Samuel Ray Embs

    Samuel Ray Embs, age 73, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother passed away Sunday, January 28, 2024, in his home after a long illness. He was the son of the late Samuel Napoleon Embs and Nannie Mae Clem Embs.
    He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Patricia Neal Embs, his son, Samuel Ray Embs II, his daughter, Kristy Embs Smith, his grandchildren, Timothy Lee Smith III, Anna Smith Rowe, and Maycee Lorraine Embs, his brother, Gary Embs and his sisters, Carlene King, Barbara Richardson, Cleta Dial, Loretta Travis, and Linda Hounshell.
    Samuel was born October 2, 1950 in Estill County, Kentucky and lived here his whole life. He was a Vietnam War veteran who proudly served his country, earning a Purple Heart, a bronze star and various other medals for bravery and service.
    He worked as a sawmill operator and was a skilled carpenter who built his family’s home.
    He was a charter member of Harg Baptist Church and was a faithful Christian who loved the LORD.
    Samuel was a truly kind and generous man who will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
    Funeral services were conducted Friday, February 2, 2024, 11 a.m. at the Harg Baptist Church with Bro. Larry Neal officiating. Burial was at the Embs Cemetery. Visitation was held on Thursday, February 1st from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home and after 10 a.m., Friday, at the Harg Baptist Church.
    Pallbearers were Mike Horn, Michael Brandenburg, Wayne Workman, Billly Travis, Jeff Winburn, and Jay Neal
    Honorary pallbearers were Jonah Neal, Landon Campbell, Charles Sparks, Danny Fowler, Danny Newman, and Isaac Couch.

Fred Arthur

    Fred Arthur, age 89, of Locomotive Street in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Thursday, January 25, 2024, at his home following a long illness.
    He was born March 27, 1934, in Estill County and was the son of the late Everett and Myrtle Lee Crowe Arthur. He was a former owner of Arthur’s Body Shop and was a member of the First Christian Church. He had lived in Estill County all his life.
    Mr. Arthur is survived by three daughters, Teresa Worrell (Danny Fox) of Montgomery County, Shelia Arthur Hall of Estill County, and Melissa Woosley (Dawayne) of Madison County; two sons, Billy Dean Arthur (Sharon) and Ricky Arthur (Connie), both of Estill County; four brothers: Linville Arthur, H.M. Arthur, Earl Arthur, all of Estill County; and Wallace Arthur of Fayette County; eight grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Teddie Mae Gray Arthur; one sister, Geneva Arthur; and four brothers, Cornelius Arthur, Gerald Arthur, Frank Arthur and Everett Arthur, Jr.
    Funeral services were conducted Monday, January 29, 2024, 1 p.m., at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Keith Weldon officiating. Burial was at the Crowe Cemetery. Visitation was held on Monday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
    Pallbearers were Logan Arthur, Jacob Floyd, Nicolas Floyd, Todd Griggs, Anthony Rucker, Charles Durbin, and Dwight Puckett.
    Honorary pallbearer was Charlie Campbell.

Mildred Marie Lamb

    Mildred Marie Lamb, age 81, a beacon of love and grace, returned to her heavenly home on Thursday, January 25, 2024.
    Born on October 1, 1942, in Estill County, she was the daughter of Virgil and Hallie Miller Hoover. Marie was a wonderful wife, a caring mother and a precious Mamaw. But most importantly, she was a cherished child of the King.
    Marie was a homemaker and a member of South Irvine Baptist Church, which she loved dearly. She had the sweetest soul and a smile that lit up hearts.
    She will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 59 years, Dawson Lamb; her children, Teresa McKinley, Rodney & Rebecca Lamb, and Rebecca & Matt Lee; her grandchildren: Brooke Feltrop (Andrew) and Cheyenne Lamb; her great grand babies, Reed, Jonah, and Piper Feltrop; her siblings: Herbert Hoover (Mary), Lloyd Hoover (Mary), David Hoover (Alvenia), and Lugladys Collins; and many nieces and nephews.
    In addition to her parents, Marie, was preceded in her death by her brother, Fred Morris Hoover.
    Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, January 30, 2024, 1 p.m. at the South Irvine Baptist Church with Bro. Donnie Burford officiating. Burial was at the South Irvine Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Church. The Warren F. Toler Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
    Gravesite flowers welcome, other contributions can be made to South Irvine Baptist Church.
    A special thank you to her many healthcare workers whom she loved like family.

