Elva Gene Howell, 79
|
Elva Gene Howell, devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend and Christian, age 79, of Clay City, Kentucky, went home to be with Jesus on Sunday, March 5, 2023.
He was born on January 15, 1944, in Stanton, to the late Hursel Howell and the late Laura Evelyn Reed Howell.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister, Elma Sue Campbell.
Gene loved spending as much time with his family and friends as possible. He loved his family fiercely and provided a lifetime of wonderful memories. He loved cooking a big breakfast for his family and taking his famous mashed potatoes and coleslaw to potlucks. He was a member of the West Bend First Church of God for 22 years, where part of that time he served as a Board Member. Before retiring, Gene worked as a Supervisor at Leggett & Platt in Winchester for 40 years. He enjoyed his favorite hobbies of hunting, fishing, horseshoes, cornhole and billiards.
Mr. Howell is survived by his wife of 59 years, Elnora Bellamy Howell; one son, Stephen Howell (Faye); three daughters: Lisa Spangler (Michael), Jeanie Napier (Ty) and LeAnna Lunsford (Jim); 19 grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and many friends and relatives.
Funeral services officiated by Bro. James Harold Combs and Ray Watson will be conducted on Thursday, March 9, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. at Hearne Funeral Home, 125 West College Avenue in Stanton. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 8, 2023, at the funeral home as well.
Burial will be at Cat Creek Cemetery in Stanton with Ryan Spangler, Jon-Michael McCormick, Nathan Howell, Leighton Jones, Justin Napier, Matthew Howell, Tory Peyton, Ethan Lunsford, Jackson Everman, Zach Lunsford, Justin Olinger and Jeremy Olinger serving as active pallbearers.
Honorary pallbearers are Rachael Fraley, Kari Lyons, Lori McMillin, Tiffany Angel, Tasha Santiago, Amber Olinger, Lilly Olinger and the members of West Bend First Church of God.

Patricia Joy Bowles, age 75, of Winchester Road in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Saturday, March 4, 2023, following a long illness.
She was born August 27, 1947, in Estill County, and was the daughter of the late Eugene Horn and Addie Mae Brandenburg Horn. She was a homemaker and attended the Friendship Baptist Church. She had lived in Estill County all her life.
Patricia was preceded in death by her former husband, Elmer Bowles, and she is survived by two daughters: Tammy Doty Noe (Carol Lee Lauderdale) of Estill County; and Misty Michelle Bowles (Bruce Kelley) of Madison County; two brothers: Roy Horn of Fayette County; and Alonzo Horn of Colorado; three grandchildren: Brittany Doty Miller (Chris), Boone Raydan McIntosh, and Addie Madison Winkler; and a special friend, Billy Dennis.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, March 9, 2022, 11:00 a.m., at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be at the West Irvine Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Funeral Home.

Farris “Cotton” Marcum, 80

Farris “Cotton” Marcum, age 80, a resident of the Irvine Nursing and Rehab Center, passed away Saturday, March 4, 2023, at the Center following a long illness.
He was born January 6, 1943, in Estill County, Kentucky, and was the son of Elmer and Rosetta Isaacs Marcum. He was a carpenter and a member of the Drip Rock Baptist Church. He had lived in Estill County all his life.
Mr. Marcum is survived by two daughters: Annette Moore and Rhonda Marcum Ray, both of Estill County; four sons: Farris Glenn Marcum, Farrell Lynn Marcum, both of Estill County; Tony Marcum of Indiana; and Farris Marcum of Lincoln County; six sisters: Ina Faye Murphy of Estill County; Geraldine Fowler of Lee County; Opal Hogieback, Annalee Farthing, both of Ohio; Arlene Clark and Sheila Cox, both of Estill County; 17 grandchildren, several great grandchildren, and several great, great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Christina Marcum; one sister, Wanda Barker; and five brothers, William Louis Marcum, Luther Marcum, Eugene Marcum, Kenneth Marcum, and Elmer Marcum Jr.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, March 11, 2023, 11:00 a.m., at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Randy Marcum officiating. Burial will be at the Marcum Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Funeral Home.

