Jean Spencer Smith, 81
|
Jean Spencer Smith, age 81, of 7th Street, Ravenna, Kentucky, passed away Monday, March 16, 2020, at the Compassionate Care Center in Richmond, following a long illness.
She was born March 7, 1939, in Rogers, Kentucky, the daughter of the late Shelby and Margaret Hounshell Spencer. She was a member of Salem Baptist Church at Spout Springs in Estill County. She was a former employee of Parker Seals during the late 1950’s. She was a retired bookkeeper, having worked for Brewer’s Chevrolet, Williard Brandenburg Chevrolet, Bunt Gross Chevrolet, Layne Brothers Ford; as wells as car dealerships throughout Central and Eastern Kentucky. She served as an executive assistant to Major General Charles Beach, Jr. of Beattyville. She also worked as an office manager for former county attorney Phillip Owens and as bookkeeper for the Lee County Nursing Home.
Mrs. Smith served, alongside her husband of 62 years, as a faithful and devoted pastor’s wife at Heidelberg Baptist Church in Heidelberg, Stone Coal Baptist Church in Lee County, Friendship Baptist Church in Irvine, and Nada Mission in Powell County. She also served, alongside her husband, in the Director of Missions’ offices of the Enterprise Baptist Association and Boone’s Creek Baptist Association. She was a member of Women on Mission and enjoyed missions’ outreach. She blessed countless lives through her many years of faithful service. She was a gracious, hospitable host, turning her home into a community gathering place in all the places she lived.
She is preceded in death by her brother, Paul Daymon Spencer, of Rogers, Kentucky.
Mrs. Smith is survived by her husband, James F. Smith of Ravenna; sons: Jerry Smith (Dianne) of Irvine, and Jeff Smith of Ravenna; siblings, Kenneth Spencer (Anna Jo) of Smiths Grove Kentucky; Jim Spencer (Becky) of Middletown, Ohio; Susan Davis (Bruce) of Beavercreek, Ohio; Joyce Willadean Keating (the late Robert) of Clay City; and Barbara Spencer (the late Daymon) of Rogers; grandchildren: Phillip Smith (Julie) of Lexington, Matthew Smith of Richmond, Kristin Gilvin of Milton, Florida; and Shelby Smith of Lexington; and a host of family and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, March 19, 2020, 11:00 a.m. at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home by Bro. Jerry Smith. A separate graveside service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. at the Spencer family cemetery in Rogers. Friends may call between 6 and 9 p.m., Wednesday, March 18th at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Danny Barnett, James Winkler, Mark Barnett, Jimmy Stone, Bruce Davis, and Brad Epperson.

Bobby Gene “Pete” Dawes, 83

Bobby Gene “Pete” Dawes, age 83, of Rose Street in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Sunday, March 15, 2020, at his home following a long illness.
He was born March 27, 1936 in Estill County and was the son of the late Sidney and Mattie Jane Edmonson Griffin. He was a retired CSX employee and had lived in Estill County all his life. He was a member of the Irvine First Christian Church and a former member of the Estill County Golf Club.
Mr. Dawes is survived by his wife, Della Horn Dawes; two sons: Bobby G. Dawes, Jr. (Kimberly) and Phillip Dawes (Lori), both of Estill County; two step-children: Jennifer Neal Finan (Dustin), Powell County; and Tim Neal, Nicholasville; one sister, Jessie Rose (Jerry), Madison County; two brothers: Harlan “JuBall” Dawes (Carol), Georgetown; and Jackie Griffin (Betty), Estill County; four grandchildren: Megan Cosby (Eric), Hailey Dawes, Alyssa Hall (Chad) and Chesney Bingham (Josh); several great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, March 17, 2020, 1:00 p.m., at the Irvine First Christian Church by Bro. Greg Humpert. Burial will be at the West Irvine Cemetery. Friends may call from 11:00 a.m., Tuesday until service time at 1:00 p.m. at the church.
Pallbearers will be Steve Roberts, Anthony Rucker, Marty Snowden, Charlie Royalty, Tim Worrell and Josh Bingham.
Honorary pallbearers will be Verlon Prewitt, Donald Handy, James Brackett and Larry Stephenson.