Byron Keith Welch

    Byron Keith Welch, age 64, husband of Charlotte Rose Welch, passed away Tuesday, January 23, 2024 at Norton Hospital, Louisville.
    He was born November 23, 1959 in Winchester, Kentucky to the late Henry Clay and Carolyn Faye Snowden Welch.
    Survivors include his wife, Charlotte Welch; sons, Byron Keith Welch Jr., (Erin) and J.D. Dunaway (Kelly); grandchildren, Brody Welch, Hunter Dunaway, Kaydee Dunaway, and Jakob Dunaway; father-in-law, William Rose; sister-in-law, Conchita Everman (Danny); and brother-in-law, Tim Rose (Megan).
    He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Jeffrey Welch.
    Services were held Saturday, January 27, 1 p.m., Wells Funeral Home by Bro. Jimmy Cole. Visitation was held Friday, 5-9 p.m., at the funeral home.
    Burial was in Stanton Cemetery with Travis Kinser, Daniel Kinser, Chris Tipton, Greg Spencer, Greg Hollon, Lee D Freeman, Josh Wells, Josh Crabtree, and Danny Everman serving.
    Honorary pallbearers serving were all his grandchildren, Ellis Ray Garrett, Rondle Reed, Darrell Hatton, Darrell Kennon, David Morton, Luke Turner, and Mike Tipton.

Violet Riddell Dawes

    Violet Riddell Dawes, age 79, of Irvine, Kentucky, sadly left us on Saturday, January 20, 2024, due to a long illness. She was loved by many and blessed to be called a wife, mom, Mamaw Violet, sister, aunt, and friend by those that knew her. God and family were the heart of her life and who she was.
    Violet was born July 10, 1944, in Irvine, Kentucky to the late Glenn and Chaney Kirby Riddell. She was of the Pentecostal faith.
    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, William, Owen, Fred and Kimball Riddell; and one sister, Ruth Hall.
    Survivors include her loving husband of over 65 years, Billy Dawes; three children, Janice Noland (Jimmy), Teddy Dawes (Teresa), and Lisa Angel; five grandchildren, Jacqueline Noland, Tyler Noland, Jeff Angel (Laili), John Dawes (Haley), and Jodi Lynn Dawes; five great grandchildren, Kylie Jo Noland, Wyatt Noland, Ayden Angel. Aleena Halleran, and Ashton Leigh Angel; one brother, Larry Riddell (Judy); two sisters, Gerry Clowers and Marcy Grace (Jimmy); and a very special niece, Rhonda Lisle; along with numerous other nieces and nephews, relatives, and friends to miss her and mourn her passing.
    Funeral services for Violet Riddell Dawes will be conducted on Wednesday January 24, 2024, at 1 p.m. in the chapel of Lewis Home for Funerals. Brother Jerry Rose and Brother Chris Winkler will be officiating. Interment will follow in the West Irvine Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until the time of funeral services at 1 p.m. at the funeral home.
    Serving as pallbearers will be Jeff Angel, John Dawes, Tyler Noland, Jimmy Noland, Greg Wright, and Justin Riddell.
    Honorary pallbearers will be Randy Lainhart, Danny Holliman, Paul “Bird” Arvin and Jack Riddell.

Margaret Geneva Denniston

    Margaret Geneva Denniston, age 88, of Lilly Ferry Road in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Saturday, January 20, 2024, at her home following a long illness.
    She was born May 23, 1935, in Estill County, a daughter of the late Grant and Mary McIntosh Puckett. She was a homemaker and had lived in Estill County all her life.
    Mrs. Denniston is survived by her husband, James Paul Denniston; and several nieces and nephews.
    In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by two sisters, Izolla Crowe and Jean Hall; and three brothers, Sherman, Ivan, and Rube Puckett.
    Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, January 24, 2024, 1 p.m., at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Merle Travis with burial to follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.

