Charles Darren Lakes

    Charles Darren Lakes of Irvine, Kentucky, born July 9, 1968, passed away on October 17, 2020 at Baptist Health Lexington. Charles was a caregiver for many years and a member of the basketball team during his high school years. He was also a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Irvine.
    Charles had many family and friends who loved him dearly. He was a wonderful uncle and a lover of life.
    Survivors include one sister, Teresa Lakes; one brother, Rickie Lakes (Carroll); and several nieces and nephews, all of Richmond Ky.
    A memorial service will be held at a later date..

    Mark H. Richard, age 50, passed away Sunday, October 18, 2020 at the University of Kentucky Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky.
    He was born in Irvine, October 23, 1969 to William H. Richard and Wandalyn Tipton Macy. He was a self-employed handyman.
    Mark is survived by his mother, Wandalyn Macy, and her husband, Jackie Macy Sr. of Irvine; a brother, William S. Richard (Catherine) Irvine; a stepbrother, Jackie Lee Macy Jr. of Aurora, Colorado; and a stepsister, Sara Lykins (James) of Los Angeles, California.
    Graveside services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 21, 2020 at the Oakdale Cemetery in Irvine with Bro. Steve Evans officiating.

Theodore “Ted” Rawlins, Jr.

    Theodore “Ted” Rawlins, Jr., age 74, passed away on Saturday, October 17, 2020 at home surrounded by his family.
    Ted was born on January 20, 1946 in Estill County, Kentucky, and was the son of Theodore Rawlins, Sr. and Opal Turner Rawlins, both of whom preceded him in death. He was a retired auto mechanic with Bargers' Wrecker Service and attended the Richmond House of Prayer. Ted was an avid hunter and fisherman.
    Survivors include his wife, Sue Carol Moore Rawlins; six sons, Teddy Lee Rawlins (Vickie), Michael James Rawlins (Wilma), Leslie Wayne Rawlins, Randolph Scott Rawlins, Ernest Ray Rawlins (Marlen), and Terry Dale Rawlins (Jennifer); one daughter, Ines Marie Walters (Mark); one sister, Delana Tipton; and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Billy Ray Rawlins, and three sisters, Norma Walton, Provie Kirby, and Mary Lou Schrader.
    Visitation will be from 5:00 – 9:00 p.m. at Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 20, 2020. A funeral service for Mr. Rawlins will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 21st at the Richmond House of Prayer with Bro. Owen Moody officiating. Burial will follow at Madison County Memorial Gardens.
    Pallbearers will be Teddy Rawlins, Leslie Rawlins, Randy Rawlins, Ernie Rawlins, Scottie Rawlins, and Brandon Rawlins.

Margaret Ann "Peggy" Benedict, 102

Margaret Ann (Peggy) Benedict,

    Margaret Ann "Peggy" Benedict, a former resident of Irvine and a former teacher at Estill County High School, died at the age of 102 on Saturday, October 3, 2020.
    Mrs. Benedict was born in Paintsville, Kentucky on July 30, 1918 to her parents, Irene LaViers and John Paul Sellers, Sr. She continued spending her summers there with her grandmother, Mrs. Henry LaViers even after her family moved to Columbus, Ohio. She spent her early life in Columbus, graduating from Upper Arlington High School and Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. While attending OSU, she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, and she met her future husband, James R. Benedict. During World War II, while her husband was serving as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army Corp of Engineers, she worked for Curtis Wright as a draftsman.
    When the war ended, the Benedicts moved to Wellston, Ohio, where Mr. Benedict worked for Benedict, Inc., a strip mining firm in nearby McArthur, Ohio. In Wellston, they raised their two daughters, were members of the Wellston Methodist Church, served on the Chamber of Commerce, participated in Rotary Club, were members and on the board of Fairgreens Country Club, and campaigned together for Mr. Benedict’s Republican nomination to run for State Senator of Ohio. Mrs. Benedict’s zest for life was evident in her involvement in civic affairs, her dedication to friendships and her love of sports, especially golf. She and her husband rarely missed attending their OSU football games.
    Mrs. Benedict and her family moved to Irvine, when her husband became employed as Superintendent of South-East Coal Company’s processing plant. She later worked there as well. Peggy and her husband loved living in the Bluegrass State and were passionate Keeneland and Derby fans. She was president of the Women’s Central KY Golf Association, winning the coveted Marion Miley cup for her flight. She was a Kentucky Colonel, a member of the Irvine United Methodist Church, an art teacher at Estill County High School, a spirited UK basketball spectator and an enthusiastic community volunteer. She and her husband traveled extensively and finally retired to Pompano Beach, Florida.
    Peggy was known by her vibrant personality and artistic and athletic talents. Well into her 90s, she continued playing golf, teaching art lessons to the residents of her retirement communities and playing bridge three times a week. Mrs. Benedict lived in Auburn, Alabama; Buford and Canton, Georgia in retirement communities until her death.
    She is survived and dearly loved by her daughters, Cheryl Lynn Sullivan and Deborah Benedict Davis; her grandsons, Christopher Ryan Cottengim and James Kyle Cottengim; and her great grandchildren, Taylor, Sydnie and Cooper Cottengim..