Jewell Castle, 75

Jewell Noland Castle, age 75, of Richmond, Kentucky, passed away Tuesday, March 10, 2020 at the University of Kentucky Hospital in Lexington.
Born November 3, 1944 in Irvine, Kentucky, she was the daughter of Clarence Dudley and Amanda Fike Noland, both of whom preceded her in death. Jewell was a retired loan officer at Citicorp and she attended White Oak Pond Christian Church.
Jewell was a loving mother, grandmother and wife, and she is survived by her husband, Jasper Castle; one son, Marty Castle (Esther) of Florida; two sisters, Doris McCray of Lexington, and Wilma Pugh of Irvine; one brother, Walter Noland (Phyllis) of Irvine; her grandchildren, Ashtin Bolden (Tim) and Nicholas Castle; and her great grandchildren, Brayden and Addison Bolden.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Jeffrey Lee Castle; and two brothers, Charles Noland and C.D. Noland.
Funeral service for Jewell was held at 12:00 Noon on Saturday, March 14, 2020 at Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home, with Bro. Flynn Rodgers officiating. Burial followed in the Richmond Cemetery. Visitation was from 10:00 a.m. until service time at Noon on Saturday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers were Marty Castle, Nicholas Castle, Brayden Bolden, Keith Castle, Tim Brown, and Mark Warren

Margaret McIntosh Cumpton, 57, of Greenup, Kentucky, passed away on Friday, March 13, 2020, at King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.
She was born on August 1, 1962, in Louisville, Kentucky, to the late Arthur and Emma Tipton McIntosh.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Cumpton was preceded in death by one brother, Arthur Edward McIntosh; and two sisters, Doris McIntosh Fox and Mary Katherine Bowlin.
Mrs. Cumpton was a former CNA for various nursing homes but her main occupation that she truly enjoyed was being a homemaker. Margaret was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Her grandchildren were her world. To all her nieces and nephews she was affectionately known as, “Sissy”. Mrs. Cumpton was also a member of Christian Faith Outreach in Ashland.
She is survived by her loving husband of 36 years, Timothy O. Cumpton of Greenup; one son, Timothy Ryan Cumpton and Melissa Byrd of Greenup; one daughter, Brittany Sharlene Tomlin (Ronald) of Greenup; four grandchildren: Christian and Emma Tomlin, and Joy and Timothy James Cumpton; one brother, Robert Byron McIntosh of Ravenna; one sister, Janet Marie Walters (Bill) of Ravenna; and a host of extended family and friends.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 18, 2020, at Bailey Family Funeral Home, 2110 Argillite Road in Flatwoods, with Pastor Gene Easterling officiating. Burial will follow at Palmer Cemetery in Flatwoods. Visitation will be from 6 – 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 17th and one hour before the service on Wednesday at the funeral home.
Hope Marcum, 71

Hope Marcum was born March 4, 1949 in Jackson County, Kentucky, and departed this life Tuesday, March 10, 2020 at her residence in London, being 71 years of age. She was the daughter of the late Stanton & Velma (Reece) Marcum.
Hope is survived by her daughter, Vickie Sparks of London, Kentucky; two brothers, Elmon Marcum of Madison County and Jackie Marcum of Jackson County; and by three sisters, Carolyn Brandenburg and Mina Joy Marcum, both of Rockcastle County; and Lorena Newman of Estill County. Hope was blessed with three grandsons, Brent Huff, Clay Hays and Cody Muncy; and by two great grandchildren, Tidus Hays and Alivia Huff.
In addition to her parents, Hope was preceded in death by her son, Gary Wayne Sparks; a brother, Dennis Dotson Marcum; and a sister, Mary Katherine Isaacs.
Funeral service was at 2:00 p.m., Friday, March 13, 2020 at Lakes Funeral Home McKee with Bro. Shane Gabbard officiating. Burial followed in the Marcum Cemetery.
Jeffrey R. Gilbert, 49

Jeffrey R. Gilbert, age 49, of Richmond, Kentucky, passed away Sunday, March 8, 2020 at the Hospice Care Plus Compassionate Care Center after a three-year battle with cancer. He was the husband for more than 22 years to Teffany Purcell Gilbert.
He was native of Powell County, Kentucky, born November 9, 1970, the son of Marie Goodpaster Gilbert and the late Bobby Ray Gilbert. Jeffrey was a 1988 graduate of Powell County High School where he was a member of the Chess Club. He later worked in banking and as a bus driver.
He is survived by his wife, Teffany Purcell Gilbert; one son, Luke Gilbert; his mother, Marie Goodpaster Gilbert; one sister, Kim Gilbert; and one brother, Brad Gilbert; in addition to numerous other relatives and friends.
A private visitation and memorial service for family and close friends will be held Sunday, April 19, 2020, 2-5 p.m., at Mount Vernon, Kentucky.

