Wayne Kenneth Courtney, 82

Wayne Kenneth Courtney, age 82, husband of Tennie Lois Willoughby Courtney, of Stone Road, Clay City, Kentucky, passed away at his residence on Friday, December 28, 2018.
Born in Jacksonville in Harrison County, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Ova Lee and Anna Elizabeth Wagner Courtney. He was a member of the United States Army, the United States Air Force, the Powell County Soil Conservation Board, the Powell County Livestock Association and he was a former laboratory technician with I.B.M. Wayne was a life long farmer who also enjoyed fishing and gardening.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Sandra Jo Abney; three brothers: Gene Courtney, Dave Courtney and Callie Courtney; and four sisters: Eunice Woods, Phyllis Caudill, Ann Pierson and Jo King.
Mr. Courtney is survived by his wife, Tennie Lois Willoughby Courtney of Clay City; three daughters: Karen Hatton (Tim), Michelle Young (Randall), both of Clay City; and Monica Miller (Jimmy) of Irvine; six grandchildren: Josh Abney (Heather), Samantha Miller (Jace), Courtney Miller, Dwayne Hatton (Shavonna), Wesley Miller (Mackenzie) and Chris Miller; and five great grandchildren: Braylon Miller, Hadlee Hatton, Casen Hatton, Ember Miller and Ellie Abney.
Funeral services officiated by Pastor Mike Davis and Wesley Miller will be held at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 2, 2019 at Hearne Funeral Home, Inc., 125 West College Avenue, Stanton. Visitation will be held 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 1, 2019 at the funeral home. Interment will be in Courtney Family Cemetery with Tim Hatton, Randall Young, Jace Miller, Jimmy Miller, Wesley Miller, Josh Abney, Dwayne Hatton and Greg King serving as active pallbearers.
Honorary pallbearers are the Powell County Soil Conservation Board and a host of family and friends.