    Teresa Kay Congleton, age 61, a resident of the Irvine Nursing & Rehabilitation Center passed away Friday, October 16, 2020, at the Baptist Health Hospital in Richmond, Kentucky, following a long illness.
    She was born August 17, 1959 in Dayton, Ohio and was the daughter of Eugene Hall and the late Ann Kincaid Hall. She attended the Church of God and had lived in Estill County all her life.
    Teresa is survived by her father and stepmother, Eugene and Katherine Hall, Irvine; one daughter, Tonya Congleton; one son, Ruford Congleton; three sisters: Lois Jean Campbell, Lexington; Sondra Strange, Mt. Sterling; and Carol Estes, Lawrenceburg; three brothers: Mark Hall, Stanton; Brian Hall, North Carolina; and Stacy Hall, Mt. Vernon; one stepsister, Kimberly Bates, Louisville; and several grandchildren.
    She was preceded in death by oneson, Russell Banks.
    Graveside services will be conducted Monday, October 19, 2020, at 1:00 p.m., at the Cobb Hill Cemetery by Bro. Elwood Patrick. Visitation will be held Monday from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home.

Johnny Ray Ashcraft

    Johnny Ray Ashcraft, age 67, passed away Monday, October 12, 2020, at his home in Beattyville, Kentucky.
    He was born February 23, 1953 in Beattyville, a son to the late Edward Thornton and Rachel Irene (Ross) Ashcraft. He was a lock master, working for Kentucky River Authority. He loved being outdoors, and spending time by the Kentucky River.
    Along with his wife of 45 years, Rose Marie (Thompson) Ashcraft of Beattyville; he is survived by two sons: Johnny Ray Ashcraft Jr. of Beattyville and Sean J. Davis of Irvine; three daughters: Angela Fox (Chris) of Beattyville, Michelle Napier of Clay City, and Jessica Ashcraft of Stanton; two brothers: James Ashcraft (Debbie) of Waco, Kentucky; and John Reece of Beattyville; one sister, Judy Kirby (Tommy) of Irvine; five grandchildren: LeeShana Brandenburg, Kaitlin Hall, Drew Hall, Austin Hogan, and Jayden Holliday; one great grandchild, Kinsley Davis; and many other loving family members and friends.
    He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward Thornton and Rachel Irene (Ross) Ashcraft.
    The family will receive guests from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m., Friday, October 16, 2020 at the Booneville Funeral Home, 3450 Ky. Hwy. 11 North in Booneville. A memorial service will begin at 4:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

    Peggy Bonny Garrett, age 85, of Geneva Avenue in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Monday, October 12, 2020, at the Willows at Hamburg in Lexington.
    She was born November 3, 1934 in Moberly, Kentucky and was the daughter of the late Arthur Ellis and Myrtle Vinada Clouse Bonny. She was a retired music teacher with the Estill County School System and a member of the Irvine First Christian Church. She was also a member of the Woman’s Club, Kentucky Teacher’s Retirement Association, Kiwanis Club, and the Kentucky Colonels. She performed with the Lexington Singers for over 30 years and belonged to the American Organist Guild.
    Mrs. Garrett was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Mason Garrett.
    She is survived by her daughter, Bonny Clouse Caudill (William), Irvine; two grandchildren: Bonny Jean Caudill and Will Caudill; and one brother, James Bonny, Ohio.
    Mrs. Garrett was preceded in death by nine siblings: Lucille Bonny, Florence Bonny Hall, Ann Bonny Stickley, Jeanette Bonny King, A.W. Bonny, Bill Bonny, Ed Bonny, Thomas Bonny and Gene Bonny.
    Visitation will be held Friday, October 16, 2020 from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home. Private services were conducted Friday, October 16th at the funeral home chapel by Pastor Jim Bonny. Burial was at the Richmond Cemetery.
    In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Peggy Bonny Garrett Senior Music Award at the Estill County High School. Senior Music Award at the Estill County High School.

