Naomi Frances Stamper Rawlins

    Naomi Frances Stamper Rawlins, age 87, of Selma, Alabama, formerly of Irvine, Kentucky, departed this life on Saturday, February 12, 2022, at her home in Alabama.
    Born on January 8,1935 in Irvine, to the late Lonnie and Dessie Baker Stamper, Naomi was a retired schoolteacher, artist, basket weaver, and a member of the Irvine Lions Club for several years, as well as a member of the Plantersville Christian Church. She also sang in the Rice Station Christian Church choir and was a member of the Irvine Dulcimer Club.
    In addition to her parents, Mrs. Rawlins is also preceded in death by her husband, David “Doug” Rawlins; one brother, Charles Richard Stamper; and a sister-in-law, Rose Stamper.
    Survivors include one sister, Peggy Crowe (Leo) of Opelika, Alabama; three nephews, Berry Leo Crowe (Barbara), Roy Clay Crowe (Susan), and Charles Bryant Crowe (Lori), all of Alabama; one niece, Mary Frances Reid (Dennis) of Georgia; as well as many other relatives and friends to miss her and mourn her passing.
    Funeral services for Naomi Frances Stamper Rawlins will be conducted on Wednesday, February 16, 2022, at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel of Lewis Home for Funerals with many of the Crowe family officiating. Interment will follow in the Cobb Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. until the service time of 1:00 p.m.

    Joseph Allen Stacy, 75, of Richmond, Kentucky, passed away on Friday, February 11, 2022 at his home.
    Joseph was born on November 5, 1946 in Estill County, and was the son of Dennis and Helen Johnston Stacy, both of whom preceded him in death. He was a retired truck driver, having worked for Barger’s Towing. He was a United States Army veteran of the Vietnam War and was a member of the Harris Memorial Baptist Church.
    Survivors include his wife, Brenda Sue Culton Stacy of Richmond; two sons, Steve Allen Stacy (Teresa) of Richmond, and Justin Scott Stacy, of Berea; one granddaughter, Ava Elizabeth Stacy; three sisters, Joan Murphy, Jen Collins, and Jane Bishop, all of Irvine; and several nieces and nephews.
    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Jack Stacy and Jerry Stacy; and a sister, Judy Stacy,
    A funeral service will be held at Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home, 1110 Barnes Mill Road, Richmond, on Tuesday, February 15, 2022 at 1:00 p.m., with Rev. Ronald Lutes officiating. His nephews will serve as pallbearers. Burial will follow in the Richmond Cemetery. Visitation will be 6-9 p.m. Monday, February 14, 2022 at the funeral home.

Etta J. Sparks

    Etta J. Sparks, age 91, of Irvine, Kentucky, departed this life on Friday, February 11, 2022, at the Baptist Health Facility in Richmond.
    Etta was born on October 28, 1930, in Irvine, to the late Park and Louann Henry Johnson. She was a loving mother, homemaker and a member of the Westside Christian Church.
    In addition to her parents, Miss Sparks was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Sparks Jr.; two sons, Robert Wayne Sparks and William J. Sparks; one brother, J.C. Johnson; a sister, Jean Covey; and a grandson, Steven Sparks.
    She is survived by a son, Michael Edward Sparks Sr. (Tabatha); one sister, Irene Gillespie; three grandchildren, Lisa Michelle Sparks, Michael Edward Sparks Jr., and Christopher J. Sparks; three great grandchildren, Ryan and Kannon Sparks; and Jordan Hamm; a daughter-in-law, Norma Sparks; along with several nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends.
    Funeral services for Etta J. Sparks will be conducted on Monday, February 14, 2022, in the Lewis Home for Funerals chapel with Rev. William P. Covey officiating. Interment will follow in the Oakdale Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until the funeral time of 1:00 p.m., Monday, at the funeral home.