Bonnie Mae Rogers Dunaway, age 79, wife of James Phillip Dunaway, passed away Friday, December 28, 2018 at her home.
She was born November 7, 1939 in Estill County, Kentucky to the late Dellie and Allie McIntosh Shuler.
Survivors include, husband, James Phillip Dunaway; sons, Lloyd Dale York (Sandy), Clay City; Alvin C. York (Carole), Crittenden; Sam G Shuler (Kim), Richmond; Jackie R. Rogers (Becky), Irvine; Ed Rogers (Wendy), Mt. Sterling; Anthony R. Rogers (Steve), Mt. Sterling; and Brandon Dunaway (Rolanda), Stanton; brothers, Donald Shuler, Sid Shuler, Walter Shuler, Charlie Shuler, and Dellie Shuler Jr.; sisters, Emma Jean Oney and Demie Myers; 25 grandchildren; one adopted grandchild; 37 great grandchildren; and two great, great grandchildren.
Services were Monday, December 31, 2018, 11:00 a.m., at Davis & Davis Funeral Home, 777 West College Avenue, Stanton, by Rev. Raymond Tipton and Rev. Gainus Rogers. Visitation was held Sunday, December 30th, 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial was in the Cobb Hill Cemetery with Matthew York, Gabe Rogers, Jeff Murphy, Tony Workman, Brandon Dunaway and Mitchell Rogers serving as pallbearers.
Honorary pallbearers serving were Tabitha Elmore, Casey Andres, Kayla Shuler, Jennifer Banks, Elizabeth Workman, Brittany Murphy, and Courtney Nolan.
Elsie Scrivner Kirby, 99
Elsie Scrivner Kirby, 99, widow of Charles A. Kirby, passed away Thursday, December 27, 2018 at the Compassionate Care Center in Richmond, after a long illness
Mrs. Kirby was a native of Estill County, born November 27, 1919, a daughter of the late Roy Jefferson and Melinda Garrett Scrivner. She was a homemaker who enjoyed sewing and quilting, and a member of the Panola Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by a son, Richard Dean Kirby; her brothers, Henry Valentine Scrinver and Billy Scrivner; her sisters, Cora Mae Noland and Imogene Brandenburg; a granddaughter, Peggy Kirby; a daughter-in-law, Provie Kirby; and a grandson-in-law, Michael Stevens.
Survivors include her sons: Douglas Kirby and Jerry Kirby (Vydra); her daughter, Dixie McQueen; her grandchildren: Ricky Kirby (Brenda), Timothy Kirby (Pam), Karen Stevens, Regina Oliver (Neal), and Matthew Kirby (Brittany) ; 12 great grandchildren; and 10 great, great grandchildren.
Services were held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, December 30, 2018, at Lewis-Abner Home for Funerals, with Bro. Ricky Kirby officiating. Burial followed in the Doug Kirby Cemetery. Friends called anytime after 12:00 Noon, Sunday, at the funeral home.
Pallbearers were Tim Kirby, Matthew Kirby, John Kirby, Michael Kyle Stevens, Jacob Daniel Stevens and Philip Paul Stevens.
Virginia Dare LeMaster Samples, 78
Virginia Dare LeMaster Samples, the widow of the late Charles Logan Samples and the daughter of the late Drucilla Lemaster, was born in Estill County, Kentucky on July 8, 1940 and departed this life on Wednesday, December 26, 2018, at her home in Lee County, Kentucky at the age of 78 years, 5 months, and 18 days. She was a loving homemaker who loved to quilt.
She is survived by two sons, Donnie Wayne Samples (Mary) of Beattyville, and Ralph Samples of Columbia, Missouri; two grandchildren, Jason Charles Samples and Crystal Dawn Samples, both of Beattyville; one great granddaughter, Abagail Tipton of Beattyville; a brother, Denver Cole of Irvine; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Mrs. Samples was preceded in death by her mother, Drucilla; her husband, Charles; a brother, Bobby LeMaster; and a great granddaughter, Jessica Ray Samples.
Visitation was held Saturday, December 29, 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., at the Newnam Funeral Home Chapel, 108 Center Street in Beattyville. Funeral service followed at 1:00 p.m. with Sherri Marshall officiating. Burial was in the Proctor Cemetery.
Ruby Moreland, 85
Ruby Moreland, age 85, of Broadway in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Tuesday, December 25, 2018, at her home following a sudden illness.
She was born May 29, 1933 in Estill County and was the daughter of the late Howell and Fannie Mae Charles Walling. She was a homemaker and had lived in Estill County most of her life.
Mrs. Moreland was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Moreland.
She is survived by one daughter, Lisa Shelton, Madison County; three sons: Freddie Moreland, David Moreland, both of Estill County; and Charles Walling, Madison County; one brother, Floyd Walling, Estill County; five grandchildren: John David Moreland, Jeremy Moreland, Amanda Toler, Josh Walling and Courtney Shelton; and six great grandchildren: Cade Toler, Ava Toler, Berkley Moreland, Audrey Moreland, Olivia Moreland and Evelyn Moreland.
Mrs. Moreland was preceded in death by one son, Michael Moreland; one sister, Drucilla Gross; and four brothers: James, Harold Gene, Glen and Garrett Walling.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, December 29, 11:00 a.m., at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was at the Gumm Cemetery. Friends called between 6 and 9 p.m., Friday, December 28th at the funeral home.
Pallbearers were John David Moreland, Jeremy Moreland, Courtney Shelton, Trey Toler, Pat Reece and Tom Webster.
Janet Lee Parrett, 63
Janet Lee Parrett, age 63, of Irvine Road in Richmond, Kentucky, passed away Tuesday, December 25, 2018, at Baptist Health in Lexington following a short illness.
She was born July 7, 1955 in Estill County and was the daughter of Mattie Fay Stamper Horn and the late Wilgus Horn. She was a retired employee of the Greenbriar Nursing Home and a member of the Easter Valley Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to her mother, include her husband, William Glenn Parrett; three daughters: Yevonne Kordenat, Ohio; Selena Harris, Madison County; and Jessica Parrett, Ohio; two sons: Jason Parrett, Ohio; and Jeremy Parrett, Garrett County; two sisters: Rhonda Gould, Estill County; and Fay Bloyd, Jefferson County; three brothers: Wilgus Horn, Jr., Madison County; Bobby Horn, Ohio; and Jackie Horn, Estill County; and nine grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday, December 30, 2:00 p.m., at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Mike Davis. Burial was at the Campbell Cemetery. Friends called after 11:00 a.m., Sunday, at the funeral home.

