Alphie Gross Tipton, 91


Alphie Gross Tipton

    Alphie Gross Tipton, 91, of Boone Drive in Richmond, and formerly of Estill County, died Monday, January 22, 2018 at the University of Kentucky Hospital in Lexington, in Hospice Care.
    She was born on September 13, 1926 in Estill County, and was the daughter of the late Sam and Gracie Crawford Gross. Mrs. Tipton was a homemaker and seamstress. She loved to cook, garden, and work in her flowers. She was a member of Tates Creek Baptist Church.
    Mrs. Tipton was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Eugene Tipton, who died in 2010, as well as six brothers, Finley Gross, Dosh Gross, Ralph “Doeg” Gross, Durb “Earville” Gross, Clyde Gross, and Bill Gross; and five sisters, Nettie Wilburn, Mary Townsend, Stella Townsend, Margie Marshall, and Jean Powell.
    Survivors include: one son, Donnie Tipton (Nora), of Willisburg; one daughter, Phyllis Burton (Rodney) of Richmond; four grandchildren, Kimberly Clemenson Webster (Jeff) of Carmel Valley, California; Bryan Tipton (Melissa) of Nicholasville; Tracy Rhodus and David Burton (Trina), both of Richmond; three great grandchildren, Haylee King, Madisyn Hurst, and Caleb Stone, all of Richmond; and numerous nieces and nephews.
    Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, January 26, 2018 at Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home, 1110 Barnes Mill Road, Richmond, with Rev. Jerry Huffman officiating. Burial will follow in the Richmond Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-9 p.m. on Thursday, January 25, 2018 at the funeral home.
    Pallbearers will be Bryan Tipton, Ronnie Gross, Kenny Marshall, Glenn Berger, Stanford Jones, Henry Gross, Terry Rice, and David Burton.
    Honorary pallbearers will be Eva Jones, Teresa Marshall, Rachel Hill, and Rodney Burton.

Patricia Louise Henry, 69

    Patricia Louise Henry, age 69, of South Hudson Avenue in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Sunday, January 21, 2018, at the Baptist Health in Lexington following a long illness.
    She was born May 4, 1948 in Estill County and was the daughter of the late Jake and Lillie Neal Wiseman. She was a homemaker and had lived in Estill County all her life.
    Ms. Henry is survived by two daughters: Sondra Stallings (Michael), Estill County; and Kristy Henry (Benny), Arkansas; two sons: James Snowden (Randy) amd Zachary Henry (Emma), both of Lexington; two sisters: Norma Hall, Madison County; and Margie Cahal, Estill County; two brothers: J. B. Wiseman, Estill County; and Donald Wiseman, Madison County; four grandchildren: Emma Carson Turpin, Lennon Abney, Corey LeMaster and Tyler LeMaster; and one great grandchild, Brennon Willis.
    She was preceded in death by one son, Jeremiah Henry; and one sister, Betty Tipton.
    Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, January 25, 1 p.m., at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Scott Rogers. Burial will be at the Sunset Memorial Gardens. Friends may call between 6 and 9 p.m., Wednesday, January 24th at the funeral home.

Gary Hardy, 62

    Gary Hardy, age 62, of Stacy Lane Road in Irvine, passed away Saturday, January 20, 2018, at his home, following a long illness.
    He was born July 15, 1955, in Estill County, a son of Pairelee Johnson Hardy and the late Leon Hardy. He had lived in Estill County all his life.
    Survivors in addition to his mother include his wife of 36 years, Serena Cain Hardy; four daughters: Sheri Grace (Ezekiel), Angela Tipton, Laura Cockrell, all of Estill County; and Renee Chipps (James), Lexington; two sons: Daniel Ross (Mary) Jackson County; and Glenn Cockrell (Mary), Estill County; a sister, Maggie Oliver, Estill County; four brothers: Donald Hardy (Gail), Orville Hardy (Penny), Cecil Hardy (Selena), and James Hardy (Cheryl), all of Estill County; 13 grandchildren, several nieces and nephews; and several friends.
    He was preceded in death a brother, Bobby Hardy.
    Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, January 23, 1 p.m., at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Kevin Phillips with burial following in the Hardy Cemetery. Friends called after 11 a.m., Tuesday, until service time, at the funeral home.
    Pallbearers were Darrell Spicer Jr., Christopher Epperson, Kevin Hardy, Masco Grace, Zeke Grace, and Joseph Marcum.

