Eva Pearl Mastin, 78

Eva Pearl Mastin, age 78, of Franklin, Indiana, passed away on Wednesday evening, September 11, 2019.
She was born on August 17, 1941 in Ravenna, Kentucky to Alfred “Doc” and Bertha Tipton Dunaway. Eva was a 1959 graduate of Estill County High School in Kentucky. She married Lewis Mastin on August 17, 1958. He lovingly survives. She was employed by ArvinMeritor in Franklin, retiring after many years of dedicated service.
Eva enjoyed working in her flower beds. She loved and cherished the time spent with her husband, children and grandchildren.
She is also survived by son, Michael Mastin (Suzanne) and daughters, Donna Baker (Pat) and Kelly Mastin. She is survived by her grandchildren, Luke, Kyle and Kurt Mastin, Jess Perkins (Lance), Dan Baker, and Kris Mastin; and brothers, Damon Dunaway and Nelson Dunaway (Judy).
Mrs. Mastin was preceded in passing by her parents, Alfred “Doc” and Bertha Dunaway; brothers, L.C., Ray, Paul, Glenn and Millard “Dood”; and sisters, Kathrine Kincaid and Ted Gentry.
Rev. Tim Gephart conducted a celebration of Eva’s life on Monday, September 16, 2019, at 3:00 p.m. at Flinn and Maguire Funeral Home, 2898 North Morton Street, (U.S. 31 North) in Franklin, Indiana. Friends called on Monday, September 16 from 12:00 Noon to time of service at 3:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial was at Hopewell Cemetery in Franklin, Indiana.

Carolen Kite Jones, age 73 of West Chester, Ohio, formerly of Clay City, Kentucky, passed away Tuesday, September 23, 2019, at the West Chester Hospital.
She was born in Estill County, September 23, 1946 to English and Hazel Lillian Watson Willoughby. She was a retired truck driver and a member of the church of God.
Mrs. Jones is survived by a son, Glenn Wade of Lee County; a daughter, Kimberly Chambers of Ohio; three grandchildren, and a brother, Larry Willoughby of Stanton
She was preceded in death by her parents, English and Hazel Willoughby, her husband, Donald Jones; a daughter, Tammy Caudill; a brother, Mike Fugate; and two sisters: Anna Elkins and Wandella Congleton.
Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, September 27, 2019 at the Grayson Funeral Home Chapel in Clay City with Bro. Kenny Wasson officiating. Friends visited Friday from 11:00 a.m. 'till time of the service. Burial was in the Rose Cemetery in Stanton.

James William “Jim” Broaddus, 91

James William “Jim” Broaddus, age 91, of Brodhead, Kentucky, died on Sunday, September 22, 2019.
Jim was born in Irvine Kentucky on February 3, 1928 and was the last surviving child of eight children born to Dr. Beverly S. and Lula May (Congleton) Broaddus. He graduated from Estill County High School in 1946, Centre College in 1955, and the University of Kentucky in 1977.
He served in the United States Navy from 1950 until he was honorably discharged in 1954.
On March 30, 1953 he married Virginia Stevens of Brodhead and together they had three children, Ann Katherine Griffen, James Colson Broaddus, and Matthew William Broaddus. Jim was a teacher who began his career in 1949 at Marble Yard School, a one-room country school in Estill County, and retired as an Associate Professor from Indiana State University in 1995.
Jim enjoyed academic writing and the high point of his scholarship resulted in the publication of a book that critically examined Edmund Spenser’s epic poem The Faerie Queene, which is an allegorical tale celebrating the Tudor dynasty and Queen Elizabeth I. He was an avid reader and enthusiastic member of the The Bittersweet Readers Club.
He was a very proud grandfather of Andrew Griffen, Elisabeth Broaddus, and Daniel Broaddus and his wife Kayla.
Jim is survived by his devoted wife Virginia and children Ann Katherine, Matthew and his wife Angela, along with many nieces and nephews, and a large and loving group of Stevens family brothers and sisters-in-law.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Beverly and Lula Broaddus; his sisters, Louise Maxson, Margaret Wickersham, Rowena Lorentzson, Beverly Jean Parker, and Irene Broaddus; his brothers, Edward and Charles Broaddus; and his son, James Colson Broaddus.
Visitation will be Friday, September 27, 2019, starting at 6:00 p.m. at Marvin E. Owens Home for Funerals, 148 West Main Street, Brodhead. Funeral services will be Saturday, September 28 at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Maretburg Cemetery, Rockcastle County.

