy Henry, Eric Sieberkrob and Johnathan Townsend serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Faye and Riley Tipton, Henrietta Smyth and Patsy Rudder.

Primary League Schedules Make-Up Games

     The Estill County Primary League has scheduled make-up games for those cancelled in early January because of inclement weather. The League has also scheduled post-season conference tournaments for the six upper division leagues.
        Thursday we have 3-2/3 grade Boys games and 1-2/3 grade girls game and exceptional kids.

Whooping Cough Cases In Estill County Are Now Confirmed at 25

     Twenty-two cases of whooping cough have been confirmed among students in the Estill County School System with three cases in non-students.
     West Irvine Elementary has the most cases with 15. There are two each at Estill Springs and the high school. South Irvine Pre-K Center now has three cases.

KSP Investigates Officer Involved Shooting

     Kentucky State Police is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred on General Nelson Drive in Madison County at approximately 9:05 p.m. Tuesday night, February 7, 2017.
     The initial investigation indicates that the Kentucky State Police, Richmond Post was called at approximately 8:50 p.m. in reference to a domestic disturbance that was taking place at a residence on General Nelson Drive. As KSP arrived on scene the trooper exited his vehicle and located the man that was allegedly involved in the disturbance in a vehicle.
     The ongoing investigation alleges that the suspect then drove his truck directly at the trooper, at which time shots were fired, injuring the suspect. First aid was administered at the scene, and the suspect was transported to the University of Kentucky Hospital in Lexington with life-threatening injuries.
     The KSP Trooper was not injured in the incident, and the identities of the trooper and suspect have not been released at this time.
     The ongoing investigation is being conducted by the KSP Critical Incident Response Branch. They were assisted at the scene by KSP Personnel, Madison County Sheriff’s Office, and Madison County EMS.

KSP Investigates Fatal Collision in Lincoln

     The Kentucky State Police, Richmond Post was called just before 8:30 this morning in reference to a fatal collision that occurred on KY HWY-78 in Lincoln County.
     The initial investigation indicates that Jamie M. Harrison, 43 years old of Stanford, KY, was driving east on HWY-78 in a 1994 Chevrolet Pickup Truck. Jamie Harrison lost control of his vehicle, causing it to travel off the roadway and overturn in a field. As a result of the collision, the driver’s wife, Bobbie J. Harrison, 40 years old of Stanford, and their 15 year old daughter were ejected from the vehicle. All three occupants were transported to the University of Kentucky Hospital with life-threatening injuries. Bobbie Harrison died as a result of her injuries and was pronounced deceased by the Fayette County Coroner upon her arrival to UK Hospital.
     The ongoing investigation is being conducted by KSP Trooper Chris Damron. He was assisted at the scene by KSP Personnel, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, Lincoln County EMS, and Lincoln County Fire & Rescue.

Traffic Stop Leads To Drug Trafficking Arrest

     Kentucky State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officer Erik Stallsworth conducted a traffic stop on a Nissan passenger car on Turpin Drive in Richmond on Tuesday, January 31, 2017. After receiving consent to search the vehicle from the operator, a brown purse was located in the passenger floor board. Kristy N. Whitaker, a passenger in the vehicle from Berea, KY, stated the purse belonged to her and could possibly contain some marijuana. After searching the purse, Officer Stallsworth located two small plastics bags containing possible marijuana, seven small plastics bags containing possible methamphetamine, five used syringes, two cutoff straws, and a set of digital scales. Whitaker was placed under arrest, lodged in the Madison County Detention Center and charged with the following: 1) Trafficking in a controlled substance 1st degree 1st offense (Methamphetamine), 2) Possession of marijuana, and 3) Drug paraphernalia (buy/possess).