Eva Alexander Rose, 85

Eva Alexander Rose, age 85, a resident of the Fountain Circle Care and Rehab Center in Lexington, Kentucky, passed away Saturday, March 4, 2023, at the Center following a long illness.
She was born August 22, 1937, and was the daughter of Lucian Alexander and Nannie Hall Noland. She had retired from the Roses Department Store and attended the Providence Baptist Church. She had lived in Estill County for most of her life.
Mrs. Rose was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin Rose, and she is survived by her daughter, Virginia Hunt (Richard), of Estill County.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by one sister, Alice Craycraft; and three brothers, Bill, Dave, and Wayne Freeman
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, March 7, 2023, 12:00 Noon, at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Ronald Lutes officiating. Burial will be at the Amos Richardson Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 Noon at the Funeral Home.

Michael Allen Lykins, age 48, of Saylersville, Kentucky, passed away at his residence on Thursday, March 2, 2023.
He was born October 22, 1974 in Ashland, Kentucky, to Allen and Diane Lykins. He was a HVAC Technician.
Mr. Lykins is survived by his mother, Diane Lykins Westcott (Barry), a son, Allen Ray Lykins; a daughter, Charla Lykins; Melinda Lykins, mother of the children; a sister, Aimee Grayson (Tim); and Mollie King that he thought of like a sister and her husband Johnnie.
He was preceded in death by his father, Allen Lykins.
Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m., Sunday, March 5, 2023 at the Magoffin County Funeral Home in Salyersville. Friends visited Saturday, March 4, 2023 from 6-8 p.m. Burial was in the Lykins - Penix Cemetery on Mash Fork Rd in Saylersville.
Grayson Funeral Home in Clay City was in charge of services.
Roger Dale Warner, 70

Roger Dale Warner, age 70, of Irvine, Kentucky, departed this life on Tuesday, February 28, 2023, at the Greg and Noreen Hospice Center in Hazard, Kentucky.
He was born on January 15, 1953, in Richmond, Kentucky, to the late Oliver Lewis and Fairy Rose Warner. He often attended the Old Time Gospel Church, Ivory Hill Baptist Church, and Bethel Christian Church.
In addition to his parents, Roger was preceded in death by two brothers, Roy Shumate and Randall Shumate; and one sister, Alice Faye Houston.
Mr. Warner is survived by his three children, Jeff Warner, Michelle Osborne (Timothy), and Monica Glasson; along with seven grandchildren, Trinity, Owen Dale, Jeffrey, Noah, and Nicholas Osborne; and Tracy and Joshua Glasson; and numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends to miss him and mourn his passing.
Funeral services for Roger Dale Warner were conducted on Saturday, March 4, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel of Lewis Home for Funerals with Brother David Watson officiating. Interment followed in the Rose-Freeman Cemetery at Fox in Irvine, Kentucky. The family received friends on Friday, March 3rd from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Funeral Home.
Serving as pallbearers were, Glen Rose, Travis Rose, Randy Shumate, Ricky Brinegar, Jerry Brinegar, Timothy Osborne, Trinity Osborne, and Owen Jake Osborne; as well as numerous honorary pallbearers.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to his memorial fund.

Samuel Marion Fugate, age 64, passed away Thursday, February 23, 2023 in Lexington, Kentucky.
He was born December 23, 1958 in Winchester to Lorena Ruth McClure Fugate and the late Jerry Fugate.
Survivors include his mother, Lorena Fugate; two sons, Samuel Martin Fugate and James Marion Dillon Fugate; a daughter, Stacy Lynn Reed; a brother, Bubby Fugate (Billie Ann); a sister, Bonnie Catherine Feather; seven grandchildren, Kane Martin Fugate, Liza J Fugate, Ryan Andrew Wireman, Elijah Christopher Fugate, Tanner Lee Reed, Lakin Booth and Koda Booth; and one great grandchild, Renessme Wireman.
Services were held Sunday, February 26, 2023, 2:00 p.m. at Wells Funeral Home of Stanton by Bro. Sammy Faulkner. Visitation was Sunday from 10am-2pm at the funeral home.
Burial was in Clay City Eaton Cemetery with Sammy Fugate, Dillon Fugate, Zach Fugate, Jeremy Fugate, John Feather, and Ryan Wireman serving as pallbearers.