James Edward “Jim” Johnson

    James Edward “Jim” Johnson, age 87, husband of Bonnie Lois Drake Johnson, passed away on Saturday, January 20, 2024, at his home in Winchester, Kentucky.
    Born March 1, 1936, in Estill County, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Ishmael and Louis Beckley Johnson. Jim was a carpenter for many years and retired from the Imperial Service Station in Lexington, Kentucky, where he worked in management. He was a proud Veteran of the United States Army.
    In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Tony Johnson (Belinda) of Winchester, Jimmy Johnson (Crystal) of Columbus, Ohio; and Bobby Johnson (Teresa) of Grove City, Ohio; four grandchildren, Heather Johnson of Nicholasville, James and Eric Johnson of Columbus, Ohio; and Desiree Smith of Norfolk, Virginia; ten great grandchildren; five brothers, Billy Johnson of Winchester, Bob Johnson of Mooresville, North Carolina; Donnie Johnson of Nicholasville, Elmer Johnson of Heath, Ohio; and Delmer Johnson of Millersburg; four sisters, Joyce Carter of Winchester, Emma Crowe of Mt. Sterling, Brenda Potts (Terry) and Betty Aubrey (George), both of Winchester; several extended family members and friends.
    He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Howard Johnson.
    Visitation will be at 11 a.m., Friday, January 26, 2024, until time of service at 12 Noon at the Leon Pace Memorial Chapel of SCob ee Funeral Home by Bro. Joe Price. William Eugene Crouch

    William Eugene Crouch, age 89, husband of Dorothy Dawson Crouch, Winchester, Kentucky, passed away Friday, January 19, 2024.
    He was born October 16, 1934 in Clark County, Kentucky, to the late Stanley and Aileen Brock Crouch. He was a Christian in faith, a beloved husband and father of two. He served in the United States Navy four years and the U.S. Navy Reserves and retired from Bundy Tubing after 30 years of service. He was an avid fisherman and loved to play pool.
    In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughters, Debbie Abner (Danny) and Letha Crouch; one grandchild, Christy Abner Combs; two great grandchildren, Jonathan and Kaytlen Combs; a sister Alice Brooks (Orville) of Irvine; cousins, John and Pat Pratt; and several nieces and nephews; also special friends, Letha and Scott Earnest of Winchester; known as Papaw Bill by Madyson, Perry Bellamy and Grayson Fletcher, all of Winchester; and his special buddy and loyal pup, Jackson.
    A graveside service will be on Wednesday, January, 24, 2024, at 1 p.m. at the Winchester Cemetery.

Lillie Mae Brooks Tubbs

    Lillie Mae Brooks Tubbs, wife of Claude Thomas Tubbs, of Paris, Kentucky, departed this life peacefully at her home on Thursday morning, January 18, 2024, surrounded by her loving family, at the age of 89.
    Lillie was born in Estill County on December 29, 1934, the daughter of the late Lee Vernon and Della Mae Means Brooks; attended Estill County Schools, and was a seamstress having worked at Hansley Mill and Bluegrass Textile. She was a long-time member of Central Baptist Church where she served in W.M.U. and quilted with the Willing Hands Quilters.
    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Claudia Gardner; a son, Dwayne Tubbs; a sister, Virginia Lee Ormes; and two brothers, Johnny Ward Brooks, and Billy Ray Brooks.
    Along with her husband Claude, she is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Roy Scott; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Anne Tubbs; eight grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; four great, great grandchildren; two brothers, Donald Brooks and Orville Clay Brooks; and a special daughter-in-law, Sharon Davidson.
    Visitation for Lillie Mae Brooks Tubbs was held at Hinton-Turner Funeral Home on Monday, January 22, 2024, beginning at 11 a.m. with funeral following at 1 p.m. with Pastor Josh Ancello officiating. Interment followed in Paris Cemetery with casket bearers being Ronnie Joe Scott, Joe Fister, Ray Aubrey, Trevor Dixon, Dylan Scott, Steve Watts, Jason Lemaster, and Jimmy Lemaster.