    Diane Lynn Kash, age 72, of Woolly Ridge in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Tuesday, February 8, 2022 at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington.
    She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Ralph Kash of Irvine; two sisters, two brothers, and three stepdaughters, all of Grand Rapids, Michigan.
    There will be a memorial service and interment at a later date in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

    James Edward Vivian, age 75, of Jeffersonville, Kentucky, passed away Wednesday, February 9, 2022.
    He was born in Jeffersonville, November 29, 1946 to Virgil Clay and Susie Vivian. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps and a truck driver.
    Mr. Vivian is survived by his wife, Dorothy Vivian of Jeffersonville; two sons: Marty Vivian (Kristi) of Jeffersonville and Monty Vivian (Teresa) of Irvine; five grandchildren, one great grandchild; a brother, Larry Vivian (Marcelle) of Florida; and a sister, Juanita Vandgrift of Owingsville.
    He was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Susie Vivian; a granddaughter, Becca Vivian; four brothers, Tommy Vivian, Bud Vivian, Gary Vivian, and Carl Vivian; and three sisters, Pauline Hozerland, Francis Combs and Gin Corman.
    Funeral services will be held at 12:00 Noon, Saturday, February 12, 2022 at the Grayson Funeral Home Chapel in Clay City with Bro. Johnny Hurt officiating and Military Rites.     Donald Winkler, age 94 of Estill County, Kentucky, passed away on Monday, February 7, 2022, at the Marcum-Wallace Memorial Hospital in Irvine.
    Donald was born on June 22, 1927, in Estill County, Kentucky and was the son of the late Greeley and Mattie Warford Winkler. He was a retired brick mason and had previously resided in Ohio, before moving back to Estill County.
    Survivors include a daughter, Sandi Postle of Ohio; two sisters: Thelma Weidle of Carlisle, Ohio; and Barbara Crawford of Lexington; one grandson and four great grandchildren.
    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, A. J. Winkler and Billy Winkler.
    Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, February 12, 2022 at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home in Irvine, Kentucky. Burial will follow in the Winkler Family Cemetery at Crooked Creek. Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m., Saturday morning, at the funeral home in Irvine.

    Eva Dean Collins, age 74, of Stevens Avenue in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Monday, February 7, 2022, at her home following a long illness.
    She was born August 30, 1948 in Estill County and was the daughter of the late Flemon and Nannie Lunsford Dozier. She was homemaker and her hobbies included fishing, yard sales and going for car rides in the country. She had lived in Estill County all her life.
    Mrs. Collins was preceded in death by her husband, Sherman D. Collins; and is survived by one son, Sherman “Wayne” Collins of Irvine; and three grandchildren.
    She was preceded in death by four sisters, Ruth Sparks, Blanch Sparks, Ruby Sparks, and Lillie Mae Luster; and four brothers, John, Claude, Charlie and Lester Barrett.

    Roger Keith Marcum, age 59, passed away on Thursday, February 3, 2022.
    Born in Estill County, Kentucky, on December 18, 1962, he was the son of the late Onley and Alweena Ratliff Marcum. He was a mechanic.
    Survivors include ex-wife, Desiree Smith; a stepdaughter, Shelly Gilliam; a granddaughter, Makayla Atkins; nine siblings, Edward Earl Marcum, Loretta Lynn Curtis, Helen Perkins, Patricia Guth, Johnny Marcum, Phyllis Jean Rigsby, David Coleman Marcum, Donna Kay Clasen, and Onley Christopher Marcum; and several extended family members and friends.
    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, LaShonda Daniel; and five siblings, Steven Allen Marcum, Lisa Rennae Bittany Marcum, Tonya Gale Marcum, Tina Marie Marcum, and Rachel Marcum.

