Larry Auxier, 67

James Larry Auxier

At a time like this, Larry Auxier would want someone to tell a good joke.
So here goes: What did one fish say to the other fish when he hit a concrete wall?
    Dam.
Now you’re laughing. And to know Larry meant doing a lot of that. Whether at his counter refilling a prescription, listening to his Wellness Wednesday radio show on V-99.3, by his side on a fly fishing trip in the Smokies or at the dinner table, Larry had jokes. And he loved to use them.
Laughing was maybe his favorite pastime, but he had plenty of others. Nature. Fishing. Farming. Civil War history. Literature. And music, was there ever music — from The Beatles to The Who, the Smashing Pumpkins to Nine Inch Nails, Larry loved rock and would get lost in its nuances.
Then there was kindness. An unspoken pastime that graced so many who walked through the doors of Plaza Pharmacy, the business he ran in Irvine, Kentucky, for many years. He quietly took care of the people in the community he loved, even if it meant trading fresh produce for their cholesterol medicine.
He was regular people, out there for regular people. He left this life August 9, 2018, but his legacy will carry on through his those he helped, and those he loved.
James Larry Auxier, 67, was born September 19, 1950, in Paintsville, Kentucky, to the late James Tilsley and Miriam Josephine Auxier.
He leaves behind his wife, Jo Auxier, of Irvine; two daughters, Lauren Abner (Daniel) of Georgetown, Kentucky, and Sarah Rollins (Scott) of Richmond, Kentucky; five grandchildren, Ashley, Austyn, Savannah, Landon and Lola; a brother, Thomas Auxier (Sylvia) of West Palm Beach, Florida; three sisters, Patricia Auxier of Killen, Alabama, Peggy Leake (Francis Raymond) of Richmond, and Mary Jane Nelson (John) of Danville, Kentucky; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews who will miss him dearly.
Larry graduated from Irvine High School in 1968. A United Staes Air Force veteran, Larry graduated from Eastern Kentucky University upon returning from his service in the Vietnam War, and went on to receive his doctor of pharmacy degree from the McWhorter School of Pharmacy at Samford University. He came back to Irvine, where he would run Clinic Pharmacy for many years in the offices of Drs. Virginia Wallace and Charles Terry before opening Plaza Pharmacy. He craved being able to offer his customers an old-time, delicious experience, and he did just that — it was the place you could go for a Boar’s Head sandwich and a to-die-for milkshake while waiting for your prescriptions.
And laughs. There were always laughs.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 13, at Irvine United Methodist Church with lifelong friend Tony White officiating. Friends are welcome to pay their respects at 5:00 p.m. Sunday, August 12th at the church, with family attending at 3:30 p.m.
