Blood donors help Kentucky patients

Blood transfusions are needed by many Kentuckians. Cancer patients, for instance, often require blood transfusions to help rebuild their blood supply during cancer treatments. Trauma patients need blood immediately to get them stable. Those with blood disorders like sick cell anemia may also require transfusions, and organ transplants and other surgeries can’t happen unless blood is readily available.
These Kentucky patients depend on the generosity of blood donors to support them on their road to recovery.
Area donors are invited to give so others may live at the upcoming Kentucky Blood Center (KBC) blood drive:

Estill County Community
Sat., March 11 from 8 am - 1 pm
at the First Christian Church in the Fellowship Hall
at 270 Main Street in Irvine.

Everyone who registers to donate will receive a short-sleeve gray T-shirt. Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments can be made by calling 800.775-2522, ext. 3758.
Blood donors must be 17-years-old (16 with parental consent), weigh at least 110 pounds, be in general good health, show a photo I.D. and meet additional requirements. Sixteen-year-old donors must have a signed parental permission slip, which can be found at kybloodcenter.org.
     About Kentucky Blood Center
Founded nearly 50 years ago, Kentucky Blood Center is the largest independent, full-service, non-profit blood center in Kentucky. Licensed by the FDA, KBC’s sole purpose is to collect, process and distribute blood for patients in Kentucky hospitals.
All blood that is donated with KBC is returned to the Beaumont Donor Center where it is processed, prepared and stored for shipment to Kentucky hospitals.
Blood needs are ongoing. Red cells last only 42 days and must be continually replenished to adequately support Kentucky hospitals. Statistics show that one in seven hospital patients will require blood transfusions during their stay. However, only 37 percent of the population is eligible to donate blood and less than 10 percent does. All blood types are needed, and there is a particular need for type O negative blood since it is the “universal donor” and needed in emergencies when the patient’s blood type is unknown. The blood already on the shelf is the blood used in an emergency. That’s why KBC is always encouraging people to donate blood.

Strong Winds Damage City of Ravenna

Cleanup began on Thursday, March 2, 2017, one day after strong winds caused by a storm front that raced through Kentucky, Wednesday morning, March 1, 2017, caused thousands of dollars in damages to the twin cities of Irvine and Ravenna in south-central Kentucky.
Only 110 residents are still without power, reports Melissa A. Jessie, Public Information Officer, Estill County EMA/CSEPP, in an evening report on Thursday.
Wednesday evening, Jessie reported that an estimated 20 houses were destroyed with more than 75 damaged. Two injuries were confirmed, both non-life threatening.
"We started damage assessments today (Thursday) and will continue those," said Jessie. "We ask that any Estill County resident that has damage to their property to please contact our office (723-6533) and let us know. We need to document everything.
"Clean-up teams will be out tomorrow to assist residents with debris removal. If you have already started clean-up move debris to the curb and crews will pick it up tomorrow. If you live out in the county and need assistance with debris removal please call our office at 723-6533 or message us on fb so we can send a crew to you.
"If you want volunteer with a clean-up crew please meet at the Ravenna National Guard Armory between 10am and 2pm to be assigned to a crew.
"We want to thank everyone for all their hard work and the outpouring of support for our community during this difficult time."
A Donation Drop Off Center is now open 10am-8pm at Christian Worship Center located at 105 Broadway Street in Irvine. Items requested include toiletries (toothpaste, toothbrushes, toilet paper, soap, shampoo, deodorant) cleaning supplies (gloves, bleach, mops, brooms, rakes), bottled water; snack foods (peanut butter crackers, cheese crackers, pop tarts); and plastic totes for residents that have lost their homes to pack their belongings.
"Please DO NOT bring clothing," says Jessie. "Helping Hands Ministry has plenty of clothes if they are needed at this time."
Anyone can donate cash now to the Red Cross online at Donate Now!. The minimum donation is $10.
Some residents believed it was a tornado that ripped the roofs off of several homes and businesses and brought down trees and power lines. Weather service officials are now saying damage was from straight-line winds reported to be 90-100 miles per hour in Estill County.
Police and rescue units cordoned off much of the city on Wednesday; especially the Main Street area, and were rerouting traffic through other streets. A section of Kirkland Avenue in Irvine known as the "Old Pike" was also closed.
One of the harder hit buildings appeared to be the Barnes Sanitation garage on 8th Street where garbage trucks were repaired. Some of its roof and walls were damaged and parts of the roof from a neighboring building had landed on Barnes' roof.
A lot of the rescue activity appeared to be in the Chamberlain Branch area of eastern Irvine where power crews were securing downed lines.
Gary McClanahan owns a building which houses "Austin's" on Main Street. He had recently put up a wall that enclosed a lot next door to the business. Part of that wall lay on the ground.
However, McClanahan believed the heaviest damaged building was "Cody's," a building owned by former Ravenna mayor Beverly Thompson and the family of the late Cody Thompson which housed several apartments.
The roof of that three-story building and a portion of a wall lay next to the building on 7th Street.
Nearby Oakdale Cemetery in East Irvine had a huge tree displaced in the middle of it.
Damages were extensive in the eastern part of Irvine, and Pizza Hut and Wendy's in West Irvine both had damages to their roof.
Two injuries are known at this time and an ambulance was seen backed up to a residence in the eastern part of Ravenna.
Much of the parts of Ravenna hit by Wednesday's strong winds was destroyed by a tornado in the 1960's and some residents thought this might be a tornado as well.
Jessie said, "We are asking people stay away from the 500 Block of Broadway thru 7th Street in Ravenna. This is a heavily damaged area. You will be asked to provide identification to enter the area."
