Marie Hobbs Smith, 85
Marie Hobbs Smith, age 85, of Ticky Fork Drive in Ravenna, Kentucky, passed away Friday, February 24, 2017, at the University of Kentucky Hospital in Lexington, following a short illness.
She was born May 31, 1931, in Estill County, the daughter of the late Sherman and Carrie Miller Dixon. She was a homemaker and had lived in Estill County all of her life. She attended the Rice Station Christian Church and the Estill County Senior Citizens Center.
Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by two husbands: Bill Smith and Herbert Hobbs.
She is survived by four daughters: Anita Marcum, Estill County; Mildred Moore, Madison County; Janice Flynn and Cheryl Embs, both of Estill County; two sons: James Hobbs and Ricky Hobbs, both of Estill County; a brother, Odell Dixon, Madison County; 12 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Doug Hobbs; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, February 28th at 1 p.m., at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Kirk Scott with burial following in the Marcum Cemetery. Friends called after 11 a.m., Tuesday, until service time, at the funeral home.

David Linville Tuttle, age 81, of Nicholasville, Kentucky, formerly of Winchester, passed away peacefully, Friday, February 24, 2017, at Central Baptist Hospital, Lexington, surrounded by family.
David was born February 13, 1936 in Spouts Spring, Kentucky, to the late David Redwine and Jennie Prewitt Tuttle of Irvine. David spent the last 26 years married to Annette Tuttle, whom he loved and adored until the day he passed. He served in the Kentucky State National Guard and United States Air Force: Airman Second Class Policeman from 1954-1958.
David was extremely proud of his children: David R. Tuttle, Kim Daniels (Mike), both of Winchester; Jeffrey L. Tuttle (Marsha) of Mt. Sterling, Gregory Tuttle (Delilah), Jonathan Tuttle (Jennifer), all of Winchester; and Paige Graves (Michael) of Middletown, Ohio.
In addition to his children, he is survived by one step-son, 10 grandchildren, five great grandchildren, many step-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Harold Edward Stover; and a sister, Gertrude Atcher.
Services were at 12:00 Noon on Monday, February 27th by Pastor Paul Hollingsworth at Scobee Funeral Home, 219 West Lexington Avenue, Winchester. Full military honors were held at West Irvine Cemetery. Visitation was from 10:00 a.m. until time of service on Monday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers were his sons and grandsons.
Honorary pallbearers were Randell and Danny Townsend and Mike Atcher.

Dewey Elden Cole, age 76, husband of Geraldine Crowe Cole, passed away Thursday, February 23, 2017 at his home, surrounded by his loving family.
Dewey was a native of Cincinnati, Ohio; born October 22, 1940, a son of the late Dewey and Lillian Rader Cole. He was a retired carpenter and painter. He was a talented musician and a member of the Primitive Baptist Church of Richmond.
Mr. Cole was preceded in death by his son, Dewey Elden Cole Jr.; his daugher-in-law, Dodie Cole; his brother, Alvis Lee Rader; and his grandson, Malachi Cole.
Survivors, other than his loving wife of 56 years, Geraldine; include his daughters: Kimberly Von Chaney Blackwell, Eldina Lynn Howe, and Lorri Dawn Cornett (Jerry); his sisters: Patricia Barnes, Linda Willoughby (Keith), Janice Anderson (Lawrence), Sheila Scrivner (Dwight), Movetta Hall (Roger), Eshia Johnson (Doug), and Sandy Holland; his brothers: Denzil Cole (Jan), and Michael Cole (Debra); his grandchildren Chris Conrad, Jerry Von Chaney, Nikki Chaney, Meagan Brewer, Alex Brewer, Trystan McGee, and Caige Cole; his great-grandchildren: Emmylia Lainhart, Jonah Conrad, Ansleigh Conrad, Josiah Conrad, Kyler Arvin, MaKynslie Arvin, McKyree Arvin, Gunner Chaney, Asher Chaney, and Reagan Chaney; many many nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.
Services were held 2:30 p.m., Sunday, February 26th at Lewis-Abner Home for Funerals with Bro. Jerry Chaney officiating. Burial followed in the Oakdale Cemetery. Friends called anytime after 6:00 p.m., Saturday, February 25th at the funeral home.
Pallbearers were Christopher Conrad, Jerry Chaney, Alex Brewer, Seth Lainhart, Dustin Arvin, and Rodney Hall.
Honorary pallbearers were his sons-in-law, brothers, and brothers-in-law.