William Preston Smith, 88

William Preston Smith, age 88, of Lawrenceburg, Indiana, passed away Tuesday, December 25, 2018, at his home following a long illness.
He was born January 31, 1930 in Irvine, Kentucky, and was the son of the late Vernon and Lillie Green Marcum Smith. He was a veteran of the United States Army and a retired employee of the Chrysler Corporation. He had lived in Ohio most of his life.
Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his wife, Ella Morris Smith.
He is survived by his daughter, Deborah Dixon (Danny), Lawrenceburg, Indiana; three grandchildren: Christopher Dixon, Kristen Brown and Joshua Dixon; and two great grandchildren: Lily and Ella Brown.
Mr. Smith was also preceded in death by one sister, Irene Smith; and four brothers: Kenneth, Wayne, Harold and Grafton Smith.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, December 31, 1:00 p.m., at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Larry Smith. Burial was at the South Irvine Cemetery. Friends called after 11:00 a.m., Monday, at the funeral home.
David Cole Winburn, 78
David Cole Winburn, age 78, of Old Ironworks Road in Winchester, Kentucky, passed away Tuesday, December 25, 2018, at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington, following a long illness.
He was born March 4, 1940 in Clark County and was the son of the late Otis and Thelma Angel Winburn. He was a retired Wintech employee and a member of the Grace Bible Church. He had lived in Clark County all his life.
Mr. Winburn is survived by his wife, Dora Yvonne Toler Winburn; one daughter, Terri Lynn Pruitt, Lexington; one son, Luis David Winburn, Winchester; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Wilma Ballard.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, December 28, 2:00 p.m., at the Scobee Funeral Home, 219 West Lexington Avenue, Winchester, by Bro. Lee Cruse and Bro. Warren Toler. Burial was at the Clarmont Memorial Gardens. Friends called after 11:00 a.m., Friday, at the Scobee Funeral Home.
Pallbearers were George Johnson, Brad Clem, Mark Jones, Johnathan Toler Jones, Lynn Toler, Jr., Josh Toler and Cody Toler.
Honorary pallbearer was John Spencer.

Linda Gilbert Willis, age 60, wife of Ralph Willis passed away Sunday, December 23, 2018 at Baptist Health Richmond.
She was born August 19, 1958 in Ohio to the late Ralph and Pearl Brooks Gilbert. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and sister. She loved to spend time with her family and enjoyed her flower gardens. She was a member of Irvine View Holiness Church.
Other than her husband, Mrs. Willis is survived by her children, Ralph Willis, Jr. (Tamara), Donald Joe Willis (Corinna), Donna Lynn Willis and Mary Faye Willis, all of Richmond; two brothers, Leon Gilbert (Frances), and Ray Gilbert; two sisters, Verna Shuler and Wilma Feltner (Wayne); eight grandchildren, Crystal, Joseph, Ryan, Cameron, Shannon, Kayla, Kinley, and Breanna; along with numerous nieces and nephews that also survive.
Visitation was 5-9 p.m., Wednesday, December 26 at Davis and Powell Funeral Home, 616 Chestnut Street in Berea, with funeral services at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 27th at the funeral home. Burial was at the Pilot Knob Cemetery.
Ramona Gayle Wells, 60
Ramona Gayle Wells, 60, of Moberly, Kentucky, passed away on Friday, December 21, 2018 at her home.
She was born in Connersville, Indiana, on May 29, 1958 to the late Jack Short and Illa Collins Short. Ramona was a homemaker and enjoyed working with her flowers and making handmade jewelry.
Mrs. Wells is survived by: her husband, Michael Wells; her daughter, Kimberly Wells (Jerrod Felice); her granddaughter, Nadia Felice; one sister, Maliea McQueen; as well as a host of other extended family and friends.
Funeral services were conducted at 7:00 p.m., Sunday, December 30, 2018, at the Combs, Parsons & Collins Funeral Home, 328 West Main Street, Richmond, with Pastor Gerald Powell officiating. Visitation was after 3:00 p.m., Sunday, at the funeral home.
Burial was conducted at 1:30 p.m., Monday, December 31, 2018, at the Richmond Cemetery.