Teddie Mae Arthur, age 87, of Locomotive Street in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Friday, February 24, 2023, at her home.
She was born July 25, 1935, in Estill County and was the daughter of Edward and Della Matthews Gray. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Christian Church in Irvine. She had lived in Estill County all her life.
Mrs. Arthur is survived by her husband, Fred Arthur; three daughters: Teresa Worrell (Danny Fox), Shelia LaJean Hall, and Melissa Woosley (Dawayne); two sons, Billy Dean Arthur (Sharon) and Ricky Arthur (Connie); four sisters: Patricia Maddox, Darlene Sparks, Betty Lou Shepherd, and Dorothy Case; ten grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild; and a special friend, Phyllis Rucker.
She was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Virginia Stell, Jeannie Witt, Myrtie Tipton, and Christina Miller; and two brothers, Marion Gray and Edward Gray, Jr.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, February 28, 2023, 1:00 p.m., at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Greg Humpert officiating. Burial was at the Crowe Cemetery. Visitation was held on Tuesday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Billy Eugene Cooper, 89, of Estill County passed away peacefully at his home, Friday, February 24, 2023.
He was born November 9, 1933, to the late Oscar and Effie Clem Cooper. He was a farmer and a retired employee of Bundy Tubing.
Mr. Cooper was an active member of Salem Baptist Church, where he and his wife, Christine, broke the long-standing tradition of men and women sitting on opposite sides of the church.
He was a member of the Estill County Historical Society and the Oil Field Engine Society. He enjoyed his time with the Hillbilly Flywheelers, traveling to shows with “Woody & Granny” and making friends wherever he went.
Mr. Cooper enjoyed gardening, farming, building houses, wood working, genealogy, and hunting Indian artifacts; but most of all, he enjoyed time spent with his family.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Christine Stone Cooper.
Mr. Cooper is survived by three children: Marvin Cooper (Linda), Pauline Muncie (Larry), and
Raymond Cooper (Shurla); seven grandchildren: Cynthia Townsend (Jerry), Matthew Cooper (Kristina), Alissa Taylor (Chan), Nathan Cooper (Garrianna), Jaime Wallace (Chris), Kristie Turner (Matt), and Lindsey Rogers (Josh); 14 great grandchildren: Cale Wilson, Carson Wilson, Drake Cooper, Caleb Taylor, Blake Wallace, Chase Wallace, Norah Cooper, Reid Turner, Kinley Taylor, Maci Turner, Myla Wallace, Abram Cooper, Cooper Rogers, and Laurey Rogers; siblings: Ray Cooper, Wilma Jo Parsons, Nancy Rhodes, and Virginia Withers; and a sister-in-law, Doris Cooper.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, William “Wig” Cooper, Henry Melvin “Hoss” Cooper, Owen Cooper, and Arthur Lee Cooper; and three sisters, Katie Hill, Minnie Sanders, and Clara Henry.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, February 27, 2023, 12:00 Noon, at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Jerry Smith officiating. Burial was at the Sally Poer Cemetery. Visitation was held on Sunday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Funeral Home.

Ferrell Lewis Dunaway, 85

Ferrell Lewis Dunaway age 85, of Liberty, Indiana, passed peacefully at his farm surrounded by loved ones on Wednesday, February 22, 2023. The youngest of 11 children, he was born March 24, 1937 in Irvine, Kentucky to Plez Daniel Dunaway and Maryliza Reed Dunaway.
On February 9, 1959, Ferrell married the love of his life Hazel Robinson Dunaway. They were married for 44 years prior to her passing in September 2003. Mr. and Mrs. Dunaway were blessed with 10 children, 27 grandchildren, and 56 great grandchildren, and 15 great-great grandchildren
Ferrell was a stock racecar driver for several years; he drove it all from dirt tracks to black top he loved the adrenaline rush of racing. He lived a long blessed life of farming, driving a semi, shooting pool, and watching his grandchildren grow. He would often say, “I don’t know why the good Lord has let me live this long, but he must have big plans for me!”
He is survived by his children, Tom Dunaway (Joanna) of Connersville, Dick Dunaway (Patti) of Liberty, Sherry Dunaway of Liberty, Debby Dunaway of Georgetown, Kentucky, Betty Franklin (Harry) of Liberty, Vicky Pollitt (Randy) of Liberty, Mary Dunaway Marcroft of Liberty, and Jennifer Grant (Kenneth) of Brownsville.
Mr. Dunaway is preceded in death by his parents and loving wife Hazel; his two sons, Mike and Wayne Dunaway; and grandchildren, Damon Bowling, Joseph Michael Dunaway, Ricky James Rowe, and Shawda Smith.