Randy Glen Horn, age 61, of 3rd Street in Ravenna, Kentucky, passed away Sunday, March 8, 2020, at his home.
He was born December 3, 1958 in Madison County and was the son of the late Earl and Wanda Lynn Tipton Horn. He was a carpenter and had lived in Estill County all his life.
Mr. Horn is survived by one sister, Marilyn Cornett (Gary), Stamping Ground; and one brother, Chris Horn, Ravenna.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Greg Horn.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday, March 12, 2020, 1:00 p.m., at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home by Bro. Chris Green. Burial was at the Sunset Memorial Gardens. Friends called between 6 and 9 p.m., Wednesday, March 11th at the funeral home.
Pallbearers were Donald Paul McIntosh, Billy Horn, Donnie Tipton, Terry Horn, Brandon Hobbs, Kevin Bryant and Curtis Cole.
Wanda Lyne Horn, 80

Wanda Lyne Horn, age 80, of 3rd Street in Ravenna, Kentucky, passed away Sunday, March 8, 2020, at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville, following a long illness.
She was born May 18, 1939 in Estill County and was the daughter of the late Buford and Virginia McIntosh Tipton. She was a former employee of Carhartt, Inc. and retired from the Estill County School System. She was a member of the Cow Creek Baptist Church and a former member of the Eastern Star. She had lived in Estill County all her life.
Mrs. Horn was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Horn.
She is survived by one daughter: Marilyn Cornett (Gary), Stamping Ground; one son, Chris Horn, Ravenna; three sisters: Shirley Horn, Irvine; Eldora Abney and
Drucilla Tipton, both of Dayton, Ohio; two brothers: Elwood Tipton, Irvine; and Elza Tipton, Winchester; six grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons: Randy and Greg Horn.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday, March 12, 2020, 1:00 p.m., at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home by Bro. Chris Green. Burial was at the Sunset Memorial Gardens. Friends called between 6 and 9 p.m., Wednesday, March 11th at the funeral home.

Darrell Lee Todd, age 69, of Lee Court in Richmond, Kentucky, passed away Friday, March 6, 2020 at the Compassionate Care Center following a long illness.
He was born October 14, 1950 in Estill County to the late Elmer Todd and Lillian Estes Todd. He retired from Trane and was a member of the Ravenna Nazarene Church. He was a former member of the Sons of the American Legion. He lived in Estill County most of his life.
Mr. Todd is survived by his wife of 51 years, Pamela R. Berryman Todd; two sons: Michael Lewis Todd (Melinda), Richmond; and Jeffery Darrell Todd (Margaret), Tennessee; two grandchildren: John Thaddeus Todd and Katherine Grace Todd; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Meredith Jane Dunaway and Melba Jean Blevins Bush; and onr brother, Daniel Lewis Todd.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday, March 9, 2020, 1:00 p.m., at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home by Bro. Larry Frymyer. Friends may call after 12:00 Noon, Monday until service time at the funeral home. Friends may call from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Sunday, March 8th at the funeral home.

Dovie Catherine Peters Boyd, age 83, widow of Ike Boyd Jr., passed away Thursday, March 5, 2020 at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington.
She was a native of Estill County, a daughter of the late Willie and Rhode Lynch Peters.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her sons: David Roberts and Benjamin Roberts; her siblings: T.J. Peters, Mafrey Mays, and Hallie Mae Rosenbaum; and her half-siblings: Elbert Jamison, Monk Jamison, Charlie Jamison, Claude Jamison, and Irene Duncan.
Survivors include her children: Ike Boyd (Joni) and Alfred Jason Boyd; her grandchildren: Ashley Fox (Stephen), Ike Boyd IV (Drema), April Boyd, T.J. Boyd, Tyler Boyd (Samantha), and Tiffany Boyd; her great grandchildren: Elijah Boyd, Charity Boyd, Emma Boyd, and Haylee Boyd; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, March 9, 2020, at Lewis-Abner Home for Funerals. Burial will follow in the South Irvine Cemetery. Friends may call anytime after 6:00 p.m., Sunday, March 8th at the funeral home.

Jutanna Lee Parks, age 70

Jutanna Lee Parks, age 70, of Clay City, Kentucky, passed away at her residence on Friday, March 6, 2020.
Born in Irvine, she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Carma Profitt Ingram and the widow of Wallace Clark and Chester Parks. Jutanna was a former nurse at Saint Joseph Hospital.
She is survived by her son, Anthony Clark (Kathy) of Winchester; two daughters, LuAnna Brown (Ronnie) of Nancy, Kentucky, and Amy Anderson (Arnold) of Clay City; four stepchildren: Tim Parks, Tim Ritchie, Larcene Powell and Onesia Boyd; two brothers, Donald Ingram of Lexington and David Ingram (Kay) of Mt. Sterling; three grandchildren, Eric Benningfield, Brittany Clark and Audrey Brooks; along with four great grandchildren.
Funeral services officiated by Bro. James Harold Combs will be 3:00 p.m. Sunday, March 8, 2020 at Hearne Funeral Home, 125 West College Avenue, Stanton. Visitation is 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m., Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Salem Cemetery with Billy Brooks, Eric Benningfield, Robert Spears, Douglas Spears, Ronnie Brown and Arnold Anderson serving as pallbearers.
Ollie Mae McIntosh, 89