Bertha Mae Estepp Bowman

    Bertha Mae Estepp Bowman, age 98, of Sikeston, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, January 17, 2024 at Providence Hospice at the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.
    She was born May 1, 1925 in Owsley County, Kentucky, to Hayes Estepp and Louetta Couch Estepp. On July 19, 1946, she married the late Conley Bowman, also of Owsley County.
    Bertha was a member of the Lilbourn First Baptist Church. She enjoyed quilting, gardening flowers, volunteering at the Senior Oaks Center, and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
    She is survived by three sons, George Bowman (Linda) of Atlanta, Georgia; Donald Bowman (Maryellen) of Ballwin, Missouri; and Dave Bowman of Sikeston, Missouri; two daughters, Louise St. John of Jackson, Missouri; and Joyce Nysewander (Phil) of Plainfield, Indiana; ten grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; and six great, great, grandchildren.
    In addition to her husband and parents, Bertha was preceded in death by two brothers, Carl Estepp and Hayes Estepp, Jr.; five sisters, Mary Bennett, Hazel Shouse, Beulah Estepp, Ima Jean Burton, and Catherine Estepp; and one grandson, Jason St. John.
    Visitation will be held Saturday, February 10, 2024, from 10 a.m. until time of funeral services at 12 Noon at Ponder Funeral Home, 1120 North Main Street in Sikeston, Missouri.
    Interment services will be at Shepherds Hill Cemetery in Booneville, Kentucky.

    Gene Abney, age 73, of Patsy Road in Stanton, passed away Tuesday, January 16, 2024, at the University of Kentucky Hospital in Lexington, following a short illness.
    He was born March 20, 1950, in Estill County and was the son of the late Earl and Nellie Rogers Abney. He was a retired Square D employee and attended the Cow Creek Baptist Church.
    Mr. Abney is survived by his wife, Leona Patrick Abney; one sister, Vivian Rogers of Lebanon, Kentucky; two brothers, Edward Abney of Howard Abney, both of Illinois; special nephews, Mark Brennan Patrick of Patsy, Roger Dale Abney of Berea, and Jered Patrick of Russellville; and very special great nephews, Brenden Hughes, Skyler Patrick, and Levi Patrick.
    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Zelma Abney, Wandella Wasson and Wanda Tuttle; and three brothers, Junior, Buell and Earvil Abney.
    Funeral services were conducted Friday, January 19, 2024, 11 a.m. at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Warren Rogers and Bro. Jered Patrick officiating. Burial was at the Cobb Hill Cemetery. Visitation was held on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m.

    Carl Derek Kinser, age 73, of Clay City, Kentucky, passed away Sunday, January 14, 2024 at his home.
    He was born January 13, 1951 in Winchester, Kentucky, to the late Carl Duwain Kinser and the late Norma McCoy Kinser Denny. He was the retired co-owner and operator of Kinser & Son Logging in Clay City, as well as retired as an explosives operator for Bluegrass Army Depot.
    Mr. Kinser is survived by one son, Carl Daylan Kinser; a sister, Becky Skidmore (Stephen), and a special brother-in-law, Gary Abner.
    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mary "Sissy" Abner.
    Visitation will be held at Wells Funeral Home, 777 West College Avenue, Stanton, on Wednesday, January 24, 2024, beginning at 10 a.m. for family and 11 a.m. for friends. The funeral will be held following at 1 p.m. on Wednesday. Burial will be at Stonegate Cemetery with Hunter Read, Aaron Ledford, Jay Ledford, Bobby York, Stephen Skidmore, and Gary Abner serving as pallbearers.

Earnest Lee Bicknell, age 79

    Earnest Lee Bicknell, age 79 of Miamisburg, passed away Saturday, January 13, 2024 at Austin Trace Health & Rehabilitation, Washington Township, Ohio.
    He was born in Irvine, Kentucky, the son of the late Leonard and Addie Mae Bicknell.
    Earnest was a veteran of the United States Army and retired from Delco Products/General Motors after 32 years of employment.
    He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Ilena; a daughter, Lee Ann Bicknell-Clapp (Matthew); four brothers, Kenneth Bicknell (Barbara), Carl Bicknell (Loraine), Randall Bicknell (Penny), and Gary Bicknell (Renee); sisters, Eva Ramsey and Joyce Webb (Anthony); a sister-in-law, Grethel Bicknell; as well as numerous extended family members and many friends, including his softball family.
    Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his siblings, Darrell Bicknell, Venice Bicknell, and Fay Day.
    Visitation was held on Friday, January 19, 2024 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Newcomer Centerville Chapel. Funeral service began at 1 p.m. Burial followed in David's Cemetery, with military honors.