Dixie Pearl Elam, age 85, of Campton Road, Stanton, Kentucky, passed away on Wednesday, February 22, 2023, at her home.
Born in Tar Ridge, Kentucky on December 11, 1937, she was the daughter of the late Vernie Peck and the late Gladys Gose Peck.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Harlan Elam; two brothers, Robert Peck and Edward Peck; and one sister, Marilyn Harris.
Dixie loved her family unconditionally and saw the good in everyone, family was her everything. She loved to attend church and worship the Lord. She enjoyed playing the card game “Rook” and having fun with her little sidekick Yorkie Dog “Harley”.
Dixie is survived by two sons: Anthony Elam (Rebecca) of Stanton and Darren Keith Elam (Marilyn) of Irvine; two daughters: Denise Ferrell (Danny) of Frenchburg and Amy Adkins (Huston) of Stanton; nine grandchildren: April Porter, Robbie Ferrell, Alishia Hon, Amanda Barker, Anthia Elam, Harlan Elam, Maria Elam, Allie Adkins and Abby Adkins; and ten great grandchildren: Alex Wexler, Whitney Young, Emily Ferrell, Gracie Barker, Morgan Porter, Cole Ferrell, Mallory Porter, John Barker, Jr., Maggie Barker and Elaina Johnson.
Funeral services officiated by Rev. Dennis Flannery were conducted on Friday, February 24, 2023, at 3:00 p.m. at Hearne Funeral Home, 125 West College Avenue in Stanton. Visitation was held on Friday as well from 1:00 p.m. until service time at 3:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial was be held at Resthaven Cemetery in Stanton with Robbie Ferrell, Von Peck, Morgan Porter, Craig Pinkerton, Lucas Faulkner, John Porter and Cole Ferrell serving as active pallbearers.
Honorary pallbearers were the staff of Hospice East, Seth Schooler, Harlan Elam, John Barker, Jr. and Brenda Ross.

Margaret Ellen Floyd Fox, age 90, of Irvine, Kentucky, departed this life on Wednesday, February 22, 2023, at the Compassionate Care Hospice Center in Richmond, Kentucky.
Margaret was born on February 20, 1933, in Irvine, Kentucky, to the late Hugh and Alethea Hunt Floyd. She was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to her parents, Margaret was preceded in death by her loving husband, Ledford Frank Fox; six brothers, Wilburn, James Thomas, and Herman Floyd, as well as three infant brothers; two sisters, Luola Lee and Marilyn Loretta Fox; one sister-in-law, Hazel Jean Floyd; and three brothers-in-law, Robert Egelston, Herbert Fox, and Bluford Lee.
Survivors include her sister, Vida Joyce Egelston; two sisters-inlaw, Eddie Floyd and Bertie Floyd; numerous nieces and nephews including two special nieces, Demetria Rogers (Michael) and Tamara Fox; along with many other relatives and friends to miss her and mourn her passing.
Funeral services for Margaret Ellen Floyd Fox were conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 25, 2023, in the chapel of Lewis Home for Funerals with Brother Tim Floyd officiating. Interment followed in the Johnny Richardson Cemetery. The family received friends from 11:00 a.m. until the time of services at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Alma E. Jenkins, age 88, a resident of the Madison Health & Rehabilitation Center, Richmond, Kentucky, passed away Wednesday, February 22, 2023, at the Center, following a long illness.
She was born September 1, 1934, in Estill County and was the daughter of Johnny and Hannah Sparks Marcum. She was a homemaker and a member of the Drip Rock Baptist Church. She had lived in Estill County most of her life.
She is survived by four daughters: Sue Dethlefsen (Mitchell), Ann Fields, both of Irvine; Sharon Caldwell (John) of Dayton, Ohio; and Teresa Sparks (Dwight) of Winchester; a daughter-in-law, Tamara Spurlock of Irvine; two sisters: Elizabeth Turner (Lannie) of Dayton, Ohio; and Gearl Hembree (Kenneth) of Berea; two brothers: Orville Marcum (Jeanette) of Louisville; and Marvin Marcum (Frances) of Irvine;
15 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren and nine great, great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Raymond Jenkins, Blondell Goosey, Ira Lainhart, and Ezart Fox; one daughter, Janice Murphy; two sons, Dale Goosey and Frank Goosey; and 12 brothers and sisters.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday, February 26, 2023, 2:00 p.m., at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Poodle Marcum officiating. Burial was at the Marcum Cemetery. Visitation was held on Sunday from 12:00 Noon to 2:00 p.m. at the Funeral Home.

