James William “Jim” Broaddus, 91


James William “Jim” Broaddus

    James William “Jim” Broaddus, age 91, of Brodhead, Kentucky, died on Sunday, September 22, 2019.
    Jim was born in Irvine Kentucky on February 3, 1928 and was the last surviving child of eight children born to Dr. Beverly S. and Lula May (Congleton) Broaddus. He graduated from Estill County High School in 1946, Centre College in 1955, and the University of Kentucky in 1977.
    He served in the United States Navy from 1950 until he was honorably discharged in 1954.
    On March 30, 1953 he married Virginia Stevens of Brodhead and together they had three children, Ann Katherine Griffen, James Colson Broaddus, and Matthew William Broaddus. Jim was a teacher who began his career in 1949 at Marble Yard School, a one-room country school in Estill County, and retired as an Associate Professor from Indiana State University in 1995.
    Jim enjoyed academic writing and the high point of his scholarship resulted in the publication of a book that critically examined Edmund Spenser’s epic poem The Faerie Queene, which is an allegorical tale celebrating the Tudor dynasty and Queen Elizabeth I. He was an avid reader and enthusiastic member of the The Bittersweet Readers Club.
    He was a very proud grandfather of Andrew Griffen, Elisabeth Broaddus, and Daniel Broaddus and his wife Kayla.
    Jim is survived by his devoted wife Virginia and children Ann Katherine, Matthew and his wife Angela, along with many nieces and nephews, and a large and loving group of Stevens family brothers and sisters-in-law.
    He was preceded in death by his parents, Beverly and Lula Broaddus; his sisters, Louise Maxson, Margaret Wickersham, Rowena Lorentzson, Beverly Jean Parker, and Irene Broaddus; his brothers, Edward and Charles Broaddus; and his son, James Colson Broaddus.
    Visitation will be Friday, September 27, 2019, starting at 6:00 p.m. at Marvin E. Owens Home for Funerals, 148 West Main Street, Brodhead. Funeral services will be Saturday, September 28 at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Maretburg Cemetery, Rockcastle County.

Stephen Rae Farthing

    Stephen Rae Farthing, age 69, of Langley, Kentucky, husband of Emma Bates Farthing, passed away Thursday, September 19, 2019 at his residence.
    He was born December 2, 1949 in Indiana, a son of the late Ira Raymond Farthing (Oeida) and Ruby White Pollett (Roy). He was a member of the Graceway United Methodist Church, a member of the Gideons and a retired Grocery Store Manager.
    In addition to his wife, Emma, he is survived by two sons: Stephen Farthing II (Toni), Paducah; and Dr. Kevin Farthing (Youtha), Prestonsburg; three daughters: Sandra Hall (Reggie), Prestonsburg; Samantha Farthing, Elsmere; and Kellie Farthing, Winchester; two sisters: Roetta Farthing, Lexington; and Anita Jenkins, Irvine; 12 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
    He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Carolyn Gault.
    The funeral service was conducted Sunday, September 21, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. in the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, Kentucky, with Roy Harlow officiating. Burial followed in the Gethsemane Gardens, Prestonsburg. Visitation was from 6 until 9 p.m., Friday, September 19th and 1 p.m. until 9 p.m., Saturday, September 20th at the funeral home.

Eunice Hutchison Witt

    Eunice Hutchison Witt, 95, wife of Theodore Ray Witt, passed away Sunday, September 22, 2019.
    Eunice was born in Irvine, Kentucky, August 29, 1924, to the late Clarence and Jennie Hutchison. She was a graduate of Irvine High School, class of 1942. She worked in the insurance business for 33 years, the majority of which were for the Estill Insurance Agency. She also worked as the City Clerk for the City of Irvine for 10 years, before retiring in 1986. She was a current member of River Drive Christian Church and a former member of the First Baptist Church in Irvine. She had served as a Sunday school teacher and she sang in the choir. She loved to cook for her family and others, and enjoyed sending cards for special occasions to those she knew.
    She was preceded in death by a son, Danny R. Witt; a granddaughter, Heather Witt; her parents, Clarence and Jennie Hutchison; two brothers, Clarence Hutchison Jr. and William Elmore; and a sister, Wanda Thomas.
    Mrs. Witt is survived by her husband of 73 years, Ray; a daughter, Janie Stone (Ryan); a granddaughter, DeAnna Neal (Brian); two great grandchildren, Shelby and Jacob Neal; a sister, Emma Lee Hood; a sister-in-law, Sadia Elmore; and several nieces and nephews.
    Funeral service will be Thursday, September 26, 2019, 11:00 a.m., at River Drive Christian Church, Irvine, Kentucky, with burial to follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Wednesday, September 25, 2019, 6:00-8.30 p.m., at Lewis-Abner Home for Funerals in Irvine.