    Carolyn Sue Gross, age 74, of River Drive in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Monday, February 7, 2022, following a long illness.
    She was born November 1, 1947 in Estill County and was the daughter of the late Clyde and Emma Bailey Dixon. She was a graduate of Irvine High School and dedicated her life to caring for others. She will be missed by family and her many friends she considered family.
    Carolyn Sue is survived by one sister, Billie Jean Cawood of Madison County; one brother, Howard Donnie Dixon of Estill County; a niece, Stephanna Cawood (Pete Figgis); a nephew, J. C. Cawood (Debbie); a great-niece, Ashley Cawood; a great-nephew, Jed Cawood; and seven great, great nieces and nephews.
    She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Russell Gross; and her brother, Larry Dixon.

    Anthony Wayne Newton, age 72, of North Court Street in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Monday, February 7, 2022, at the Baptist Health in Richmond, following a short illness.
    He was born October 9, 1949 in Hamilton, Ohio and was the son of the late Tracy Newton and Jessie Stamper Gilbert. He was a mechanic and had lived in Estill County most of his life.
    Mr. Newton is survived by his wife, Sandra Horn Newton; four daughters: Ladonna Harrison (Doug), Estill County; Crystal Newton, Georgia Newton, both of Madison County; and Sarah Newton of Laurel County; two sons: Anthony Wayne Newton, Jr. and Matthew Newton, both of Laurel County; one sister, Melanie Miller of Estill County; and one brother, William Gilbert of Estill County; 11 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
    Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, February 9, 2022, 1:00 p.m., at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Danny Neal officiating. Burial was at the West Irvine Cemetery. Visitation was held Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. until service time at 1:00 p.m. at the Funeral Home.

    James Russell Townsend, 83, of Beattyville, Kentucky, passed away at Mercy Hospital in Irvine, on Saturday, February 5, 2022.
    Born in Slade, Kentucky, on March 6, 1938 to the late Mark Townsend and the late Ollie Dickerson Townsend, he was a former oil field employee.
    James is survived by his wife, Geneva Rogers Townsend of Beattyville; two daughters, Dena Dailey (Aaron) and Donna Sparks (the late Jim), both of Beattyville; brothers Ronald Townsend, Alton Townsend (Pearl), both of Stanton; and Alvin Townsend (Libby) of Leeco; sisters, Geraldine South of Franklin, Ohio; Callie Faught (Paul) and Juanita Charles (Marvin), both of Stanton; a grandson, James Dailey (Sara) and granddaughter, Alexandria "Lexie" Dailey, both of Beattyville.
    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Johnny Ray Townsend, Eugene Townsend, and Rodney Townsend; and sisters, Ruth Townsend, Joyce Caudill and Lilly Townsend.

Thelma Mae Wise Dunaway

    Thelma Mae Wise Dunaway, age 93, of Richmond, Kentucky, passed away Sunday, February 6, 2022 at Telford Nursing Home in Richmond, surrounded by her daughters.
    A native of Estill County, she was born in Ballard Hollar on April 15, 1928 to the late Elva Walker and Mary Frances Clark Wise.
    She and her husband, Ray C. Dunaway, moved to Ohio and began construction and real estate businesses in Miamisburg, Ohio. She retired as secretary and co-owner of those businesses. They also enjoyed an interest in Tennessee Walking Horses. Thelma was a charter member of Mt. Carmel Christian Church in Ravenna, Kentucky, and a member of Miamisburg Christian Church, Miamisburg, Ohio, where she was a Sunday School/VBS teacher, as well as serving as church treasurer until moving to Richmond, Kentucky. At the time, she became a very active member of Big Hill Christian Church in Richmond, continuing her Sunday school teaching/VBS responsibilities.
    In addition to enjoying her family and church activities, Thelma was a volunteer and former board member of Pattie A. Clay Hospital, now known as Baptist Health – Richmond.
    She is survived by three daughters, Phyllis Dunaway of Irvine, Sue Keeton (Jim) of Richmond, and Althea Garrett (Eddie) of Miamisburg, Ohio; and five grandchildren, Monica Marrs (Jay), Charlene Klein (Larry), and James Ray Keeton (Ellen), all of Richmond; Shane Garrett (Tara) and Sarah Hofmeister, all of Miamisburg, Ohio. In addition, she had ten great grandchildren.
    Thelma is also survived by two sisters, Lynda Parks (Montie) and Mary Alva Fox (Harry Dale), both of Ravenna; a sister-in-law, Margaret Wise of Ohio; as well as countless nieces, nephews, and friends.
    In addition to her parents, Thelma is preceded in death by her husband of nearly 45 years, Ray C. Dunaway (1993); three brothers, Wilbert, Alonzo, and James Wise; and five sisters: Opal Crichfield, Crystal Ashcraft, Aleen Wise, Elfreda Wickizer, and Wavlene Dunaway.
    Funeral services were held at Warren F. Toler Funeral Home in Irvine, with Rev. Mark Pearson officiating. Visitation was held Thursday, February 10, 2022, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. with service immediately following. Burial followed at the Hood Tipton Cemetery.
    In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Big Hill Christian Church in Richmond, Kentucky or to the Telford Terrace in Richmond, Kentucky.