Shauna Nicole Turpin Doughtery, age 45, wife of Steve Doughtery, passed away Wednesday, February 22, 2017, at Marcum and Wallace Hospital in Irvine, Kentucky.
A native of Estill County, born September 3, 1971, she was the daughter of Elmo Wayne and Nancy Popp Turpin. She was a loving mother and wonderful sister who loved helping others and truly had a heart for being nice.
Survivors are her husband, Steve Doughtery; a son, Casey Doughtery; mother- and father-in-law, Dale and Jim Doughtery; sisters: Kim Turpin Rose and Melissa McNierney; nieces and nephews: Maddix and Jerieka Waterbeck, Isabella Wasson, Kyla Dyer, Dakota and Hannah McNierney, and Jordon and Peyton Rose.
Memorial services were held at the House of Prayer on Sunday, February 26th at 2 p.m.
Dolores Puckett Gross
Dolores Puckett Gross departed this life, onto a better life on Wednesday, February 22, 2017.
She was born March 14, 1925, the daughter of the late Alva and Nettie Patton Puckett and the widow of Odell Gross to whom she was married for 66 wonderful years.
She was a 1951 graduate of Wesleyan College and a former teacher in the Clark County School System having taught at Victory Heights, Becknerville and Hannah McClure Schools. She later worked as a secretary at Odell Gross Elementary School before retiring in 1977. She was a member of the Christian Women's Fellowship at First Christian Church where she and husband Odell were members since 1959.
Mrs. Gross was predeceased by five brothers and three sisters.
She is survived by three nieces, two nephews and several great nieces and nephews.
Services were at 11:00 a.m., Friday, February 24th at Scobee Funeral Home by Pastor Jerry Johns. Burial followed in Winchester Cemetery. Visitation was from 10:00 a.m., Friday, until time of service at the funeral home.

Mary Elizabeth Murphy, 61
Mary Elizabeth Murphy, age 61, of Low Gap Road in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Tuesday, February 21, 2017, at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington, following a short illness.
She was born January 23, 1956 in Woodford County and was the daughter of Beulah Grace Lane Creech and the late Ishmel Creech. She was a caregiver and attended the Old Time Baptist Church. She had lived in Estill County most of her life.
Survivors, in addition to her mother, include her husband, Donnie Ray Murphy; one daughter, Joannie Hope Cook, Scott County; one son, Jimmy Ray Murphy, Estill County; one sister, Ellen Lorena Clem, Montgomery County; one brother, David Lee Creech, Estill County; and three grandchildren: Aaron Ray Richardson, Wyatt Christopher Cook, and Dominique Alexandria Torres-Murphy
She was preceded in death by a sister, Juanita Faye Creech; and a brother, George Edward Creech.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, February 25, 11 a.m., at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Jerry Chaney. Burial was at the Lane Cemetery in Wolfe County. Friends called between 6 and 9 p.m., Friday, February 24th at the funeral home.

Fannie Cassie Arvin, 87
Fannie Cassie Arvin, age 87, a resident of the Irvine Nursing & Rehabilitation Center passed away Sunday, February 19, 2017, at the Center following a long illness.
She was born April 23, 1929 in Estill County and was the daughter of the late Carlie Barnes Sr. and Maude Wood Barnes. She was a homemaker and a member of the Providence Baptist Church. She had lived in Estill County all of her life.
Mrs. Arvin was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Arvin Sr.
She is survived by four sons: Carl Arvin, Jr. (Shirley), Richmond; Ralph Arvin (Debbie), Berea; Darrell Arvin (Robin), Mt. Vernon; and David Arvin (Tina), Irvine; two daughters-in-law: Mary Arvin, Madison County; and Diana Arvin, California; one sister, Irene Barnes, Irvine; 17 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Kenneth & Gary Arvin; one sister, Lorene Rose; and two brothers: Carlie Barnes Jr. and John Barnes.