Mayfra Fike Binegar

    Mayfra Fike Binegar, 85, of Bay View, Ohio, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family, on September 20, 2019. May was born on November 22, 1933 in Estill County, Kentucky.
    She was preceded in death by the love of her life, the Rev. Virgil L. Binegar; parents Hargis and Dowthula Dixon Fike; brothers: Delbert, Elmer, Glyndon, Graydon, and Gayle Fike; sisters: Beatrice and Opal Fike, Rachel Kelly, and Thetus Flynn; and grandson, Edward “Eddie” Huber.
    Mrs. Binegar is survived by sons: Dean Flynn (Lena Kay) and Jerry Flynn (Charlotte); daughters: Cindy Porter (Wayne), Cora Freeh (Mark), and Leslie Huber (Warren); and brothers: Garrett Fike (Wilma) and Marcum Fike (Rachel); and grandchildren: Tricia Ebner (Doug), Lena Marie Fuller (Brad), Kris Flynn (Megan), Cory Flynn (Amy), Jerry Jr. Flynn (Jenny), Jackie Flynn, Joleen Solis (Juan), Jessica Coulter (Mark), Caitlin Tyler (Timothy), Patrick Freeh (Mary), Kathleen Anne Freeh; Brett, Ashley May, and Jacob Huber; 17 loving great grandchildren and two great, great grandchildren. She was also loved and cherished by many nieces and nephews.

Amanda Lois Smith McKinney

    Amanda Lois Smith McKinney was born March 28, 1932 in Jackson County, Kentucky, and departed this life Sunday, September 15, 2019 in Flintstone, Maryland, being 87 years of age. She was the daughter of the late Allen and Dema Lainhart Harrison.
    Lois is survived by three sons, Larry C. Smith (Sally) of McKee, Phillip Smith (Connie) of Sand Gap and Gary E. Smith (Cindy) of Flintstone, Maryland. She is also survived by a step-daughter, Roseanne Smith of Estill County. Lois is survived by eleven grandchildren, several great grandchildren and several great, great grandchildren.
    In addition to her parents, Lois was preceded in death by a son, Belford Smith; a grandson, Charles Smith; and by her siblings, Jackie Gay, Elmo, Jr., Lincoln, Burnard, Everett, Freddie Lee, Dora Lee and Vera Harrison.
    Lois was a member of the Waneta Church of God.
    The funeral service was at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, September 21, 2019 at Lakes Funeral Home in McKee with Bro. Jason Elam and Bro. Mitchell Ball officiating. Visitation was from 12:00 Noon until service time.

    Martha Ellen Flanery Frisby, age 90, passed away Wednesday, September 18, 2019 at Diversicare of Oak Ridge in Tennessee following a short illness.
    She was born November 1, 1928 in Estill County to the late William Columbus Flanery and Susan Horn Flanery. She was a homemaker and attended the Calvary Baptist Church in Middletown, Ohio.
    Mrs. Frisby was preceded in death by her husband, George Thomas Frisby.
    She is survived by one daughter, Brenda Ruth Lodwick, Tennessee; two sons: Danny Ray Frisby, Tennessee; and Larry Thomas Frisby, Campbellsville; one sister, Norma Flanery, Winchester; ten grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren.
    Mrs. Frisby is preceded in death by three sisters, Jewell Aldridge, Gloria Newman, and Betty Flanery; and two brothers: James Flanery and Lindburg Flanery.
    Funeral services were conducted Sunday, September 22, 2019, 2:00 p.m., at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home by Bro. Larry Frisby. Burial followed in the West Irvine Cemetery. Friends called after 12:00 Noon, Sunday at the funeral home.