Stephen Rae Farthing, age 69, of Langley, Kentucky, husband of Emma Bates Farthing, passed away Thursday, September 19, 2019 at his residence.
He was born December 2, 1949 in Indiana, a son of the late Ira Raymond Farthing (Oeida) and Ruby White Pollett (Roy). He was a member of the Graceway United Methodist Church, a member of the Gideons and a retired Grocery Store Manager.
In addition to his wife, Emma, he is survived by two sons: Stephen Farthing II (Toni), Paducah; and Dr. Kevin Farthing (Youtha), Prestonsburg; three daughters: Sandra Hall (Reggie), Prestonsburg; Samantha Farthing, Elsmere; and Kellie Farthing, Winchester; two sisters: Roetta Farthing, Lexington; and Anita Jenkins, Irvine; 12 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Carolyn Gault.
The funeral service was conducted Sunday, September 21, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. in the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, Kentucky, with Roy Harlow officiating. Burial followed in the Gethsemane Gardens, Prestonsburg. Visitation was from 6 until 9 p.m., Friday, September 19th and 1 p.m. until 9 p.m., Saturday, September 20th at the funeral home.
Eunice Hutchison Witt, 95

Eunice Hutchison Witt, 95, wife of Theodore Ray Witt, passed away Sunday, September 22, 2019.
Eunice was born in Irvine, Kentucky, August 29, 1924, to the late Clarence and Jennie Hutchison. She was a graduate of Irvine High School, class of 1942. She worked in the insurance business for 33 years, the majority of which were for the Estill Insurance Agency. She also worked as the City Clerk for the City of Irvine for 10 years, before retiring in 1986. She was a current member of River Drive Christian Church and a former member of the First Baptist Church in Irvine. She had served as a Sunday school teacher and she sang in the choir. She loved to cook for her family and others, and enjoyed sending cards for special occasions to those she knew.
She was preceded in death by a son, Danny R. Witt; a granddaughter, Heather Witt; her parents, Clarence and Jennie Hutchison; two brothers, Clarence Hutchison Jr. and William Elmore; and a sister, Wanda Thomas.
Mrs. Witt is survived by her husband of 73 years, Ray; a daughter, Janie Stone (Ryan); a granddaughter, DeAnna Neal (Brian); two great grandchildren, Shelby and Jacob Neal; a sister, Emma Lee Hood; a sister-in-law, Sadia Elmore; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be Thursday, September 26, 2019, 11:00 a.m., at River Drive Christian Church, Irvine, Kentucky, with burial to follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Wednesday, September 25, 2019, 6:00-8.30 p.m., at Lewis-Abner Home for Funerals in Irvine.

Mayfra Fike Binegar, 85, of Bay View, Ohio, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family, on September 20, 2019. May was born on November 22, 1933 in Estill County, Kentucky.
She was preceded in death by the love of her life, the Rev. Virgil L. Binegar; parents Hargis and Dowthula Dixon Fike; brothers: Delbert, Elmer, Glyndon, Graydon, and Gayle Fike; sisters: Beatrice and Opal Fike, Rachel Kelly, and Thetus Flynn; and grandson, Edward “Eddie” Huber.
Mrs. Binegar is survived by sons: Dean Flynn (Lena Kay) and Jerry Flynn (Charlotte); daughters: Cindy Porter (Wayne), Cora Freeh (Mark), and Leslie Huber (Warren); and brothers: Garrett Fike (Wilma) and Marcum Fike (Rachel); and grandchildren: Tricia Ebner (Doug), Lena Marie Fuller (Brad), Kris Flynn (Megan), Cory Flynn (Amy), Jerry Jr. Flynn (Jenny), Jackie Flynn, Joleen Solis (Juan), Jessica Coulter (Mark), Caitlin Tyler (Timothy), Patrick Freeh (Mary), Kathleen Anne Freeh; Brett, Ashley May, and Jacob Huber; 17 loving great grandchildren and two great, great grandchildren. She was also loved and cherished by many nieces and nephews.
Friends and family called from 4:30-6:30 p.m., Monday, September 23, 2019, at Ransom Funeral & Cremation Service, 610 South Washington Street, Castalia, Ohio, where the funeral service was held immediately following calling hours at 7:00 p.m. Rev. Ryan Brown officiated. Graveside service and burial took place Tuesday, September 24th at Cochran Cemetery in Washington Courthouse, Ohio at 12 Moon.

