James E. “Tuffy” Benton, 88

    James E. “Tuffy” Benton, age 88, of Richmond Road in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Saturday, February 3, 2018, at his home, following a long illness.
    He was born July 25, 1929, in Estill County, a son of the late Joe and Barsha Roberts Benton. He worked in the Signal Department with CSX Railroad and had lived in Estill County all his life. He was a member of the Williams Memorial Baptist Church, Friends of the Bluegrass, and the Estill County Golf Club. He was a Veteran of the United States Navy and was an avid University of Kentucky fan.
    Mr. Benton is survived by one daughter, Barbara Ann McDole (Tony), Bedford; one like a son, Bill Lynch, Estill County; three sisters: Bertha Jo Newton, Bessie Gray, both of Madison County; and Joyce Davis, Indiana; three brothers: Ronnie Benton, Donnie Benton, and Doug Benton, all of Estill County; four grandchildren: Beth Campbell (Steve), Katlyn Haggard, Jeremiah McDole (Michelle), and Rachel Mahoney (Jon); nine great grandchildren: Lindon, Levi, Benton, Anna Beth, Kyra Lee, Ronen, Jon, Jackson, and Haley; and several nieces and nephews.
    He was preceded in death by two siblings: Midge Barnes and Milford Benton.
    Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, February 7, 1:00 p.m., at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Chris Winkler with burial following in the Roberts Cemetery. Friends called between 6 and 9 p.m., Tuesday, February 6th at the funeral home.
    Pallbearers will be Mark Benton, Ricky Joe Benton, Steve Honchell, Anthony Haggard, Steve Campbell, Joe Benton.
     Honorary pallbearers will be Chris Lynch, Joe Yeager, Tony McDole, Larry Honchell, Mark Honchell, and Jim Benton.

Lorene Sparks Adams, 93

    Lorene Sparks Adams, 93, of Richmond, Kentucky, passed away Friday, February 2, 2018 at the Compassionate Care Center.
    Mrs. Adams, the daughter of Johnnie Sparks and Ida Mae Horn Sparks, was born in Estill County on July 21, 1924. She was co-owner of Adams Furniture Store. Her greatest joys in life included playing the piano, gardening, caring for her birds and especially all of her grandchildren. She was a member of Old Paris Road Church of God where she had served as pianist.
    On June 14, 1941, Mrs. Adams united in marriage to Carl T. Adams who preceded her in death on December 24, 2000.
    She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law: Charlotte Faye and Mitchell Durham of Richmond; her brother, David Sparks; seven grandchildren: Lori Eve (Scott), Kari Maloney (Steve), Lindsey Wagner (Chris), Bethany Estes (Chad), Dean Adams (Erika), Jimmy Adams (Ashley) and Ben Durham; five great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
    In addition to her parents, Mrs. Adams was preceded in death by two sons: Darrell Adams and Paul Adams; five brothers: George, J.D., Raymond, Tracey and Amos Sparks; and three sisters: Mildavine Spicer, Zella McIntosh and Virginia Neal-Phillips.
    Funeral services were conducted at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, February 6, at Combs, Parsons & Collins Funeral Home, 328 West Main Street, with Rev. Jack E. Whitaker and Rev. Cournel “Butch” Payne officiating. Burial followed in the Richmond Cemetery. Visitation began at 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, at the funeral home.
    Pallbearers were Chad Estes, Ben Durham, Dean Sparks, Jeff Crockett, Barry Puckett and Mitchell Durham.