Nancy Johnson Wilson, 95


Nancy Johnson Wilson

    Nancy Johnson Wilson, age 95, of Versailles Road in Frankfort, Kentucky, widow of Maurice June Wilson, passed away Thursday, January 11, 2018, following a brief illness.
    She was born January 14, 1922, in Estill County, the daughter of the late Jim and Minnie Crowe Johnson. She was a retired seamstress and floor lady at Ashland Craft. After living with her husband in Ashland for over 50 years, she moved to be with her daughters in Frankfort upon his passing in 2007.
    While living in Frankfort, Nancy devoted her considerable energy and generosity to the Capital City Senior Activity Center. For nearly 10 years, she offered seamstress services to the community with all proceeds being donated to support the operations of the Center. They estimated her total donated earnings reached nearly $100,000., all used to support critical elderly services such as Meals on Wheels. She received several citations and awards for her volunteer work, including being named the DIAL 2015 Kentucky Volunteer of the Year.
    Nancy was a long-time quilter and fabric artist. She called herself the "Appalachian Rag Painter," and many of her quilts and wall hangings were displayed around the state. Her fabric creations brought joy to many, and she was rewarded with ribbons and prizes, including two at the Kentucky State Fair.
    Nancy died just three days shy of her 96th birthday. She lived long, was happy, and was much loved. She spent her last evening having her favorite cherry pie at "Free Pie Wednesday" with family and friends, closing out the remainder of the night tapping her toes to Bluegrass music on KET. She passed quickly, painlessly, and with each hand held by a daughter who loved her.
    Mrs. Wilson was preceded in death by her husband, Maurice Wilson; and her son, Jerry Lynn Wilson.
    She is survived by two daughters: Wanda June Eastman and Ginny Wilson (Bronwyn Miller), both of Frankfort; a daughter-in-law, Mary Wilson or Rush; two granddaughters: Robin Jessee and Heather Walker; two great grandchildren: Brett Jessee and Chelsea Walker; and two great, great grandsons: Kalab Owens and Klatyon Sutherland. Special friends were Kaye Triplett, Lynn Medina, Dottie Dunlap, and Hasmukh and Surekha Patel.
    Visitation was on Thursday, January 18, 5-7 p.m., at the Rogers Funeral Home in Frankfort. A burial service and visitation were conducted Friday, January 19, 1 p.m., at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel in Irvine.
    In lieu of flowers, she requested that donations be made in her memory to either the Capital City Senior Activity Center or the Franklin County Humane Society.

Bobby L. Rose, 83

    Bobby L. Rose, age 83, of Drowning Creek Ridge in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Tuesday, January 16, 2018, at the Marcum & Wallace Memorial Hospital following a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.
    He was born January 28, 1934 in Estill County and was the son of the late Farris and Rebecca Richardson Rose. He was a paralegal, a former County Judge and a retired teacher with the Estill County School System. He was a member of the Providence Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon for 50 years and a member of the Irvine-Ravenna Kiwanis Club. He was retired from the United States Army Reserves where he served for 23 years.
    Mr. Rose was preceded in death by his wife, Lorene Barnes Rose.
    He is survived by one son, Mark L. Rose, Irvine; one grandchild, Amber Rose Marcum (Joseph), one great grandchild, Hagen Joe Marcum; and one expected great grandchild.
    Mr. Rose was preceded in death by two brothers, Farris Dean Rose and Roderic F. Rose.
    Funeral services were conducted Friday, January 19, 11 a.m., at the Providence Baptist Church by Bro. Ronald Lutes and Bro. Bill VanWinkle. Burial was at the Turpin Cemetery. Friends called between 6 and 9 p.m., Thursday, January 18th at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home.
    Military rites were performed by the American Legion Post 79.
    Pallbearers were Mike Barnes, Ralph Arvin, Roderic Rose Jr., Jerry Rose, Dan Rose, Shawn Rose, Steve Garrett, Richard Snowden, and Joseph Marcum.
    Honorary pallbearer was Jackie Tipton.