    Estill Ray South, age 85, of Grand Avenue in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Tuesday, September 17, 2019 at the VA Hospital in Lexington following a long illness.
    He was born September 10, 1934 in Hazard, Kentucky to the late Polk South and Elvira Gabbard South. He was a retired engineer from CSX and was a member of the Mt. Carmel Christian Church. He was a United States Navy veteran and lived in Estill County since 1985.
    Mr. South is survived by his wife, Mary Bailey South, Estill County; three sons: Anthony Ray South, Florida; Mark Bradley Tudor, Estill County; and Richard Hill Tudor, Mississippi; eleven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
    He was preceded in death by two sisters, Opal Mayo and Geraldine Sturdivant; and one brother, Otis South
    Graveside services will be conducted Tuesday, September 24, 11:00 a.m., at Sunset Memorial Gardens by Bro. Mark Pearson.

    Harry Walling, age 86 of Franklin, Ohio, passed away Sunday, September 15, 2019 at his residence.
    Harry was born on Sunday, November 13th, 1932 in Irvine, Kentucky to the late George and Elizabeth Rucker Walling. He was retired from Miami Valley News and was a member of Masonic Lodge #55 F & AM, Franklin, Ohio.
    He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Carol Walling on Monday, October 19, 2015, and his son, Harry James "Jim" Walling on Tuesday, February 7, 2007.

    Ollie Roberts, 77, passed away Sunday, September 15, 2019, at her home in Berea, Kentucky.
    She was a native of Estill County, born November 6, 1941, a daughter of the late Ernest and Anna Marie Griffin Roberts. She was a member of Rice Station Christian Church and a former employee of Westinghouse and Carhatt Inc.
    Mrs. Roberts was preceded in death by a son, Michael Lee Hardy; her brother, Billy Roberts (Mary Jo); and her sister, Wilma Brinegar.
    Survivors include her children: Lena Marie Lamb, Anna Hardy Fowler, Eugenia Hickam (Mike), Linda June Richardson, and Greg Hardy (Darlene); her brothers: Ernest Glen "Debbie" Roberts and James "Chubs" Roberts (Shirley); her sisters: Cleta Webb and Kay Sewell (Kenny); her grandchildren: Chris, Mallory, John, Devin, Cody, Hannah, Jeffery, Daniel and Sarah; and her great grandchildren: Tristain, Brennon, Bentley, Stella, Jagan, Brax and Taylor.

    Dalton Tanner Adams, age 24, of Beechwood Drive in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Sunday, September 15, 2019, at the Marcum & Wallace Memorial Hospital.
    He was born June 7, 1995 in Madison County and was the son of Gregory Todd “Greg” and Paula Renee Cox Adams. He was a former employee of Precision Tubing and a former member of the National Guard. He had lived in Estill County all his life.
    Survivors in addition to his father and mother include his grandparents: Johnny & Pauline Cox and Shirley & Doris Adams, all of Estill County; one brother, Micah Adams, Estill County; aunts and uncles: Kim & Jimmy Cox, Scotty & Missy Adams, and Shannon & Kim Adams; and several cousins.

    Daw Miller, Jr., age 72, of Stacy Lane Road in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Sunday, September 15, 2019, at the Compassionate Care Center in Richmond, following a short illness.
    He was born September 19, 1946 in Estill County and was the son of the late Daw Miller Sr. and Kate Edmonson Miller. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Era. He was a retired instructor with the Bluegrass Community and Technical College and was a member and deacon of the Valley View Baptist Church. He had lived in Estill County all his life.
    Mr. Miller is survived by his wife of 50 years, Mildred “Midge” Murphy Miller; two sons: David Miller (Audrea), Estill County; and Toby Miller (Adriana), Madison County; four sisters: Helen Woolery, Loretta Crowe, Mary Logsdon and Judy Lynch, all of Estill County; and three grandchildren: Devin, Deron and Jacquelynn Miller.
    He was preceded in death by seven sisters: Odie Bishop, Cleo Bishop, Joyce Riddell, Dolly Crowe, Bonnie Riddell, Ruth Norton and Curlean Riddell.
    Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, September 18, 1:00 p.m., at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Todd Blevins and Bro. Ricky Powell. Burial was at the West Irvine Cemetery. Military Rites were provided by the American Legion Post 79 Honor Guard. Friends called between 6 and 9 p.m., Tuesday, September 17th at the funeral home.