    Nora Louise Powell Lancaster Henry, age 90, of White Oak Road in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Sunday, February 6, 2022, at her home following a long illness.
    She was born December 24, 1931, in Estill County and was the daughter of the late Taylor and Callie Baber Powell. She was the retired owner of Henry Supply and was a member of the White Oak 1st Church of God. She had lived in Estill County most of her life.
    Mrs. Henry was preceded in death by her husbands, Jesse Lancaster and Richard Henry, and is survived by: one daughter, Frieda Lancaster of Estill County; one son, Jesse Lancaster (Sherrie) of Estill County; two grandchildren: Abid Lancaster and Jesse Lancaster Jr. (Autumn); one great grandchild, Jesse Bennett Lancaster; and several nieces and nephews.
    In addition to her husbands and parents, she is preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth Powell and Barbara Sue Hawkins; and three brothers, Breck Powell, John William “Bill” Powell and Eugene Taylor “Jip” Powell.

    Virginia Foster Campbell, age 58, passed away Thursday, February 2, 2022 at Clark Regional Medical Center in Winchester, Kentucky.
    She was born December 2, 1963 in Estill County, to the late Ernest Hibert Foster and the late Ruby Abney Foster. Virginia was a cook and front desk clerk at Natural Bridge State Park Lodge. She was a very caring person who was loved by everyone who knew her. Virginia had a smile that was contagious, she also loved to cook for anyone that would let her.
    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lester Campbell.
    Virginia is survived by her twin sister, Vicki Aines of Stanton; and two brothers, Douglas Foster (Elizabeth) and Ernest Foster (Betty Jo), both of Stanton; two nephews, Nathan Foster (Sarah) and Jeremy Foster; two nieces, Melissa Butcher and Andrea Foster; great nieces and nephews, Emma Foster, Chloe Butcher, Braden Butcher and William Foster; along with several aunts, uncles and cousins and many friends she thought of as family.

    Susan Renee Barnes Bowling, age 43, of Beattyville Road in Ravenna, Kentucky, passed away Monday, January 31, 2022, at the University of Kentucky Hospital in Lexington, following a short illness.
    She was born February 7, 1978, in Fayette County and was the daughter of the late Dudley and Brenda Morris Barnes. She was a CMA and was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church. She had lived in Estill County all her life.
    Mrs. Bowling is survived by her husband, Wade William Bowling; one son, Ethan Hunter Bowling (Tamara Miller) of Ravenna; two sisters: Rebecca Lynn Baker of Estill County; and Rhonda Kay Barnes (Shawn) of Georgia; two brothers: William Ray Barnes and Ronald Wayne Barnes, both of Estill County; three grandchildren: Jase Anthony Tipton, Brendan Wade Tipton and Brayden Kade Tipton; five nieces: Kendra Renee Tipton (Robbie), Kaylee Beth Adams, Kristina Katlyn Baker, Christian Lee Tipton and Elizabeth Michelle Tipton; two nephews: Joey Baker and Joshua Baker; and two bonus sisters: Lavelle Tipton and Melinda McCool.