Glenna Dean Stevens, 59

    Glenna Dean Stevens, age 59, of Leighton Road in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Sunday, January 14, 2018, at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington.
    She was born July 14, 1958 in Irvine and was the daughter of the late Charles W. and Joyce Oveda Puckett Stevens. She had attended the Barnes Mountain Baptist Church where she was baptized, and she enjoyed watching WLJC. She had lived in Estill County all her life.
    Ms. Stevens is survived by two sisters: Virginia Faye Stevens and Wilma Jean Stevens, both of Irvine; two brothers: Darrell Lee Stevens and Lander Stevens, both of Irvine; and several nieces and nephews.
    She was preceded in death by one sister, Carol Stevens McKinney; and two brothers: Dale Stevens and Charles Stevens, Jr.
    Funeral services were conducted Thursday, January 18, 1 p.m., at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Adrian McKinney. Burial was at the Stevens Cemetery. Friends called after 11 a.m., Thursday, at the funeral home.
    Pallbearers were Shane Puckett, Jacob Stevens, Michael Stevens, Phillip Stevens, Roy Stevens and John McKinney.

    Nicklas Warren Spurgeon, age 26, of Richmond, Kentucky, passed away on Friday, January 12, 2018 in Richmond.
    He was born July 11, 1991 in Winchester.
    He is survived by his parents, Charles and Sandra (Herald) Sea of Irvine; one brother, Marcus Clay Spurgeon of Richmond; maternal grandparents, Ray and Myrtle Herald of Talbert, Kentucky and a host of other relatives and friends.
    Funeral services were held on Monday, January 15, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at Deaton Funeral Home Chapel, 15 Deaton Lane, Jackson, Kentucky, with Jesse Turner officiating. Burial was in the Sharon Herald Cemetery at Talbert. There was no visitation prior to the funeral service.

    Todd Randell Robinson, age 54, of Tipton Ridge Road in Ravenna, Kentucky, passed away Thursday, January 11, 2018, at the Marcum & Wallace Memorial Hospital after a sudden illness.
    He was born April 26, 1963 in Cincinnati, Ohio and was the son of Julia Tuggle Robinson and the late Robert Robinson, Jr. He was a retired employee of the Kentucky Department of Transportation and was a member of the American Legion and the VFW. He had lived in Estill County most of his life.
    Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife, Regina Adams Robinson; and one son, Zachary Todd Robinson, Estill County.
    Funeral services were conducted Monday, January 15, 2 p.m. at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Terry Barnes. Burial was at the Gray Cemetery. Friends called after 12 Noon, Monday, at the funeral home.

Mary Ann Cline

    Mary Ann Cline, age 71, a resident of the Irvine, Kentucky, Health & Rehabilitation Center passed away Wednesday, January 10, 2018, at the Center following a long illness.
    She was born May 10, 1946 in Clark County and was the daughter of the late James White and Ann Abner White Boston. She was a former employee of Sylvania and attended the Methodist Church. She also served as a member of the Irvine Health & Rehabilitation Center Council
    Ms. Cline had lived in Clark County most of her life.
    She is survived by one daughter: Edieann Ingram (Nathan), Clark County; one son, Anthony White (Lourdes) Houston, Texas; and one grandchild, Kinsey Haddix.
    Ms. Cline was preceded in death by three brothers: James, Arthur & Gilbert White.
    Funeral services were conducted Saturday, January 13, 1 p.m., at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Scott Rogers. Burial was at the Oakdale Cemetery. Friends called after 11 a.m., Saturday at the funeral home.

    Alma C. Fowler, age 71, of McKee Road in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Wednesday, January 10, 2018, at the Compassionate Care Center in Richmond, following a long illness.
    She was born September 2, 1946 in Estill County and was the daughter of the late Lafette and Lana Arvin Smith. She was a former employee of St. Joseph Hospital and had lived in Estill County most of her life.
    Mrs. Fowler was preceded in death by her husbands, David Cain and Stanley Fowler.
    She is survived by one daughter, Jeannie Burkhead, Scott County; four sons: Shannon Fred Cain, Estill County; Ronnie Cain, Madison County; David Cain, Franklin County; and Victor Cain, Estill County; one sister, Wilma Harris, Fayette County; two brothers: Curvin Smith, Woodford County; and Eldon Smith, Estill County; several grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
    She was preceded in death by one sister, Anna Smith.