Joel Scott Noland, 68
A memorial service was held Saturday, December 29, 2018 at Irvine United Methodist Church, 243 Main Street, Irvine, at 2 p.m., for Joel Scott Noland, age 68, of Lexington, Kentucky, formerly of Irvine, who passed away Saturday, November 17, 2018 in Ajijic, Mexico, after a short illness. Friends called after 1 p.m., and a celebration of life reception was held after the service at the church.
Honorary pallbearers were Gordon Edward Wilson, Tobo Bryant, Joel Jennings, Sean Russell, Gearld Hutchins, Scott Minor, Neale Russell and Bryan Quinn.

Joel was born September 25, 1950, in Madison County, the son of Sara Scott Minor Noland, age 98 and the late Cecil Noland.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Joy Lee Chambers Noland; daughters: Julie Noland and Catherine Noland-Stambush (Dan); grandchildren: Cara, Colin and Clare Stambush; and William (Fox) Quinn; his sisters: Susan Dick, Nancy Bidwell, and Amy Hughes (Eddie); and his nieces and nephews: Susan Beth Cocolas, Keith Wilson, Jay Wilson, Matthew Bidwell and Luke Hughes.

William Taylor Dunaway, 82
William Taylor Dunaway, age 82, of Rice Street in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Sunday, December 23, 2018, at Saint Joseph Hospital following a short illness.
He was born August 19, 1936 in Estill County and was the son of the late Charlie and Martha Powell Dunaway. He worked for the CSX Railroad and attended the White Oak Church of God. He lived in Oldham County most of his life.
Mr. Dunaway is survived by two daughters: Regina Dunaway and Dema Schutte, both of Oldham County; one son, Vance Dunaway, Oldham County; several brothers and sisters; six grandchildren: Logan Lonkard, Evan Lonkard, Duall Schutte, Payton Schutte, Aspynn Dunaway, and Ar-Lo Dunaway; and one great grandchild, Jace Wilson.
He was preceded in death by four siblings.
Memorial services will be held at a later date.

Billy Otho Riddell, 79
Billy Otho Riddell, age 79, of Ann Street in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Sunday, December 23, 2018 at Marcum and Wallace Memorial Hospital following a long illness.
He was born July 10, 1939 in Estill County to the late William Price Riddell and Victoria Horn Riddell. He retired from Finchville Farms and was a member of Rice Station Christian Church. He was a member of the National Guard for 6 years. He lived in Estill County most of his life.
Mr. Riddell is survived by one sister, Sylvia Joan Riddell, Estill County; one brother, Sidney J. "Jack" Riddell, Estill County; a special friend, Brenda Hardy; and a host of friends and relatives.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Richard W. Riddell.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, December 28, 1:00 p.m., at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Ricky Powell. Friends called after 11:00 a.m., Friday, at the funeral home.

Elbert J. “Bud” Freeman, 72
Elbert J. “Bud” Freeman, age 72, of Rose Street in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Tuesday, December 18, 2018, at his home following a long illness.
He was born December 1, 1946 in Batesville, Indiana and was the son of the late Virgil “Doc” and Bertha Singleton Freeman. He was a retired employee of Verizon and attended the Irvine First Church of the Nazarene. He was a United States Army veteran of the Vietnam Era and a member of the American Legion.
Mr. Freeman is survived by his wife, Rhonda Gaye Wilson Freeman; one daughter, Stacie Holmes (B.J.); Dayton, Ohio; one son, Joseph Freeman, Madison County; one sister, Darleen Estes, Estill County; and four grandchildren: Chance, Savannah, Colton and Addison Holmes.
He was preceded in death by four sisters: Carlie Baker, Corena Steinmetz, Pattie Freeman, and Betty Freeman; and one brother, Dewey Freeman.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, December 22, 1:00 p.m., at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was at the Rose-Freeman Cemetery. Friends called between 6 and 9 p.m., Friday, December 21st at the funeral home. Military Honors were provided by the American Legion Post 79.
Pallbearers were Tim Freeman, David Neal, John Davis, Tim Horn, Merle Junior Heinlein, and Jeffery Isaacs II.
Harold Henry, 88

