Virginia Dare "Jenny" Hill McDougal, 99

Virginia Dare "Jenny" Hill McDougal

Author Virginia Dare "Jenny" Hill McDougal, age 99, of Bessemer, Alabama, passed away in her sleep in the early morning of Thursday, June 22, 2023. She died of age-related complications soon after entering hospice care at Plantation Manor, McCalla, Alabama.
She was born May 22, 1924, in Ravenna, Kentucky, where she lived until she graduated from Estill County High School in Irvine. Her final year of high school she lived under the tender care of her aunts (her mother's sisters) Anna and Mary. She then rejoined her parents, Effie Rice Hill and Hugh Hill, and older sister, Mary Kathryn, in Alabama. She continued her schooling in Birmingham at the Stenotype Business Institute and subsequently took secretarial work.
It was at work that she met her husband to be, John L. "Mac" McDougal. They married in 1948. They had one son, John Michael, "Mike," McDougal, born July 19, 1950.
The little family moved to Borger, Texas in 1955 where Mr. McDougal had accepted a position with a large carbon black plant where they remained until Mr. Mac's retirement in 1987 and frequent trips back home to Jenny's much-loved Kentucky and Alabama to reunite with their families and friends. In Borger the couple continued their love of dancing with the local dance club and took up golf. As Mike settled into school, Jenny accepted part time secretarial work at the carbon black plant and later at the local high school. Mac worked erratic hours, being always on call for his expertise at the plant, and when Mike left the nest, Jenny began her career as a writer while also continuing her practicing her love of the arts; especially painting and drawing.

by Virginia Hill McDougal

At the instigation of Mac her first book, "Footsteps Through Childhood with Jenny," also illustrated by Jenny, was published in 1981. Meanwhile she had also been publishing essays and poetry, most often in the magazine, "Back Home in Kentucky," reflecting her fond memories of her childhood and young womanhood in her natal State and especially her memories of her hometown, a fondness shared with her "Sissy," Mary Kathryn despite the challenges of the depression era.
After 35 years in Texas, she and Mac retired to Bessemer, Alabama in 1990. Mac, sadly missed husband and dancing partner of 46 years, died in 1994, too soon after the move back to be with friends and family.
"Footsteps Through Childhood" was on display in several bookstores and libraries in Kentucky and thus came to the attention of Dr. Jerry G Rose, professor of Civil Engineering, University of Kentucky. He contacted Jenny, attracted to her account of her father's work with the Louisville and Nashville Railroad and discovered that Jenny had two more books in the hopper. He brought them to the attention of a printer in Kentucky and the books, one that she wrote and illustrated while still in Texas, the children's picture book, "The Mouse that Stayed Up for Christmas," 2009 printing and a chapter book for older children and adults, "Kentucke, a Little Bit of Heaven," 2008 printing.
In May of 2009 Estill County Schools invited Jenny and two other authors from that region of Kentucky to a day of book signing in the school library. The purpose was to showcase native writers to encourage the youth in the small district to dream big. Jenny's son, grandson, and daughter-in-law (Sabra Webber) were able to share the day with her, coincidently, Jenny's birthday. A short year later, she lost her beloved son.
Jenny had a giving heart and contributed to many local and national charities over the years that focused on eradicating poverty or curing various diseases including dementia. In her last two years, she herself wrestled with dementia.
Jenny was preceded in death by her parents, Effie Rice Hill and Hugh Corbett Hill; her beloved aunts, Mary Rice and Anna Garrett, née Rice, both of Irvine; her dear sister, Mary Kathryn Hill Lindsey; her kind and loving spouse, John L. McDougal; and son, John Michael McDougal, gone way too soon.
In all her life she had precious friends in Kentucky, in Texas and in Alabama -- most long gone now though she kept up with them until the end.
She leaves behind her adored grandson, Michael Alexander McDougal-Webber and her daughter-in-law, Sabra Jean Webber. She is also survived by the offspring of her sister, Mary Kathryn Hill Lindsay: Jerri Lindsey Oliver, Jane Lindsey Thomas (Norman), and Paul Lindsey (Bebe), all of Alabama; and numerous great nieces and nephews, as well as great, great, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday, June 29, 2023, at Valhalla Funeral Home, 5317 Bessemer Super Hwy., Midfield, Alabama. Please join us in a celebration of her life. Visitation starts at 11:00 a.m. An indoor service will be held at 12:00 Noon.