Charlotte Faye Harrison-Rachford, 75

    Charlotte Faye Harrison-Rachford, 75, died on January 10, 2018 at the University of Louisville Hospital.
    She was born in Estill County on December 12, 1942 to Beulah Woosley and Elmer Lee Harrison. Charlotte was loved by many and enjoyed being surrounded by family, friends and her dog Mitzi. She found peace in the company of her loved ones and her faith in God. She was a natural caregiver and loved being a grand-mother more than anything. She was an Honorary Kentucky Colonel and a licensed massage therapist which she did up until she became ill. She attended Calvary Christian Church. She is survived by one daughter, Sharon Lane (Russell); three sons: Keith Barnes (Rosemary), Jeffrey Barnes (Lisa) and Jason Epperson (Elizabeth); one stepson, Anthony White (Loredus); 10 grandsons, Jake Barnes (Kelly), Josh Barnes (Jessica) , Erik Barnes, Brandon White (Casey), Corey Cox, Jacob Taulbee, Kevin Jarrell (Caitlin), Isaiah Epperson, Noah Epperson, and Gunner Brock; four granddaughters, Lindsey Borders, Samantha Landrum, Hartlee Epperson and Piper Brock; eight great grandsons, Jaden Nein, Bayne Barnes, Deegan Hager, Brantley White, Andrew Jarrell, Nickolas Jarrell, Johnnie Stanley and Keyonte Back; five great granddaughters Skylar Barnes, Madison Edge, Bristol Borders, Brayleigh Borders and Holly Jarrell; three brothers, Dallas Harrison, Darrell Harrison and Lloyd Harrison; three sisters, Loretta Stacy, Nettie Wiseman, and Ruby Webb; three stepsisters, Judith Acres, Robin Woosley, and Betty Holbrook; two stepbrothers, David Holbrook and Bona Holbrook; with many cousins, nieces and nephews.
    She was preceded in death by her mother and father.
    Visitation and funeral services were held on Friday, January 12th, at 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 Noon at Calvary Christian Church in Winchester, with Pastor Lee Cruse officiating. The funeral immediately followed the visitation. Burial was private in White Oak Cemetery.
    Pallbearers included: Jake Barnes, Josh Barnes, Brandon White, Corey Cox, Erik Barnes, Andy Wiseman.
    The family would like to extend gratitude to everyone who has surrounded them during this difficult time.

    Buel McIntosh, age 69, of 6th Street in Ravenna, Kentucky, passed away Wednesday, January 10, 2018, at his home following a long illness.
    He was born December 6, 1948 in Seymore, Indiana and was the son of the late Lonzo and Mary Dee Stamper McIntosh. He was retired from IMU and had lived in Estill County all his life.
    Mr. McIntosh is survived by two sisters: Agnes McIntosh and Nellie McIntosh, both of Estill County; and several nieces and nephews.
    He was preceded in death by two sisters: Magdalene Dunaway and Ruth Dunaway; and two brothers: Cornelius and Larson McIntosh.
    Funeral services were conducted Sunday, January 14, 2 p.m., at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was at the West Irvine Cemetery. Friends called after 12 Noon, Sunday, at the funeral home.

Velma Dean Powell

    Velma Dean Powell, age 72, the daughter of Lonnie Nelson and Ella Kathryn Rogers Marcum, was born on June 14, 1947 in Estill County, Kentucky, and passed away on Tuesday, January 9, 2018, at her residence in Ragley, Louisiana.
    She was preceded in death by her parents.
    She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Gayle Powell of Ragley; one brother, Orval Dale Marcum; three sisters: Lydia Mae Marcum Patrick, Vivian Carol Marcum Ciferri and Marilyn Joyce Marcum Townsend; and a host of nieces and nephews.
    Funeral services for Velma were held Friday, January 12, at the Texas Avenue Baptist Church in DeRidder with Rev. Lindsey Burns officiating. Burial followed in the Central Louisiana Veterans Cemetery, under the direction of Labby Memorial Funeral Home of DeRidder. Visitation was held on Thursday, January 11, from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
    There will be a memorial service in remembrance of Velma Powell and her brother, Dewey Marcum, who died in 2017, on February 11th at the Powell County Lions Club Park in Stanton from 12 Noon until 6 p.m. All friends and family are invited to attend. We ask that you bring a covered dish and non-alcoholic drinks as well as your memories and stories. This will be a celebration of life gathering.