Douglas Wayne Chaney

    Douglas Wayne Chaney, age 59, passed away on Wednesday, January 31, 2018, at his residence.
    Born August 28, 1958, Doug was a native of Estill County, and a dedicated husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was strong in his faith, and was a member of New Heights Church in Berea. He made it known to all that God’s purpose for him was to minister to others, which he did daily. He was a true missionary.
    Doug was a veteran of the United States Navy, where he served full-time and with the Naval Reserves for 10 years before being honorably discharged in February 1986. He was awarded the National Reserve Meritorious Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, 1st Good Conduct Award, Navy Rifle Marksmanship Ribbon, and according to him, he was also the #1 “tater peeler” on the ship. During this time, he served the following ships: Azores Naval Air Station; Naval Facility at Argentina, Newfoundland; USS Biddle, a guided missile cruiser out of Norfolk, Virginia; Jacksonville, Florida Naval Air Station; and the USS Yosemite, a destroyer tender out of Mayport, Florida. He was a member of the American Legion, Post 79, and a proud member of the Honor Guard.
    He was a retired rural mail carrier for the United States Postal Service. He often would boast about never missing a day’s work, and how proud he was to serve the residents of Estill County for 29 years. He loved bluegrass music, his family and the Kentucky Wildcats.
    Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Betty Chaney; and the following brothers and sisters: Doris Sears, Paul Kenny Kuykendoll, and Joyce Sasser of Hamilton, Ohio.
    Survivors include his wife, Crystall Chaney; his children, Becky Crawford (Joe) of Irvine, Christopher Chaney (BJ) of Richmond, and Corey Hacker (Mary) of Mt. Vernon; and his grandchildren: Camble Crawford, Teagan Crawford, Andrew Chaney, Kyser Chaney, Ethan Martin and Acacia Hacker. He is also survived by a brother, Darold Chaney of Hamilton, Ohio; and sisters: Charlotte Waldridge of Lawrenceburg, Joyce Sewell of Corbin, Janet Parrish of Frankfort, and Bonnie Sallee (Gary) of Irvine. Doug also leaves behind his mother-in-law, Barb Schrink (Rick) of Brodhead; and a host of nieces, nephews and special friends.
    Memorial services were conducted Saturday, February 3, 3:00 p.m., at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home. Friends called between 1 and 3 p.m., Saturday, at the Funeral Home.
    In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Doug’s name for Memorial Day Flags distributed by the American Legion, Post 79, in Estill County. Nedra Faye Sewell, age 71

    Nedra Faye Sewell, age 71, of Old Kentucky Highway 52 in Richmond, Kentucky, passed away Wednesday, January 31, 2018, at The Terrace Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Berea, following a long illness.
    She was born March 30, 1946 in Estill County and was the daughter of the late Virgil J. and Dorothy Maye Richardson Dennis. She was a former employee of Eastern Kentucky University and a member of the Sandhill Christian Church. She had lived in Richmond most of her life.
    Mrs. Sewell is survived by her husband, Robert Curtis Sewell Sr.; two daughters: Tiffany Sewell and Kathy Rice (Roger), both of Richmond; one son, Robert Curtis Sewell Jr. (Melisa), Berea; one brother, Thaxton Leon Dennis (Marie), Irvine; three grandchildren: Mackenzie Mason, Samuel Roach and Mallory Rice; and one great grandchild, Ally Brezeale.
    She was preceded in death by two daughters; Amanda Carroll Sewell and Amy Michelle Sewell.
    Funeral services were conducted Saturday, February 3, 11:00 a.m., at the Sandhill Christian Church by Bro. Matt Vaught and Bro. Ronald Lutes. Burial was at the Amos Richardson Cemetery. Friends called between 6 and 9 p.m., Friday, February 2nd at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home and after 10:00 a.m., Saturday, at the church.
    Pallbearers were Jeff Dennis, David Holland, David Turpin, Marty Sewell, Terry Cruse, and Monty Reed.

Nina Faye Bicknell Day

    Nina Faye Bicknell Day, 78, passed away on Tuesday, January 30, 2018.
    Nina was born in Estill County, Kentucky, on October 23, 1939, to the late Leonard and Addie Mae Richardson Bicknell. She was a homemaker and had attended the Westside Christian Church.
    She is survived by one son, Terry Day (Angie); two grandchildren: Zachariah and Makenzie Day; two sisters: Eva Mae Ramsey and Joyce B. Webb (Anthony); six brothers: Elmer Venice Bicknell (Grethel), Earnest Lee Bicknell (Ilene), Kenneth Garrison Bicknell (Barbara), Carl Dean Bicknell (Loraine), Randoll Ray Bicknell (Penny), and Gary Leslie Bicknell (Rene) as well as several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Darrell Bicknell.
    Funeral Services were held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 3, at the Combs, Parsons & Collins Funeral Home, 328 West Main Street, Richmond, with Rev. Glendon Mays officiating. Burial followed in the Richmond Cemetery. Visitation was from 5-9 p.m., Friday evening, February 2nd at the funeral home.

Michael Wayne Marcum

    Michael Wayne Marcum, age 67, of Warren, Michigan, passed away Wednesday, January 24, 2018.
    He was born October 19, 1950 in Dayton, Ohio to Stella and Delbert Marcum.
    Beloved husband of JoAnn; dear father of Audra Jones (Jon), Herb Payne (Sherry), and Robyn (Christopher) Hines. Loving grandfather of Nathan, Matthew (Jennifer), Tyler, Eleanor and unborn great-granddaughter, Maddie.
    He is survived by his brothers: Johnnie, Gary (Darlene), Jackie (Jo Ellen) and Delbert (Marie); one sister, Margene (Gene); and many cousins, nieces and nephews that he loved dearly also survive him.
    Michael was a proud Veteran of the United States Army and served in Korea. He was a member of UAW Local 155 where he served as a Chief Steward.
    A memorial service and interment ceremony was held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, February 2, at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, Michigan.