    Christine Wiseman, age 93, of White Oak Road in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Sunday, September 15, 2019 in Richmond.
    She was born July 24, 1926 in Estill County to the late John and Mandy Belle Moreland West. She was a retired seamstress for Carhartt Inc. and a member of the Hargett Church of God. She lived in Estill County most of her life. She is survived by one son, Eugene Wiseman (Nettie Jane), Richmond; one sister, Lorene Deaton, Frankfort, Ohio; six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
    Mrs. Wiseman is preceded in death by her husband, Dewey Wiseman; two daughters, Amanda and Louise Wiseman; one son, Lloyd Wiseman; two sisters, Mary Alice Wiseman and Liza Dee Imhoff; and three brothers, James, William and Millard West.

Alfred Eugene Rogers

    Alfred Eugene Rogers, age 90, passed away Thursday, September 12, 2019 at the Clark Regional Medical Center, Winchester, Kentucky.
    Born March 19, 1929 in Patsy, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Freeling Hisle Rogers and the late Elizabeth Ollie Spencer Rogers and he was a member of Bowen First Church of God. Eugene was a veteran of the United States Army serving with the rank of Private. He was employed 41 years with the Ashland Oil Company working in the Powell County oil fields, Ashland's Pipeline Engineering Department at Ashland, KY and the last 22 years with Ashland Oil Company's Real Estate Department traveling all over the United States.
    He is survived by one son, Phillip Rogers (Evelyn Marie Potts) of Peachtree City, Georgia; one sister, Violet Laverne Mullins of Maryville, Tennessee; two grandchildren, Matthew Daniel Rogers (Bailey Abercrombie) and Jamie Meredith Rogers; and two great grandchildren, Madelyn Jean Rogers and Emilia Lorraine Rogers.
    Eugene was the widower of Juanita Morton Rogers.
    He was also preceded in death by one brother, James Edward Rogers.
    Funeral services officiated by Bro. William Carpenter will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 21, 2019 at Hearne Funeral Home Inc., 125 West College Avenue, Stanton. Visitation will be held Friday, September 20, 2019 at 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Stonegate Cemetery, Stanton, with military honors.

    Mr. Collett was a native of Estill County, born April 3, 1973, the son of Garry and Eddie Bea Watson Collett. He was a former employee of the Pepsi company.
    Survivors other than his parents include a sister, Teresa Michelle Collett; and several nieces and nephews.

    Gordon R. Phillips, son of the late Thomas Jefferson and Lena Mae Hambrick Phillips was born in Lee County, Kentucky on April 20, 1940 and departed this life in Beattyville, Kentucky on Tuesday, September 10, 2019 at the age of 79 years, 4 months, and 20 days.
    He is survived by two sons, Kevin Phillips (Melinda) of Beattyville, and Michael Kelso of Clay City; two grandchildren, Katlyn and Jordon Phillips; a special friend, Carolyn Brandenburg; two brothers and one sister, Gerald Phillips of Lexington, Floretta Thorpe of Irvine, and Larry Lee Phillips of Beattyville; along with a host of other relatives and friends.
    In addition to his parents, Gordon was preceded in death by a son, Gordon Scott Phillips; three sisters; and five brothers.
    Funeral services were officiated by Bro. Kevin Phillips on Thursday, September 12, 2019, at Newnam Funeral Home, 108 Center Street, Beattyville. Burial was in the Phillips Family Cemetery, Wade Ridge Road in Beattyville.

    Harold Luther Witt, age 81, of Clark County, Kentucky, husband of 64 years to Virginia Puckett Witt, passed away at 12:57 a.m., Monday, September 10, 2019 at home.
    A native of Estill County, born August 24, 1938, he was the son of the late Luther Witt and Anna Lee Wiseman Witt. He was the owner of a horse feed business for 48 years before retiring four years ago. He was a member of Landmark Baptist Church and served as head usher and trustee for many years.
    In addition to his wife, he is survived by two children, Pamela Witt Waltermire (Tim) of Clark County and Gary Witt of Jeffersonville (Rhonda); three grandchildren, Baesha Bridges (Zach), Makenzie Kinder (Ian) and Logan Witt; two great grandchildren, Weston Bridges and Sawyer Bridges; one sister, Barbara Witt Crump (Aubrey) , as well as several nieces and nephews
    Visitation will be from 5:00-8:00 p.m., Friday, September 13, 2019 at Landmark Baptist Church, 1223 Ironworks Road, Winchester. Services will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 14, 2019 at the church by Bro. Jimmy Muncie. Burial will be in Clarmont Memorial Gardens.