Lois Virginia Barnes Walker, 90
Lois Virginia Barnes Walker, age 90, of Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Friday, February 17, 2017 at the Marcum Wallace Hospital, following a sudden illness.
Virginia was born January 14, 1927 in Estill County, a daughter of the late Hood and Flora Hamilton Barnes. She spent many years as a teacher and administrator for the Estill County School System. She was a member of the Estill County Woman's Club, enjoyed playing Rook, and was known far and wide for her baking. She was a member of the Sandhill Christian Church.
Mrs. Walker was preceded in death by her husband, Bob Walker; and three brothers, Esco, Oakley and Howard Barnes.
She is survived by her sister, Joyce Combs of New Orleans; two nephews: John and Keith Combs; and her great niece, Candace Combs.
Friends called 1:00-3:00 p.m., Monday, February 20th at Lewis-Abner Home for Funerals. Private services and interment will follow at a later date.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested memorial donations to the Marcum-Wallace Hospital.
Edna Colvin-Hisle-Taylor, 81

Edna Colvin-Hisle-Taylor received her heavenly wings on Thursday, February 16, 2017 at the age of 81.
She was born in Buhl, Alabama on November 18, 1935, the oldest child of six children of the late Bradie and Ola Mae (Jordan) Colvin. She accepted Jesus Christ at an early age and joined Mt. Enon Missionary Baptist Church in 2014.
Edna earned her Sociology degree and teaching licensure from Kentucky State University in 1956 and studied education courses at Morehead and Pikeville Colleges. She taught at Palmer Dunbar.
Edna became a trailblazer during integration transition, serving as the first African American teacher at Wheelwright High. After 12 years of teaching she become one of 32 African Americans chosen nationwide for an administrators training program with the U.S. Agriculture Stabilization Conservation Services, later renamed Farm Service Agency.
Also preceding her in death, a son, Derrick Baskin who died on January 2, 2012; sisters, Ruth and Birdie; a brother, Vincent; and husbands, Arch Hisle and Walter Taylor.
Edna leaves to cherish her memories; brother, Brady Colvin Jr. of Vacaville, California; sisters, Yvonne Marvin (Willie) of Trotwood, Ohio; Sheila Robinson of Elizabeth, New Jersey; and Nicole Neal, Covington, Kentucky; her niece and caregiver, Karen Hunt of Washington Township, Ohio; a special cousin, Arthur Watford of Richmond, Kentucky; and special friends Julie Kavanagh, Larry Hisle Sr., Greg Jackson, Carolyn Stacy, Nelle Williams, Tim & Rhonda Gould and James & Opal Witt, all of Irvine and Richmond; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Memorial Service were held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, February 22, 2017, at Mt. Enon Missionary Baptist Church, 1501 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Way, Dayton, Ohio; with Rev. Corey Pruitt officiating. Visitation one hour prior to service.

Hazel Wagers Lamb, 93
Hazel Wagers Lamb, age 93, widow of George Brock Lamb, passed away Wednesday, February 15, 2017, at the Owsley County Health Care Center in Booneville, Kentucky.
She was a native of Estill County, born December 28, 1923, a daughter of the late Charles And Nettie Lucy Cox Wagers. Mrs. Lamb was a retired nurse, working for 45 years at the Marcum Wallace Hospital and the former Pattie A. Clay Hospital. She was a member of the Rice Station Christian Church for over 65 years. She enjoyed doing volunteer work for various organizations in Estill County.
Mrs. Lamb was preceded in death by her son, George Brock Lamb Jr.
Survivors include her son, Tony Lamb (Sandra Kaye); her grandchildren: Jeffery Scott Lamb, Tonya Ellen Lamb, and Eric Keith Lamb; her great grandchildren: Haley Lee Ann Lamb and Weston Keith Lamb; and special nieces, Trena Linders and Martina Garrison.
Services were held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, February 17th at Lewis-Abner Home for Funerals with Larry Deckard officiating. Burial followed in the Sunset Memorial Gardens. Friends called anytime after 12:00 Noon, Friday, until service time, at the funeral home.

Charles Wayne Lowe, age 61, passed away Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at the Stanton Health and Rehab Center.
He was a native of Estill County, born July 19, 1955, a son of the late Walter Lowe and the late Elsie Horn Lowe Oliver. Charles was a proud University of Kentucky Wildcats fan, Kyle Busch’s #1 fan, a member of Estill County V.F.W, enjoyed the outdoors and loved dogs.
Mr. Lowe was preceded in death by his grandparents, Henry and Rebecca Puckett Horn; his parents, Walter Lowe and Elsie Horn Lowe Oliver; his aunts: Carol Sue Brewer and Hazel Tipton; and his uncles: Travis Horn, Harold Horn, Charles Horn, Floyd Horn, and Stanley Trimble.
Survivors include his sister, Debbie Hammonds (Tracy); his aunts: Lorene Trimble, Norma Horn, Joyce Clemons (Don), Naomi Horn, and Kay Horn; his uncle, Austin Brewer; his nephew, Chase Hammonds; many cousins; his special friends Sam & Sharon Scott, Andy & Marty Stapleton and daughters Jessica and Hannah; Ashley Hatton & Sarge; Clark Abney; and a host of many, many other friends.