    Survivors other than his parents include his sisters, Alexis and Madeline Thacker; his brother, Jace Thacker; his grandparents: Diana Jones (Dilliard) and Tim Jones (Melisa); and great grandparents: Michael and Mabellene Riddell, Ruby and Charles Thacker, and Janice and David Reynolds.
    He was preceded in death by his grandparents Timothy Leon Thacker and Vanessa Rene Seale.

Joshua Ray Adams

    Joshua Ray Adams, age 31, of Irvine, Kentucky, died Friday, January 26, 2018 as a result of injuries sustained in a vehicle accident.
    He was a Berea native, born April 8, 1986, son of Philip Adams and Kathy Brock Kendrick. He was a United States Postal Service contractor, a United States Air Force veteran, and a resident of Berea for the past five years after being Honorably Discharged from the Air Force and spending a year in California.
    He was a loving husband, father, son and brother. Joshua loved the outdoors, fishing, hunting, guns, video games, was a computer whiz and was lovingly called a "closet nerd" by his family. He was a bookworm, who read a lot, had a dry sense of humor, was never afraid to make a fool of himself, loved candy, vitamins and fiber. Joshua attended New Heights Church in Berea.
    In addition to his parents, he is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth Romberger Adams; three children, Hunter Ray Adams, Porter Allen Adams, and Selah Elizabeth Adams; three sisters, Rosemary Presnell (Benjamin), Heather Bradley (Ryan), and Megan Coffey (Jesse); paternal grandparents, Donnie and Bonnie Ramey Adams; maternal grandmother, Beulah Crane Willis (William); mother and father-in-law, Duane and Susan Stauffer Romberger; and two brothers-in-law, David Romberger (Kinsey) and Jonathan Romberger; as well as a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
    He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Manuel Brock.
    In accordance with Joshua's wishes, he was cremated and a Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, February 1, at New Heights Church, 316 Mini Mall Drive, Berea, with Pastor John Burdette officiating. Acceptance of friends at 1:00 p.m. at the church. Burial of the cremains will follow the service in Davis-Witt Cemetery in Rockcastle County.

    Julian Shane McKinney, age 46, son of Buddy and Wathena McKinney, died Thursday, January 25, 2018 at the UK Medical Center in Lexington.
    Shane was a EKU graduate, a member of Kentucky Crafts, a weaver and artist. He was an employee of UK Medicine as a Pharmacy Technician
    He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Roy Lee and Edith McKinney; and maternal grandparents, Norma and Fred Smyth; his aunts: Ruth McKinney, Eva Marie McKinney, Virginia Slusher (MA), and Mildred Mayne (Ralph), and Mable McKinney; and his uncles: Thomas McKinney, Mac McKinney, James McKinney, and Harlow (Ann) McKinney.
    Shane is survived by his parents, Charles ‘Buddy’ and Wathena Smyth McKinney; his aunt, Elwanda Allen; uncles: Lyndon Smyth, and Elwood Smyth (Reva), and his first cousins: Ratonya Allen, Dedra Chaney, Heather Howser, Shannon Smyth, Robin Smyth, Joyce Slusher, Gordon Slusher (Judy), Louise Grinnell (Rob), Connie Newman (Paul), Sherri Miller (Bill), Dawn and Mike Demayo, Jay Mayne, Mike McKinney, Joel McKinney (Sandra), and special cousin Kevin Slusher.
    Funeral services were Monday, January 29, at 2:00 p.m. at Lakes Funeral Home Berea, 203 North Dogwood Drive, with Rev. Greg Lakes officiating. Burial was in the Madison County Memorial Gardens. Visitation was Sunday, January 28th from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home .

    Elizabeth Sue Abney, age 73, passed away Wednesday, January 24, 2018 at the Marcum and Wallace Hospital in Irvine, Kentucky. She was retired from the Estill County Rehabilitation Center in Irvine.
    Mrs. Tipton is survived by two sons: Jeff Abney (Kim) of Lexington, and James Abney (Melissa) of Irvine; a daughter, Patricia Abney of Irvine; three brothers: Dallas Johnson of Beattyville, Virgil Buddy Johnson of Irvine, and James Avery Johnson; three sisters: Fay Stewart of Irvine, Nancy Teegarden of Butler, and Loera Smith of Lexington; 14 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
    She was preceded in death by her parents, Hubert and Edna Johnson; her husband, Allie Greene Abney Jr.; a son, Samuel David Abney; three sisters: Beulah Mae Mays, Zelma Rogers, and Phyllis Shouse; and a brother, Floyd Merrill “BB Boy” Johnson.
    Funeral services were held at 12 Noon, Saturday, January 27, 2018 at the Grayson Funeral Home Chapel, 201 7th Avenue in Clay City. Friends visited Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until time of the service. Burial was in the Cobb Hill Cemetery.