Amanda Lois Smith McKinney, 87

Amanda Lois Smith McKinney was born March 28, 1932 in Jackson County, Kentucky, and departed this life Sunday, September 15, 2019 in Flintstone, Maryland, being 87 years of age. She was the daughter of the late Allen and Dema Lainhart Harrison.
Lois is survived by three sons, Larry C. Smith (Sally) of McKee, Phillip Smith (Connie) of Sand Gap and Gary E. Smith (Cindy) of Flintstone, Maryland. She is also survived by a step-daughter, Roseanne Smith of Estill County. Lois is survived by eleven grandchildren, several great grandchildren and several great, great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, Lois was preceded in death by a son, Belford Smith; a grandson, Charles Smith; and by her siblings, Jackie Gay, Elmo, Jr., Lincoln, Burnard, Everett, Freddie Lee, Dora Lee and Vera Harrison.
Lois was a member of the Waneta Church of God.
The funeral service was at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, September 21, 2019 at Lakes Funeral Home in McKee with Bro. Jason Elam and Bro. Mitchell Ball officiating. Visitation was from 12:00 Noon until service time.
Martha Ellen Flanery Frisby, 90
Martha Ellen Flanery Frisby, age 90, passed away Wednesday, September 18, 2019 at Diversicare of Oak Ridge in Tennessee following a short illness.
She was born November 1, 1928 in Estill County to the late William Columbus Flanery and Susan Horn Flanery. She was a homemaker and attended the Calvary Baptist Church in Middletown, Ohio.
Mrs. Frisby was preceded in death by her husband, George Thomas Frisby.
She is survived by one daughter, Brenda Ruth Lodwick, Tennessee; two sons: Danny Ray Frisby, Tennessee; and Larry Thomas Frisby, Campbellsville; one sister, Norma Flanery, Winchester; ten grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren.
Mrs. Frisby is preceded in death by three sisters, Jewell Aldridge, Gloria Newman, and Betty Flanery; and two brothers: James Flanery and Lindburg Flanery.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday, September 22, 2019, 2:00 p.m., at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home by Bro. Larry Frisby. Burial followed in the West Irvine Cemetery. Friends called after 12:00 Noon, Sunday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers were Ronnie Flanery, Jeff Lodwick, Matt Owens, James Frisby, Durand Henriques and Rick Lodwick.

Estill Ray South, age 85, of Grand Avenue in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Tuesday, September 17, 2019 at the VA Hospital in Lexington following a long illness.
He was born September 10, 1934 in Hazard, Kentucky to the late Polk South and Elvira Gabbard South. He was a retired engineer from CSX and was a member of the Mt. Carmel Christian Church. He was a United States Navy veteran and lived in Estill County since 1985.
Mr. South is survived by his wife, Mary Bailey South, Estill County; three sons: Anthony Ray South, Florida; Mark Bradley Tudor, Estill County; and Richard Hill Tudor, Mississippi; eleven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Opal Mayo and Geraldine Sturdivant; and one brother, Otis South
Graveside services were conducted Tuesday, September 24, 11:00 a.m., at Sunset Memorial Gardens by Bro. Mark Pearson.

Harry Walling, age 86 of Franklin, Ohio, passed away Sunday, September 15, 2019 at his residence.
Harry was born on Sunday, November 13th, 1932 in Irvine, Kentucky to the late George and Elizabeth Rucker Walling. He was retired from Miami Valley News and was a member of Masonic Lodge #55 F & AM, Franklin, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Carol Walling on Monday, October 19, 2015, and his son, Harry James "Jim" Walling on Tuesday, February 7, 2007.
Harry is survived by his children, Randy Walling, Scotty Walling (Kathi), Carol Clendenin (Scott), and Kenny Walling (Charity); daughters-in-law, Robin Walling and Billie Walling; grandchildren: Hilary Hipsher, Tara Salley, Amber Walling, Matthew Walling, Jessica Nicole Walling, Amy Beatty, Nikki Bowermaster, Stephanie Day, Gary Clendenin, Olivia Clendenin, and Kaitlyn Walling; great grandchildren: Peyton Hipsher, Ryan Nicole Griffith, Levi Wilmont, Kooper Mccloud, Kruz Minton, Savana Sheets, Isaac Day and Ireland Day; and his sister, Barb Henry.

The Estill County Berea College GEAR UP Opportunity Program and the Estill County Middle School Youth Services Center recently partnered with Baptist Health in Richmond, KY to expose ECMS students to a variety careers. Students took a tour of the hospital and spoke with employees about their jobs. Students learned about many career opportunities and even got to speak to a helicopter pilot and flight nurses.