    Robin Lynn Hedger, age 35, passed away.
    She was born April 20, 1985 in Lexington to Robert Jr. and Linda Hedger.
    Robin is survived by her mother, Linda Hedger of Winchester; three brothers: Robert Hedger III of Irvine, Charles Hall and Benjamin Fay, both of Winchester; and a sister, Misty Barnes of Mt. Sterling.
    She is preceded in death by her father, Robert Hedger Jr.

    Brenda Lea Estes Riddell, age 58, of Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Sunday, October 11, 2020 at Baptist Health in Richmond after a long illness.
    She was born June 5, 1962 in Irvine to Clarence and Ida Mary Johnson Estes.
    Brenda is survived by two sons: Russell Riddell and Joshua Riddell (Sarah), both of Irvine; a daughter, Ladonna Riddell of Irvine; ten grandchildren; a brother, Earl Estes (Lavern) of Irvine; a sister, Earlene Estes (Jacin) of Berea; and several nieces and nephews including her favorite niece, Modi Paige. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Ida Estes; four brothers: Thomas Estes, Billy Estes, Fredrick Estes, and Clarence Estes Jr.; and two sisters: Nina Cassidy and Norma Johnson.
    Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 14, 2020 at the Grayson Funeral Home Chapel, 3905 Richmond Road in Irvine with Bro. Jerry Rose officiating. Friends may visit 12:00 Noon until time of the service.

    Thomas “Tom” Hall, age 79, of Peyton Avenue in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Sunday, October 11, 2020, at his home following a short illness.
    He was born June 11, 1941 in Powell County and was the son of the late Dell and Abby Ann McCoy Hall. He was retired from Bundy Tubing & TI Automotive and had lived in Estill County most of his life.
    Mr. Hall is survived by his wife, Frances Case Hall; one daughter, Jill Hall-Crump (Dan), Johnson County; one son, Greg Hall (Connie), Estill County; one sister, Janice Newcomb, Powell County; three brothers: Marion Hall (Bonnie), Estill County; Raymond Hall, and Danny Hall (Tricha), both of Powell County; three grandchildren: Sophie Wells (Travis), Ethan Thomas Hall and Mark Crump.
    He was preceded in death by one son, Anthony Mark Hall; and two siblings, Mary Durham and Donald Hall.
    Visitation was Thursday, October 15, 2020 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home. Private funeral services were conducted Thursday, October 15th at the funeral home chapel by Bro. Glyndon Woosley. Burial was at the Cobb Hill Cemetery.
    Pallbearers were Gary Case, Dennis Case, Johnny Case, Jim Walton, Mike Tate, Jeff Hall and Bryan Hall.

Ruth Irene Scott Reynolds

    Ruth Irene Scott Reynolds, age 100, widow of Glen Lowell Reynolds, passed away Friday, October 9, 2020 at the Irvine Health and Rehab Center.
    Mrs. Reynolds was a native of Carter County, born April 6, 1920, a daughter of the late John and Bertha Tackett Scott. She was a homemaker and a former dairy farmer.
    She was preceded in death by her son, Danny Lowell Reynolds; and her siblings, Cecil Scott, Opal Scott, Ruby Scott, and Hayden Scott.
    Survivors include her daughters: Carol Ann Haller (Steve) and Bertha Lynn "Bo" McCreary; six grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, and a score of nieces and nephews.
    Services will be held at Lewis-Abner Home for Funerals on Tuesday, October 13, 2020, at 1:00 p.m. Friends may call from 12:00 Noon until service time. Additional services will be held Wednesday, October 14th at 12:00 Noon at the Globe Funeral Chapel, 17277 West US Highway 60, Olive Hill, KY. Burial will follow in the Garvin Ridge Cemetery, Kentucky Highway 2078 in Olive Hill.

    Phyllis Marcum Winkler, age 60, of Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Thursday, October 1, 2020 at her home after a long illness.
    She was born in February, 1960 to the late Ed Arnold and Irene Walling Marcum.
    Mrs. Winkler is survived by her spouse of 41 years, Scotty Winkler Jr. of Irvine; her daughters: Nicole Beall and Natasha Winkler, both of Irvine; her granddaughter, Taryn Beall, Irvine; a sister in law, Denise Meyers (Mike), of Hockley, Texas; and two nieces: Sommer Meyers, Galveston, Texas; and Morgan Meyers of Hockley, Texas. She leaves behind a host of relatives and friends to mourn her passing.
    In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by one sister, Pearl Ann Arthur; three infant siblings; and her in-laws, Scotty and Bernice Winkler.
    There was a celebration of life Saturday, October 10, 2020 at Crooked Creek Christian Church officiated by Bro. Tom Blackburn. Friends and family called between 3-4:00 p.m. with a short service at 4:00 p.m. Her ashes were to be scattered during a private ceremony with immediate family only, at a later date.