Alphie Gross Tipton

    Alphie Gross Tipton, 91, of Boone Drive in Richmond, and formerly of Estill County, died Monday, January 22, 2018 at the University of Kentucky Hospital in Lexington, in Hospice Care.
    She was born on September 13, 1926 in Estill County, and was the daughter of the late Sam and Gracie Crawford Gross. Mrs. Tipton was a homemaker and seamstress. She loved to cook, garden, and work in her flowers. She was a member of Tates Creek Baptist Church.
    Mrs. Tipton was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Eugene Tipton, who died in 2010, as well as six brothers, Finley Gross, Dosh Gross, Ralph “Doeg” Gross, Durb “Earville” Gross, Clyde Gross, and Bill Gross; and five sisters, Nettie Wilburn, Mary Townsend, Stella Townsend, Margie Marshall, and Jean Powell.
    Survivors include: one son, Donnie Tipton (Nora), of Willisburg; one daughter, Phyllis Burton (Rodney) of Richmond; four grandchildren, Kimberly Clemenson Webster (Jeff) of Carmel Valley, California; Bryan Tipton (Melissa) of Nicholasville; Tracy Rhodus and David Burton (Trina), both of Richmond; three great grandchildren, Haylee King, Madisyn Hurst, and Caleb Stone, all of Richmond; and numerous nieces and nephews.
    Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, January 26, 2018 at Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home, 1110 Barnes Mill Road, Richmond, with Rev. Jerry Huffman officiating. Burial followed in the Richmond Cemetery. Visitation was from 5-9 p.m. on Thursday, January 25, 2018 at the funeral home.
    Pallbearers were Bryan Tipton, Ronnie Gross, Kenny Marshall, Glenn Berger, Stanford Jones, Henry Gross, Terry Rice, and David Burton.

Mary Katherine McIntosh Bowlin, 58

    Mary Katherine McIntosh Bowlin, age 58, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, January 21, 2018, after a short illness.
    She was born January 8, 1960, to Arthur McIntosh and the late Emma Tipton McIntosh. She lived in Ravenna, Kentucky and graduated from Estill County High School.
    Mrs. Bowlin is survived by her husband of 35 years, Randy Bowlin; two daughters: Amy Shuler (Charlie) of Eastaboga, Alabama; and Randi Kay Bowlin of Oxford, Alabama; two sons: Arthur James "AJ" Bowlin of Eastaboga, Alabama; and Zachary Bowlin of Logan Port, Indiana; six grandchildren: Dawson Shuler, Ethan Shuler, Emily Shuler, Alivia Bowlin, Aubrey Bowlin and Edie Bowlin; two sisters: Margaret Cumpton (Tim) of Greenup County; and Janet Walters (Bill) of Ravenna; two brothers: Arthur Edward McIntosh (Eddie) and Robert Bryan McIntosh (Robbie), both of Ravenna; and lots of nieces and nephews whom she loved very much.
    Graveside services were conducted on Monday, January 22, at the Crowe Cemetery with Eugene McIntosh officiating.
    Pallbearers were Zackary Bowlin, AJ Bowlin, Ryan Cumpton, Chrlie Shuler and Dellie Shuler.
    Mary was always known for helping others and always was nice and kept a smile on her face. She will be greatly missed by all that knew her and loved her.
    She was preceded in death by her mother, Emma Tipton McIntosh, a sister, Doris Ann Fox, and her grandmother, Eva McIntosh.

Margaret Stamper

    Margaret Stamper, age 70, passed away Sunday, January 21, 2018 at the Lee County Care and Rehabilitation Center, located in Beattyville, Kentucky.
    She was born October 28, 1947, in Booneville, a daughter to the late Frank and Francis (Conrad) Callahan. She was loving mother, and grandmother. In her free time, she enjoyed quilting, working puzzles and crosswords.
    Mrs. Stamper is survived by one daughter; Carol Farthing (Tommy) of Irvine; three sisters: Martha Eldridge (Donnie) of Flemingsburg, Dorothy Hickman (Robert) of Fort Ville, Indiana; and Fannie Callahan of Beattyville; two grandchildren, three great grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, four step-great grandchildren, one step-great, great grandchild; and many other loving family members and friends.
    Along with her parents; Frank and Francis Callahan, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas “Tommy” Stamper; and one sister, Maxine Harris.
    Visitation was held Friday, January 26, at the Booneville Funeral Home, 3450 Ky Hwy 11 North, Booneville, from 11:00 a.m. to service time at 1:00 p.m. with Brother Floyd Johns officiating. She was laid to rest in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery.