Harold Henry, age 88 of Fairborn, Ohio, formerly of Miamisburg, Ohio, passed away Monday, December 17, 2018 at Soin Medical Center.
He was born May 23, 1930 in Irvine, Kentucky to the late Andrew Jackson and Ida Henry.
In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Bonnie J. Henry; and siblings, Mabel Campbell, Rosa Faye Wilson and Millard Henry; and many other loved ones.
Harold is survived by his children, Donna Hubert (Rick), Nicky Henry and Jackie Barker (Gary); a granddaughter, Kelli Barker; and his sister, Alice Rogers; as well as numerous family and friends.
Harold attended school in Kentucky and worked with his father at a sawmill, learning the trade of carpentry from a young age. He worked in the coal industry for a time before relocating to Ohio and beginning a career in carpentry. Harold was fortunate to have owned and operated his own company for a time, P&M Construction, and later retired from Kendall Construction. He was always a devoted family man and provider, having built two homes for them over the years. Harold continued to work for many local businesses in the Dayton area as a jack-of-all trades. He was a life-long member of the First Church of God and served in various roles including, Sunday school leader, choir leader, assistant pastor and board member. Harold will always be remembered for his sense of humor, his commitment to his family, especially Nicky, his kindness, honesty and love of life.
Family received guests from 5:00-7:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 19, at Newcomer Funeral Home, Kettering, Ohio. Visitation was hosted from 12:00 Noon, 2:00 p.m., Thursday, December 20, at Lewis-Abner Home for Funerals in Irvine, Kentucky, with a service following immediately at 2:00 p.m. Dunaway Cemetery in Irvine, served as Harold’s final resting place.

Mary Ellen Williams Laytart, age 67, of Hazard, Kentucky, passed away on Monday, December 17, 2018 at the Norton Community Hospital in Norton, Virginia. Mary was a field representative for the Kentucky Revenue Cabinet. She is the mother of Estill Engineers boys basketball coach Jon B. Bentley of Irvine.
Mrs. Laytart was born August 24, 1951 in Perry County, the daughter of the late Boyd Williams and the late Goldie Plowman Williams.
She is also preceded in death by two sisters: Carolyn Smith and Versie Begley.
Mrs. Laytart is survived by her husband, Howard Laytart; two sons: Jody Bentley (Sheryl) of Big Stone Gap, Virginia; and Jon Bentley of Irvine; two stepdaughters: Pamela Kaye Purcell and Sherry Renee Johnson; two sisters: Nadine Adams and Lois Martin; six brothers: Roy, Lawrence, Clifford, Carlos, Clifton and Isaac "IB" Williams; two grandchildren: Alex & Nick Bentley; five step-grandchildren: Courtney, Laura, Johnathon, Riley and Reese; five step-great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Visitation was held 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., Thursday, December 20th at Maggard's Mountain View Chapel, 352 Roy Campbell Drive in Hazard, followed by the funeral service at 1:00 p.m. with Glenn Noe officiating. Burial was at the Williams Family Cemetery at Acup.

Rickie Allen Harper, age 67, of Flemingsburg, Kentucky, passed away Saturday, December 15, 2018 at his home after an extended illness.
He was born on August 31, 1951 in Carlisle, Kentucky, a son of Russell and Eva Howard Harper. Mr. Harper was a retired roofer. He enjoyed riding his Harley motorcycle and reading.
In addition to his parents, survivors include his wife, Faye Caudill Harper; one daughter, Dawn Marie Day (Paul) of Irvine; three step-children, David Blankenship of Goshen, Indiana; Michael Blankenship of Raleigh, North Carolina; and Jaime Timmons of Bristol, Indiana; one brother, Gary Harper of Irvine; two sisters, Linda Martin of Elkhart, Indiana; and Sue Geil of Irvine; four adopted brothers and sisters; three grandchildren, Cassidy Day, Dustin Day and Caitlyn Jewell; one great-grandson, Grayson Jewell; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 19, 2018 in the chapel of the Michael R. Gray Funeral Home in Morehead with Brother Spike Skaggs officiating. Burial followed in the Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens. Visitation was after 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, at the funeral home.

Terrie Lynn Osborne Russell, 64
Terrie Lynn Osborne Russell, age 64, mother of Cameron Russell, passed away at her home on Wednesday, December 12, 2018.
She was a native of Estill County, born February 11, 1954, the daughter of the late Leonard and Velma Tipton Osborne.
Ms. Russell was preceded in death by her son, Kevin Osborne, and by her sister, Linda Eden.
Survivors other than her son Cameron include her sisters: Shirley Carper, Patricia McIntosh, and Debbie O. Rose; and a grandson, Chase Osborne.
A memorial service will be held at a later time.