    Ronnie Lee Criswell, age 71, of Berea, Kentucky, passed away Thursday, October 8, 2020, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center following a short illness.
    He was born August 9, 1949 in Monticello, Kentucky, and was the son of Doris Criswell Tucker and the late Lyle Doen Criswell. He was a retired United States Marine who served during the Vietnam War.
    Survivors in addition to his mother include his wife, Ima Joyce Lowe Criswell; one daughter, Carrie Hofmeister (Mitch), Michigan; two sons: Michael Criswell (Angie Skaggs), Ohio; and Kyle Criswell (Lori), Pennsylvania; three stepdaughters: Glenova Wiseman, Marsha Riddell, and Rebecca Negron (Eddie), all of Berea; one sister, Jill Criswell, Monticello; two brothers: Steve Criswell and Larry Criswell, both of Monticello; seven grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.
    He was preceded in death by four siblings, Janet Hardy, Pamela Criswell, Dale Criswell and Boyce Ray Dick.
    Friends may call between 6 and 9 p.m., Monday, October 12, 2020 at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home. Private funeral services were conducted Tuesday, October 13th at the funeral home chapel by Bro. Kevin Slemp. Burial was at the Kirby Cemetery.

    Joseph Patrick Pendergest, Jr., age 60, of Patsy Road in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Thursday, October 8, 2020, at the University of Kentucky Hospital in Lexington, following a long illness.
    He was born September 14, 1960 in Cincinnati, Ohio and was the son of the late Joseph Patrick Pendergest, Sr. and Mattie B. Ratcliffe Pendergest. He was a roofer and former member of the National Guard. He attended the Crossroads Church of Christ.
    Mr. Pendergest is survived by his daughter, DaMeida Jo Rogers, Estill County; four sisters: Stella Gray, Carolyn Hall (Jim), Dorita Marcum, and Bernie Abney (Ova), all of Estill County; and two grandchildren: Shawnee and Trevor Rogers.
    He was preceded in death by one sister, Peggy Patrick.
    Friends called between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 Noon, Wednesday, October 14, 2020 at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home. Private funeral services were conducted at the funeral home chapel by Bro. Elwood Patrick with burial at the Cobb Hill Cemetery.

    Ogal Meek Wellman Spicer, age 98, of Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Wednesday, October 7, 2020, at Morning Pointe in Richmond.
    She was born January 1, 1922 in Leighton, Estill County, Kentucky. She was the daughter of Ed and Ida Mays Meek.
    Mrs. Spicer was preceded in death by husbands Linville Wellman and John Spicer.
    She is survived by her daughter Patricia Wellman Wheeler (Erlan); grandchildren: Erlan Wheeler II (Marilyn Ward) and Michelle Wheeler McCort (Mark); ten great grandchildren: Erlan III; Logan, Alexandria, Victoria, Jordan and Justin Wheeler; Mackenzie, Colin, Madison and Camryn McCort; and a sister, Thelma Meek Richardson; plus a multitude of nieces and nephews.
    Mrs. Spicer was preceded in death by her siblings, Ruth Meek Castle, Glyndeen Meek Tipton and Cecil Meek.
    She was an active member of the Irvine Methodist church where she was a Sunday School teacher for many years and a member of their governing board. After her retirement from Carhartt, she was involved in many community activities.
    Graveside services were conducted Friday, October 9, 2020, 2:00 p.m., at the West Irvine Cemetery by Bro. Aaron Batey.

Victor Edwin Cain, 45

    Victor Edwin Cain, age 45, of McKee Road in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Tuesday, October 6, 2020, at University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington.
    He was born October 23, 1974, in Fayette County, a son of the late David Fred and Alma C. Smith Cain. He worked with horses and had lived in Midway, Kentucky most if his life.
    Mr. Cain is survived by three daughters: Elisabeth Cain, Victoria Cain, and Frances Cain, all of Louisville; a sister, Jeannie Burkhead, Scott County; and three brothers: Shannon Cain, Estill County; Ronnie Cain, Madison County; and Danny Cain, Franklin County.
    Memorial services will be held at a later date..