Dora Francis Roberts Winkle

    Dora Francis Roberts Winkle, 32 days from being 97 years old, went to be with her Savior on Monday, January 31, 2022. She was at her home which she shared with her husband Leighton for 72 years before he passed away in 2013.
    She was born on March 4, 1925 in Estill County, being the daughter of Fannie Mays Roberts and Minor Clinton Roberts. Dora retired from Carhartt Manufacturing as a supervisor after 43 years and then became co-owner of Rugged Wear with her daughter in Richmond, Kentucky for 20 years when she became primary caregiver for Leighton.
    Mrs. Winkle was a devout Christian and attended South Irvine Christian Church where she became a member in 1939 at age fourteen, serving her master for 83 years. Dora also taught Sunday School and Bible School for many years. She was an avid U. K. basketball fan and watched her Wildcats for the last time last week at the Rehabilitation Center at Irvine Health and Rehabilitation.
    She was preceded in death by her husband, Leighton; one son, James Clinton; her parents, Clint and Fannie Roberts; five sisters, Ida Mae Freeman, Lois Nugent, Hazel Tomes, Ruby Smyth and twin sister Cora Wilson; and three brothers: Clayton (Juanita), Lloyd, and Donald Roberts.
    Mrs. Winkle is survived by one daughter, Deborah Dean Winkle; one son, Winfred Leighton Winkle (Diana Richardson); a special sister-in-law, Mary Helen Garrett; three grandsons, Winfred Leighton Winkle II, James Glenn Winkle (Michelle Brady), and C. J. Cain (Alex Huber); and two special great granddaughters; Abby Lynn Martin (Jordan), and Emma Kate Winkle.
    She is survived by two brothers Paul Lee “Red” Roberts (Charlotte Fowler) and Wayne Douglas Roberts (Susie Showers); two sisters-in-law, Betty Hall Roberts and Nancy Patrick Roberts; and several, nieces and nephews and many friends.
    Public visitation will be held Sunday, February 6, 2022, at 1:30-3:00 p.m. at the South Irvine Christian Church in South Irvine.     James Leslie Rose, age 78, of Panola, Kentucky, the husband of Connie Wilson Rose, passed away Thursday evening, January 27, 2022.
    He was born on November 10, 1943, in Estill County, Kentucky, the son of the late Lloyd and Mary Lula Richardson Rose. Leslie was a veteran, serving his country in The United States Navy. He was a farmer and landowner and was a retired heavy equipment operator at the Blue Grass Army Depot.
    Leslie enjoyed being with people and sharing stories. He especially enjoyed visiting with all his friends at the Blue Grass Stockyards and Winklers’ Stockyard restaurant. In addition he was a member of the Madison County Beef Cattle association.
    Survivors in addition to his wife Connie, include two daughters: Starla Rose Yount (Lee) and Leslie Jean Rose Hubler; a stepson, Michael Carpenter (Brittany); two grandchildren: Kendall Yount and Lloyd Grantham Hubler; two sisters: Ruby Yoon and Freida LaRue; two brothers: Thomas Russell Rose (Joan) and Roy Douglas Rose; his mother-in-law, Barbara Wilson; as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandchild, Alexandra Yount; his son-in-law, Raymond Charles Hubler III; three sisters: Betty Lou Rose, Edna Grace Rose and Jane Alice Gilmore; and two brothers: Freddy Lee Rose and Ralph E. Rose.
    Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 5, 2022, at the Combs, Parsons & Collins Funeral Home, 328 West Main Street, Richmond, with Bro. Dennis Pasley officiating. Burial will follow in the Red Hill Cemetery at Panola. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., Friday, February 4th at the funeral home.
    Serving as Pallbearers are Patrick Tudor, Charlie Clark, Lloyd G. Hubler, Lee Yount, Michael Carpenter, Rodney Rose and Greg Rose.