    Lloyd Wiseman, age 69, of White Oak Road in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Monday, September 9, 2019 at his home.
    He was born August 24, 1950 in Estill County to Christine West Wiseman and the late Dewey Wiseman. He was a retired Pepsi distributor and attended the Hargett Church of God. He lived in Estill County all his life.
    Mr. Wiseman is survived by his mother, Christine West Wiseman, Estill County; two daughters: Amy Crowe (Bradley) and Susan Hix, both of Estill County; one son, Christopher D. Wiseman (Shellie), Estill County; one brother, Eugene Wiseman (Nettie), Madison County; five grandchildren: Derick Norton (Jo), Morgan Adekoya (Justin), Hannah Wiseman, Rocky Hix, and Canyon Hix; and two great grandchildren: Hagen Norton and Levi Norton.
    He is preceded in death by one sister, Amanda Louise Wiseman.
    Memorial Services will be held at a later date.

    Paul was born September 5, 1970 in Lexington, a son to Linda Collins and the late Leonard Collins. He was brick mason, and in his spare time he enjoyed fishing. He attended the Beattyville Church of God.
    Along with his wife; Becky Collins, he is survived by mother, Linda Collins of Irvine; one son, Eric Coon of Lexington; one daughter, Nickia Carpenter (Dustin) of Beattyville; three brothers: Tommy Collins (Henrietta) of Richmond, Michael Collins of Irvine, and Shane Collins (Denise) of Booneville; and a host of nieces and nephews and many other loving family members and friends.
    He was preceded in death by his father; Leonard Collins.
    Visitation was held Wednesday, September 11, 2019 from 11:00 to 1:00 at the Booneville Funeral Home, followed by funeral services at 1:00 p.m. with Brother Jesse Acosta officiating. He will be laid to rest beside his father in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Booneville.

Bobby G. Thomas

    Bobby G. Thomas, 64 of Leavenworth, Kansas, passed away Friday, September 6, 2019, at Cushing Hospital.
    He was born May 28, 1955, in Paris, Kentucky.
    Bobby was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Sarah Barnes.
    He worked in the oil business for over 40 years. He was a member of the Eastern Kansas Oil and Gas Association, where he served as president for two years. Bobby was a life member of the NRA. He enjoyed farm life and working on the farm.
    Bobby is survived by his wife of 30 years, Janice Thomas; his five children, James Thomas (Connie), Fordsville, Kentucky, Linda Gail Thomas of Irvine, Bobby Dwayne Thomas (Jessica) of Lawrence, Kansas, Marsha Renee Thomas of Irvine, and Robert A. Thomas of Leavenworth, Kansas; his brother, Robert T. Barnes; and eight grandchildren.
    Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2019, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. A funeral service will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.

Lyndale “Bud” Hall

    Lyndale “Bud” Hall, age 57, of Richmond, Kentucky, passed away Saturday, August 31, 2019, at his residence.
    He was born February 19, 1962, in Madison County, Kentucky, to Lenville Hall and the late Elizabeth Moore Hall. Bud was a retired tool & die maker at PK Tools and was an avid fisherman and hunter. He enjoyed the outdoors and spending time with his family, whom he loved dearly. He was of the Baptist faith.
    In addition to his father, Lenville, survivors include two daughters, Jessica Lynn Hall and Brandy Renee Hall Prather, both of Richmond; three sisters, Linda Hall Brumagen, Debbie Hall and Janet Johnson (Garry) all of Richmond; two brothers, Timothy Hall (Carolyn) of Richmond and Johnathan Hall (Theresa) of Winchester; six grandchildren, Jordan Hall, Alana Bratcher, Jaxson Johns, Abigail Johns, Amirra Prather and Wesley Johns; and a step-son, Corey Cope; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
    In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by a brother, Michael Wayne Hall; and a step-son, Dwayne Bratcher.
    Visitation will be Friday, September 13, 2019, from 5 to 9 p.m. at Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home, 1110 Barnes Mill Road, Richmond.Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 14th at the funeral home, with Vester Alexander officiating. Burial will follow at the Cobb Hill Cemetery in Irvine.
    His grandson, brothers, and nephews will serve as pallbearers.

Estill County GearUp tours Baptist Health Richmond

The Estill County Berea College GEAR UP Opportunity Program and the Estill County Middle School Youth Services Center recently partnered with Baptist Health in Richmond, KY to expose ECMS students to a variety careers. Students took a tour of the hospital and spoke with employees about their jobs. Students learned about many career opportunities and even got to speak to a helicopter pilot and flight nurses.