James G. Cox, age 81, of Richmond Road in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Tuesday, February 21, 2023, at the St. Joe Hospital in London, Kentucky, following a short illness.
He was born February 7, 1942 in Estill County and was the son of Truman C. and Ada Evans Cox. He was a retired machine operator for Phillips Lighting. He attended the Flatwoods Christian Church where he served as a Deacon and Sunday School Teacher. He had lived in Estill County all his life.
Mr. Cox is survived by his wife, Doris Rice Cox; one daughter, Kelley Ann Holloway (Brandon) of Estill County;
one son, James Lynn Cox (Kimberly) of Estill County; one sister, Dewana Dozier of Madison County; and three grandchildren: Gavin David Holloway, Garrett James Holloway, and Gunner Kane Holloway.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Earl Douglas Cox.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, February 25, 2023, 11:00 a.m., at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Charlie Brown officiating. Burial will be at the Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Funeral Home.

Lloyd Edward “Eddie” Crouch, 70

Lloyd Edward “Eddie” Crouch, age 70, of Irvine, Kentucky, departed this life on Monday, February 20, 2023, at the Compassionate Care Hospice Center in Richmond, surrounded by his loving family.
Mr. Crouch was born on July 28, 1952, in Richmond, Kentucky, to the late James Edward and Mary Ellen Abney Crouch. Lloyd worked for many years with the Estill County Emergency Services. He was a former assistant chief of the Irvine Fire Department as well as serving as captain of the Estill County Fire Department. Lloyd was an active member of the American Legion Post 79 in Irvine. He was a former Commander of the Sons of American Legion Post 79, Lloyd was an active member of the American Legion Riders, and served for many years as the bugler for the Legion honor guard.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Crouch was preceded in death by two uncles, Charles and Bugsy Crouch.
Eddie is survived by his four children, Nicholas Crouch, Jason Crouch (Tara), Amber Crouch, and Eric Crouch and fiancée Mollie; three grandchildren, Paige Crouch, Tristin Teany, and Bentley Teany; as well as numerous other relatives and friends to miss him and mourn his passing.
Funeral services for Lloyd Edward Crouch were conducted on Friday, February 24, 2023, at 8:00 p.m. in the chapel of Lewis Home for Funerals with Brother Eric Patrick officiating. The family has chosen cremation after the services. The family received friends from 6 until 8:00 p.m. prior to the services on Friday at the funeral home.
Martha Houchin Witt, 98

Martha Houchin Witt died peacefully on February 12, 2023 in her residence at The Village of Gleannloch Farms in Spring, Texas.
She was born in Salvisa, Kentucky on September 29, 1924, the daughter of Martha Gill and Lloyd Scott Houchin. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 57 years, William Boyd Witt; and her brother, Dr. Edward Gill Houchin of LaGrange.
Martha was a graduate of Centre College. She married William Boyd in 1946 and moved to Irvine, where they owned and operated Witt Furniture Company for 55 years until his death in 2003. She was a member of the Irvine First Christian Church and, after moving to Richmond in 2005, was a member of the First Christian Church of Richmond.
A charter member of the Irvine Four Seasons Garden Club, she served as President & Secretary, additionally participating in many club and community activities. She enjoyed being an active member of the Estill County Golf Club, Madison County Country Club and the Arlington Club. She was also a member of the Richmond Area Arts Council.
She loved to travel, especially with her family and friends, taking trips to see many parts of the United States and even traveling to Alaska, Italy and Australia in her 80’s. She loved a party, and all family activities were primary in her life. Her passion for life, fun, family and friends was reflected throughout her years and touched everyone she met.
She is survived by one son, Ashley Witt (Tara) of Irvine; three daughters, Elizabeth Edwards; Ann Todaro (Steve), and Mary Mizwa (Mike), all of Houston, Texas; and one nephew, Scott Houchin of Louisville.
Affectionately known as “Nana” to her much loved eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