Stanley Newman, age 76, of Franklin County, Kentucky, passed from this life on Wednesday, February 15, 2017, after a hard-fought battle with cancer.
Services were held at Harrod Brothers Funeral Home, 312 Washington Street, Frankfort, on Monday, February 20, at 11:30 a.m. with Rev. Esther Sapp. Burial followed at Landrum Cemetery in London, Kentucky. Visitation was held at Harrod Brothers Funeral Home from 9:00 a.m. until service time on Monday.
Stan was born in Estill, County on February 26, 1940, to the late Everett Newman and Opal Stevens Newman Reece. He was united in marriage to his wife, Betty Ruth Rooney Newman, who preceded him in death. He retired from the National and Jim Beam Distillers. He was known as an excellent neighbor and friend to those in his community.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his children, Stanley Ray Newman, Everett Wayne Newman; and twins, Jeffrey Newman and Charlene Newman; his siblings, Roger Neece, Norma Elliott and Molly “Peaches” Harp.
He is survived by his daughter, Susan Marie Newman of Richmond; his siblings, Billy Newman (Pat) of Frankfort, Jeanette Herman McKinney of Camden, Ohio; Danny Hoover (Wilma) and Bobby Hoover, both of Irvine; his grandchildren, Alexis Newman, Mandrea Newman and Kyle Wayne Newman; several nieces and nephews; a special niece and nephew, Karen Newman and Terry McKinney; and his special friend, Rena Bartlett. He was also blessed with his beloved canine companion, Koda.

Phillip Dean Worrell, age 64, of Maupin Hill Road in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Wednesday, February 15, 2017, at the University of Kentucky Hospital in Lexington, following a long illness.
He was born January 13, 1953, in Madison County, the son of the late Douglas and Edith Gordon Worrell. He was an assembly line worker with Hyster-Yale and had lived in Estill County all of his life. He was a member of Bass Masters.
Mr. Worrell is survived by his wife, Teresa Arthur Worrell; two daughters: Stacey Elaine Worrell, Estill County; and April Michelle Easter, Madison County; a sister, Joyce Puckett, Estill County; three grandchildren: Tanner Blake Chaney, Emily LeeAnn Emmons and Savanna Nicole Puckett; and an honorary son, Shane Hurst.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Sheila Henry

Jackie Dean Begley, 54, of Irvine, Kentucky, died Saturday, February 11, 2017 of natural causes.
He was a native of Estill County, born December 23, 1962, a son of the late Roscoe and Betty Reed Begley.
Mr. Begley was preceded in death by his sisters, Vickie Marie Tipton and Wanda Lee Begley; and his brother, Danny Begley.
If anyone knew Jack they knew how kind hearted he was and how he would give the shirt off his back and walk an extra mile to help you. If you were a friend, you knew you were loved, if you were a stranger, he would give you the shoes off his feet and walk away bare footed. This is the kind of man that we've lost.
Survivors include his brother, Ronnie Begley (Sheila); his sister, Becky Puckett (Greg); and his self-adopted son, Jeremiah Johnson. He's also survived by many great family and friends who will miss and treasure the memories they had with him.
There was a gathering of friends at 5:00 p.m., Thursday, February 16th at Lewis-Abner Home for Funerals, with a memorial service beginning at 6:00 p.m.
Marcus Wayne Thacker, 78
Marcus Wayne Thacker, age 78, of Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Saturday, February 11, 2017 at the Hospice Compassionate Care Center in Richmond.
A native of Buchanan Virginia, born October 10, 1938, he was the son of the late Lillian Newkirk Thacker Barnes.
Mr. Thacker was preceded in death by his brothers, Hoy Gayle, John Wesley, Harold Edward, and James Roscoe Thacker.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Sue Hatfield Thacker; sons, Marcus Thacker Jr. (Donna), Hoyvan Thacker (Teresa), and Jesse Taylor Thacker (Sandy Melton); a daughter, Matewood Thacker Kortbein; six grandchildren, Marcus Thacker III, Jessica D. Thacker (Michael), Michael A. Thacker, Jason Taylor Thacker, Dylan Joseph Kortbein, and Gavin Martin Thacker; and several nieces and nephews.
Marcus was an avid outdoorsman and was a buyer of medicinal herbs and ginseng for the last 15 years.
There are no services planned at this time. The family will hold a private memorial service at a later date.