    Patsy Lynn Riddell Neal, age 63, of Richmond Road in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Monday, January 8, 2018 at the Marcum and Wallace Memorial Hospital, following a short illness.
    She was born October 8, 1954, in Madison County, a daughter of the late Orlan and Cletta Stone Riddell. She was a homemaker and had lived in Estill County all her life.
    Mrs. Neal was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Ray Neal.
    She is survived by four daughters: Tonya Neal (Danny), Donea Barnes (Mark), Regina Neal (Danny), and Kristin Neal (Kevin), all of Estill County; a son, Gregory Neal, (Sarah), Estill County; two sisters: Dianne Reynolds (Lonnie) and Sheala Fields, both of Estill County; 11 grandchildren: Cory, Nathan, MaKayla, McKenna, Andrew, Bryson, Shyann, Peyton, Parker, Sierra, and Zakariah; and a special friend, Jeanene Neal.
    She was preceded in death by two sons: Brandon Scott Neal and Brian Ray Neal; and a brother, Michael Leon Riddell.

    Elke Schmitz, age 67, of Winkler Cemetery Road in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Sunday, January 7, 2018, at her home, following a long illness.
    She was born May 1, 1950, in Munich, Germany, a daughter of the late Wolfgang and Erica Danb?ck Schmitz. She retired as a professional cleaner and had lived in Estill County most of her life.
    Ms. Schmitz is survived by a brother, Rueider Schmitz, Germany.
    Memorial services were held at a later date.

Vivian Lois Hamilton

    Vivian Lois Hamilton, age 83, of Richmond, Kentucky, widow of Mr. James Edward “Jimmy Hambone” Hamilton (died 2004), passed away on Tuesday, January 2, 2018, at the ARH Hospital in Hazard.
    She was born on September 12, 1934 to the late Clelton and Pearl Martin Ferrell. Mrs. Hamilton was a graduate of Harlan High School as well as Cumberland College and Eastern Kentucky University. She was a school teacher for many years in the Madison, Harlan and Estill County School systems as well as the Middletown, Ohio School System. She was a volunteer with Hospice and a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Richmond.
    Survivors include her daughter, Patty Sorrell (Larry); her grandchildren, Nicole Hudson and James Sorrell; one sister, Margaret Johnson; as well as a host of other extended family and friends.
    A memorial service was conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 6, 2018, at the Calvary Baptist Church, 343 Big Hill Ave., Richmond, with Pastor Bobby Greene officiating.

Bernice Lorraine Case, 74

    Bernice Lorraine Case, age 74, of Englewood, Florida, passed away Tuesday, December 19, 2017 at her Charlotte County residence.
    Born on August 4, 1943 in New Bedford, Massachusetts to the late William and Mildred (Rosa) Jones, she had been a resident of Englewood for one year, coming from East Freetown, Massachusetts.
    A loving wife, mother and home maker for her family she was a Hospice Volunteer whose interests included reading a traveling.
    She is survived by her husband of thirteen years, Willie H. Case of Englewood, a native of Cob Hill, Estill County, Kentucky; two stepdaughters: Sheryl Ann LaBlanc of New Bedford, Massachusetts and Lesley Souza of Rochester, Massachusetts; four sisters: Patricia Pimental of Dartmouth, Massachusetts; Mildred LaFerriere of New Bedford, Massachusetts; Marjorie Santiago of Holmes Beach, Florida; and Brenda Hathaway of Sommerville, Florida; four grandchildren and one great grandson.
    Englewood Community Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Englewood, Florida, has been selected to handle arrangements.