    Billy Ray Strange, age 64, passed away on Monday, January 31, 2022 at his residence in Clay City, Kentucky.
    Born July 28, 1957 in Montgomery County, Kentucky he was the son of the late Irvin Strange and the late Myrtle Snowden Strange. He enjoyed music, singing and being with friends.
    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Charles Allen Strange, Roy Strange and David Marion Strange; and four sisters, Helen Townsend, Ethel Tipton, Bethel Dennis and Mary Puckett.
    Billy Ray is survived by three brothers, James Strange of Lexington, Eugene Strange of Irvine, and Jerry Strange of Clay City; two sisters, Minnie Pearl Jordan of Clay City, and Nancy Puckett of Irvine; and his friend and caregiver, Dwight Riffe.
    Services were held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 2, 2022 at Hearne Funeral Home in Stanton, officiated by Robert Carroll. Visitation began at 12:00 Noon, Wednesday, at the funeral home.
    Burial was in Kennon Cemetery with Jerry Strange, James A. Strange, Eugene Strange, Dwight Riffe, James J. Strange, Jason Jordan, James Holder and David A. Strange serving as active pallbearers.
    Honorary pallbearers were Lon Goodwin, Angie Goodwin, James Ethan Strange, Tony Jordan, Jeff Jordan and Nicholas Conner.

    Darlene Walters Freeman, age 91, formerly of Estill County, Kentucky, passed away Saturday, January 29, 2022.
    Born April 18, 1930 in Estill County, she was the daughter of the late Virgil and Della Ellington Walters. She resided in Winchester, until recently moving to Georgetown, to be near family to help care for her.
    Besides her parents, she is preceded by her loving husband, Paul; and beloved son and only child, Joe.
    Mrs. Freeman is survived by her daughter-in-law, Cheri Lewis Freeman; two granddaughters, Paige Gilkerson (Greg) and Brittany McDaniel (Dave), all of Georgetown; five great grandchildren: Allie Stone (Tyler), Bailey Gilkerson, both of Georgetown; Hope Burus, Hunter Burus, both of Winchester; and Holly Burus, Frankfort; one great, great granddaughter, “Dani” Claire Stone, Georgetown; a sister, Boots Buford (Ray) of Fort Walton Beach, Florida; several nieces and nephews and their children; and a host of friends who loved her dearly.
    She was a member of Corinth Christian Church.
    Funeral services were conducted Sunday, February 6, 2022, 1:00 p.m., at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Dennis Pasley officiating. Burial was at the Rose-Freeman Cemetery. Visitation was held Sunday from 11:00 a.m. until service time at 1:00 p.m. at the Funeral Home.
    Pallbearers were Greg Gilkerson, Dave McDaniel, Tyler Stone, Michael Charles, Otis Freeman, Darren Tuttle, Mark Horn, Donnie Barnes and Jason Freeman.

William “Bill” Royce Flanery


    William “Bill” Royce Flanery, age 63, of Berea, Kentucky, passed away, Saturday, January 29, 2022, at UK Medical Center in Lexington, after a brief illness.
    Bill was born in Estill County to the late Robert and Edith Arvin Flanery. He was a meticulous carpenter, who took pride in his work. He was also a veteran of the United States Army Reserves. In his free time, he enjoyed playing golf and hanging out with his buddies at Berea Country Club.
    In addition to his parents, he also preceded in death by his Pop, James Lonnie Thomas; one sister, Paulette Neal King; and his best friend, Ernie Hunt.
    He is survived by his daughter, Jessica Duerson (Jeremiah); his partner or as he said, “his better half,” Becky Duerson; his mom, Phyllis Thomas; his siblings, James Flanery (Zayda), Christine Rose (Dean), Ailene Frymyer (Larry), and Jamie Day (Doug); two grandchildren, Sutton and Adler Duerson; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
    Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Thursday, February 3, 2022, at Lakes Funeral Home, 203 North Dogwood Drive, Berea, with Jerry Abrams officiating. Burial will follow in the Berea Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 11:00 a.m. until service time at 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