KSP Locates Missing Madison County Girl in Indiana

The Kentucky State Police, Richmond Post confirmed on Saturday, February 25, 2017, that Mikayla R. Wolney, 16 years old of Berea, was located unharmed this afternoon in Indiana, and is being transported back to Kentucky.
KSP Post 7 was called Friday evening and informed that Mikayla R. Wolney, 16 years old of Berea, did not return home from school. The initial investigation indicated that Mikayla was last seen at approximately 8:00 a.m., Friday morning when she got off the bus at Madison Southern High School. She was last seen wearing a white Madison Southern shirt and skinny blue jeans. Mikayla is described being 5’ 7” tall, 206 pounds, with black hair and blue eyes. She also has gauges in both ears, a small piercing in the top of her left ear, as well as a lip and nose piercing.
The investigation was conducted by KSP Post 7 Trooper John Northern.
KSP Investigates Officer Involved Shooting
The suspect in an officer-involved shooting on Wednesday, February 8, 2017, has died.
The Kentucky State Police has confirmed that Kenneth B. Huntzinger, 51 years old of Richmond, succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the University of Kentucky Hospital on the evening of Thursday, February 16th. He was taken to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Frankfort for an autopsy.
The initial investigation indicated that the Kentucky State Police, Richmond Post was called at approximately 8:50 p.m., Wednesday, February 8th in reference to a domestic disturbance that was taking place at a residence on General Nelson Drive. As KSP arrived on scene the trooper exited his vehicle, and located the man that was allegedly involved in the disturbance in a vehicle.
The ongoing investigation alleges that the suspect then drove his truck directly at the trooper, at which time shots were fired, injuring the suspect. First aid was administered at the scene, and the suspect was transported to the University of Kentucky Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Kentucky State Police Sergeant Toby Coyle was the only officer involved in the shooting and was not injured. Sgt. Coyle is a 16-year veteran of KSP, and is currently assigned to KSP Post 7 in Richmond. In accordance with KSP Policy, Sgt. Coyle has been placed on paid administrative leave.
The ongoing investigation is being conducted by the KSP Critical Incident Response Team. They were assisted at the scene by KSP Personnel, Madison County Sheriff’s Office, and Madison County EMS.
KSP Investigates Fatal Collision in Lincoln
The Kentucky State Police, Richmond Post was called just before 8:30 this morning in reference to a fatal collision that occurred on KY HWY-78 in Lincoln County.
The initial investigation indicates that Jamie M. Harrison, 43 years old of Stanford, KY, was driving east on HWY-78 in a 1994 Chevrolet Pickup Truck. Jamie Harrison lost control of his vehicle, causing it to travel off the roadway and overturn in a field. As a result of the collision, the driver’s wife, Bobbie J. Harrison, 40 years old of Stanford, and their 15 year old daughter were ejected from the vehicle. All three occupants were transported to the University of Kentucky Hospital with life-threatening injuries. Bobbie Harrison died as a result of her injuries and was pronounced deceased by the Fayette County Coroner upon her arrival to UK Hospital.
The ongoing investigation is being conducted by KSP Trooper Chris Damron. He was assisted at the scene by KSP Personnel, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, Lincoln County EMS, and Lincoln County Fire & Rescue.
Traffic Stop Leads To Drug Trafficking Arrest
Kentucky State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officer Erik Stallsworth conducted a traffic stop on a Nissan passenger car on Turpin Drive in Richmond on Tuesday, January 31, 2017. After receiving consent to search the vehicle from the operator, a brown purse was located in the passenger floor board. Kristy N. Whitaker, a passenger in the vehicle from Berea, KY, stated the purse belonged to her and could possibly contain some marijuana. After searching the purse, Officer Stallsworth located two small plastics bags containing possible marijuana, seven small plastics bags containing possible methamphetamine, five used syringes, two cutoff straws, and a set of digital scales. Whitaker was placed under arrest, lodged in the Madison County Detention Center and charged with the following: 1) Trafficking in a controlled substance 1st degree 1st offense (Methamphetamine), 2) Possession of marijuana, and 3) Drug paraphernalia (buy/possess).