Ollie Mae McIntosh, age 89, of Lazy Circle Drive in Ooltewah, Tennessee, passed away Wednesday, March 4, 2020, at the Hospice of Chattanooga following a short illness.
She was born May 5, 1930 in Estill County and was the daughter of the late Floyd D. and Martha Puckett Moreland. She was a retired GE employee and attended the Church of God. She had lived in Estill County most of her life.
Mrs. McIntosh was preceded in death by her husband, Hester McIntosh.
She is survived by two daughters: Dian Jager, Missouri; and Loretta Shepard, Tennessee; one son, Richard McIntosh, North Carolina; two sisters: Mary Jane Puckett and Illene Wolfinbarger, both of Estill County; one brother, Floyd D. Moreland Jr., Estill County; 11 grandchildren, several great grandchildren and several great, great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three sisters: Della Ree Moreland, Minnie Golden Moreland, and Susie Tuggle; and two brothers: John and Fred Moreland.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, March 8, 2020, 2:00 p.m. at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be at the Crowe Cemetery. Friends may call from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., Sunday, at the funeral home.
Jeffery Wayne White, 56

Jeffery Wayne White, age 56, of Winchester Road in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Thursday, March 5, 2020, at his home.
He was born October 18, 1963 and was the son of Evelyn Ruth White Cox. He was a farmer and had lived in Estill County all his life.
Survivors in addition to his mother include three sisters: Teresa Devine, Harrodsburg; Jennifer Perez, Wilmore; and Tammy Alwine, Indiana.
Memorial services will be held at a later date.

Beverly Bryant, 70

Beverly Bryant, born January 22, 1950, joined her Heavenly Father, family and friends that have gone before her on Sunday, March 1, 2020.
Beverly was a member of Heaven’s View Missionary Baptist Church in Russellville. She worked many years as a weaver at the cotton mill.
She is preceded in death by her earthly father, Eugene Wilson Greene; ex-husbands, James Horn and Robert Bryant; brother, Daryl Greene; and nephew, Phillip Atkins.
She is survived by her mother, Lena Mae Johnson; children, Mike Horn (Lana) and Tony (Murphy) Horn; brothers, Gary Greene (Terri), Terry Greene(Maxine), and Larry Greene; a half-brother, Johnny Greene; sisters, Brenda Sutton (Danny), Gloria Collier (Clyde), Angie Abunijem, and Sandy Mullins (Jimmy); grandchildren, James Michael Horn, Joseph and Joshua Horn, and Stacy Horn Pesut; and a great grandchild, Madelynn Pesut; along with several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.
The family would like to give a special thanks to University of Tennessee Hospice.
The family received friends on Tuesday, March 3, 2020 from 5 – 7 p.m. in the chapel of Stetzer-Bales Funeral Home. A funeral service followed with Rev. Terry Greene and Rev. George McCoy officiating.

George Delbert Kirby, 84, of Corbin, Kentucky, formerly of Irvine, widower of Georgia Frances Hoover Kirby, passed away Sunday, March 1, 2020, after a long illness.
Mr. Kirby was a native of Estill County, born December 14, 1934, the son of the late Clarence and Alice Farthing Kirby. He was a retired heavy equipment operator for the Southeast Coal Company.
He was preceded in death by his brothers: Arnold Underwood Kirby, Clarence Kirby, and Willard Kirby; his sister, Betty Kirby; and a grandson, Shannon Carl Kirby.
Survivors include his sons: Delbert Preston Kirby (Betty), and Dana Hoover; his sister, Elsie Gibson; his grandchildren: Preston Kirby (Pamela), Brian Kirby (Lindsey), Rhonda Hoover, Steve Hoover, Jody Hoover, and James Hoover; and several great grandchildren.
Services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, March 8, 2020, at Lewis-Abner Home for Funerals. Burial will follow in the Sunset Memorial Gardens. Friends may call anytime after 1:00 p.m., until service time.

Jessie Mae Caudill, 87

Jessie Mae Caudill, age 87, of Rice Station Road in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Sunday, March 1, 2020, at the Irvine Health & Rehabilitation Center.
She was born February 28, 1933 in Morning Sun, Ohio and was the daughter of the late Banford and Emma Berryman Estes. She was a former cook at the Marcum & Wallace Memorial Hospital and was a member of the Rice Station Christian Church.
Mrs. Caudill was preceded in death by her husband, Francis Edward Caudill; four sisters: Rebecca Puckett, Mildred Fry, Opal Serio, and Anna Belle Pervus; and two brothers: Edward and William Estes.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held at a later date.
